UK Produce to Get Carbon Labels

by erin on Thursday, May 31st, 2007

The UK government announced a plan yesterday that will involve labeling all produce with the carbon footprint of that product. Included in the calculation will be growth, distribution, transport and disposal.

“More and more, businesses are looking for ways to reduce their impact on the environment. To help them achieve that we need a reliable, consistent way to measure these impacts that businesses recognize, trust and understand,” said environment minister, Ian Pearson. “This will be fundamental in our efforts to move Britain towards a low-carbon economy in the decades ahead.”

While the calculation may be tricky and complicated, it should be an interesting and helpful tool in educating consumers as to how large their ecological footprint actually is — and what they can do to minimize it!
