New York comes in on top
Having sustainable transport is the key to having a clean city, which is why it is so important for many cities around the world therefore the Nominees for the 2009 Sustainable Transport Award Ceremony were, Beijing, China, Istanbul, Turkey, Mexico City, Mexico, Milan, Italy and New York City, USA.
Yet despite all of the work that places like Beijing did for the Olympics it looks like the work that New York did, was enough to put them into top spot. This was for the following works done in the city:
Converting 49 acres of road space, traffic lanes, and parking spots to use as bike lanes, pedestrian areas, and public plazas
Creating 140 miles of on-street bike lanes
Increasing bike ridership by 35 percent in 2008
Planting more than 98,000 trees
Introducing car-free Sundays
Recycling 40 percent of the Department of Transport’s asphalt
