Here is something that should be useful for bathrooms in our homes. The toilet is known to be one of the causes for wasted water and the one which escalates our water bill. This could be due to leaks or some defect. But now, all you have to do is attach this device called the H2Orb from AquaOne Technologies.

Simply attach it directly to the water valve behind the toilet and when it spots a leak, it shuts off the water and alerts the user of the leak with an alarm and icon via the featured LCD screen. The whole system operates on a single 3V lithium coin cell battery.

Hewlett Packard just announced the debut of a new eco friendly printer to their roster.

The p2055d is an Energy Star-qualified printer that has built-in paper and energy conservation features.

HP specifically mentioned that the models come with instant-on technology, which can provide users with energy savings of up to 50 percent when compared against machines that still employ traditional fusing technology

And in addition to the paper conservation functions mentioned above, there is also a feature on the HP p2055d called n-up printing which allows for the printing of multiples pages on a single paper. Pretty neat.

This GREEN printer is aimed at small businesses and home based entrepreneurs.

We told you about Guffly a few months back and how they have a new eco friendly product listed daily on their website. It’s like Woot!, but green.

Well they have recently announced that they’re adding a TOP GUFFS section, as demand for their items has increased and they want to satisfy customers looking for more than just the daily offerings.

The Top Guffs currently include customer favorites like the Buckle Up Tote made from reclaimed seatbelt scraps into a functional and stylish purse, Lego My Recycled Cuff Links made from the favorite childhood toy, and a Recycled Circuit Board Business Card Case that is made from discarded circuit boards. Yes, you read that right. An enterprising company from the Netherlands has managed to come out with a paper USB drive. And recycled paper at that.

The Boardy Paper USB drive is similar in properties to conventional USB drives, but Boardy’s in essence does away with the casing completely. Only paper is used.

Quite unusual, but it works. Well it works in the manufacturing sense.

The Boardy site is pretty bare and not much other info is available, such as price, size, and memory.

Feltwerker says she is drawn to recycled wool sweaters because:

Working with recycled sweaters is very inspiring, the colors are so vibrant the texture so nubby and of course repurposed. My goal is to produce functional objects that bring out a soulful response to ooh and ahh and caress. A frequent comment to my flower pins is ‘they look like candy!’

Resale shops are my favorite place to shop and where I find fabulous sweaters for felting.

Southwest claims it takes environmental stewardship very seriously and today announced the introduction of a test GREEN plane to its fleet.

This eco friendly plane is a 737-700 model and will feature a series of sustainable features including:

reduced weight through various materials improvement
introduction of two new alternative leather products, such as e-leather and IZIT leather, two synthetics which prove to be durable but are both a mixture of man made technology with discarded leather scraps
recycled carpeting in the cabin
canvas life vest pouches, instead of metal
a lighter foam in the back of airline seats which reduces weight
and an overhaul and improvement of the Southwest onboard recycling program

Environmental Stewardship is a responsibility Southwest takes seriously, and efficient operations are the hallmark of our Company and the foundation of our environmental commitment. Over the decades, Southwest has been at the
forefront of such efficiencies as paperless tickets, quick turnarounds, installation of winglets, and, more recently; the installation of fleet-wide advanced avionics. This focus on efficiency not only makes good business sense, it is the right thing to do.

It seems Southwest is dead set on being the sustainable airline leader with its eco friendly and forward thinking.

ABC Fine Wine Takes Cork Recycling To New Heights

In Tampa Florida a fine wine store is designing one of the largest cork recycling initiatives in the state. Why cork? Cork is a natural product that can be recycled into many things, such as floor and wall tiles, car engine gaskets, and even fishing rod handles.

Companies such as TerraCycle and Yemm & Hart seek out recycled cork to create these products and then sell the products to large retailers like Target, and other office supply stores or direct online via their website.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits has set up drop off boxes in each of their 1,500 locations across the state of Florida so that anyone can come in and drop off their wine corks. And many have done just that, but in large quantities. As mentioned on their cork recycling page, a guest delivered approximately 1,400 corks to their Winter Park store on September 22nd, 2009. That’s a whole lotta corks.

In addition to keeping the corks out of landfils, ABC donates .02 per cork to several charities they work with. A rep from ABC mentioned that it may not seem like alot, “but if ABC stores collect just ten corks each day in each store, that’s more than $10,000 a year in donations”.

So with the help of consumers who bring back their used corks, to Terra Cycle who processes the corks and turns them into upcycled beautiful things, ABC is hoping to make a BIG difference in Florida…and beyond.

Are you wanting to create a local shoe recycling event in your town and need inspiration? Look to the Moms and Tots initiative in Morristown, New Jersey.

Amanda Powers a member of the group and a mom decided to create a local shoe recycling event in her hometown to entice other moms to bring out and donate old gymshoes. Where do the gymshoes go? They go to the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program and there they get turned into awesome playgrounds and basketball courts. Through the event everyone (not just moms) are encouraged to bring in a pair (or two) of shoes that either no longer fit or simply have seen better days.

Once Nike receives the donations, their process is pretty cool. They ship to one of their two processing locations, one in Oregon and one in Belgium, where the shoes are sorted and processed into three types of raw material: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric fibers from the upper. That stuff then goes on to be integrated into courts, fields, and playgrounds.

The Moms and Tots group set up the recycling drive as an event and has proven to be a great idea in Morristown. So it might work well in your neck of the woods as well.

On Broadway in New York City several amazing sculptures made from recycled steel will make their stunning debut.

Artist Carol Eisner is the visionary behind the sculptures, she’s been creating and designing them for many years. One interesting feature of the exhibit is that each ginormous art piece has a call in number wherein those admiring the art can call in and hear a detailed description of the pieces and if they wish, leave a comment.

The nine recycled steel sculptures which are beautifully twisted and curved are scattered around Broadway and are sure to create an impression in the open air art world.

In a continuing line of eco friendly phones from Samsung, we now have the new Samsung Blue Earth.

This tablet style touchscreen phone is the latest GREEN model from Samsung, and it features a screen made from recycled water bottles, a neat solar panel on the back which Samsung claims can get about 15 minutes of talk time after an hour in the sun, and cool extra features as well besides the eco stuff, such as GPS capability and an impressive 3mp camera.

The Samsung Blue Earth is not available in the US, but might very well be if other similar GREEN Samsung devices sell well. Currently the Samsumg Reclaim is their only US marketed eco friendly phone, which we wrote about a few weeks ago.

A flat sheet of recycled material is what these seats are made of. Folded and then hand assembled to form the chair like seat, the small chair is sturdy, UV and water resistant.

The UV and water-resistant stackable stool is the product of Australia-based DesignByThem. Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis, the creative minds behind DesignByThem, collaborated on the design and plan to add a table and shelving to the eco-friendly product line.

New report from MSNBC discusses how university scientists in Ohio have devised new technology which takes urine and turns it into cheap hydrogen fuel cells.

Yes! urine. Everything from cars, homes to electronic devices can be powered up using this new alternative source of energy. And in as early as six months.

Some examples of how urine power (a/k/a pee power) could be used:

“A fuel cell, urine-powered vehicle could theoretically travel 90 miles per gallon”.

“The waste products from say a chicken farm could be used to produce the energy needed to run the farm,” said John Stickney, a chemist and professor at the University of Georgia.

“Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel.”

This is too cool for school, even for Alternative Consumer. They have found a retailer in the UK that makes these super awesome drinking glasses out of recycled beer bottles.

The bottles are heated, melted, cooled and formed into a full drinking glass, each one in fact holds an entire bottle’s worth of beer. The Corona style comes with a black matching rim and is flared to accommodate a lemon or lime.

If I could figure out how to make these, I would. Or if I had the proper tools. Local restaurants in town go through barrels full of beer bottles each week, and it would be super duper neat to turn that WASTE into these awesome looking glasses.

Gorgeous Green Home In South Carolina May Get Gold Status LEED Certification

A couple has turned their ordinary Cobblestone Park, South Carolina home into an extraordinary green space, coupled with possible gold status LEED certification.

No stone was left unturned in the remodel and redesign of the Switzer home. The biggest challenge Mike and Maggie say they had in the idea for their eco friendly home was finding the right architect and builder.

But they ended up hiring an architect they had worked with before and off it went. Everything from the usual solar panels on the roof to bamboo floors was added to the home, but also much more.

See below some of other cool sustainable features they implemented throughout the home:

solar water heating system
carpet made from recycled plastic bottles
irrigation run off water system to collect rain water
drought-resistant plants instead of grass
natural light is strategically used throughout the home
insulation in crawl space keeps bamboo floors cool
energy-efficient appliances in kitchen
reclaimed wood used for outdoor club house
pavers on roof made from recycled tires
recycled rubber mulch
low-flow showerheads in bathroom
outdoor solar lights
reclaimed brick was used for the patio
countertops in kitchen made from recycled glass
and more

They say the home at $590,000 and 4,000 square feet did not end up costing much more than a non-green home in the same area. Plus they’ll save annually on electricity and other utility bills. Well done!

In Penny’s own words:

“I’ve been reading about the impact humanity is having on the earth for a long time, and I’m disappointed that more hasn’t been done to stop pollution, climate change and species extinction,” said Nash. “Finally I decided to get involved, and that’s when I launched my website,” she added.

Her website focuses mostly on sustainable apparel such as hemp and bamboo for adults, and has plans to introduce the same for infants and teens down the line.

I’ve seen the website and apparel pricing is moderate, however the site itself is truly lacking. It needs a serious design makeover and maybe easier navigation. So a new webmaster or designer is definitely in order.

Farmers Market Comes To The White House

President Obama has been granted a wish. To “have a little farmers market near the White House”.

An outdoor farmers market will be held every Thursday from September 17th till October 29 and will carry veggies, fruits, meat, eggs, cheese and baked goods. The White House market will be organized by non-profit group Fresh Farm Markets and will be open to the public. President Obama says this is not only a great way for residents to have access to good local food, but also become a huge source of revenue for local farmers.

If I lived anywhere near DC, I would totally patronize the White House farmer’s market. Kudos to the Obama’s for encouraging healthy eating.

One such company is WearPact, an organic underwear retailer with administrative offices in California. This company is aiming for 100% sustainability and you can clearly see this on their website’s ingredient page. Through this page they detail every step of their production process, from creation to packaging, from shipping and everything else. All there in plain view. It’s amazing the effort put forth by WearPact in being as earth-friendly as possible. They also donate a good percentage of their profits to several causes, including an ocean conservation charity.

Oh! and the underwear is not bad either. They have super cute prints for both men and women and each undie is made using 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane for durability and proper fit.

Purple Wastewater Hydrants Coming To South Jersey

Get ready! The purple fire hydrants are coming. In the city of Cape May in South Jersey plans are underway to recycle wastewater and to distinguish this water source from public hydrants, purple hydrants will be used.

It’s no joke. They are outlets for the county MUA water reuse project, part of a $2.5-million project, funded in part by the state Department of Environmental Protection to recycle highly-purified wastewater that will be diverted from ocean dispersion, and used for irrigation purposes, at the County Park Zoo to wash animal cages, and at Middle Township Davies Recreation Complex athletic fields.

Railroad workers in Columbia, Missouri recently repaired a railroad crossing with recycled panels.

The recycled railroad panels were sourced from an old crossing which were still in good condition. This was as much a financial decision as it was an earth friendly one, since the city ended up saving roughly $5,000 by reusing versus buying entirely new railroad crossing panels.

They ended up with a fixed crossing, a whopping $5,000 savings and karma from Mother Earth. All in a days worth in the city of Columbia Missouri.

28 Foot Whale Found Dead In London River

A massive 28 foot juvenile humpback whale has been found dead in a river town off of London in what appears to be a starvation case.

Medical examiners and local scientists are studying the two year old junior whale to further understand what happened to the lovely sea creature and why.

Deaville said the whale may have been confused by the topography of the Thames and ambient noise, or because it was sick or because climate change caused shift of the routes – vast migrations.

London is calling this a sad event but one that should yield bountiful information and better understanding of UK water-based animals to preserve their future conservation.

Let’s hope they learn a lot and prevent this in the future.

3. Go homemade – Did you know pumpkin is great for the skin? As is a variety of fruits. Google natural skin care remedies and you’ll be greeted with many ideas and tips on how to use everyday food for the skin.

4. Go all natural - The old saying goes, “if you can’t pronounce it, it isn’t natural”. So for example, look at the label of your eyeshadow. Are there all sorts of un-pronounceables? If so, it’s time to ditch. Instead look for ingredients you know, it should read like some sort of food item. The more ingredients you can pronounce, the better.

5. Go cruelty-free – Perhaps one of the best ways to green your makeup is to consider makeup products that have not been tested on animals or carry any animal ingredient. Walmart – on Applegate Street accepts old cell phones (any brand, any age, any model)
Radio Shack – in Grenada accepts old mobile phones (any brand, any age, any model)
Unicell – in Grenada
Cellular South – in Greenwood

All the places mentioned above will accept your old cell phone and responsibly recycle it for you. Feel free to call ahead for hours of operation and to ask where the drop-off box is located within the store.

You can even do a neighborly round up and instead of just dropping one cell phone off, gather a few to drop off.

So get on down to your local Walmart if it’s the closest merchant to you from the list above and simply drop off your old cell phone, they will take care of the rest. Variety is the spice of life they say and many ladies who live the green lifestyle have their share of sustainable bags, but if you’re collection is in need of a personality boost. You have to take a look at this lovely salad print eco totebag from ThreadBeaur.

This salad print used to be a tablecloth, now it makes a great bag. The inside of the bag is lined with a red fabric. This bag could be your perfect match for a quick trip to the grocery store, market or library. It is washable, so don’t worry about putting your fruits and veggies in this bag.

Stitched by hand and made using reclaimed fabric, this bag is a nice discovery. Essentially I found it on Etsy after perusing my favorite sellers listings. I had saved a few items from ThreadBeaur (one of my fave sellers) a few months ago and found this lovely bag just added to the marketplace this past August.
