Flammable Ice Energy Source

Flammable Ice Energy Source

Coming across this flammable ice energy source, it somehow reminds me of the issue that is included in the new TV series Dallas 2012. Oil is of course the main concern for the business side of Ewing family but Bobby Ewing’s (Patrick Duffy) son, Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) has discovered a way to extract gas from methane to serve as an alternative source for oil.

Now on whether Japan was watching the said series and got the idea is beyond my knowledge but the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has invested in exploiting methane hydrate (flammable ice).

And it looks like the investment has paid off, announcing they have succeeded in extracting it from the seabed for the first time.

Methane is seen as a potent greenhouse gas which is 20 times more damaging than CO2. Hence, while the alternative fuel discovery is something, it could also render dire consequences to the environment if the Japanese continue to tap the reserves beneath the seabed.
