It pays to be eco-friendly and others want to know the proper measures to be green. Though we all have our own ways of going green, Yesterday’s News wants to know which eco-friendly habits are being done. From the simple turning off of the electric switch all the way to proper garbage disposal or even recycling practices, all these count in Yesterday’s News Do-Gooder Awards Contest. The contest invites all cat owners to submit stories on how they incorporate eco-friendly habits into their daily lives.

Three winners will be selected to receive $5,000 for themselves, a year’s supply of Yesterday’s News litter for their cat, and $15,000 for their community.

Life is indeed hard and if people had their way, they would look at various opportunities to make money the easy way. One thing that many animal rights observers should take note is how Filipinos use dog meat from the ordinary street dogs called “Asong Kalye or Askal” and use them as hearty meals to keep the body warm. Add to that, they provide a profitable income especially if you sell it to people in the colder areas of the Philippines like Baguio.

But still, it remains that killing dogs for meals seems to be improper. Dogs were never aligned with the meat sector as far as proper nutrition is concerned. Health issues may crop up though many deny it.

Also, the fact remains that a dog is a pet and not similar to chickens or cows that can be slaughtered and eaten at any time. People who are doing this are gross. But while they use the financial crisis as a reason, they may see themselves in worst situations now that they have been apprehended.

At first, this article really had me thinking. How do you recycle a pet? The first thing that came into mind was the movie 6th Day where we saw pets being cloned.

Alas it was something different. Rather it was meant to point as providing homes for impounded dogs, much of them caught wandering astray. Kids want to have their own pets to nurture so if you want to get one and also provide a new home for these animals, visit a pet shelter and you can perhaps “recycle a pet” in a manner of speaking.

President Elect Obama To Adopt Shelter Puppy

As you’ve probably heard by now, President Elect Obama has decided to adopt a shelter puppy for his daugthers.

The reason this is news is because in the past no President has ever elected to adopt an animal from a shelter, usually it has been a purebred AKC dog. Essentially when you adopt a pet from a shelter you are saving that pets life. You are giving it a much needed (and deserved) second chance.

Obama has said he plans on being mindful of animal cruelty and will do whatever he can to support animal welfare programs and initiatives. We say, awesomesauce!

The puppy that Obama decides to adopt will be BIG NEWS all over the world, and as soon we find out more information on name, shelter, etc. We shall let you know.

It might be PAWS CHICAGO, a no kill animal shelter in Chicago. Not sure, but rumors are circulating.

“A green product helps the planet no matter what it is,” Bodenstein said. “If you’re going to buy a collar or a dog bed anyway, why not pick an earth-friendly one?”

Do you remember how the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were created? It was through some stored gene species in test tubes to which they were mated with another specie frogs. While this may not be totally the same with the current issue at hand, groups such as Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have proposed that the same be used to help avoid potential extinction of farm animals. Yep, you heard it right, farm animals and not the usual wild animals.

Unlike for wild animals, the case of farm animals is based more on food consumption and demand by consumers all over the world. While there are still some good supplies of the common farm animals, they may not last long if the breeding is not done properly and seriously.

An over-reliance on just a few breeds of a handful of farm animal species, such as high-milk-yielding Holstein-Friesian cows, egg-laying White Leghorn chickens, and fast-growing Large White pigs, is causing the loss of an average of one livestock breed every month according to a recently released report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The black-and-white Holstein-Friesian dairy cow, for example, is now found in 128 countries and in all regions of the world. An astonishing 90 percent of cattle in industrialized countries come from only six very tightly defined breeds.

Marine life is a critical thing to consider when animals living in the oceans and marine life are exposed to certain pollution such as oil. Oil spills usually occur when there are overlooked aspects of oil leaks from oil tankers transporting oil.

While this is a common issue we see practically all the time, one oil spill in a certain part of the waters we see today will create a lot of problems. Just look at the birds and the aquatic mammals that have died from this negligible act. Human beings may be up next if this continues.

Most of the creatures that are victims of climate change include that of polar bears who reside in the Arctic regions. Honestly, aside from not having the wisdom that man was gifted, they can only sit and exist for as long as they can. But considering the rapid diminishing problem of the polar ice caps, their existence is also now under peril.

Polar bears can not speak out and cry for help. This duty is left for the people around the world to discover and if they continue to disregard such warnings, we may see these polar bears join the long line of species in the animal kingdom that have gone extinct.

It is not only a matter of extinction as far as the animals are concerned. We, the human beings may face the same fate. We all live in the same diminishing world don’t we?

The creative people of Brazil have been coming up with some very good recycling ideas recently, the main material used appears to be the ring pull from a can of soda.

Here the ring pulls have been combined with a crocheted material and a buckle made from nickel plated tin.

The finished product looks so cool and nice, in fact if you never knew what it was made from, and then at first glance you probably would know that there were ring pulls in the collar.

The list of endangered species could go on and on. It includes birds, mammals and sea creatures. One hint we can refer to when we want to find out which among the creatures of the animal kingdom are nearing extinction is through their rare sightings to date. Obviously, it has been man that has made these rare sightings possible. Hopefully the Endangered Species Act can control this imbalance.

Livestock for producing the demanded meat from most people who have to turn to them to live properly, produces more of these unwanted carbon emissions.

The harmful emissions do not come from the machineries and plants to maintain them. Rather, it is in the waste that they produce. They are key contributors to the whole green dilemma as we can see here.
