Qatar Airways Launches Natural Gas Commercial Jet

Qatar Airways has defied the odds and perhaps flown a jet like no other airline has yet dared. This is what sums up the new development that Qatar Airways has officially flown the first commercial jet that runs on natural gas. This alternative fuel discovery was able to power an Airbus A340-600 from London Gatwick that landed in the Qatari capital, Doha.

From the look of it, this may be a good sign for the aviation sector. Unless some kinks come out, you can bet that natural gas may yet be the answer to the fuel woes of the transport industry. Then again, this is just one flight and other issues like impact on the engines and the volume of use need to be observed and recorded further.

Summer is here and depending where you live, it might be pretty hot already. In some cities (such as mine) it’s already in the 90’s daily.

But how do you stay cool and not blow a bundle on air conditioning every month? Below I present four quick tips.

1. Wear light layers and stay away from fabrics that retain heat such as polyester. Bring out the cottons. Light cotton fabrics will keep you cool and or absorb sweat away from the body.

2. Use fans instead of AC throughout the house, these use up less energy.

3. Someone in this thread suggested to place plants near windows to absorb solar radiation. Good tip!

4. My favorite would be to take a cold shower. Use the water sparingly, but this is a great way to cool down.

Bamboo U Expands to Local Stores for New Niche

For health and for making a statement, that is what Bike to Work Day will try to imply on May 14.Expect a lot of bikes spread all over the streets in two days time as residents band together to ditch the usual cars and go to work on two wheels using pedal power.

“As a participant in past Team Bike Challenges, I have found that using my bike can get me anywhere I need to go quickly, with a lot less stress,” says Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager, who also serves as a member of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), which funds a major portion of the Bay Area’s Bike to Work Day activities. “It’s also a great way to get your exercise in before the workday.”

Already, more than 300,000 bicycle trips are made every weekday by Bay Area residents. According to MTC’s most recent Bay Area Travel Survey, more of these bicycle trips are to work than for any other purpose (81,000 each day), but there are almost as many bike-to-shop trips across the region (75,000).

Alternative transportation is an important component of MTC’s newly-adopted Transportation 2035 Plan for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. The plan boosts bicycling infrastructure investment fivefold over earlier regional transportation plans (from $200 million to $1 billion).

It also increases funding to spur compact transit-oriented development, which in turn encourages more walking and biking trips, and launches a new Climate Action Program that will provide funding for safe bicycle trips to transit and school.

Basically, Naked Pizza claims to be the world’s healthiest pizza, with multi-grain crust, prebiotics and probiotics, all natural ingredients with fewer calories and more protein than regular pizza-all with a great taste.

With Mark Cuban behind the venture, the pizzeria is sure to cause additional buzz when it comes to a town near you. With their high-tech smart marketing ideas, Naked Pizza is on track to become a national name.

What About Twitter? They caused a stir because they recently erected a huge billboard with their Twitter handle on it, as opposed to more traditional marketing like mentioning their website address. See the billboard in the pic above.

Just read about the community garden grant on Twitter (from @MichaelNatkin) for US based nonprofits.

The GardenBurger sponsored community garden grant was created to encourage healthy eating and to support community gardening.

Community gardening can range from creating a small school garden to adopting an abandoned plot of land and turning it into something useful and beautiful. Neighborhood associations, schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs – as long as your activities are garden-related, you’re encouraged to apply.

The grant amount nonprofits can apply for starts at $1,000 and goes up to a max of $10,000. So a nice chunk of change can be had by applying. Just imagine the plentiful garden or neighborhood veggie oasis that your org can create with this grant money.

Your org or association has to be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit to be eligible, you must be a US citizen, 21 years or older, and the deadline to submit your application is May 15, 2009.

All Natural Egg Dyes for Easter Eggs

Easter is weeks away and one customary event is the Easter Egg Hunt; an event that most kids enjoy. But while dying eggs is bound to be among the things that parents and organizers will be busy with before Easter, here is an eco-friendly egg dye that is recommended for use.

Here is the preferred method for using natural dyes:

Place the eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add water until the eggs are covered.
Add approximately one teaspoon of vinegar.
Add the natural dye. Use more dye material for more eggs or for a more intense color.
Bring water to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
If you are pleased with the color, remove the eggs from the liquid.
If you want more intensely colored eggs, temporarily remove the eggs from the liquid. Strain the dye through a coffee filter (unless you want speckled eggs). Cover the eggs with the filtered dye and let them remain in the refrigerator overnight.
Naturally-colored eggs will not be glossy, but if you want a shiny appearance you can rub a bit of cooking oil onto the eggs once they are dry.

You can use fresh and frozen berries as ‘paints’, too. Simply crush the berries against dry boiled eggs. Try coloring on the eggs with crayons or wax pencils before boiling and dyeing them.

Over the past few years the world’s largest restaurant chain have been working on making their world much greener, they have done this by changing the appearance of most of their stores and have made a real effort as to where they by their ingredients from too.

But there is one thing that hurts McDonalds and it makes no difference where they are located either; packaging is a big problem as no matter where you go, there is most likely a discarded wrapper or bag. However, a student Andrew Millar has designed a wrapper that is biodegradable and made from grass paper. Unfortunately, he has not approached McDonalds yet, hopefully he will be doing so and the waste situation is eased slightly.

A new style of flower pot is being made by Ball Horticultural Company and Summit Plastic Company has announced that they are added more sizes to their new Rice Hull NetPot. This is the plantable flower pot that degrades over time after being planted into the ground.

There are now six sizes available as well as filling trays, but eco friendly gardening is the key here. Which brings up a strange point, we like to buy locally grown produce and we assume that it is organic, that may be so. However, what about all of the tools and materials that the small holders use are they eco friendly or not. Use of these pots and trays would be one step closer to a fully eco friendly and organic farmer.

Hemp is one of those materials that could only be described as a miracle, not only does it grow in abundance, it is one of the materials that can virtually be used for any purpose, now there are no many materials like that around.

These rugs are made from 100% organic hemp fibre; these fibres are twice as strong as cotton, mildew resistant and are really soft to touch. In fact, it would seem that hemp has all of the best qualities of cotton, jute and sisal, but with a toughness that would not normally be associated with a soft material.

There has been much said about the great cork debate. Corks are made from a natural material only manufactured for just one use; keeping the wine in the bottle. Once used, these bottle stoppers tend to be thrown away. What a waste of a natural product.

Fortunately, a Spanish based design company have come up with a great idea where used corks can be utilized for something useful. They have created a tray where used wine bottles corks are fixed, once filled the tray can be used to protect work tops in the kitchen from the heat of saucepans etc.

Recycling Wine Bottle Corks

Stool Made From Repurposed Walnut

It is great when someone manages to make something out of a material that would otherwise have been discarded like this walnut stool. The wood used would have been thrown away because it came from edges and end of larger pieces of the walnut block.

The stool or side table, has been named the Prism, it has triangular shaped legs while the top has been given a hexagonal appearance. What is more walnut is a fascinating material that has a lovely finish to it and this particular piece has been treated with a non toxic water based finish and has been given protective feet.

Eco Friendly Potatoes Created

For most people the humble potato would seem to be eco friendly, after all, it grows in the ground and if cooked from fresh there would not be any reason to think otherwise. However, apparently the potato is not an eco friendly as we first thought because of the resources it uses.

However, researchers from the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee are claiming that they have developed an eco friendly or rather environmentally sound potato that requires less water and fertiliser to grow. The potato has been called the Vales Sovereign and has been called a farming milestone by the supermarket giant Tesco.

The clothing line uses eco friendly and sustainable materials such as organic cotton, soybean fibre and of course, no collection would be complete without bamboo. The collection is dominated by black and white although there is the occasional splash of colour here and there.

This is great because it is a solar powered boat, this type of transport is particularly good at being powered by the sun, it is probably because they are light and easily controlled. However, this boat is even better than that because it has been made from recycled and natural materials too.

The boat, which has initially been called the Loon is made from recycled plastics, bamboo and natural fibres, the roof has the solar panels and can generate a 1000 w of green power. Nevertheless, another cool idea is that when the boat is docked up and the batteries are fully charged any excess power is fed back into the grid.

Building an eco town is not as easy as it may seem and it has nothing to with the work involved, plans or finding the right materials, the main obstacle is other people this is because although an eco town is a good idea, nobody wants one near where they live.

This is not a problem in China where the eco town of Huangbaiyu has been completely changed over the past couple of years. Most of the buildings have been built from hay and pressed earth bricks, which is a US technology. The building has incorporated a full southern exposure, complete insulation, rooftop solar panels, and radiant heat floors.
