Most people know that a lemon can be very acidic and would take some effort to eat one. However, there is a good use for lemons and it is not cutting them up to put them in a drink either. This is a clock that does not need power from batteries, solar or even the mains, because the clock can get enough power from a lemon to make the clock work.

To make it work, the lemon is cut in half and each half is then placed onto the two copper and zinc prongs and that is it, a lemon, lime or orange will produce enough power to run the clock for around a week and make the room smell nice too.

But this time around, the new comic spectacular is not about fighting over Archie but rather to help promote eco-friendliness through tips and ideas like green shopping, fashion and activities. A definite must have for all eco-friendly readers and of course the legendary Archie comic fans.

Dialog is believable, and Betty and Veronica and their supporting characters all ring true to long established personalities. But don’t ask me about the nuances of wearing a bikini to the beach, or doing my nails, or flirting appropriately with the new hunk in town.

Children will be given a challenge, which is directly related to the environment, these may include recycling, or water conservation. At the end of the series, the child who comes out on top will be crowned the “Eco Ranger”.

A music festival is one of those things where it is hard to think of it as being eco friendly, after all, there are huge demands on local resources such as water and there is always the waste too. However, the Latitude festival, which just happens to be down the road from where I live, starts today and is known as the UK’s greenest festival.

Every ticket holder gets a special waste kit, which comprises of a compost bag for food, a bag for plastic bottles and other recyclables, plus a black bin bag for all other waste, which can then be put into the correct bins that are around the site.

Boating is not a very green way of getting around, some boat leave oil and fuel on the surface of the water, not mention the damage that is done to shoreline etc. but what if there was a way to use the river and coastline in eco friendly manner, would that be better?

Of course it would, and a company based in the South of France has the idea of using the sun to power their boats to great effect.

Technical Data for the 550 Solar boat with 800 W engine:

The boat is built from polyester GRP. The boat uses the 3 bowls building method with floating unsinkbar.

GreenFest Opens This Weekend in Chicago

I wrote about Washington DC GreenFest and the San Fransisco GreenFest a few months ago, and now it is time for the Chicago GreenFest. Green Fest hits Navy Pier in Chicago, this weekend, May 17 and 18.

With over 350 businesses and 150 speakers, this eco friendly minded festival shakes up Chi-Town. This is a rather large event, in 2007 there were over 31,000 attendees, and this year sets the stage for an even bigger event.

You can do all of the following (and more) at the 2008 Chicago GreenFest:

This has been a very long time coming, it the green basket ball, well actually its black and is eco friendly because it uses forty per cent recycled rubber. Now that may not seem to be much, but surely anything that is recycled is better than nothing.

However it has been estimated that when seventy of these balls are purchased, then that will be the equivalent of a car tyre, now that really does makes sense because tyres and land fill sites just do not make good partners.

To make the whole package green, the makers Wilson have also made sure that the packaging that the ball comes in use eighty per cent recycled cardboard.

In this case the designer Choi Jung Hyun has put the keys to good use by creating something worthwhile. This viper has computer keys instead of the normal scaly skin that you would expect to see on a snake, in fact it could be a cool new design for keyboard too.

It’s amazing what can be made from recycled tinned cans, like this bird by Ann Built.

The cans are recycled into this wonderful flying bird with a wingspan of around twelve inches that have loops in so that you can thread the fishing line that is supplied. Then the bird can be hung from the ceiling, looks great!

You will be slotted into certain groups of fellow green people, but that is good, for at least you can now see profiles of people who think like you.

A lot of the consumers have gone green as of late but a lot of them have been restricted towards their local regions. The world is pretty much interested on what they are and with this new resort being launched by Greenpeace, lots of undiscovered products are sure to be enumerated soon.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don’t have e-mail addresses.
6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.
7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.
8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn’t have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.
10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.
11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )
12. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.
13. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn’t#9 on this list

Guys, pick up your date on your bicycle if possible, or else impress her by arriving in a hybrid car.
When exchanging gifts, eschew
metallic gift wrapping and packaging that will get thrown away. Instead
look for something reusable, like a decorative linen napkin. Or give as
a gift membership in an eco-conscious organization.
If the gift is jewelry, help recycling efforts by buying an antique or estate-sale piece.
When preparing for a date, women should avoid shampoos
and cosmetics that use animal products or synthetic preservatives. A
Certified Organic label indicates the product is eco-friendly.
In the green bedroom, opt for bedding made from
100-percent organic cotton hand-picked in India. Wash it in
phosphate-free detergents and avoid chlorine bleach.
Use a dimmer light to save energy, and a ceiling fan instead of air conditioning.
To save water – shower together

Current TV and the Alliance for Climate Protection have joined forces to bring us “creative and provocative ecospots.”

It’s a contest, where you can make an eco-video and judges like George Clooney, Cameron Diaz and Rihanna will judge them. The best entires will hit television screens and the winner gets a hybrid SUV.

I’m sorry, but I think that’s as crazy as the folks over at Ecorazzi do.

Now, don’t get me wrong, equipping SUVs with hybrid technology is a beautiful small step to reducing the issues of global warming. But that’s all it is. I’m not sure if the organizers were worried that mainstream American culture would be turned off by the thought of winning something that isn’t an SUV, but with current mileage estimates for this thing coming in at around 31 city/27 highway, I’m really wishing the contest had a truly “green” prize. How about giving someone the option to have solar installed at their home or tricking out a Prius or two?
