The project was supposed to produce around 2.5 Mw of power for the $9 million investment.

 

 

Yet, despite the investment and the apparent success, the project has been cancelled. What would have become the world largest and most successful wave power plant has now come to an end. The original plan was to build twenty five of these generators, but the equipment has not lived up to expectations with leaks that affected buoyancy and the recession taking its toll on the finances, the project simply run out of cash.

However, this boat is even better than that because it has been made from recycled and natural materials too.

 

 

The boat, which has initially been called the Loon is made from recycled plastics, bamboo and natural fibres, the roof has the solar panels and can generate a 1000 w of green power. Nevertheless, another cool idea is that when the boat is docked up and the batteries are fully charged any excess power is fed back into the grid.

This vessel has two wind turbines and a solar array, which generates power for part of the propulsion system, lighting and even the navigation equipment. The vessel is capable of carrying a hundred and sixty passengers at a time, although there are plans for another vessel to join the fleet.

Designers from New York have designed these temporary floating habitats, and they plan to launch the finished article sometime during 2009. These floating islands will be built from materials from junk yards, recycled wood, metal, plastic and fabric. They will get power from solar panels and wind turbines. They can also be connected to build communities if required.

True it is a paddle boat and you have to get in there and do some work, but after while all that hard work will pay off dividends as while the pedals where being turned they not only turned the paddles they were also charging up the on board batteries.

 

 

Once the batteries are fully charged, then at the flick of a switch the boat becomes electrically powered and you are able to sail around until they run out, it is so cool!

Of course it would, and a company based in the South of France has the idea of using the sun to power their boats to great effect.

Technical Data for the 550 Solar boat with 800 W engine:

The boat is built from polyester GRP. The boat uses the 3 bowls building method with floating unsinkbar.

Length: 5.50 m

Width: 1.84 m

Depth: 0.4 m

Weight: approx. 480 kg

Engine: 800 Watts underwater engine with either 2-step circuit or electronic regulation.

Batteries: 24 V 180 ah (C20) lead acid

Battery charge: For each sun day in the spring and autumn 30 ah (24 V)

in the summer 40 – 50 ah (24)

with covered sky approx. 20 ah (24 V)

Speed: at full power: 5 knots

at half power: 4 knots

Range/travel time: During optimal sun exposure the boat can be driven at 5 knots with full power up to 6 hours. At 4 knots, 10 hours is possible.

At night the boat can be driven for 4 hours at 5 knots or 6 hours at 4 knots.

In sunshine at 2-2.5 knots the boat can be driven for an unlimited period.

This boat or yacht has been made from fifteen thousand plastic bottles, which have been fixed together by using old fishing net which has been recycled too. The yacht also uses an old cockpit from a single engined aircraft, keeps the passengers and crew dry.

But after all of that dedication, he also had time to piece it together and build something that is not only made from recycled materials, but is an eco friendly mode of transport too, not bad, I just hope that he used water proof glue, otherwise it could all end in tears.

However with plenty of sun the electric engine will glide through the water silently and at around five miles an hour, the batteries will hold a charge of around six hours, which means that there is plenty of power to get around even if the sun is a little low.
