The Solar “Shelf” For Cars

This concept seems to be one of those usual car shades placed at the spoiler part of the car. But they are really solar powered “shelves” as Leon Zhu of China would call it, serving as a shade for the car when not in use. When fully charged, this device helps power in-car electronic systems such as the air-conditioning system and other electronic-related devices. It is foldable and hopefully fastened because if not, it may eventually expand and pose as a hazard for other nearby cars or worse, get lost just like a piece of paper without something to bind them together.

Eco-friendly Waterless Car Wash Service

Eco-Friendly Cylinder Head Cover Launched

Ford cars, particularly the 2010 Fusion and Escape models will come out with something eco-friendly. The new cylinder head covers for these vehicles will be made of recycled material, grinding used nylon carpeting into fiber and recapturing the materials in the process. The resulting product is a high-quality nylon resin, which Dana Holding Corp., then uses to mold into cylinder-head covers through its injection-molding process.

The cylinder-head covers are part of a module-based sealing system Dana supplies for the Ford Fusion and Escape programs, which also includes the engine cover, gaskets, fasteners, baffle/air-oil separator, and isolators.

Eco-Friendly Cylinder Head Cover Launched

Ontario Unveils Eco-friendly License Plates

The best way to pair of eco-friendly transportation is to have them sport eco-friendly license plates. Apparently Ontario will be doing this as they are set to introduce eco-friendly license plates for the said vehicles by next year. These new green license plates will be used for hybrid and electric cars and those not really on the road. The plate, which features a green border and lettering on a white background, with a trillium, is expected to be available as part of Ontario’s Electric Vehicle initiative, which begins July 1.

Honda and Toyota Unveils Eco-Friendly Concept Cars

As expected, among the vehicles that were anticipated to be showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show included new eco-friendly cars thriving on electric power. And two top names stood out, Honda and Toyota, as they unveiled their eco-friendly concept cars in the Honda Skydeck and the Toyota EVII. Both thrive on batteries and have been remodeled to maintain car balance, a prime factor in the efficient travel of a vehicle to date.

These new cars follow the footsteps of the previous electric cars launched by the two companies. Honda unveiled the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. Other car manufacturers are expected to follow as car demand has now slowly dipped its hand towards the electric car segment.

As far as the 2010 Coda Sedan, better speed seems to be on the horizon as BorgWarner unveils a new eGearDrive transmission system called the BorgWarner 31-03 eGearDrive. This is a single-speed transmission that promises to deliver high torque capacity, efficiency and low noise, vibration and harshness in a compact vehicle.

BorgWarner through its new technological gear, promises to propel the five-passenger CODA sedan at highway speeds while providing maximum powertrain efficiency.

Available for just about $5, you can get this plastic emblem that can light up presumably when you are speeding up along the roads. Though the original emblems are still desired by picky car owners, it is an idea.

BMW has announced that it has plans to unveil an eco-friendly sports car this September. The eco-friendly sports car is the EfficientDynamics Vision which will be shown first at the Frankfurt Motorshow. The concept of the EfficientDynamics Eco Sports car was borrowed from the GINA concept which was likewise recently revealed.

If the new car continues innovations such as the fabric skin developed for the GINA, BMW may be the first of the major automakers to seriously pursue the Hypercar strategy of ultra-light automobile design suggested by theorists such as Avory Lovins at the Rocky Mountain Institute. This would represent a break, albeit only in concept car form, from the more incremental approach to weight reduction that seems to have ruled industry thinking up to this time.

Stated in the Cash for Clunkers clause, “All trade-ins must be disabled and scrapped by a disposal facility that is a part of the End of Life Vehicle Solutions program and has been approved by the NHTSA.”

Toyota Starts Focus on Cash for Clunkers Program

Most car dealers are now coming out with their list of cars eligible for the Cash for Clunkers program. Included in that batch is Toyota which has officially revealed its lineup of cars which consumers can consider getting after trading in their vehicle. There are 25 Toyota models offered which will qualify for car rebates ranging from $3,500 to $4,500.

The program will start today until November 1 or until they last. All Toyota and Scion passenger cars and most Toyota trucks, vans and SUVs are eligible for government incentives under the program. In addition, some Lexus models also qualify.

For the interested parties, you can check out the Toyota website to see the complete list of qualifying models. You can also make the necessary computations for what car you are trading in versus the Toyota model you plan on buying or leasing.

Guiding London Motorists on the Congestion Charge Program

For cities that are aching to resolve the traffic problems, here is one scheme that may be of interest. London, classic as they may seem has its share of traffic problems, particularly in the Central London. But with this scheme called the Congestion Charge program, some control on the part of motorists may ultimately make motorists think twice before entering the congested streets of main London.

Simply put, the Congestion Charge is the amount charged to motorists who intend to use their car into the city. Depending on the time of the day, various fees shall be charged to motorists traveling in and out of the C-Zone or Central London. The costs are £8 – if you pay by midnight on the day you actually travel, or £10 – if you decide to pay by midnight the following day. No fees are charged on weekends.

Through the use of cameras, cars coming in and out are monitored and verified via the database. If the C-Charge for your plate is paid then you are well and good. But if you are found to have not paid, you can face stiff fines and penalties of up to £100.

Pay up within 14 days and that’s reduced to £50. Fail to pay within 28 days and it goes up to £150. After that, you’re in the hands of the County Court, so it’s a lot easier to pay your £8 or £10 up front.

The foundation is called the Songs of Love Foundation with their CARS (Children Are Receiving Songs) program. Dedicating the cause to help sick children, the foundation accepts donated cars, trucks, recreational vehicles and boats, which are then sold to generate proceeds for its mission of music.

There is no need for the donor to take the car anywhere as the foundation comes and picks up the vehicle at the donor’s location, free of charge. A receipt is given for tax deduction purposes which should be a consolation if you talk about getting something out of it.

You’ve heard the phrase “It ain’t rocket science”? Well, actually it is. Ichiro Sugioka is the science officer at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center in California, and has a PhD in aeronautical engineering.

The Volvo ReCharge is his project.

This plug-in hybrid with a small internal combustion engine for backup goes beyond the current competition in economy and efficiency.

It can travel 60 miles on a three-hour charge, and from zero to 60 mph in about nine seconds. Carbon emissions are expected to be less than half that of any other hybrid out there now, and the cost to drive it should be eighty percent less than any fossil-fuel powered car. The ReCharge has an electric motor in each wheel – the ultimate four-wheel drive.

A lot of other innovations are in the works, and while it’s not quite a space ship, it sure looks like the future of travel on the ground. Zoom! Zoom!

The Volvo Recharge, Green With Speed

Toyota Announces Mass Production of Plug-in Vehicles

It is evident that Toyota is going with the flow of car demands and apparently the clamor is geared more towards fuel efficient or hybrid plug-in cars. And if business directive is to be considered, that is exactly what the Japan-based manufacturer plans to do as they have announce a plan that will slowly disseminate the number of hybrids in the market, starting with the lease of 500 plug-in cars for the government and corporations while likewise stating that they will employ a mass production of the said vehicles by 2012.

To date, Toyota will aim to produce 20,000 to 30,000 unit by 2012, expecting the demand for these vehicles to balloon in the coming years. Toyota wants to price its plug-in hybrids at a comparable price to Mitsubishi Motors Corp’s all-electric car, which debuts this month to fleet customers in Japan at 4.59 million yen ($47,800) before government subsidies.

Toyota’s new Prius gasoline-electric hybrid costs less than half that, starting at 2.05 million yen in Japan. Toyota’s plug-ins will be able to run 20-30 km (12.4-18.6 miles) on battery power alone at full charge, the paper said.

Toyota does not have to prove that its eco-friendly responsibilities are always present in vehicles that they offer. And now, it looks like the UK people are acknowledging that need, looking at the Toyota Urban Cruiser as a viable vehicle to consider.

The car is for those who want the rugged four by four feeling without the ‘Chelsea Tractor’ image and is a softer alternative to the Toyota Land Cruiser. Aimed at singles and couples in their thirties and forties, rival models include the Suzuki SX4, the Kia Soul and the much-publicised Nissan Qashqai.

Two models are currently available; the two-wheel drive 1.3 litre petrol and the four-wheel drive 1.4 litre diesel. Both models produce around a humble 130g/km of CO2 and with the Toyota ‘Optimal Drive’ feature, official fuel figures are an impressive 51.4-mpg for the petrol and 57.6-mpg combined for the diesel.

Hyundai Welcomes First Cash For Clunker Customer

While everyone is still studying their options for the Cash for Clunkers deal or the Car Allowance Rebate System, Hyundai announces that it is ready to entertain folks and also reveal their very first customer for the said deals.

Katherine Michon of Arlington, Virginia was the first to trade-in an eligible clunker for a new Hyundai, replacing her 15 mile-per-gallon 1995 Ford Explorer with a 26 mile-per-gallon Hyundai Elantra Touring, at Alexandria Hyundai in Alexandria, Virginia.

Hyundai buyers will receive the full rebate allocated under the CARS program (also known as “cash for clunkers”) when an eligible trade-in is exchanged for a qualifying Hyundai model.

Hyundai is the first automaker to extend the government incentive to consumers, accelerating its implementation by several weeks by backing dealerships with short-term cash advances as the government organizes the rollout of the program industry-wide.

Satelite Autoglass has opened a new eco-friendly facility in Ontario, California, boasting of lesser carbon footprints and a large plant using eco-friendly considerations. Safelite AutoGlass is an acclaimed leader in vehicle glass and repair and a lot of environmental considerations have been added towards the opening of their new location.

Among the highlights of their new facility include efficient electric materials handling equipment, low flow/ motion sensor water fixtures, and highly efficient T5 motion/daylight fluorescent lighting sensors that work in conjunction with roof mounted skylights.

The company is also exploring the efficiency of adding photovoltaic cells to its facility’s roofline, and is seeking ways to increase its use of recyclable packing materials. Company-wide, Safelite employees recycle corrugated cardboard and pallets; its leaders are now seeking methods to recycle its scrap laminated glass.

“Safelite has developed a new direction for the company in 2009, one that is intended to completely change the company culture over the next four years,” Feeney said.

Fuel Lock Program from Hyundai and Pricelock Announced

There is a new program that aspiring car owners and fuel consumption saver people may want to check out, courtesy of Hyundai and Pricelock. The two companies have come up with a new program which will lock the price of fuel to $1.49 per gallon for a year on select new car models under the Hyundai brand.

For the Hyundai program, Pricelock will issue car buyers fuel cards, similar to credit cards, which drivers will use to purchase gasoline at any of the 165,000 participating gas stations, approximately 93% of all service stations in the U.S. Using the Pricelock card, the car buyer will be charged $1.49 per gallon for fuel, regardless of the price on the pump.

Of course, if the pump price is below $1.49 per gallon, the cardholder will not use the fuel card, but instead will pay the lower pump price using cash or a credit or debit card and still be able to participate in the upside.

There are a lot of things the Supermini is. In fact, you may even call its overall structure as already eco-friendly, being a compact vehicle that seems to be a motorist’s choice for fuel consumption savings. However, it looks like Aston Martin will improve on the Supermini, combining sporty looks in a magnificent compact car level. The 1.0 hatchback which they are calling the Cygnet which accelerate from 0 to 60 seconds in 14.7 seconds. Whoa!

The car will be eligible for the cheapest tax band thanks to its low emissions. The car is based on Toyota’s IQ city car but is given the Aston Martin makeover with a sporty grille, alloy wheels, and luxury interior.

The Cygnet will cost a fraction of its high-powered siblings, such as the £160,000 DBS, by selling for around the £20,000 mark.

Hummer Is Not Green Enough for China

China has been trying hard to address environmental issues and while many would agree that they are still far off, you have to give them credit for putting their foot down. The unlucky group caught in this constraint is the Hummer, which many know is a huge gas guzzling vehicle.

While the Asian market is attractive and possibly receptive, the intervention of the Hummer entering China waters has become a fueled (pun!) contemporary issue. Unless Hummer can prove that this monstrous carbon offender offers something better and new, it won’t be appearing in the Chinese auto market any time soon.

The country’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is also concerned that Tengzhong lacks expertise in car production, the report said, but the company dismissed the story as speculative. Insiders at the company believe that negotiations with regulators are progressing well, that the Chinese government has not taken a view, and that it will assuage any environmental concerns by promising that future generations of Hummers will be significantly greener.

With the growing interest on this government instituted program, people who are planning to avail of this program are advised to be wiser in dealing with them.

www.cashforclunkersfacts.com posted a warning. We also urge consumers not to give out their social security numbers or other sensitive information to anyone calling or emailing them to register for the CARS program or the Cash for Clunkers program.

To check if you are eligible for the CARS program, all you have to do is go to the site and check it out for yourself. If they are qualified, they can go to a local dealer and purchase their new car. These are the only steps and nothing else.

Other than that, discard and disregard that email. Don’t add another headache to your growing pains of financial strains today.

Suzuki Motors has lauded the government efforts in helping address the problem of old vehicle emissions as well as to kick-start the drive towards new affordable vehicles today which incidentally is similar to the Cash for Clunkers deal.

The new CARS law will provide consumers up to $4,500 when they trade-in their old cars for a new one. The qualifying cars under this new law signed by U.S. President Barack Obama covers cars, mini vans, SUVs and small light-duty trucks that get less than 18 mpg, and large light-duty trucks that get less than 15 mpg city/highway combined.

However there are certain conditions for passenger cars. If the new vehicle is at least four mpg more fuel efficient than the old vehicle, consumers will receive a $3,500 voucher toward a new vehicle. If the new vehicle is at least 10 mpg more fuel efficient than the old vehicle, the voucher is good for $4,500.

For reference purposes, here are the cars that Suzuki detailed as eligible for the new CARS law:

All SX4 Crossover models
All SX4 Sedan models
All Grand Vitara models
All XL7 models
All Equator models (4-cyl and 6-cyl)

Audi TDI is gearing up to help address the growing need for carbon emission issues with the announcement that they will donate $1 to The Nature Conservancy voluntary carbon offset program for every Facebook user who joins the cause.

The donation will directly benefit The Nature Conservancy voluntary carbon offset program, which features the Tensas River Basin as its first project. The Tensas River Basin Project counterbalances carbon emissions by reforesting private lands to capture and store carbon, as well as to restore critical habitats to native species.

Cracking down on the carbon emission issue may seem common these days as various groups and sectors are trying to do their part to address it. And with the intent to help restructure the dilapidating forests through the Nature Conservancy effort, Audi becomes another key player to try in the fight for a cleaner and greener community aside from its contribution towards the car industry.

“Our engineers are always innovating to reduce our vehicles’ carbon emissions, and we’ve taken a giant leap forward with the introduction of the Audi Q7 TDI clean diesel this year,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “But our commitment doesn’t stop with our products; we want to promote reduced emissions through support of organizations like The Nature Conservancy, and also to spread the word about the benefits of reduced emissions.”

Tesla Motors got a big boost as they were given a financial aid of sorts with the approval of a $465 million low interest loan, courtesy of the US government. This amount will be used by Tesla Motors in the production of affordable fuel-efficient electric vehicles.

One vehicle that is getting a boost from it all is the Tesla Model S. The Model S is all-electric family sedan that carries seven people and travels up to 300 miles per charge. The Model S has an anticipated base price of $49,900 after a $7,500 US federal tax credit. Tesla is aiming to start production by late 2011 at a state-of-the-art plant that will be employing about 1,000 workers.

“Tesla will use the ATVM loan precisely the way that Congress intended — as the capital needed to build sustainable transport,” said Tesla CEO and Product Architect Elon Musk. “We are honored that the US government selected Tesla to be among the first companies to participate in this progressive program.”

Avoid rapid starts and stops. This is not only safe, but it can save more than $1 per gallon, according to the U.S. EPA. While improving fuel economy by up to 33 percent.

These may seem like common and simple tips but practicing them is different. Be aware of your driving prowess. Being and eco-friendly driver can save more for you than it can for society.

If you are very much interested on the Cash for Clunkers Rebate Program, you may as well trade-in your car. If the prices are any indication, you stand to lose a whole lot more. Or if your car is not all that bad, just stick to it!The list of cars have been released but this early, the terms of the deal are not the ideal.

Surely, vehicles still operating satisfactory may be better off being sold by owners or even trading it in. Whichever course of action a car owner may choose, it certainly looks ideal if this Cash for Clunkers Rebate program is the final guidelines issued:

It will offer no more than $4,500 to new car buyers.

It will require the trade-in vehicle to be crushed (which means that owners will not collect any trade-in value.)

The need for more trees has been called on for some time now and it seems Toyota of South Florida has not forgotten that. In fact, they have announced that each car they sold for April will be equivalent to one tree to be donated to the America Forests to help address the lack of trees today.

For the record, Toyota of South Florida sold 310 cars meaning that they will be donating 310 trees to American Forests, the world leader in planting trees for environmental restoration. Now this eco-friendly initiative should be something that environmentalists will surely praise. We are all aware that trees have been dwindling in numbers due to illegal logging and chopping and hopefully this effort translates into something better for the environmental needs today.

Cars sold in April in honor of Earth Day included the Corolla, the Camry, the Yaris, the Matrix, the Solara, and the Scion XD which are all vehicles available at Toyota of South Florida that provide more than 30 highway miles per gallon.

Under the programs, Chevrolet is offering the Chevrolet Epica saloon under the scheme from only £10,495 on-the-road and the Chevrolet Captiva from only £13,495, subject to a customer’s vehicle qualifying for the discount. To qualify, it must have been registered before August 31st 1999, have a valid MoT certificate and been registered to the same person as the all-new car for at least 12 months prior to being traded in as scrap.

The need to inject some life into the car industry seems to be apparent and these car scrappage schemes which aims to do away with old cars that contribute to the growing issue of carbon emissions seems to be aiming to hit two birds with one stone. Small car concepts are coming out one after another and would you believe that a Britain went all through the trouble to build a small car whose engine is no different from the standard lawn mower? For Terry Watkins, the concept is a great one although expect more improvements to come along the way.

The chassis started out as a children’s toy car, and after Watkins bolted on working headlights and tail lights, windshield wipers, turn signals and a horn, he was allowed to tack on a license plate and make it fully street legal. Now, you might see him scooting around the streets of Staffordshire in this little crazy car at speeds of up to 40mph.

Crazy as the idea may seem, it is something that can possibly kick off. Cute but certainly something that may not be fitted for the roads along with the other hybrids and still existent modern day cars we see.

An Issue Brewing for Car Recycling

We all know that as far as car replacement parts are concerned, it is cheaper to get one from surplus shops. But if this new bill take effect, we may see the end of that and a lot of angry consumers who want to save on car maintenance and repairs.

The critical nature of this kind of broad legislation is twofold. First, American automobile repair businesses and consumers purchase these quality recycled vehicle components every day to keep their vehicles running. These businesses and consumers rely on parts from recycled vehicles because of their substantial savings in reduced repair costs and lower insurance premiums, savings from the purchase of a replacement vehicle, and also for the strong environmental benefits.

In fact, these two parts alone typically account for some 50% to 60% of a professional automotive recycler’s sales — overall automotive recycling is a $22 billion industry in the United States. Thus, Congress should understand the demand for such repair options, and consider the implications of restricting them.

The recovery, reuse, and resale of these quality recycled parts must remain readily available to the consumer who may not want or be able to financially retire their vehicle and will require access to parts from these vehicles for their future repairs.

This Car Runs on Chocolate Bio-Diesel

The search for alternative fuel options is still on and while many motorists are being shown algae based biofuels, hybrids, electric cars and even hydrogen powered cars, this car reportedly runs on chocolate bio-diesel. Now that is something new for motorists for transportation needs.

This story from TG Daily says researchers at the University of Warwick in the UK have now built a Formula 3 racing car capable of taking corners at 125 mph… running on biodiesel made from chocolate:

The car meets all Formula 3 racing standards except for its biodiesel engine, which is configured to run on fuel derived from waste chocolate and vegetable oil. Formula 3 cars currently cannot use biodiesel. The team hopes to enter it in some sort of race soon, though, said [project manager James] Meredith.

Components made from plants form the mainstay of the car’s make up, including a race specification steering wheel derived from carrots and other root vegetables, a flax fibre and soybean oil foam racing seat, a woven flax fibre bib and plant oil-based lubricants.

The biodiesel engine is configured to run on fuel derived from waste chocolate and vegetable oil. It also incorporates a radiator coated in a ground-breaking emission destroying catalyst.

This Car Runs on Chocolate Bio-Diesel

May has been christened eco-driving month, leading a call to drive wiser and reduce the carbon footprint. To mark the first EcoDriving month, the program is partnering with Indy Goes Green, sponsored by the racing team of Nelson Philippe. The program raises awareness about how to be an EcoDriver and aims to be the first-ever carbon neutral Indy team.

“The key to EcoDriving is that anyone can do it, in any vehicle, and best of all, it’s easy,” said Dave McCurdy, president and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. “Now, as the summer driving season gets underway, EcoDriving month is the ideal time for each of us to renew our green driving habits.”

During National EcoDriving Month, the Auto Alliance and its 11 global automakers are working to educate consumers about the benefits of EcoDriving through www.EcoDrivingUSA.com. Practicing EcoDriving produces the highest mileage from every single vehicle, regardless of size or age–potentially affecting the United States’ entire fleet of 245 million automobiles.

As a result, the possible benefits of the program are significant. Many fuel-saving EcoDriving practices are surprisingly simple, such as:

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that using cruise control for 10,000 of the miles driven in a year could save a driver nearly $200 and more than 60 gallons of fuel.
Observing the speed limit and not exceeding 60 mph, where legally allowed, can improve mileage by up to 23 percent.
Traffic lights are often synchronized so that a motorist driving at a specific speed will pass through a series of green lights without stopping. Driving at a steady speed can help drivers avoid red lights, therefore keeping their vehicles moving more efficiently.

Big Incentives Available On 2009 Zenn Neighborhood EV Car

Do you know what a neighborhood EV is? It’s a new breed of eco friendly low speed cars geared for urban commuters and for commercial fleets such as gated communities, airports, resorts, municipalities and college campuses. Since they’re classified as NEV’s, neighborhood electric vehicles, they are usually limited to only 35 MPH roads.

Essentially the car is for those who normally don’t need to travel far or long. The Zenn EV car is manufactured in Canada by the zero-emission ZMC, Zenn Motor Company and the car is all electric, not a hybrid.

The low speed neighborhood EV gets 30 to 35 miles per charge when fully charged. To fully recharge, it takes about 8 hours although ZMC mentions one gets about 80% driveability at about 4 hours of charging. You just plug it in to a standard 120 electrical outlet from your home.

Incentives Available Till June 2009

The MSRP on the Zenn NEV is $15,995, but through the end of June 2009 one can snatch one up for $9,995 due to two incentives. First is a rebate of $4,995 available to those who join the Zenn Ambassador program and second is a federal tax credit of $1,250.

If you’re in the market for an uncomplicated, all electric, zero-emission, good looking, low speed, all weather, fully equipped, two seat vehicle, give the Zenn NEV a test drive.
