When you think about wind turbines, you would instantly think about the ones placed on land. But not this one. The Airborne Wind Power Systems are currently under development by NASA, focusing on two technologies at the moment.
This includes that of integrating wind turbines into kites and another through a ground-based generator tethered to the kite and comes powered by the kite’s reeling motion.
The airborne wind power system is reportedly 90% efficient and uses 10% less energy. The blades of the turbine reportedly spin faster and are farther from the hub. Additionally, the system makes use of a pattern recognition software similar to the Microsoft Kinect, to be able to determine the position of the kite.
NASA intends to use the system in the future, not just on Earth, but in Mars and other planets.
