There is a new type of building material in the market with a new kind of composition. PaperStone is a highly durable surface with a contemporary stone-like appearance made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper and a petroleum-free natural resin.

Incorporating PaperStone into building projects may contribute towards up to five LEED credits in the following areas; Recycled Content 10%, Recycled Content 20%, Certified Wood Materials, Low Emitting Materials and Innovation in Design. LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – is the Green Building Council’’s internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

MAC which is globally renowned for their commitment to the environment has elected to use the eco-friendly material to fit out two of its newest stores located in Riyadh and Dubai. Wadah Abusin, Co-founder and Managing Partner at Ecobility, said:

“PaperStone is without doubt the greenest solid surface on the market today and is a significant contributor to sustainable design when incorporated into either residential or commercial projects. As a result of the ease of workmanship and finish of the product, the installation process is straightforward and the economics are very attractive as it costs less than quality granite, yet it does not compromise on the aesthetics.”

PaperStone is the only architectural solid surface certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for using 100% post-consumer recycled paper. It is also certified by The Rainforest Alliance. Mr. Abusin added:

MAC to Deliver PaperStone Building Materials to Ecobility

This design is in response to a programme run by the Andes Spouts Society, the idea of which is to design a small portable housing unit that has been made with environmentally friendly materials and is virtually self sufficient when it comes to power, water and waste.

This idea has been designed by Nice Architects from Slovakia; the idea being that is crosses the boundaries between gypsy caravan and RV trailer. Each unit has around 270 sq ft to play with and should be able to easily provide accommodation for two people or more if they were not fussy at all. Its collects rainwater, has solar or wind power and actually in general just looks really cool and futuristic.

Therefore, by nurturing their imagination with play and nature, maybe they could carry this through in to adult life. One way of getting them to play outside is to have a playhouse and those designed by qb Playhouses are something special indeed.

They are able to create their own house on the company website, they can choose to colour and style of the building, which if you go kids drawings could turn out to be something very exciting and surprisingly eco friendly looking. Was Earth Hour a Success?

Obviously, with Earth Hour happening around the world at ironically different times, it would be a day or so before the full story would be known. In fact, as expected, Earth Hour was a success in many cases and it has been refreshing to see iconic landmarks and government buildings from around the globe taking part in the one hour switch off.

The date was the 28th March and at 8.30 pm in whatever time zone people lived in, the switch off happened. Starting in the Chatham Islands located in the south Pacific Ocean the lights began to go dark this trend continued around the world to include almost four thousand cities in eighty eight countries in twenty five different time zones, was it a success? You Bet!

Heliostat Gives Free Heat and Power

The heliostat system is a fringe market in the solar power industry. Instead of using expensive solar panels, this system uses computer controlled mirrors that track the sun and direct the suns light right into the windows of the building. It can produce around 600 watts of heat and provide enough power to light forty hundred watt light bulbs.

This is an energy that is in its early stages, for some people directing sun light through the windows of a home could be a nightmare; just imagine the brightness of the light all day long. Clearly, it needs some work but the general idea is cool, or hot depending on your point of view. In the future you could just imagine huge purpose built buildings surrounded by fields of mirrors providing heat and power to the surrounding area.

If the rumors are true, then it won’t be long before you can go down to the IKEA store and pick-up an eco friendly car. Obviously, this is going to be a concept car for the time being, but it is very interesting that a company such as IKEA would enter this marketplace.

Yet a new website http://www.roulez-leko.com/ shows the designer and car covered in a sheet. Superimposed on the sheet is a count down that is taking us to the 1^st April (April Fool’s Day) where the scheme will be revealed. Is it a car or a marketing ploy? Do you think the latter is the most likely?

It may sound somewhat strange that a house could be made from recycled cars, but why not? There are many objects made with recycled materials, so a car is just another recyclable for a new house that requires sustainable materials.

Miranda Homes, even though it’s just a start up, is making big waves in the construction industry. This is because of their chosen material, crushed cars! An old car is full of valuable resources these are broken into smaller manageable pieces that are separated through a centrifuge, this leaves plastics, metal and glass. It is the metal that Miranda Homes use to build their houses with. An average house will have a starting price of around $150,000.

Lotto Tower From Shipping Containers

In Stuttgart, Germany, a disused roundabout lies empty. It is an eyesore and yet nothing has been done to change it. However, local designer Lars Behrendt has come up with a fantastic looking tower made from around over fifty empty shipping containers.

The tower would be called the Lotto Tower as the regional lottery number will be displayed at the top, but the rest of the tower could be used for other purposes such as recreation and leisure pursuits. Nevertheless, going by the design there should be more attention made to safety features, rather than the way the building looks.

Lotto Tower From Shipping Containers

You don’t get much for a $100,000 these days in the property market, but then again it would depend on what you were looking for. These buildings may seem cramped and look as if the developer has tried to squeeze in as many properties as possible into a single space. However, this could be the next step for affordable housing.

The design is by Mario Cuccinella Architects from Italy, and in a way, they look very similar to those buildings that have been built from unused shipping containers. The difference being that the design for the outside areas with linking bridges and open areas gives a sense of open living. Sure, these hundred square feet are small, but if this complex were in the centre of a city that would be expected.

If Only Life Was This Easy

During the 1950’s and 1960’s the city of Tokyo underwent a transformation from into what we see now, a massive city of concrete, glass and advertising boards. However, this growth meant that green spaces were forgotten.

Today this thinking has changed and young forward thinking designers are planning the Green Island project replacing concrete and asphalt with green grass. If only it was that easy! With every square inch in the city having value, it is not very likely that developers are going to allow this to be turn over to grass, no matter how appealing it may sound.

If Only Life Was This Easy

Could This Be The Greenest House

Iceland would probably normally not be the first choice for someone to set up home, yet this country has some very unique and natural qualities that make Iceland an interesting place to set up home. Take this house designed by Studio Granada Architects who have used salvaged materials from around the site to build the Hof House.

This building literally blends into the countryside, the builder have used old telegraph poles, basalt pillars, grass on the roof geothermal heating and passive solar heating. It is incredible to think that this building lies just outside the Arctic Circle. However, the clever use of geothermal heating means that the heat flows through the stone floors and any excess provides some of the electrical power.

Recycled Plane Is a Hotel

Due to the current financial situation around the world, it looks as if there is going to be a surplus of airliners, but instead of just letting them rot and decay some people are coming up with ingenious ideas. Like this 747 at the Stockholm-Arlanda airport in Sweden. It has been turned into a hotel with a unique view of the airport.

This is great for people who are just staying overnight; it has twenty five rooms all with three bunks and with a room space of around six square metres. Even the flight deck has been converted for someone who wants a room with a view; there are even plans to turn the engines into rooms the fans will act as blinds.

Building an eco town is not as easy as it may seem and it has nothing to with the work involved, plans or finding the right materials, the main obstacle is other people this is because although an eco town is a good idea, nobody wants one near where they live.

This is not a problem in China where the eco town of Huangbaiyu has been completely changed over the past couple of years. Most of the buildings have been built from hay and pressed earth bricks, which is a US technology. The building has incorporated a full southern exposure, complete insulation, rooftop solar panels, and radiant heat floors.

Protest against eco village fails

Right in the heart of Shakespeare country near Stratford upon Avon it has been proposed that an eco village would both satisfy the demands for housing and be kind the area. However, those involved in the development soon found that there was a growing movement against it, including the actress Dame Judi Dench.

Despite all of the protests, the game seems to be up and Judge has ruled that the government have done nothing wrong in this situation and the planning process can continue. No doubt, the protestors will not be giving up that easy.

Waste Food From Supermarkets Turned Into Power

One of the largest supermarket chains in the UK are planning to do something worthwhile with all of the waste food that they end up with at the end of every single day. It has been estimated that just by using the waste food from their stores in Scotland they generate around forty two tonnes of food waste.

If they send this waste to a biomass electric plant that is already in operation in Motherwell each tonne of food waste would produce enough power for five hundred homes, which is far better than it being placed in landfill sites where it would produce methane gases.

Waste Food From Supermarkets Turned Into Power

Prefabricated House Made From Paper

This is a very interesting project, which sees a reasonably sized prefabricated building constructed and installed for around $5,000. What makes this great is the fact this it has been made from recycled paper, which is light, cost effective very well insulated and sturdy.

The makers say that these are for developing counties, helping the homeless and in areas devastated by natural disasters. However, in reality these buildings could in theory be used by anyone in any situation. These building measure 390 square feet, but there is no mention whether that is living space or just the foot print of the building.

Prefabricated House Made From Paper

The Wine Cask Hotel

When you think about staying in a wine cask, you may think that it could be a little tight on space, but these are not your ordinary wine casks. These used to be filled to brim with 15,000 litres of Beaujolais, so they are large enough to make a small room out of.

Oddly enough, these wine casks have been moved from France to Holland where they form part of the De Vrouwe van Stavoren Hotel. Each room is large enough for two people and includes a bedroom, bathroom and sitting room. Rates vary at the hotel but it is not unheard of to get one of these rooms for around $20 per night.

This is great idea for those place where fresh and clean water is in limited supply, simply because it looks like a standard water container, but once filled with ten litres of water the sun does the rest of the work for you.

There is an indicator which shows a red or green face, green is good and when the indicator is on green there the water inside is ready to drink, this process will take anything between three and four hours depending on how contaminated the water is.

Wind power is getting quite popular in the UK, but these huge 200+ feet high turbines, appear to be causing havoc with the UFO’s that use these areas, as the images show one wind turbine appears to have come off worse when a UFO collided with it.

This no joke, locals in the in area reporting glowing balls of light travelling around the night sky, shortly before the turbine was stuck by something. The damage is clear to see, but there is no other wreckage anywhere else near to the site to be found.

Even when some buildings claim to be green builds, there is always the possible that somewhere within the supply chain that things are not as green as we would like to believe that are. Yet there is still one to make sure that a building is eco friendly and that is to build it yourself.

Of course, not everyone has the same skills, land and resources as Fraser Koroluk from Bella Coola, BC, but we can all take a tip or two from his creation. He has built this splendid greenhouse from old windows, waste wood and leftover roofing materials, even the paint used is what was left over from previous jobs. Now he has a beautiful looking greenhouse, which has been built by hand.

Eco Building Made At Home

Homes Made From Plastic And Agricultural Fibres

In countries where natural resources are scarce, it becomes a serious problem when there is a need for new buildings or even repairs to older buildings. However, after seeing the amount of waste, which ended up in the landfill sites Elsa Zaldivar decided that something could be done about it and got together with an industrial engineer to see what, could be done.

After much work, the team found that they could produce a material, which is both strong and light, but has other qualities too. This green material is made by recycling plastic from landfill sites and mixing it with natural fibres such as those found in corn husks and palm trees. This material can help people build homes and buildings fast and economically.

Yet despite the benefits of houses, are never really seen. People tend to see a metal container rather than an excellent way of solving the growing house problems that are affecting people in most cities. These containers can be configured to whatever layout the new owner wants, this adds a bit of personality to the building.

Plastics are always going to be one of the worst and the best materials on the planet, they are bad when they are simple thrown away, but as product for recycling and reusing it is ideal. This is what the Clark Montessori High School has been doing with their green projects.

They have made a green house, but instead of using glass for the protection and generation of heat, they have used plastic bottles, like the ones, which soda and other drinks come in. Once completed it was estimated that they had used up to a thousand plastic bottles in the creation of this green house.

The Tate Gallery has been a powerhouse for recycled art or rather art made from recycled materials, and this Christmas tree is no exception at all. It uses all sorts of materials like wood and lamps, the lamps are powered by the visitors who sit on bicycles and generate power by pedalling.

The downside is if there are no volunteers then the lights will stay off, so there is a need for some willing, fit and able people at this exhibit.

Recycled Xmas Tree At The Tate

Shipping Containers Used As Store

We have seen shipping containers used to make housing, but this has to be the first time that they have been used to make a retail store. This one has been commissioned by the sports footwear company Puma and produces around eleven thousand feet of space.

This project has come to been known as Puma City, it uses twenty four shipping containers and can be fully taken apart and moved on to the next location. This unit is actually being displayed around the world. This is a very exciting project, which not only offers a great way of displaying the company’s goods, but it shows what can be done with containers.

This building recently appeared in Beijing, China it’s a totally green building made from glass and steel, but what is more interesting is that the building has a grass roof and walls. Which puts and a new slant on the term green house.

It is basically an open public exhibition area, it has been designed to assemble and disassemble very quickly, the grass panels can be moved to another location where they will remain as part of the garden, while the rest of the building is move on to its next location.

It has long been said that if we carry on in the manner that we have been doing, then it is likely that the sea levels will rise turning the earth into a real water world. Therefore, it is only natural that there should be some contingency plans put in place just in case this prophecy actually does come true.

Designers from New York have designed these temporary floating habitats, and they plan to launch the finished article sometime during 2009. These floating islands will be built from materials from junk yards, recycled wood, metal, plastic and fabric. They will get power from solar panels and wind turbines. They can also be connected to build communities if required.

Back in 2005 actor Leonardo Dicaprio paid $1.75 million for 104 acre island off the coast of Belize this had eco friendly people divided, while it is clear that the island will have major developments these will be done by using sustainable materials. This means that yes this is going to be a development on an untouched island, but its better this way rather than other less caring developers getting a hold of it.

The finishing off date is likely to be sometime during 2009, about a year later than expected and at a cost of around $30 million. However, the development has been done well with, buildings being carefully integrated into current landscapes, power provided by solar power, wind turbines and bio diesel.

Revolving Door Generates Power

If you imagine how many revolving doors there are in the world, then imagine what it would be like if they all generated power every time that somebody used one of them. This would indeed produce a huge amount of power.

This use of kinetic energy means that after the cost of installation has been met, each time that the door is used it produces a small amount of power, each door is estimated to generate around 4600 kilo watts per hour. Within the system the there are LED’s which change colour when the unit is generating power, very cool.

Vatican Goes For Solar Power

There is one thing that used to be said about the Vatican is that it is set in its ways and those ways go back for hundreds of years, yet recently they have changed for the better. One of the latest additions to the Vatican is five thousand square feet worth of solar panels.

This installation contains two thousand four hundred photovoltaic solar panels costing an estimated $1.6 million. The system will produce around 300 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy in a year, this is enough to power the Nervi Hall and when this is not in use the power simple goes into the Vatican power grid.

Will The White House Be Going Green?

It seems that there could be some eco friendly changes going on in the White House at the end of January when the Obama family move in. Because the President elect has some green plans that he wants to go over with the buildings chief usher.

There are a couple topics that Barrak Obama is interested in, but the main change will be in energy efficiency. Anyone walking past the White House next year may be surprised to see the lights off more than before and inside energy waste will be kept to a minimum.

This is nice idea where wind power can be used to power seasonal lighting, these lights are only tiny LED builds, but they use a small 2.4 inch propeller, which is very similar to one of those that children play with.

The lights stand on pole and because of the way, that propeller is made it only takes the smallest breeze to get the thing moving and begin to produce light. However, what is great about these is that they can be used in large groups to produce a spectacular design that does not use any power at all, excellent!

Well if designer and eco architect Patrick Marsilli has his way then yes this is the type of building that, we could be looking it for future living.

Because of it shape the building can be rotated, this means that the building could slowly follow the sun thereby maximising the heat and light given off from the sun, which is essential when it comes to eco living.

The building is made from ninety per cent FSC certified wood, while cork which is very eco friendly has been used for the insulation and the building could even survive a cat 5 hurricane or earthquake with the magnitude of eight.

Looking around the docks of the world there is one thing that stands out and that would be the amount of shipping containers that are left lying around. Now these are mostly forty foot long and six or seven feet wide, if fact that is an ideal room size.

The Greentainer Project takes these containers and makes them into something wonderful, by removing the sides to put in glass and by replacing the floor with synthetic grass. All of sudden this dark and cold thing has become something bright and cheerful. Roof top solar panels have been fitted to provide power for lighting etc.

London Follows San Francisco On Gardens

With London hosting the next Olympic Games in 2012, the last thing that the authorities want is for London to look a mess, yes the sports arenas will be hi-tech, but the surrounding areas need some work too. San Francisco has an initiative to increase the amount of garden space and London is planning to follow by creating 2012 new garden spaces in time for the Olympics.

The project is looking for open spaces that can be rejuvenated; these can be anywhere industrial, commercial or residential. The project, which will be known, as Capital Growth and they will provide all that is necessary to get this going.

What areas are they looking for?

Housing estates

Hospitals, mental health trusts and care homes

Universities and colleges

Prisons and young offender’s institutions

Schools

Utility land managed by the water board and railway authorities

British Waterways land

Flat roofs

Estates (e.g. National Trust, Church estate, agricultural college land)

Farms and agricultural holdings

Greenhouses or other facilities that have fallen out of use

Parks and community gardens

Local authority green spaces throughout the borough

Farmers wanting to give over some of their land for community benefit

Donald Trump’s Golf Course Gets Go Ahead

It was not that long ago when the local planning people threw out the proposed golf course and resort in Scotland planned by Donald Trump, but Mr Trump said that he would be back and he was true to his word. This time he has the backing of the Scottish first minsters Alex Salmond, who is saying that in this current climate an investment like this would be great.

With so much opposition, Donald Trump would have seemed to have needed a miracle to get this decision overturned. Well this has seemed to have happened in the guise of the credit crunch, for if this had not happened Donald Trump would have stood little chance of getting this through, but since the financial problems governments have been doing strange things. The development is on 2,000 acres and will include two 18 hole golf courses, nearly 4,000 timeshare flats, 500 homes, 35 villas and housing for 400 staff.

Lakefield College School welcomed back a former student the Duke of York, he was there for the second time this year to open the school’s first gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental design) building, a $13.8 million Hadden Hall building.

An LEED certification can only be given to buildings and have been built by using sustainable materials and that meet the tight environmental building standards of the area.

Secret Eco Village Spotted by a Plane

In the UK survey, planes have been used for a while to map areas, especially remote areas that have no direct access by road, so you can imagine the shock when the flight crew spotted an unchartered village in Wales.

It turns out that village has been there for five years, they generate their power and grow their own food, but village, which is home to twenty two people, was without any planning permission and after living the eco life, the fate of the village lay in the hands of the local authority. Fortunately, they have a sustainability policy and so the village is safe, although its secret is not.
