Yesterday’s News Do-Gooder Awards Contest for Cat Owners

It pays to be eco-friendly and others want to know the proper measures to be green. Though we all have our own ways of going green, Yesterday’s News wants to know which eco-friendly habits are being done. From the simple turning off of the electric switch all the way to proper garbage disposal or even recycling practices, all these count in Yesterday’s News Do-Gooder Awards Contest. The contest invites all cat owners to submit stories on how they incorporate eco-friendly habits into their daily lives.

Three winners will be selected to receive $5,000 for themselves, a year’s supply of Yesterday’s News litter for their cat, and $15,000 for their community.

America’s Next Top GREEN Model

There is always a contest of some sort to try and discover the next top model. But this time, there is an added niche; the Next Top GREEN Model. This new contest is a brainchild of Project Green Search which aims to bring out the new face of green fashion which has been obviously growing throughout the years. It’s the glamour and style of fashion modeling, only this time everything will be eco-friendly, from the tips of your toes to the ends of your hair.

This exciting competition is being sponsored by progressive green fashion retailer The Green Loop, and is supported by a host of media and corporate sponsors. It is also happening in conjunction with Portland Fashion Week (October 7-11 2009), which is an all-green celebration of sustainable style.

To enter, you must be at least 17 years of age (must get parent or guardian consent if under 18). No previous modeling experience is necessary, though you must be available to attend Portland Fashion Week.

America’s Next Top GREEN Model

Eco-friendly Mouse-Trap Model Car Competition in HongKong

Creativity and innovation is perhaps the theme for this contest held in Hong Kong which challenged students to come up with a model car design through their available materials. The only materials that they were given was a mouse trap and some recyclable materials.

The Mouse trap model car competition saw students compete to design and build a model car using only recycled materials and a toy mouse trap. The Eco-model tournament featured 126 student teams aged 10 – 15, from a number of schools, to demonstrate how easily recycled products can be incorporated into daily lives.

To win, the model car had to be designed well and also successfully tow a smaller toy car along a 10m track. The winning car was made by Chang Pui Chung Memorial School fought off stiff competition to claim the top spot.

Students from the winning team said, “Wow, we are so pleased to win! It was a close call as some of the other cars were really cool but we were glad ours got the prize. It has helped us to understand how old materials can be reused. Even rubbish can be fun.”

The Tate Gallery has been a powerhouse for recycled art or rather art made from recycled materials, and this Christmas tree is no exception at all. It uses all sorts of materials like wood and lamps, the lamps are powered by the visitors who sit on bicycles and generate power by pedalling.

The downside is if there are no volunteers then the lights will stay off, so there is a need for some willing, fit and able people at this exhibit.

There are plenty of people out there who see a green idea and think to themselves, “I could have thought of that”. Well my friends this is now your chance to get those ideas flowing and down on paper for the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2009.

They are looking for some cool green ideas, which can towards solving the problems of carbon footprints, energy efficiency or a green gadget, which will make us all, go “Wow!” The top fifty entries will be published online and then once the finalists have been selected the conference goers will discuss their ideas and the winners will be decided upon who will get a bonus of $3,000, $1,000 or $1,000.

Making Green Sense with Paperless Banking

We are at an age where online banking and transactions are a privilege. To many people, it is a benefit that has done away with having to go to the bank or line up for your turn in local banks. But the problem is not all people are aware or are confident about it.

Hence, the Green$ense program launched by Citizens Bank should be something that can refresh our memories on how to maximize the ease and benefits of online banking. The notable thing here is preaching a paperless environment, saving a lot of trees and lowering the growing rate of landfills and trash issues we have to deal with.

The best part of it all is that by signing up with the Green$ense program is that it allows people to earn while they are at it.

Green$ense allows customers to earn up to $120 annually for each electronic transaction they make, including debit transactions, online bill payments and recurring payments. Citizens Bank launched a campaign to promote the program last month with the tagline: “The Environment is like a bank account. Every little bit helps.”

In order to boost its eco friendly image, power provider British Gas is to fund a new children’s television programme imaginatively named “Green Up Your Life” which is going to be a series of ten five minute long shows.

Children will be given a challenge, which is directly related to the environment, these may include recycling, or water conservation. At the end of the series, the child who comes out on top will be crowned the “Eco Ranger”.

GreenFest Opens This Weekend in Chicago

I wrote about Washington DC GreenFest and the San Fransisco GreenFest a few months ago, and now it is time for the Chicago GreenFest. Green Fest hits Navy Pier in Chicago, this weekend, May 17 and 18.

With over 350 businesses and 150 speakers, this eco friendly minded festival shakes up Chi-Town. This is a rather large event, in 2007 there were over 31,000 attendees, and this year sets the stage for an even bigger event.

You can do all of the following (and more) at the 2008 Chicago GreenFest:

watch a demonstration
mingle with other eco conscious consumers
visit booths from local green busineeses
sample vegetarian and vegan fare
pick up green freebies
join contests
and so much more.

The Green Festival kicks off today till 8pm, and opens again tomorrow, May 18, from 11am till 6pm in Chicago’s Navy Pier.

Whether you run a restaurant or a dry cleaner, there are things you can do to lower your carbon footprint. It all starts by taking an assessment of your enterprise and looking around at your various departments. You can do a complete overhaul, or you can start small and build from there.

Educate yourself on green issues and research possible solutions and providers. When you go green it imparts a message of sustainability that will grab the interest of todays savvy consumers. It isn’t enough anymore to recycle and call yourself eco friendly. It will take more than that, but keep in mind it should not turn into a competition of who is greener. The mission of becoming more socially aware and responsible should more or less align with your overall company goals and mission.

Let’s take a look below at 4 Random Ideas To Green Your Business.

The 3 R’s (Recycle Reduce Reuse) – What are you recycling? Are there more things that can be recycled at your company? PC equipment is a big e-waste issue today as most landfills are brimming with discarded computer units, monitors, printers, scanners, etc. It may be costly to find a proper solution and provider, but you will reap rewards when you let your current and prospective customers know, that you are different and you care enough about our planet to discard properly and safeguard our future.

Save Money and Conserve, Too – Again all it takes is for you to take a good look around and see where, what, and how you can conserve more. Take a look at something as simple as the ink in your office printers. The ink can be refilled at Cartridge World, versus buying brand new each time. This method is two-fold in that it conserves and will save you money, too. The ink for my small home office printer brand new costs about $25, but to refill at Cartridge World, it sets me back all of $13.

Use Energy Efficient Products – More and more major manufacturers are creating energy efficient products. Look for the EPA’s label titled “Energy Star” which certifies the item as meeting standards for energy efficiency.

Enlist a Consultant – If your wanting to go big, and perform a complete overhaul of your operations, your best bet is to seek the services of a consultant. Find an architect or interior designer that specialize in green design and/ or green renovation. If you’re wanting to green the outdoors part of your company, seek the services of a professional eco friendly landscaper.
