It was not that long ago when plastic bags and shopping went hand in hand. However, due to the environmental repercussionsof  using plastic bags, more and more customers must now ask for a plastic bag when they purchase an item from the store.

In the last year, three and half billion fewer plastic bags were handed out by stores. At the same time, seven and half million reusable bags were sold. These bags come in many different styles but the most famous is the “I’m not a plastic bag” by Anya Hindmarch.

I find this interesting in light of a recent yelp talk thread: http://www.yelp.com/topic/san-francisco-do-you-use-reuseable-bags#ZWw5Bb8eNyI67BLMwgL2Gw

While I believe most stores are becoming more aware of the waste they perpetuate, in my experience, asking to NOT use a plastic bag sometimes results in a “mean” face from the cashier. All I have to say to that is, “really?”
