Recycled Dog Collar

Do you love recycling things and giving them new life? Then CraftBits is for you, this site specializes in crafts of all types but they also have a section just for creating crafts out of recycled material.

Take a look at the recycled dog collar made from old shirts you already have in possession at home or get some cheap ones at your local thrift or resale shop. You make these out of the shirt collars. The cool thing about this site is that all the crafts come with a mini-tutorial on how-to create these recycled masterpieces yourself.

Great idea on how-to recycle shirts that no longer fit or are just a tad worn.

Sharks Getting Drugged

We fear them the most but perhaps we just don’t understand why sharks were placed into existence by whatever origin they game from. They are terrors of the deep but once man has his way of drugging and hunting them down, their entire clan may just be insufficient for anyone to see at some point in time.

Sharks being tagged as dangerous sea mammal should not be a reason for man to drug them. It is simply something where both must learn to co-exist. Just like most animals that are slowly becoming extinct, we may yet soon see sharks following the same plight as well.

Could the polar bear be extinct by 2050

Well this is what some scientists are predicting that over two thirds of the worlds polar bear population could be killed off leaving them in a virtually untenable position, and hardly in a position to recover. Though the count would be different in depending on where they are located.

Could the polar bear be extinct by 2050

The population of Polar bears in Alaska would be totally wiped out by then, the only place that these bear would be able to survive is Greenland and Canada.

Could the polar bear be extinct by 2050

At the moment there are around 16,000 polar bears, but this amount will decline over the years because of the sea ice that is melting away is where they catch their food.

Farm Animal Existence in Peril

Farm Animals on Extinction

Do you remember how the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were created? It was through some stored gene species in test tubes to which they were mated with another specie frogs. While this may not be totally the same with the current issue at hand, groups such as Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have proposed that the same be used to help avoid potential extinction of farm animals. Yep, you heard it right, farm animals and not the usual wild animals.

Unlike for wild animals, the case of farm animals is based more on food consumption and demand by consumers all over the world. While there are still some good supplies of the common farm animals, they may not last long if the breeding is not done properly and seriously.

An over-reliance on just a few breeds of a handful of farm animal species, such as high-milk-yielding Holstein-Friesian cows, egg-laying White Leghorn chickens, and fast-growing Large White pigs, is causing the loss of an average of one livestock breed every month according to a recently released report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The black-and-white Holstein-Friesian dairy cow, for example, is now found in 128 countries and in all regions of the world. An astonishing 90 percent of cattle in industrialized countries come from only six very tightly defined breeds.

More British veggies than Americans

The veggie way of life is taking the UK by storm, with almost twice as many Brits taking to the veggie lifestyle as there are Americans and that’s official!

According to a report by Mintel around five to six percent of the UK population are vegetarian, in the states the figure is only 2.3 per cent. It seems that being a veggie in America is not as hip as what it used to be.

veggies

The figure for animals being killed for food has fallen in line with demand in the UK, the figures show that the slaughter of animals is at an all time low, meaning that there were 20 million chickens, 2 million turkeys and 70,000 pigs not killed for food, until next year that is.

More wildlife at risk in the UK

According to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, which lists all of the problems that the country is having keeping its plants and wildlife alive, the list is getting longer as more flowers and wildlife are falling foul of the eco unfriendly things that are going on the country.

hedge hog

Amongst those newly added are the house sparrow, harvest mouse, cuckoo, garden tiger moth, grass snake and the hedgehog, which just goes to show how bad things are, however this is a preventative measure, which should see the number of these little creatures increase significantly over the next three years.

Extinction is such a terrible thing, and these days this sort of thing should not be happening in this day and age it is totally unforgivable in this day and age.

Educating Green Awareness through Farm Shows

Green Farm Animal Education

Wise investment in green education is a good way to point people in the right direction when it comes to observing the whole environmental issue. Elders and kids are hearing all about the global warming and green efforts but surely lack the educational knowledge and orientation to know what they can do to prevent them.

For this farm that showcases educational tips, some animals that are aligned towards nearing extinction are also present to help the green cause. Ranging from recycling and reducing the use of some things, perhaps through animals, people can learn something for a change.

Have you considered non-animal based clothing or footwear?

Chris over at Lighter Footstep wrote a great piece on why folks should consider animal-friendly clothing and footwear. Animal livestock operations and farming practices contribute a great deal of greenhouse gas emissions on our dear planet, more so than our automobiles.

As Chris points out it has become mainstream for manufacturers to create clothing and footwear that is not leather-based. There are many good durable, strong, healthy, clean alternatives such as canvas, jute, cork, straw, hemp, bamboo, and organic cotton.

Simple
is one mainstream footwear retailer that specializes in eco-friendly and animal-friendly shoes and sandals. They have a shoe line called GreenToes that only uses natural and non-animal based materials. If you’re thinking that their styles are not fresh or hip, think again, they have fabulous designs. Simple is one of my absolute fave earth-friendly shoe retailers. But there are many others also, i have done numerous posts here on Keetsa about the vegan shoe selections over at MooShoes,Terra Plana, and many others.

If you have never bought anything in hemp, canvas, jute, or bamboo why not consider some of these sustainable fabrics. These materials can sometimes be pricey because the demand is not yet there, but if you search around enough you will find moderately priced green items. I promise.

WWF now on Second Life

It seems that everyone wants a piece of Second Life these days, and green issues are most definitely up there with the rest of them.

The World Wife Fund (WWF) are about to set up their own island on the fantastic site, where anyone can become a virtual person and in fact live out their lives there, a bit like reality really, who is to say that we all are not living in a huge second life type world?

WWF now on Second Life

The island is going to be called Conservation Island and it is animals that run the island, and it is going to be powered by wind power too.

Naturally there is going to be a serious side to this, as the aim is show visitors how conservation issues are affecting the world and the wildlife that inhabit it.

No More Bull, eco friendly book by Howard Lyman

Howard Lyman is known for several things, one is his Mad Cowboy book in which he speaks of his days as a cattle rancher who had his own feedlot and factory farm and his personal account of feeding chemicals, pesticides, and even feeding other chemically-laced cows to cows.

Howard is also known for his highly publicized trial that included Oprah Winfrey against Texas cattle farmers. He is perhaps best known as the “the cowboy that won’t eat meat”, he went vegetarian (then vegan) many moons ago.

His latest publishing offer is a book called, “No More Bull! The Mad Cowboy Targets America’s Worst Enemy: Our Diet”. In the book he talks about what is keeping the meat industry afloat, an update on Mad Cow disease, and he discusses the plant-based diet known as vegetarianism.

Howard Lyman’s story is a compelling one and a must read for anyone interested in living a more meat-free life.
