Well, it came to me as a surprise that WhiteHouse.Gov changed at 12PM today, but what is most interesting is the content on the website, particularly the Energy and Environment section. (White House now officially has a blog too!)

We won’t be biased here but Obama seems to have some good plans for greening America and our planet, his new website is the proof:

Will The White House Be Going Green?

It seems that there could be some eco friendly changes going on in the White House at the end of January when the Obama family move in. Because the President elect has some green plans that he wants to go over with the buildings chief usher.

There are a couple topics that Barrak Obama is interested in, but the main change will be in energy efficiency. Anyone walking past the White House next year may be surprised to see the lights off more than before and inside energy waste will be kept to a minimum.

It is great to have politicians who bring a bit of glamour and style to election campaign and of course, Sarah Palin is the one that we are all looking at. Like this image below, she appears to be carrying a reusable cotton tote.

Nevertheless, if you look closely yes, it is a reusable cotton tote, but the message says “Real Women Hunt Moose” which of course if that is her idea of fun then it up to her. However, has she fallen into a trap of mixed messages or does she really like hunting and eco friendly bags.

Eco Hypocrisy at the G8 Summit

There has been much talk about what has been coming out of the G8 summit in Japan many of the leaders have been talking about how we need to save energy, food and cut back on just about everything else. Well this is fine we all need to think about our actions, but until everyone thinks about this then is there any point?

Take the G8 leaders themselves, it has been estimated that the carbon footprint for this years G8 summit is around eight thousand tons of Co2, this is over three times what was created in last years G8 summit in Germany!

We were also told to watch the amount of food that we buy and go on to waste, in the UK it has been estimated that the average family throws away around £6 ($12) worth of food every week. Yet, shortly after telling us this, the G8 leaders sat down to an eighteen course meal.

British Prime Minister wants all cars to be electric by 2020

There is no doubt that an electrically powered car will be good for the planet, Gordon Browns suggestion that he would like to see all cars in the UK should be all electric or hybrid vehicles that produce under 100 grams of Co2 per Km.

But there is a problem with this, government ministers have access to a Toyota Prius, but for most people these cars are just too expensive and if somehow everyone managed to get their hands on a Toyota Prius then the National Grid would not be able to cope with the power requirements.

It’s a good idea, but more thought is needed to make this happen.

Both these occurrences, global warming and the continuing oil price surge have been economic catastrophes that most people have to deal with. It has been getting harder to live in this world today and apparently each effort seems to be getting futile by the day. With these things in mind, where does the government fit in?

There are two ways to look at it. One is to see how government can benefit from it. Additional taxes and of course connecting them with global warming for a justifiable declaration. No one would bother to check in depth although the economists would do their own pencil pushing.

The other is of course the hands-off policy to which the government will wait for everything to settle and then make its move. Either way, the government will benefit while also taking credit from it once the worst is over for these two dilemmas besetting us today.

Our government is jumping aboard the global warming bandwagon in a big way. Ignoring any facts to the contrary, they continue to fuel a juggernaut that will result in more government, more taxes, more ‘crises’ and more useful idiots. Even Republicans are on board, with John McCain turning green with a twist guaranteed to garner liberal votes. He’s proposed a ‘cap and trade’ system (called redistribution of wealth) to help battle climate change. It used to be only liberals who had the hubris to think man can control climate.

$12 – $15 Per Gallon Of Gas Possible Says CNBC

I just read the scariest post evah, lawyer guy Al Nye writes in his blog, that a chief energy advisor mentions that the gas prices we are seeing today of $4- $5 per gallon of gas, are in the near future gonna be known as “the good ole days”.

$12 to $15 per gallon of gas. Those are insane numbers, and all heck is going to break loose, if gallon prices went up that high. I shudder to think what will happen to the world as we know it. I hate to get all dramatic, but just think about it for a moment. It would cost most Americans like $200 bucks a week to fill up. That is simply not possible for many. I envision mass transit also being affected, as those who cant afford gas, would have to take buses and trains to get to and from work, etc.

Bike sales would go up, which is a positive. (for biker sellers) Hey, entreprenuer types, there is a fledging business idea for you. Start a bike business. Not the electric bike kind, just the regular old-fashioned human powered type bicycles.

Barack Obama has been headlining the news today and a lot of it is connected with the upcoming elections and of course the celebrated attacks coming from his adversaries such as Hilary Clinton. This early, he is becoming a favorite and it would be good to note that among his concerns include the issue of treating global warming as a real threat rather than a made up fiction for the world to take note.

Indeed, for some people, it would seem that anyone can use global warming as a good platform when campaigning. But Obama stressed that global warming is a dire threat and among the things he aims to answer if and when he gets elected as the next president of the United States.

Global warming: Obama’s America considers global warming a dire threat to our planet. As with Al Gore of the Oscar-winning film “An Inconvenient Truth,” they consider drastic action necessary to avoid catastrophe.

The other America agrees with General Motors’ vice-chairman Bob Lutz, who recently called global warming a “total crock of s—-.” They support an analysis in the documentary “The Great Global Warming Swindle,” which aired in England on the UK’s private channel 4. This America questions the extent to which man-made activity causes increased temperatures. They question whether the Kyoto Protocol — mandating large expenses on industry to control greenhouse gases — actually harms more than helps. Other climatologists/skeptics argue that many factors account for the slight rise in world temperature over the last hundred years, including, but not limited to, solar activity.

Financing the Global Warming Debt

Global warming can be considered interest for the past deposits in the form of abuse and disregard that people have given the environment. Global warming can be cured but it will not come from natural means or self-healing prowess. It needs finances but the question is where will be the funds come from?

Apparently this will be the topic for discussion when most of the world powers will be holding a weekend meeting outside Tokyo to discuss the global warming epidemic. While it is more than charity overall, it really caters more towards helping resolve the global warming issue that continues to become a growing pain for all of us.

“We want to see that this is not a matter of charity,” he said, adding that pollution caused by wealthy nations has caused the crisis that poorer nations now have to grapple with.

The conference starting Saturday is part of a dialogue launched at the2005 summit of the Group of Eight industrialized countries in Gleneagles, Scotland. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was scheduled to address the group at the opening session.

The meeting was part of the flurry of dialogues and conferences in recent months centring on efforts to stem the rise in world temperatures before it triggers devastating environmental damage

Financing the Global Warming Debt

Who is Going to be the Political Savior of Global Warming?

While most people are guessing (or are they?) who the next president will be, it all boils down to Obama and Clinton. But while these two are the leading candidates for the eventual presidential situation, many are awaiting who among them would be the first to address the entire global warming situation that the United States is facing along with the whole world.

Apparently, most of the world today has global warming issues to cater to. And while most people find it difficult to address, little contributions and bills passed here and there have tried to go in that direction. But as a whole, the US still has to decide which issue they will finally pass to really give a steady path towards fighting off the global warming issue that we are currently being threatened with. Obama or Clinton?

If we ignore global warming much longer, we’ll face a world of perpetual disaster, so there’s no larger question for presidential candidates than who is more likely to tackle it successfully. Although Obama’s and Clinton’s positions are similar, he seems far more likely to. The key difference is their ability to mobilize a grassroots base to demand that the necessary changes get passed.

2 Billion Dollars for Climate Change from Bush

Is $2 billion dollars enough to help support the world in combating the issue of climate change as far as the United States is concerned? Highly unlikely. While the amount is indeed a generous one, the world needs more than money to make a drastic turnaround from the impending disasters we find ourselves in.

Money is a good option to combat global warming but it is not the only recourse. President Bush has finally realized its threat and while the aid seems to be a good one, it just goes to show that the delays have made the issue grow from bad to worse. More has to be done and we are not only talking about money here.

“Still, $2 billion is a very small amount of money given the scale of the problem. China alone is investing over $100 billion a year through its state-owned enterprises in new energy projects and resources, mostly in oil and coal-fired electricity,” said Clapp.

This topic has been going on for some time now with regards to the whole global warming epidemic. And who would perhaps come first towards bringing the news to us with twists on the side.

People will only read news that have something interest in it. This is one reason why some people have tried to add some stuff towards attracting readers. Who can blame them? That is their job overall. They have to come up with catchy storylines to serve as attention seeking measures and with the growing issue of global warming today, news writers and columnists are sure to have a field day trying to devise ways of expanding the readers’ attention.

Global warming is something real. There are threats and things to watch out for. People are looking for information and guidelines to which they can pick up with regards to the whole issue. Consistency of course is something needed. Hopefully, the people bringing us the information do not forget the most important thing people are looking for.

Business Recycling to become Mandatory in Atlanta

Don’t look now but it seems that we may see businesses needing to put up a section in charge of recycling their stuff! Atlanta has been considering this alternative towards helping control the waste problem that has considerably gone out of bounds.

While recycling has been an alternative, it still remains that perhaps taking away one process of the whole mess can be a good spread towards creating awareness and making businesses more sensitive on the waste they generate.

Atlanta could become the first major U.S. city to require businesses to recycle.

Legislation that will be considered Nov. 5 by the Atlanta City Council would create a 16-member task force that would spend nine months studying a mandatory recycling program for businesses operating in the city.

All that this much publicized awarding of the Nobel Prize to Al Gore has gotten is commendation for a person that has alarmed the world on the impending disaster which any single person can do if they really care for the environment. But seriously. Gore has been awarded the prize but what has it given the world? Just something to think about?

Perhaps if the prize was given for someone who had indeed done something already then maybe critics will not have something to say. Global warming is still an issue and while the warnings have been sent, nothing concrete has come about.

Sorry to ruin the party, but commendations and citations don’t stop the bleeding. Once solutions and results have been made, then perhaps that is the time to celebrate and lay claim to distinction.

The whole ruckus caused about by the global warming issues has been so far concentrating on the effects that continuous disregard for the environmental safety of our planet and not really on the inhabitants and creatures that may be eventually wiped out if the whole thing is not given proper attention.

Wildlife and plants are among the natural resources that will be hit hard. To help address this issue, getting serious and identifying them as one of the in peril resources is the main focus of this bill that is being cooked up.

“As the waters of Narragansett Bay grow warmer, cold-water fish species with high commercial value, like winter flounder, have been replaced by warmer-water species, like scup, whose value to our fishermen is lower,” Whitehouse said. “Melting sea ice in Greenland is pushing polar bears closer to inhabited villages in search of food.”

“As we work to mitigate the causes of global warming, we must also take urgent action to address its effects on wildlife, oceans, and other natural systems on which we all depend,” he said.

Now that is something that needs some DEFINITE explanation and unless he can map out one soon, he is in for more rocky roads ahead.

Thus was the ruling and ultimatum given to the befuddled US president and unless he can show some documents and surely next, plans for the global warming problem, he is just adding more miseries to his already depleted ego.

Oil Crisis May Lead to World War

The world is beset by an obvious world oil crisis contributed by a lot of factors. One is that the usual area where oil has been produced has been almost used up and the other involves that of being trapped inside a circle of war between two countries. Of course, these are Iran and the United States and if things are not ironed out soon, more than just an oil crisis is expected to suffice.

It is no secret that Iran has had some nuclear activities within its territories to try and get the upper hands for security risks surrounding its country. While this is being negotiated, the fact is that anything is possible when a country is found to be armed with potential nuclear weapons. Man will be a victim and most will be civilians.

So if you are worried about oil, this is just the cover of the whole area. There are far more scary possibilities and people will not be comfortable with the reality of nuclear holocaust over the horizon.

Oil Crisis May Lead to World War

Bottled Water City Tax Proposed by Chicago Alderman

An Alderman in Chicago wants to propose a city tax on bottled water, 5 cents on a pint bottle and 20 cents on the gallon jugs. Recent studies show that “most bottled water originates at public water supplies” and Alderman George Cardenas from Chicago’s 12th ward, states that “big corporations are using this commodity, this precious resource, bottling it and selling it back to us, perhaps at 50 percent profit.”

The mayor of Chicago, Mayor Daley, supports the proposed city tax for both financial reasons and for environmental reasons. He states their is too much plastic in our lives.

Will a city tax deter bottled water drinkers from consuming and purchasing Evian, Aquafina, or any of the dozen or more branded water bottles?

Do you buy green eggs?

Of course I should have put “eco friendly” but that was nowhere near as catchy as the green eggs. How can an egg be eco friendly?

Well there as we know different types of egg, which has to do with how the egg is produced, Free Range being the best, both morally and quality, but it is not really the egg itself that we should be looking at, its what the eggs come in.

While in a super store there is a huge range of eggs on sale, and it is the packaging that makes an egg green, we should be looking at recycled egg boxes, which can be recycled again, instead of the foam and plastic egg boxes.

That is what makes an egg green!

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says Mother Nature is A Political

Canada’s Green Part Deputy Quits

David Chernushenko, the former deputy leader of Canada’s Green Party, stepped down from his post today. Citing “business and environmental interests”, but speculation is ripe that Chernushenko disagrees with party leader Elizabeth May’s practices and internal policies.

“I would certainly encourage here, for her own health, to try to share the load more,” Chernushenko said Monday.

“At this point, quite bluntly, this is me looking out for myself and what I want to do with my life right now,” he said. “There was a leadership race, Elizabeth May won, I didn’t. She’s leader right now, and there are so many other ways that I can be promoting the same vision I share with the Green party and many other small-g greens whether they happen to be in the Green party or not.”

May feels that the Green Party team is very strong and they will be able to withstand this blow, as well as her ailing health. May is scheduled for a hip replacement soon.

Canada’s Green Part Deputy Quits

Vatican to go Carbon Neutral

The Vatican is making plans to be the world’s first carbon-neutral sovereign state. It is planning to offset its emissions through a tree-planting program in Hungary.

Planktos-Klimafa, a San Franscisco-based company, will plant the trees over a 7000-hectare lot.

Jose Sanchez de Toca y Alameda Pontificalo Council of Culture under-secretary, said that the Vatican “wanted to do its bit to fight pollution on earth and to contribute to improving the planet that God gave to humans so that they could be the servants of nature and not its masters”, even though the Vatican’s emissions were already very low.

Aussie Eco-Resort Proposal is Rejected

The Tasman Council has dismissed an application to build a $12 million eco-tourism lodge at Crescent Bay in the state’s south-east.

The luxury tourist retreat was planned by James Baillie, the son-in-law of conservationist and entrepreneur Dick Smith.

The Tasman Mayor, Roger Self says the council dismissed the application four votes to three, with two councillors abstaining.

No reason was given as to why the proposal was reject. Was it too pricey? Or not green enough?

Aussie Eco-Resort Proposal is Rejected

EU Gives Millions for Biofuel Research

The European Union is planning on giving some of its $220 million international aid to countries that will invest in biofuel crop production and biofuel research. It’s part of their greater plan to reach their goal of increasing the types and amount of alternative energy being used in the EU, so that they can meet their carbon emission reduction targets.

However, this plan is not coming up all green. EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel admits that turning land from food production to biofuel crop production could reduce food production and increase food prices.

The fact he acknowledges this problem is a big step and hopefully they will do something about it before it becomes a problem spot. However, kudos to the EU for aggressively approaching their carbon emissions goals.

Irish Green Party Leader Gets Hybrid

Ireland’s Green Party leader and Minister of State for Food Trevor Sargent took one step closer to practicing what he preaches today when he picked up the keys to his brand new Toyota Prius.

He bought the car through a charity auction on EBAy. The €7,000 he paid for the car will go directly to 15 Galway charities.

“I am glad that the sale of this car is minimising the impact of CO2 emissions on the environment and is helping 15 charities picked by Cllr O Brolcháin at this year’s mayoral ball,” Mr Sargent said.

Mr. O’Brolchain, the man who sold the car, said “it’s important that the Green Party act on their beliefs and show that it is possible to make real changes to help the environment. This is one of the most environmentally friendly cars on the market. I welcome that Minister Sargent has chosen to lead the way, and I would call on other Ministers in other departments to follow his decision.”

He was extremely excited to see his auction become a smashing success.

“Canada: Price Emissions or Else” Says Report

CBC is reporting that unless Canada started to think about greenhouse gas emissions in economic terms, Canada could experience “serious economic dislocation,” an Environment Canada-sponsored report warned Wednesday.

The report, published by NRTEE, strongly urged Ottawa to start mapping out a plan for charging for emissions.

“If the government neglects to clearly communicate the [greenhouse gas] price schedule well in advance, it risks causing serious economic dislocation…because society’s capital stocks will not be well prepared,” the report warns.

“In essence, inadequate and delayed communication by the government of a [greenhouse gas] ‘price’ could lead to substantial long-term economic costs.”

“Act strongly now [and] you’re going to really not suffer economically, but if you don’t do that, the risk of the damage to the economy of not acting with some [emissions] pricing system of some sort is very real,” NRTEE spokesperson Glen Murray said today.

“You have to have enough advance warning, years of lead time so the industry can adjust and retool.”

The report suggested that Canada needs to cut their emissions by 60% by the year 2050.

Vancouver Sets Green Goals

The city of Vancouver set itself some pretty lofty green goals the other day. Vancouver hopes to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050.

The cuts will largely come out of implementing tougher and greener standards for new building developments.”The challenge we have in the City of Vancouver is that we’re not a manufacturing city, and so we have to cut it by building smarter as opposed to changing the emissions from a large factory, for instance like a pulp mill,” said Coun. Heather Deal.

“So yes, there’s a larger challenge, but we also are in a huge growth phase right now, so that gives us the opportunity to build smarter.”

Vancouver is already a leader in the sustainable cities movement, and for their goals getting bigger and their policies getting stronger should only propel more cities to do the same!

Vancouver Sets Green Goals

Nova Scotia’s Getting Greener

I’m from Nova Scotia, so when I read this, I felt the need to write about it.

The government of Nova Scotia is finally aligning with the largest environmental non-profit in the province, The Ecology Action Centre, in an effort to combat climate change.The Ecology Acton Centre is supporting the government’s greenhouse gas targets of reducing gas emissions to 10% below 1990 levels by 2020 and their plan to have at least 18.5% of the province’s energy being produced by renewable resources by 2013.

Co-operation is key to creating successful green initiatives, and this collaboration should be successful! I at lest hope it will be!

Nova Scotia’s Getting Greener

NYC Keeps Pushing Going Green

Going green has become a very big issue for New York City. From greening their municipal buildings to their cabs, I find something new in the news about New York almost every day.

This time, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is asking New Yorkers to go green in their everyday lives. He is urging them to take up greener practices, like using energy efficient light bulbs and reusable grocery bags, in an effort to make the city a greener place to live.

He is doing so by launching a city-wide campaign encouraging these greener practices.

Chron writes

The retro-looking campaign, which features a cartoon bird that looks like a slightly plump cousin of the Partridge Family insignia, will appear on television commercials, print advertisements and outdoor spaces like bus shelters and lightpoles.

The ads remind residents of ten things they can do to help the city reach Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s goal to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent before 2030.

As people change their behavior, Bloomberg said, “they’ll also shape the habits of their own children, and all the green choices we make today really will affect our city and our planet for generations to come.”

If every New York household replaced 75 percent of its standard light bulbs with the energy-saving models, the equivalent savings would be enough to power the city’s subways and light all of its stations, the city says.

Al Gore met with the world’s top ad executives in France on Friday, to urge them to combat climate change, both commercially and voluntarily.

Said Gore, “The advertising industry, one that in the past has sometimes been pointed to as crass, and exploitive and has focused on ends over means as much as the worst industry, actually has men and women who care so deeply …”He claimed that the ad execs could make a crucial difference in the fight against global warming, and that they could play a key role in creating a global solution to the global problem.

Gore Urges Ad Execs to Fight Global Warming

Canadian Government and Senate Fighting About Kyoto

The Canadian Senate recently passed a bill that forces Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his government to meet their Kyoto Protocol duties.

“Obviously this government isn’t going to implement any measures that would do severe damage to Canadian jobs or to the Canadian economy,” Harper told reporters at the close of the spring parliamentary session.”We will continue implementing our (own) national system of regulations.”

While the current government in power is Conservative, the Liberal-dominated senate passed the bill by a vote of 53-20, meaning Canada must “meet its global climate change obligations under the Kyoto Protocol.”

Passing this bill may become problematic and troublesome for the inner workings of the government — and not just because the House and the Senate don’t see eye-to-eye.

Canadian Government and Senate Fighting About Kyoto

More US. Fish Species Over-Fished

According to a new report, overfishing in 2006 depleted some American fish stocks even further.

MSNBC writes

Species of monkfish, shrimp and sharks were added to a list of fish whose populations have fallen below recommended levels, while types of skate, sole and tuna were among those being caught at rates too high to be sustainable, the “2006 Report of Status of U.S. Fisheries” said.

Forty-seven fish stocks were found to have depleted populations in 2006, compared with 43 the previous year, and 48 were being overfished last year compared with 45 in 2005, said the congressionally mandated report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

These results have lead some conservation groups to call for more action from the government to prevent overfishing from occuring again.

“Congress recently passed a law to end overfishing, but we need strong rules to implement it,” said Matt Rand of the National Environmental Trust conservation group. “The agency needs to set and enforce annual catch limits that must be upheld by the councils. We’re encouraged by the direction that the National Marine Fisheries Service is taking in their development of these rules, but if fishery managers continue to ignore the agency’s rules, we’ll never be able to end overfishing.”

Hopefully this means more aggresive action will be taken soon!

NYC to Use Solar and Biodiesel Power

The New York City government announced that it is planning to incorporate more alternative energies into its grid. Among these initiatives, mayor Michael Bloomberg said, will be to include solar power and cleaner-burning heating oil in municipal buildings.

MSNBC writes

The initiatives are part of Bloomberg’s recently announced goal to reduce the city’s carbon emissions total by 30 percent within the next 23 years. To get there, he has been championing an array of new programs, including a multiyear plan to replace the city’s taxis with hybrid vehicles and a scheme to charge drivers fees to enter the most congested parts of Manhattan.

They are also making plans to introduce new green legislation. City Councilman David Yassky said Monday he is going to introduce new legislation that would phase in using a biodiesel blend for home heating oil.

This new law would introduce a 5 percent biodiesel blend in 2009 with a goal of a 20 percent blend mandated by 2013.

NYC to Use Solar and Biodiesel Power

Ontario to Fund Eco-Friendly Auto Industry

It was announced recently that the government of the province of Ontario will be establishing a new $650-million fund for auto companies looking to invest in green technology.

Osprey Media writes

The Next Generations Jobs Fund is aimed at the auto sector. It will be available for companies interested in the development of clean vehicles, clean fuels and clean technologies in Ontario.

Other companies looking at the development of clean technologies will also be able to access the money.

It will secure the next generation of high-paying jobs for Ontarians by developing clean and green technologies,[Premier] McGuinty states in a press release.

“With the world looking for innovative ways to conserve energy and fight global warming, some place is going to secure thousands of jobs by researching and developing new solutions, and we want that place to be Ontario,” he states.

The premier’s office states the fund will be modelled after the $500-million Ontario Automotive Strategy that helped leverage more than $7 billion in new auto investments in the province over four years.

It seems like a smart move to make — especially with an election coming up on October 10th — but will it be enough?

Ontario to Fund Eco-Friendly Auto Industry

California Governor and soon-to-be former UK Prime Minister are meeting today to discuss climate change.

Arnie really wants to work with Blair on this issue and feels that Blair has a lot to bring to the table. A particular topic of discussion will be Blair’s upcoming retirement and lecture circuit, starting on June 27th.

Arnie also really wants to speak to Gordon Brown, who has proposed some radical eco-ideas in the past.

Arnie has been very aggressive in combating climate change recently. Even though Blair is now a movie star too, this seems like an unlikely — but promising — eco-pairing!

EU Demands More Eco-Technology

Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, is demanding that Europe improve upon its climate technology efforts. He wants the EU to remain a world leader in the climate technology field.

“Implementation of our climate and energy package will unleash a new wave of eco-innovation, as the most dynamic firms compete to be first on the market with the low-carbon technologies of the future,” Barroso said about the commission’s January proposal about a new climate and energy policy for the EU.

“European industries must seize this opportunity with both hands,” he said. “I really believe that in that matter the Americans are doing a lot. And if we in Europe don’t move at least as quick as they are doing, we will discover that we will lose what we can call the ‘first mover advantage’.”

Barroso believes that there will also be great economic benefits for the EU if they go ahead with this plan. Innovation, research and business are what put the EU on top, he said, and it will take even more to keep them there.

Ontario Might Get Eco-Fees for Electronics

The government of Ontario is looking at implementing a recycling fee for electronic goods. Televisions, computers and other electronic gadgets may soon see an increase in price to off-set the cost of recycling them.

While Environment Minister Laurel Broten wants the fees to be covered by the companies that produce the goods, Gemma Zecchini, a spokesperson for Waste Diversion Ontario feels certain that if this bill passes, consumers should expect to be shelling more out of their pockets.

British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Alberta already pay an electronic eco-fee.

Ontario Might Get Eco-Fees for Electronics

US House of Representatives to Go Carbon Neutral

This week, the US House of Representatives pledged to be carbon- neutral by the end of this session.

Currently, the day to day operations of the House generates 91,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually. That is equivalent to the annual emissions of 17,200 cars.

Chief Administrative Officer Dan Beard, was ordered by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to devise a new strategy to off-set the House’s carbon emissions.

In response, Beard developed a four point-plan, starting with changing all the lightbulbs to eco-friendly bulbs. Next, they will arrange for the House to obtain all its energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind. To finalize the project, whatever is not offset in House renovations will be compensated for by purchasing carbon credits or supporting conservation projects.

The Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army were recently awarded the 2007 Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award.

The army’s successful eco-projects include planned afforestation, water conservation projects, drip irrigation projects, recycling of swimming pool water, soil conservation, rain water harvesting and projects relating to renewable energy sources.

The Golden Peacock Awards were established by the World Environment Foundation to award optimism, hard-work and innovation in combating global environmental issues.

Indian Army Receives Eco-Innovation Award

G8 Environment Ministers to Meet in Sweden

A big G8 Summit meeting is planned for Monday for 20 environment ministers from around the world. They are planning to discuss issues such as Decembers’ climate change summit in Indonesia, start-up discussions for a post-Kyoto agreement (Kyoto expires in 2012) and international economic development.

While the G8 Summit itself ends today, a consensus was reached that carbon emissions need to be reduced sustainability by the year 2050.

Seems a bit far off given that projections about sea levels, extreme weather and desertification are all approaching much, much sooner, but it’s a start.

G8 Environment Ministers to Meet in Sweden

Sierra Club Seeks to Ban Ingredients in Laundry Detergent

The Sierra Club asked the federal government today to ban a toxic chemical that is found in laundry detergents. The Sierra Club believes that this chemical causes harm to male fish and their reproductive capabilities.

The Environmental News Network writes

Scientists have documented so-called intersex fish in U.S. waters in the last decade, including the southern Great Lakes, the Potomac River watershed and the Southern California coast. The reasons for the problem aren’t fully known, but researchers suspect it is rooted in wastewater and farm runoff polluted with chemicals that are estrogenic, meaning they stimulate estrogen production. NPEs [nonylphenol ethoxylates] are one of them.

NPEs are not tightly restricted in the United States and the Sierra Club believes that this lack of regulation surrounding the chemical and its use can — and should — be directly linked to these abnormalities.

More scientific research is needed before this link can be conclusive, however, Canada and Europe both have stronger and more restrictive regulations than the United States. That might be a good place to start!

Campaigning May Be Bad for the Environment

Today, June 5th, is World Environment Day! World Environment Day was started by the United Nations in an effort to educate people about various environmental issues affecting the globe. Each World Environment Day has a theme. This year’s theme is “Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?” to coincide with the International Polar Year.

“The Arctic is also increasingly becoming a new economic powerhouse for minerals, oil and gas extraction and shipping—partly as a result of the receding ice due to climate change. Both polar regions are also seeing increased interest from tourism and the fisheries industry keen to exploit their vast and abundant fish stocks.” Shafqat Kakakhel, Deputy Executive Director and Officer in Charge of UNEP, said. “These all present opportunities and threats to indigenous peoples living there and for the world as a whole which will be reflected in the WED themes next year.”

Tromso, Norway is the host city this year, where the majority of events will be happening. Check out their official website for a complete list of activities if you happen to be in Norway (or want to be!).

There are tons of activities happening in large urban centers around the world, so I strongly suggest grabbing your local paper and see what is happening in your town!
