This design is in response to a programme run by the Andes Spouts Society, the idea of which is to design a small portable housing unit that has been made with environmentally friendly materials and is virtually self sufficient when it comes to power, water and waste.

This idea has been designed by Nice Architects from Slovakia; the idea being that is crosses the boundaries between gypsy caravan and RV trailer. Each unit has around 270 sq ft to play with and should be able to easily provide accommodation for two people or more if they were not fussy at all. Its collects rainwater, has solar or wind power and actually in general just looks really cool and futuristic.

Sometimes a design comes along that just encompasses all that is eco, and this could be it. It is a portable power generator. Most people know that solar or wind power are not 100% reliable all of the time, but this unit utilises both methods of power generation.

Therefore, we have a source of power, two fifty watt solar panels that can produce around eighty amp hours every day and a wind turbine to help out when there is no sun. This is great for emergency situations and for remote areas, even though it has a price tag of $5,000.

In 2009, there will be two companies introducing tents made from recycled materials. Nemo’s OZ , which is almost entirely made from recycled materials and the use of sustainable bamboo poles, and Big Agnes, whose offering will be The Salt Creek, another tent virtually made from 100% recycled materials are the new exciting products coming to the market soon!

When you mention going on an eco trip or holiday, people would normally be thinking of roughing it, with none of the basics that we all take for granted, such as showers and working bathrooms. However, just because this is a green break it does not necessarily mean that life’s little luxuries go out of the window. Support local organic businesses first.

Buy organic within western North America if we can’t find it locally.

Use recycled products as much as possible.

Natural organic rubber mattresses. A sleep you will dream of afterwards.

Our vehicles run on mostly Bio-diesel .

Using only alternative energy sources at our resort and as much as possible at home such as solar, wind, geothermal, river and human power.

A music festival is one of those things where it is hard to think of it as being eco friendly, after all, there are huge demands on local resources such as water and there is always the waste too. However, the Latitude festival, which just happens to be down the road from where I live, starts today and is known as the UK’s greenest festival.

Every ticket holder gets a special waste kit, which comprises of a compost bag for food, a bag for plastic bottles and other recyclables, plus a black bin bag for all other waste, which can then be put into the correct bins that are around the site.

What can you do when you are stranded at one end of the music festival camping area, while the shower blocks are at the other end and thousands of tents are in between, it is just a nightmare? But this can really happen and being dirty is just so un-cool these days.

Of course it does not have to be used at a music festival, these solar showers which cost around $10, can be used virtually anywhere. It is so simple to get some free hot water, all that you need to do is fill the bag up with water, lay it down with the black side towards the sun and wait around three hours. That is it, free hot water, depending on the actual strength of the sun the water temperature can vary between 70f right up to 150f, and you could make a hot drink with that!

Go the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York you may be in for a little surprise in what you find there. For it may not be as contemporary as you first may of thought. The work on display has been made by students from various Universities. But one who student from the Appalachian State University produced a series called Waste Not Lamps.

These lamps have been produced by virtually 100% used plastic utensils, like the ones which can be found in fast food places etc. yet these lamps have been made almost entirely from these materials which save them from ending up in the land fill site or somewhere else similar.

Using rechargeable batteries are great for a couple of reason, they can be used over and over again, plus you do not have to keep throwing them away. Batteries in land fill site do not really make for good waste disposal!

When you have a picnic table that is left outside, the table and seat parts tend to rot after a while, especially if you live in an area where there tends to be a lot of rain or is damp. But while those parts rot away the frame actually stays in tact and this can be a bit of a waste.

But the people at Snow Shack have come up with an ingenious way of using all of those old recycled skis which may sound a bit over the top, but when you look at it, the finished item looks really smart and because skis are strong and laminated they are strong and easy to keep clean.

Because of the nature of the product, clearly the design and colouring is going to change slightly every now and then, but for $485 you will be getting a decent looking table for the garden which measures 30” x 60”.

These are great fro the outdoors they will provide both heat and light, these log torches come from environmentally produced sources.

Each log will last around an hour, and when they have finished they will be completely gone leaving just a pile of ashes which can be easily and eco friendly disposed of.

The wood comes from Estonia where they make furniture, but before the wood is harvested the areas need to be cleared and it is the dead wood that is used to make these logs.

We all know for a fact that the green environment is slowly being tarnished by our ever increasing demands for vices that have defected most of our natural habitat and unless we try harder, chances are we may continue to witness its forever dilapidation.

We can make a difference. It starts with one simple push on our parts. We hardly need the effort. Working our way towards upholding the things to be done for environmental tasks will surely go a long way.

As reported in Hispanic Magazine, June/July issue, Lost Maples State Natural Park in Vanderpool, Texas is a nature lovers sanctuary as the park abounds with gorgeous colorful maple trees, 10 miles of hiking trails, lake views, plentiful picnic and camping facilities. Their website states that “the park is a combination of steep, rugged limestone canyons, springs, plateau grasslands, wooded slopes, and clear streams. It features a large, isolated stand of uncommon Uvalde Bigtooth Maple, whose fall foliage can be spectacular”.

The state of Texas is home to some three-quarters of the nation’s bird species, and many call Lost Maples their home or rest stop on their way to other migratory routes. The folks over at Nalgene, have created a simple yet profound campaign to urge us all to buy and use refillable water bottles, instead of buying the more convenient but earth-destroying disposable variety.

Their slogan is Refill not Landfill, and they state that they want to promote the use of any refillable water bottle, not just theirs. This small change can make a big difference in reducing the amount of plastic water bottles that end up as waste in our landfills, the energy used, and the oil expended to produce plastic disposable water bottles. They have created a pledge page so that you can decide to make a commitment for one week, one month, or one year to using refillable bottles.

Green Fair a Hit in the U.K.

What are summers for, if not to attend fun, interesting, and entertaining outdoor festivals. The Green Festival, based in the U.K., is an annual event staged to bring peace loving and environment minded people together.

The festival this year takes place on Sunday, June 17th.

The South Somerset Green Fair brings people together to “raise awareness and explore positive solutions through appropriate technology, artistic expression, local distinctiveness, organic food production, sustainable resources and an environmental information exchange“.

The U.K. has wonderful and fun eco festivals and fairs. The Green Fair first began in the year 2002 and since then has grown and turned into a must see and go to event.

It is indeed hard to distinguish which companies are sincere with their entire mission into changing and shifting towards helping green environment awareness to be a part of their operations. The negative implications of industries such as logging and tobacco have had their tags made as early as some years back. But this does not entirely hold that they are shutting down.

As a means of focusing more on business concerns, these companies are aiming to go green. People may condemn them because of their practices, but the truth of the matter is, they simply want to continue to operate.

Teijin Fibres Limited has recently produced a line of high performance polyester fabrics called Eco-Storm. They are water-proof, moisture permeable and are made of completely recycled fibres.

What makes this line even better is that the polyester fabric can be easily recycled with the Eco Circle recycling system to make new products.

The line is available at Mountain Equipment Co-op in Canada and Patagonia and NAU in the USA.
