The cafeteria is mandated by the feds to provide a fruit for each of the kids, which the kids are forced to put on their tray, and believe me when I say that most kids will walk directly out of the line and throw their apple or orange right into the garbage before they sit down at their tables! From what I've been told, it's illegal to collect these unmarred fruits and give them to homeless shelters because the second they leave the lunch line with a customer, the fruit is "tainted" and can no longer be resold or redistributed.
