We have seen the idea come out in movies and even in the early stages of the flying invention era. Helicopters taking off with the aid of pedal-powered help are indeed possible although the altitude may not be as high as how current aero vehicles are reaching.
But then again, there is no harm in trying especially nowadays when the search for the best alternative aerial mode of transportation is on. And on that note, a group of students at Middle Georgia State College are doing the necessary research and prototypes to try and come up with a human-powered helicopter.
The students have been working on it since May of 2011. They plan to enter the Sikrosky Competition which awards $250,000 for the “first successful controlled flight of a human-powered helicopter.
For the meantime, the group intends to raise funds by way of Kickstarter in order for them to be able to build the final version. To date, they have received $319, still far off from their $20,000 goal.
