Biodiesel was known to be made possible from plants but this is one system from Joules Biotechnologies that doesn’t produces the same algae-based fuel by redesigning organisms and their functionality. They require no farmland to grow corn or other feedstock. They genetically engineered organisms that use photosynthesis to directly create the molecules that form the basis of diesel.

Their SolarConverter array system suspends these organisms in a solution within a light-permeable structure that looks something like a solar panel array. When directed to sunlight, the organisms turn CO2 and the sunlight into biodiesel. Certainly a new alternative to get some fuel in this time of crisis.

We have seen a lot of cars come out, powered by alternative fuel but this car is practically being run by things you will see in a kitchen! Imagine a car that can be powered by chocolate, steered by carrots and a body made from potatoes. The car may as well be called the kitchen race car!

Such was the accomplishment of researchers over at the University of Warwick. They will be appearing on BBC’s Blue Peter show on October 13, to demo the said car. The show will be transmitted at 4.35 pm on BBC1 On Tuesday 13th October. Be sure to catch this new eco-friendly racing car right on national television.

New report from MSNBC discusses how university scientists in Ohio have devised new technology which takes urine and turns it into cheap hydrogen fuel cells.

Yes! urine. Everything from cars, homes to electronic devices can be powered up using this new alternative source of energy. And in as early as six months.

Some examples of how urine power (a/k/a pee power) could be used:

“A fuel cell, urine-powered vehicle could theoretically travel 90 miles per gallon”.

“The waste products from say a chicken farm could be used to produce the energy needed to run the farm,” said John Stickney, a chemist and professor at the University of Georgia.

“Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel.”

Interesting development from the field of environmental science. We’ll see when and how this develops. Will keep you posted as always.

The buzz this week in the electric vehicle market is the recent news that the Chevy Volt by GM will debut next year and with a very impressive 230 miles per gallon.

But is this true? Will the Chevy Volt really reach the claimed mileage of a whopping 230 miles per gallon?

Skeptics abound left and right and with good reason, as this has never officially been done. The mass market car which should debut in late 2010, around November and is expected to retail at $40,000, is a hybrid. Meaning it is powered by both a gas engine and an electric motor.

How it will reach the 230 mpg’s is not exactly clear, but one thing is for certain – the car will make a splashy debut and rasie alot of eyebrows when it finally reaches American roads next fall.

Imagine a bike serving multiple purposes. In fact if there was a term for a bike more than just a bike, then perhaps now is the time to say it. Regardless, it seems that this is the role of this foldable bike in the London Garden concept. Other than being a transportation option, it can even be a source of power for public transport.

The foldable bike can be used in three modes:

Normal Mode (standard bike)
Exercise Mode (Storing and Generating Electricity)
Scooter Mode (Makes use of the stored energy for scootering)

Under the concept, these foldable bikes are stored in tall tree-like structures that can pass for bus stops in the modern world. The bike racks themselves are meant to generate power from rainwater, sun, and even kinetically from the wind as its swooping arms sway.

And the thing about generating energy is when a person takes the electric-powered bus or taxi. They can double as seats and the stored energy is in turn used by the electric vehicle.

Lean and then let your body do the movement. If you ask me, this is a great vehicle to be healthy and generate some old style power in ages. Rather than waste power, you create power just by leaning, exercising your body and likewise getting places.

When the driver pulls the handlebar toward himself or herself, an electro-hydraulic servo lifts the gravity center by acting on the piston that connects the swing arm. When pulling on the handlebar is lessened, the vehicle stabilizes due to the lowering of the COG.

It’s a crazy idea but with people looking for alternative vehicles to use, it certainly serves the purpose to this respect. Weird but practical and logical.

Volvo Fuel Cell Technology Creates Jobs and New Energy

Volvo will reportedly go full blast with its fuel cell technology drive, which if successful, will create more jobs. Swedish Energy Agency and the Volvo Group are investing SEK 200 M in Volvo’s development of fuel cells. The investment will create around 100 new positions in the Gothenburg region within the next three years.

In the autumn of 2009, Powercell Sweden will need to hire around 60 people in an entirely new plant in the Gothenburg region. Per Wassén, who is Investment Director at Volvo Technology Transfer and chairman of Powercell Sweden AB, foresees that the company will create around 100 new jobs within the next three years.

With the growing need for alternative energy and fuel for various means but largely for vehicles, fuel cell technology can truly be a big help towards the efforts of local motorists and car companies. A fuel cell resembles a small battery. It is charged with hydrogen gas and converts this into electricity, water and carbon dioxide through a chemical reaction.

The areas of use can be power supply units for households, trucks, boats, radio masts in remote locations and electric hybrid vehicles. Compared with normal diesel or gas-powered engines, fuel cells produce significantly less carbon dioxide and no emissions at all of particulates and nitrogen oxides. In addition, they are more efficient, smaller and lighter.

Summer is here and depending where you live, it might be pretty hot already. In some cities (such as mine) it’s already in the 90’s daily.

But how do you stay cool and not blow a bundle on air conditioning every month? Below I present four quick tips.

1. Wear light layers and stay away from fabrics that retain heat such as polyester. Bring out the cottons. Light cotton fabrics will keep you cool and or absorb sweat away from the body.

2. Use fans instead of AC throughout the house, these use up less energy.

3. Someone in this thread suggested to place plants near windows to absorb solar radiation. Good tip!

4. My favorite would be to take a cold shower. Use the water sparingly, but this is a great way to cool down.

The new fuel cells back the new UK car which is said to be better than most hybrid and electric cars in the market today. It can consume only 360 miles to the gallon and could be made available to consumers for just 200 pounds Sterling ($315) per month.

Developed by Riversimple, the small city car integrates a 6kW fuel cell from Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies. The vehicle maximizes energy efficiency by utilizing lightweight composite materials, eliminating heavy mechanical component, and by networking fuel cells with ultra capacitors and 60% regenerative braking energy into one symbiotic system. The result is ground-breaking: 240 miles (390 km) can be traveled on one small tank of hydrogen weighing only 2.2 lbs (1 kilogram).

When you talk about price and alternative fuel or transportation, this supposed secret car does seem enticing. With the growing rant for other forms of potential vehicle preference, this latest top secret car certainly promises a lot. Best of all, it has a ready supply of fuel cells to back it up!

How To Find Earth Day Events Near You

The Earth Day website is a great resource for finding local Earth Day events and activities near you. You can search via keyword, by date or by location. When the list populates, you get access to a Google map and full event details, such as hours, activities planned, and the ability to register directly on the site.

NOTE: I conducted a search for an Earth Day event in my local zip code and found a few events, but what would be really cool is to be able to use both the (location and date) search feature together. This way when you do a search by location only events still active and or upcoming show up.

Keep in mind many different organizations, clubs, schools, businesses and associations are celebrating the 40th Annual Earth Day. So finding something interesting, smart, cool, family-friendly, or fun should not be too hard.

CFL bulbs use less energy than traditional bulbs and also last about 10x as long. These will pretty much last you a long while. Generally they tend to cost more, but since they last longer – the need to replace isn’t as great. So you could buy a new traditional bulb every two months or so at $2.00 a pop, or you can buy a CFL at $7 to $10 every 5 years or so.

There are a lot of simple things you can do to go green for Earth Day. Every little bit counts.

1) Stop using plastic bags at stores – use tote bags instead. Many stores including Wal-Mart are offering totes instead of plastic bags. Get a few tote bags and use them for your shopping. You can use them over and over again and that’s less plastic bags filling our trash.

2) Decrease your water usage – brush your teeth with the water off and don’t take long showers. Just shower long enough to get clean, and then get out.

3) Always use energy saving light bulbs – when you’re current bulbs go out, replace old light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. The new crop of CFL’s use less energy and last longer. Way longer.

4) Use rechargeable batteries instead of using disposable batteries. With rechargeable batteries, you just recharge and reuse the same batteries over and over again.

The port of Los Angeles is having a green moment with the installation of solar panels covering an area of seventy one and half square feet, which is possibly a world record on its own. However, this is more than just solar or world records the port authorities are setting a magnificent example that other organisations should be taking note of.

The building to be covered will be the World Cruise Centre and the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year at an estimated cost of $9 million and will generate around one MW of power. Nevertheless, this is first stage as an additional installation of 1.16 million square feet is planned that will be completed over the next years or so.

Here in the UK, pollution from vehicles, especially large vehicles, is a constant problem. The UK’s roads and buildings are crumbling under the stress of the weight and pollution. The attempts by the government and local councils to reduce pollution are simply not working because public transport is not up to the job either.

Fortunately, there are alternatives being brought out, like this new style bus from Optare. They have produced an electric vehicle that is totally green and produces zero emissions. The Solo EV could be the answer for public transport. But there are millions of buses on the UK’s roads and these buses take eight hours to charge up and then there is the cost to consider, so is this really an eco friendly alternative?

Obviously, with Earth Hour happening around the world at ironically different times, it would be a day or so before the full story would be known. Starting in the Chatham Islands located in the south Pacific Ocean the lights began to go dark this trend continued around the world to include almost four thousand cities in eighty eight countries in twenty five different time zones, was it a success? You Bet!

Solar Powered Plane Tours Europe

There is only one solar powered plane that is capable of carrying a person, it is the Sunseeker II, and it will be setting off on a European tour following the e-flight expo, which takes place on the 5^th April. This is the second version of the craft that made twenty one flights and spent a hundred and twenty one hours in the air during 1990.

The Sunseeker II is designed by Eric Raymond; it uses battery power to get into the air, while solar power takes over during the flight for the controls and other operations. The plane will be flying over the following countries: Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia.

Have you heard of The Giving Tree Band? A small but powerful Chicago bluegrass, rock, and eco-billy band that has as much passion for their music as they do for the planet.

The guys behind The Giving Tree Band are rocking out small concert stages and nationwide festivals with their unique blend of indie music and sustainability.

Their most recent music collaboration is Great Possessions, an album which was recorded in the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center in Wisconson, a LEED certified green building. This is the first album manufactured under wind power and in a LEED certified property. Pretty cool.

The guys from the band even drove their bikes 11 miles everyday to the center from their camping grounds site.Yes they camped out for a month while recording this album, as the Aldo center doesn’t have live-in quarters.

They also plan to offset the shipping of their music CD’s with a carbon offset program and even cooler than all of the above, is the fact that they use guitars and other instruments made from reclaimed wood. Some are donated by a retailer that specializes in recycled wood guitars.

The Giving Tree Band is a rock band with a dual mission, to rock out with awesome music and to do it sustainably.

Look for Great Possessions, their third album, to come out this Spring.

The heliostat system is a fringe market in the solar power industry. Instead of using expensive solar panels, this system uses computer controlled mirrors that track the sun and direct the suns light right into the windows of the building. It can produce around 600 watts of heat and provide enough power to light forty hundred watt light bulbs.

This is an energy that is in its early stages, for some people directing sun light through the windows of a home could be a nightmare; just imagine the brightness of the light all day long. Clearly, it needs some work but the general idea is cool, or hot depending on your point of view. In the future you could just imagine huge purpose built buildings surrounded by fields of mirrors providing heat and power to the surrounding area.

For many people there is only one place for maps: online. Therefore, it is essential that businesses are able to utilize this tool in order to get their message and business offerings on the map that counts. To this end, Paris, France has been working hard to establish the use of electric vehicles, but for a stranger to the area, charging up is a nightmare.

By quickly glancing at the map provided by the city, the location of the charging stations can easily be found; there is even a version that can be downloaded in PDF form making it easier for the user to find their nearest charging point. Of course, what the map does not tell you if that whether or not the charging station is being used.

Wave Power Project Cancelled

It has been a dream for a long time to harness the power of the waves to produce energy. This concept looked as if it could be introduced on a larger scale as testing was going very well for the Agucadoura Project off the coast of Portugal. The project was supposed to produce around 2.5 Mw of power for the $9 million investment.

Yet, despite the investment and the apparent success, the project has been cancelled. What would have become the world largest and most successful wave power plant has now come to an end. The original plan was to build twenty five of these generators, but the equipment has not lived up to expectations with leaks that affected buoyancy and the recession taking its toll on the finances, the project simply run out of cash.

Normally it would impossible to use the words eco and Porsche in the same sentence, but these are changing times and luckily even car manufacturers are having to change their ways to produce greener cars. This applies to the top end of the market too. The Audi 3.0 litre engine will run on gas and come with the addition of a hybrid battery pack weighing around 160 pound to provide electrical power.

Timeline to a road test:

2010 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Release Date: Sources expect a roll out in calendar 2010, with sales starting immediately or soon afterward.

2010 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid First Test Drive: Previews should be on the media docket for the first or second quarter of 2010.

2010 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Prices: One recent report projects a $44,000 base price, about the same as a 2009 V6 Cayenne. However, it will probably be more like $48,000-$50,000.

However, there could be a solution that not only disposes of the used oil; it will also provide around a quarter of the power needed to keep the restaurant going.

VegaWatt is a machine that turns used cooking oil into clean energy and eliminates the need to dispose of the used cooking oil. The machine is about the size of the fridge and uses a filter system; there are no chemicals or fossil fuels used in the process making it a cheap and clean source of energy.

Solar Cells Run Off Like Printing

Flexible solar cells are a remarkable feat of engineering; they are flexible, small and reasonably cheap method of producing renewable energy. This means that one day in the not too distant future solar cells could be printed on machines in a similar way as bank notes.

Work is already being carried out by CSIRO’s Future Manufacturing Flagship in Australia, they are investing in a three year project to find economic ways to produce solar cells on a reel to reel basis, and this is being done with the help of Securency International a banknote printing company. Once printed these solar cells can be cut or shaped to fit onto almost any surface.

1. Adjust settings – There are two important settings you can adjust to save energy on your laptop. The power setting and the screensaver setting. Go to control panel and set these to the lowest setting you can reasonably afford to go with. This will also help out with saving some battery power.

It hard to imagine McDonalds in another country operating differently to how they do anywhere else, but in some cases this just has to be done, take their branches in Sweden where some are built along the main roads but instead of linking the road, they build two branches one on each side of the road.

But what they will be offering in the future for the drivers who stop over is charging post for electrically powered vehicles, although it is not as easy as that sounds. This is because their provider Elforsk has to work out a way to make the charging process shorter otherwise the car park is likely to fill up with cars charging up and no room for anyone else. Currently there are only a few hundred electric vehicles in Sweden, but by 2020, the government would like to this figure reach 600,000.

These great looking lights look a bit like a hatching bird but only its legs have come out of the shell and somehow the chick has managed to stand. However, in reality things like that do not happen, or do they? These solar powered lamps are quite cute looking and would make a great addition to apartment living.

The lamps are the brain child of Berlin based designer, Michael Hilgers who has added a great touch by making the legs and feet orange to give them a real chick look. They come in two varieties, the solar powered version and the less technical tea light powered version.

The Most Efficient Solar Hot Water Panel In The World

An Irish firm, Surface Power has developed what they are calling the most efficient solar hot water panel ever and plans to create up to twenty new jobs over the next year in order to cope with the work needed in building the new panels.

According to an independent assessment of the product it was found that the panels is as much as 131% more efficient in the morning and evening, while at midday they are up to 76% more efficient. This product has been six years in development and once installed can reduce the hot water costs by up to 70%

However, a US based firm is also claiming similar benefits from their product, so it could turn out to be a race to get the product out there first.

This has put pressure on the industry too as lack of sales means poor revenues, this has meant that companies who produce these products are suffering, in fact the industry as whole are predicting a decline of between thirty and fifty per cent. If this continues then firms could up closing down meaning job losses and the loss of reasonably priced eco friendly power generating equipment.

Super Bowl 2009 Was Green (Well, Sort Of)

I’m not sure why there wasn’t much press on the fact that the Superbowl made an attempt to be green this year.

As the New York Times reports, this year the Superbowl initiated several eco-friendly changes to game day.

Some of the changes included:

a composting program
the use of biodegradable plates forks straws and napkins
new LED lighting displays
the recycling of cooking grease.

Surely these subtle changes and or additions don’t put the Superbowl on any “Top 10 Eco friendly Event” list, but just the fact that they are being cognizant of how HUGE this event is in terms of energy usage and resources, means they are headed in a solid direction.

And every bit helps.

Super Bowl 2009 Was Green (Well, Sort Of)

Ordinarily the building of a £24 ($40) million power station would not normally of interest, but this power plant is something completely different, although it is just in the planning stages at the moment this is a state of the art Biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant.

But instead of using wood or other materials, this plant will be using the waste products from the Rothes Distillery in Scotland, where the plant is to be located. Where it will produce 7.2 mega watts of power, this is estimated to be enough to provide electricity to nine thousand homes.
