Forget Plastic, Try Boxed Water

by David Allen on Friday, April 3rd, 2009

The bottled water market is not going to go away any time soon, therefore it will be interesting to see if producing spring water and packaging it in paper cartons makes any difference to the amount of waste that this market produces.

It is estimated that currently only fourteen per cent of plastic bottles are recycled, which is a shocking figure. This water called “Boxed Water is Better” is only available in the Michigan area at the moment, but they are donating twenty per cent of their profits to World Water Relief, which is quite appropriate.

  • Oy vey! Bottled water, whether it's packaged in plastic or corn or cardboard (which, by the way, is coated with plastic) is a huge environmental burden. I really feel that those of us who write green blogs have a responsibility to urge people to fill up reusable bottles from the tap rather than supporting an industry that extracts water from one area and ships it to another.

Beth took the words right out of my mouth. Sure, boxed water might be better than the plastic alternative. However, we should really be pushing the use of resusable water bottles which leave NO waste whatsoever. Why make half a step when you can take a whole one?

Will it really help? Instead of plastic bottle, which can be refilled we have a paper covered with plastic box which can't be refilled.

Not a good idea in my opinion, unless I am missing something.
