Teamwork bags uses some unusual materials for their tote and messenger bags; used sails and recycled tractor tires are used to bring these bags to life. It is the materials that give the Teamwork bags their individual touch, which makes them stand out from the rest of the bags on the market.

There are around eight to twelve different choices of colours to each style of bag, with currently only four types of bags available. However, because of the materials used, no two bags are going to be exactly the same. Prices range from $45 to $165. I just wrote about a fantastic new iPhone app called Locavore, which tracks seasonal fruits and veggies locally.

This is an exciting app because as the author himself mentions, many times people want to buy and eat local, but don’t know what is currently in season. The Locavore app takes the guess work out of the equation and presents it to you in a nice and easily understandable way. And since the info is right there in your pocket, this is great for those impromptu trips to the local grocer.

The Locavore app basically picks up your location and then displays a list of several veggies and fruits available locally right now.

Great for meal planning, picnic ideas or just general monthly grocery shopping. Stock up on the produce that is in season and plan ahead for those soon to be available.

A Different Type Of Flower Pot

A new style of flower pot is being made by Ball Horticultural Company and Summit Plastic Company has announced that they are added more sizes to their new Rice Hull NetPot. This is the plantable flower pot that degrades over time after being planted into the ground.

There are now six sizes available as well as filling trays, but eco friendly gardening is the key here. Which brings up a strange point, we like to buy locally grown produce and we assume that it is organic, that may be so. However, what about all of the tools and materials that the small holders use are they eco friendly or not. Use of these pots and trays would be one step closer to a fully eco friendly and organic farmer.

By now, most people know that plastic bags are a bad thing; they can only be used one time and have a serious impact on the environment as most of them end up in landfill sites. They are really just a waste of a resource that could be used for something more tangible.

This bag represents the “War on Plastic” it comes in a small hand grenade shaped bag, which is east to store away. When there is a need for a larger bag, the grenade is unzipped to reveal a reusable polyester shopping bag. Once finished with the bag is folded away back inside the grenade, how cool is that?

To be eco friendly does not necessarily mean that you have to be hip and young, because some people have been living the green life for some years. In fact gran Joan Pick aged sixty seven from Croydon in London, has been green for almost forty years, in those early days you can just imagine what she would have had to put up with.

For some she may have been nuisance collecting and recycling everything that she has ever had, but this is not all, for most of the time she has not used a fridge, cooker or anything that we take for granted. She lives on fruit, nuts and wheat germ.

This is how she lives:

No TV

No heating

Only raw food

Make your own clothes

Walk and run everywhere, no cars, no buses, and no aeroplanes

Tea with condensed milk

She is now an eco heroine having lived like this for some time, her life is testament to how it is possible to live the green way without all of the needs and wants of the 21^st century right in the city of London, incredible!

Big box retailer Walmart, has announced in a recent press release, that they are going to start using more local farmers for produce needs.

Walmart is a massive corp, and as such, has killed any and every local business it sits next to. However, in recent times, they have set up a number of environmentally friendly initiatives, including this most locally minded project.

The use of local farmers for produce would create a stream of revenue for small mom and pop farming operations, and boost local economies. Not to mention provide a significant savings boost for the box discount retailer, in shipping costs. And customers stand to benefit as well, with fresher locally grown produce. Fresh tomatoes anyone?

Walmart has a long way to go before it is considered a beacon or poster child of sustainability, but it is moving towards that likeness.

At eco friendly retailer Patagonia, you can voice your choice. This is a new initiative that allows you as a customer to tell Patagonia what local environmental groups to support with a $4,000 grant they are giving away.

Patagonia has the Voice Your Choice campaign in all its US based stores (except Boulder), and voting takes place in the stores. What are you voting for? Each Patagonia store has a $4,000 grant they are giving away to a local environmental group. Which local group gets the grant, is what YOU decide.

The prices are likely to in the region of $1,200 to $2,000 per week, but this residence is a fully eco design, with organic food, furniture made from wood that comes from the local Royal estate, underground tanks for rain water collection the eco list just goes on.

It isn’t enough anymore to recycle and call yourself eco friendly. It will take more than that, but keep in mind it should not turn into a competition of who is greener. The mission of becoming more socially aware and responsible should more or less align with your overall company goals and mission.

Find an architect or interior designer that specialize in green design and/ or green renovation. I’m really digging the new cookbook by the wife of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Deceptively Delicious. She recently visited The Oprah Winfrey Show and discussed her ”secret” to feeding her family the dreaded veggies.

Deviled Eggs with Carrot or Cauliflower Puree

What is her secret? Jessica Seinfeld uses purees and sneaks them into a variety of recipes. Vegetable purees, maybe not super novel, but still a neat idea, and one that kids can warm up to.

She uses the vegetable purees in main entrees, side dishes, and dessert. For her oatmeal raisin cookie she uses a zucchini and banana puree, which makes for low-fat cookies, too. For the banana bread pictured above, it’s cauliflower puree and peanut butter.

This is a simple and inexpensive idea that anyone who wants to feed their finicky kids more vegetables should try and sounds delish,too. I’m gonna try the deviled eggs with carrot puree, yum!

There are things we can do to be more forest-friendly and keep VIP trees standing. Tree Hugger has an article on tropical deforestation, and it points out 3 things to watch out for when shopping for wood-based products.

Use LESS new wood based products, such as furniture, instead focus on pieces made from reclaimed wood. Or go one better and look into wood that is FSC certified, which means the wood comes from forests that are sustainably managed.
When buying coffee, look for packages marked as having shade grown coffee beans.
Use forest friendly paper, in other words recycled paper, Staples has a ream of *100% Recycled Copy Paper for $6.99 that no new trees had to die for, and also because it doesn’t come from new trees, less water and energy also play into its creation. (100 % post consumer content)

As a rule, recycled is usually your best bet, and recycled paper is now available at most of the major office supply stores.

5th Biodiesel Plant To Open in Mississippi

In my resident state of Mississippi, the fifth and largest biodiesel plant is set to open soon. At full capacity the Scott Petroleum Biodiesel Plant will produce 20 million gallons of B100 a year, making it the largest in the Magnolia state.

This biodiesel will be a blend of soybean oil and animal fat mixed with traditional petroleum diesel.

With the growing biodiesel industry the demand for soybean crops is skyrocketed, which is creating a boon for local Mississippi farmers, who will see an increase in the price paid to them for soybeans.

Why biodiesel?

Biodiesel is cleaner fuel and made from renewable resources, not to mention a local domestic product, which means less reliance on foreign oil.

The new biodiesel will be available to both commercial and public users, here is a list of the diesel service stations from Scott Petroleum.

What type of green building material should i choose when building a NEW deck? This is a question posed by a reader of Natural Home Mag, and it is great one, so i thought i would feature it here, for all to benefit.

Wood, Plastic, or Composite?

Umbra Fisk who writes a column at eco site Grist, answers the question. The reader wants to know if when building his deck, he should choose wood, plastic, or composite? (a blend of wood and plastic) First Umbra advise to check with local shops like Home Depot and Lowe’s for FSC certified wood, which is certified sustainable wood. I’ll explain FSC at the end of the post. If the local shops don’t pan out, she then advises to look for reclaimed, salvaged, or locally milled wood. If that is not available in your area, then move on to composite and then finally plastic options. If going with plastic, choose recycled plastic versus new virgin plastic.

What is FSC Certified Wood?

The acronym FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, and this organization created a FSC label program to enable consumers to consider cabinet grade lumber that does not come from a decimated forest or threatened tree specie. The program ensures environmental responsibility.

search local shops for FSC wood
look for reclaimed, salvaged, or locally milled wood
then move on to composite and plastic options
if going with plastic or composite, choose recycled

“Go Local” is a phrase you probably hear alot these days in various newspapers, mags, blogs, and sites.

What is the deal with going local, buying local, and using local. Simple, the reasons for this buzz phrase, is because of the less your food or products has traveled the less energy used in that transport, and also in the case of food, the fresher it mostly is. For example, fruit and veggies, local and organic is the best, no pesticides or chemicals are used in organic produce and local means it is grown right there close to your residence and has not had enough time to lose vital and healthy nutrients.

Save Money with Battery Chargers and Rechargeable Batteries

I love taking snapshots and ever since i bought a digital camera, i take it with me everywhere i go, and take pictures of everything and anything. I also use to go through batteries like crazy, since digital cameras are more energy intensive than the former non-digital type.

I bought myself earlier this year the Kodak K605 Battery Charger at my local Walmart, it set me back all of $9 bucks, and it is great. It allows you to charge up to 4 batteries, and it charges either AAA or AA. It is compact and fits a regular wall outlet, it also has an LED light to let you know when it is charging and when it has finished charging your batteries.

If you haven’t bought yourself rechargeable batteries and a charger, this is a good bet. You can find this model at many local shops like Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Target, and a host of other retailers. It is cheap and will save you loads of cash, as you wont have to keep buying new batteries. This particular model the Kodak K605 also comes with four AA rechargeable batteries in the package.

According to a study conducted last October, by the National Restaurant Association, bottled water made it to #5 on the list of the Top 2007 Culinary Trends.

Does hearing this surprise you? It did me, as there has been so much talk about the non-earth friendliness of bottled water and plastic bottles. It will be interesting to see what food items makes it on the list for 2008. What did not surprise me however, was #2 and #3 on the list, locally grown produce, and organic produce. Why Pay More For Organic?

You must know your lemons

Believe it or not lemons are a great natural resource, they are natural and very useful and can be used for a lot of things from food, drinks, cleaning and some things that maybe we all would not even think about.

So how about ten things that lemons can be useful for:

1. Grow a lemon tree – the most eco-friendly thing to do with lemons is grow them so that you have your own carbon neutral supply.

2. Highlight your hair – much better for you and the environment than commercial bleaches. Mix the juice of one lemon with one teaspoon of salt and apply to your hair with a comb. Get out into the sun for a couple of hours.
Do some vegetable gardening, tend your lemon tree, go for a walk, you get the picture. Don’t do this too often; it will dry your hair out.

3. Exfoliate and clean your feet – mix up some lemon pulp and brown sugar and get rubbing. Rinse and moisturize.

4. Combat bad breath – gargle with lemon juice to get rid of bad breath.

5. Fight off a cold – mix lemon juice with honey and hot water to sooth coughs and sore throats and give you a dose of vitamin C.

6. Sooth a sting – mix the juice of half a lemon with water and bathe a sting to lessen the pain.

7. Make homemade lemonade – and avoid all the chemical/preservative laden stuff in the shops. The basic
Recipe is 1 cup lemon juice, 1 cup organic sugar, 1 cup water. That will give you a syrup to dilute, as you like. Add ice.

8. Freshen up your dishwasher – use half a lemon and jam it onto an upright in your dishwasher. Smells fresh, helps cut grease and has got to be more eco-friendly that those plastic lemon shaped things you can buy to do the same job.

9. Remove lime scale from draining boards and taps – use half a lemon to rub over stainless steel draining boards and taps. Leave a minute, rinse and shine with a dry cloth.

10. Clean a bar – it’s a bartender’s favorite, just lemon and salt, rinse and shine.

Tesco to start price war and green is first victim

A price war has broken out in the UK today, with Tesco being the major player. This comes as the biggest supermarket chain starts a major new television campaign with an estimated cost of around £4 ($8) million.

The camping will show how Tesco have implemented a “Price Check” system where 10,000 products are compared with in price with the other large supermarket chains. This has come about because of the claims made by other stores that they are cheaper.

The management of Tesco admit that they have been looking at other matters such Green issues and quality control, so does this mean that Tesco will be concentrating on price and only price, leaving green and quality matters up to the other brands?

Consumers are different when dealing with different products and services. Green and Eco Friendly matters are a top priority when buying certain things, but when it comes to grocery shopping, that all goes out of the window and it is price that matters. Or does it?
