Water Conservation Starts at Home

Water Conservation

We all live in various regions of the world today and in some places, the need to conserve water is important. While most nations boast of having adequate water supply, there is also the matter of water bills to consider.

Dripping water from a leaky faucet or perhaps unaware of water pipe problems can really become a pain in the end. Remember that your water meter is running and it would be best to have professional plumbers check them out once you see your water bills racking up.

Here are some low-cost ways to conserve water at home:

  • Fully loaded: Dishwashers and clothes washers should be operated when full for optimum water conservation. If you must wash partial loads, adjust the water levels as appropriate.
  • The dishwasher is your friend: Even old-school dishwashers don’t use as much water per dish as hand-washing. Newer, more efficient dishwashers use only 1/6 of the water used during hand-washing, and save 230 hours of yourtime each year.
  • Scrape, don’t rinse: Pre-rinsing dishes before loading the dishwasher is unnecessary. Scrape off food and then trust that bad boy to do its job.
  • Pass on permanent press: Avoid the permanent press cycle when washing clothes, which uses an additional 5 gallons for the extra rinse.
  • Upgrade your equipment: Consider buying a water-saving front-loading clothes washer, or a top-loading one with no central agitator.

Nice post, I was just out in Vegas and they are starving for water. There are public service announcements about the problem and people really seem to care about the issue.

I found a great home water conservation device that saves water and also saves me a bunch of time! I got a Hot Water Lobster Instant Hot Water valve a few months ago and it’s awesome! It’s a recirculation system that needs no electricity or pump! I don’t waste water down the drain waiting for the water to get hot anymore in the shower. It’s quite convenient to not have to stand waiting for the kitchen water to warm up too! I think it will pay off pretty quickly. I paid only $179.95 at their website. It was super easy for me to install! I think everyone should get one if you want to save water, time, and energy! One unit was enough to work for my whole house! Here’s their site… Check it out:

Living in a house without running water or modern washing appliances… For some this might be a nightmare. Running water is an incredibly valuable resource with an almost endless list of applications and uses in and around the home. Of all the water in the world, only 3% is fresh. Less than one third of 1% of this fresh water is available for human use. The rest is frozen in glaciers or polar ice caps, or is deep within the earth, beyond our reach. To put it another way, if 100 litres represents the world’s water, about half a tablespoon of it is fresh water available for our use. That’s why we must conserve waters.. nice post..

We at Freerain have been installing rainwater harvesting systems in to mostly new-build domestic and commercial buildings for around 10 years now. Essentially, water is channelled from the roof to an underground tank (sometimes above ground), where it is filtered and pumped to toilets, washing machines and irrigation. We suggest that our domestic systems can reduce overall water consumption by 50%.
