Ontario Unveils Eco-friendly License Plates

The best way to pair of eco-friendly transportation is to have them sport eco-friendly license plates. Apparently Ontario will be doing this as they are set to introduce eco-friendly license plates for the said vehicles by next year. These new green license plates will be used for hybrid and electric cars and those not really on the road. The plate, which features a green border and lettering on a white background, with a trillium, is expected to be available as part of Ontario’s Electric Vehicle initiative, which begins July 1.

Honda and Toyota Unveils Eco-Friendly Concept Cars

As expected, among the vehicles that were anticipated to be showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show included new eco-friendly cars thriving on electric power. And two top names stood out, Honda and Toyota, as they unveiled their eco-friendly concept cars in the Honda Skydeck and the Toyota EVII. Both thrive on batteries and have been remodeled to maintain car balance, a prime factor in the efficient travel of a vehicle to date.

These new cars follow the footsteps of the previous electric cars launched by the two companies. Honda unveiled the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. Other car manufacturers are expected to follow as car demand has now slowly dipped its hand towards the electric car segment.

It seems that we may soon see ourselves sitting side by side with horses if this crazy concept ever becomes a reality. We know how “horsepower” is responsible for a vehicle’s power but taking it literally is really a bit going overboard.

A brainchild of Iranian Hadi Mirhejazi, this Naturmobil is powered by a single horse tethered to a treadmill inside, which charges the battery on an electric motor and allows it to reach speeds of up to 28mph.

Well the concept is there but the whole setup leaves a lot for improvement, particularly the accommodation section.

The One Horsepower Eco-Friendly Naturmobil

Amphibious Hybrid Boat and Land Vehicle

This vehicle is not taken from the pages of any modern sci-fi or James Bond movie. It is an amphibious boat that water lovers can use and perhaps take to the streets after use. Unlike most modern boats where you have to latch them on to a trailer after use, just change the wheels via a switch and you can let it drive on land just like any other vehicle.

Designers Janne Leppänen, Tuulia Miettinen, Roope Kolu, Tiemen Stelwagen, and Jaap Van Der Voort also created the Hybrid to be eco-friendly: Driving the wheels are battery-powered electric motors and the souls of lesser, weaker traditional paddle boats, which this vehicle must consume to stay alive.

2010 Nissan Leaf Hybrid Launched

Nissan unveils another potential hybrid car for consideration with the launch of the 2010 Nissan Leaf. The Nissan Leaf is a medium-sized hatchback that can accommodate five adults and go as far as 100 miles. The Leaf can be charged up to 80% in 30 minutes while standard home charging is estimated to be about eight hours to get a full charge.

The “LEAF” name is a significant statement about the car itself. Just as leaves purify the air in nature, so Nissan LEAF purifies mobility by taking emissions out of the driving experience. Pricing details will be announced closer to start of sales in late 2010; however, the company expects the car to be competitively priced in the range of a well-equipped C-segment vehicle.

Nissan LEAF is powered by laminated compact lithium-ion batteries, which generate power output of over 90kW, while its electric motor delivers 80kW/280Nm. This ensures a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that is in keeping with what consumers have come to expect from traditional, gasoline-powered automobiles.

Fedex Makes Use of New Hybrid Trucks

Fedex has tried its hand out in the area of hybrid trucks for its transport needs by making use of 92 new hybrid trucks which is expected to grow in numbers in the coming years. FedEx extends its leadership position with the largest fleet of hybrid delivery trucks in North America and continues to demonstrate the everyday viability of these vehicles.

The FedEx hybrid-electric fleet has logged more than four million miles of revenue service since being introduced in 2004, reducing fuel use by 150,000 gallons and carbon dioxide emissions by 1,521 metric tons, which is equivalent to removing 279 cars from the road annually.

Lean and then let your body do the movement. If you ask me, this is a great vehicle to be healthy and generate some old style power in ages. Rather than waste power, you create power just by leaning, exercising your body and likewise getting places.

When the driver pulls the handlebar toward himself or herself, an electro-hydraulic servo lifts the gravity center by acting on the piston that connects the swing arm. When pulling on the handlebar is lessened, the vehicle stabilizes due to the lowering of the COG.

It’s a crazy idea but with people looking for alternative vehicles to use, it certainly serves the purpose to this respect. Weird but practical and logical.

The Hybrid Public Bike concept uses a pretty simple dynamo in the wheel combined with some circuitry in the bike that generates a generous amount of power that’s then saved on the bike until it’s parked. Once the bike is returned to its rental spot, parked, hooked up, it provides power to the nearby hybrid bus system.

And that is exactly what the Green Interactive Hybrid System did, showcasing its wares at the 12th Annual Car Show in Lynden, WA. Originating from Canada, visitors of the said car show caught a glimpse of the celebrated Green Interactive Hybrid System (GIHS) which incidentally was well-received.

Volvo Hybrid Double Deck Buses Hit London

London transportation gets a thumbs up with the new Volvo double deck buses that have been officially unveiled. These new hybrid double-decker buses make their debut at the Alexandra Palace, signaling the start of eco-friendly transportation that are tasked to render service to Arriva London.

A total of six Volvo B5L Hybrid Double Deck buses have recently entered service on Route 141 in the UK’s capital city and representatives from Volvo Bus and Arriva London, together with other stakeholders gathered to formally mark another historic occasion at the Alexandra Palace.

The new Hybrid Double Deck buses offer savings both in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. Evidence from test tack development and in service field trials with Arriva London show significant savings in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (C02) emissions as well as reduction in Nitrous Oxides and particulates.

You’ve heard the phrase “It ain’t rocket science”? Well, actually it is. Ichiro Sugioka is the science officer at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center in California, and has a PhD in aeronautical engineering.

The Volvo ReCharge is his project.

This plug-in hybrid with a small internal combustion engine for backup goes beyond the current competition in economy and efficiency.

It can travel 60 miles on a three-hour charge, and from zero to 60 mph in about nine seconds. Carbon emissions are expected to be less than half that of any other hybrid out there now, and the cost to drive it should be eighty percent less than any fossil-fuel powered car. The ReCharge has an electric motor in each wheel – the ultimate four-wheel drive.

A lot of other innovations are in the works, and while it’s not quite a space ship, it sure looks like the future of travel on the ground. Zoom! Zoom!

Toyota Announces Mass Production of Plug-in Vehicles

It is evident that Toyota is going with the flow of car demands and apparently the clamor is geared more towards fuel efficient or hybrid plug-in cars. And if business directive is to be considered, that is exactly what the Japan-based manufacturer plans to do as they have announce a plan that will slowly disseminate the number of hybrids in the market, starting with the lease of 500 plug-in cars for the government and corporations while likewise stating that they will employ a mass production of the said vehicles by 2012.

To date, Toyota will aim to produce 20,000 to 30,000 unit by 2012, expecting the demand for these vehicles to balloon in the coming years. Toyota wants to price its plug-in hybrids at a comparable price to Mitsubishi Motors Corp’s all-electric car, which debuts this month to fleet customers in Japan at 4.59 million yen ($47,800) before government subsidies.

Toyota’s new Prius gasoline-electric hybrid costs less than half that, starting at 2.05 million yen in Japan. Toyota’s plug-ins will be able to run 20-30 km (12.4-18.6 miles) on battery power alone at full charge, the paper said.

Though some may look at it as a powerful vehicle that comes out the pages of futuristic made movies, they are seen as a suitable replacement from the gas chugging vehicles used for business and commercial use, that thought may be just over the horizon. The Scania Truck concept is something worth checking out and hopefully a machine we can all get to see soon.

It is designed to be eco-friendly and economical by using a diesel-electric hybrid engine. The innovative part comes on the wheel-hub design that sports indicative color-coded LEDs that point out speeding and other rules broken.

With the expected demand for electric cars expected to grow in the coming years, Mitsubishi is making sure that they are properly placed in the market, thus assuring motorists of a wider selection of electric vehicles that will be available in the market.

Among the highlights of the next cars on Mitsubishi’s agenda include:

a left-hand-drive i-MiEV by the 2010 fiscal year for the European market
an electric commercial vehicle in the 2010 fiscal year
a larger electric car

Mitsubishi Set to Unveil More Electric Cars

Land Speed Record for Hydrogen Powered Vehicles Broken!

Take note, there is a new record as far as speed for hydrogen-powered vehicles are concerned. More so if you are talking about breaking a record, the land speed record, to which he was able to successfully do so with the use of an emission free vehicle with a “Breathable Exhaust”.

The whole thing was documented by the Southern California Timing Association. James successfully accomplished the feat by going 199.7 mph while filming his show, “Jesse James is a Dead Man” on Spike TV over at the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed. The previous record was 185 mph, accomplished by a BMW H2R in Germany.

Jesse James is a custom bike and car builder, producer, publisher, television host and restaurateur. In 2000, James started his TV career with Discovery Channel’s “Motorcycle Mania,” and in 2002 produced and starred in the international television hit, “Monster Garage.” Before his TV gigs, James started West Coast Choppers by doing what he loved, building motorcycles in his mom’s garage. As an expert welder, James produces only 12-14 bikes a year, making a very long wait list for his coveted custom machines.

GM may be in a bind but that doesn’t mean their research and development team are letting up. In fact, it looks like the Chevy Volt is gearing up for its release, this time putting focus on technology and a feature that is bound to be the benchmark for its launch. The highlighted feature is of course their Electrical Propulsion System which makes it a unique vehicle among the rest of hybrid cars scheduled to be unveiled in the market.

Set to be released in 2011, GM is hot on the tails of quality control for the highly awaited Chevy Volt. The expected retail price is said to be around $39,000, quite pricey for this car that aims to provide renewable energy using advanced batteries. These Hybrid batteries are even more advanced in most electric cars we know today.

GM Volt was designed to move more than 75 percent of America’s daily commuters without a single drop of gas. This is an amazing revelation that a future electric automobile could meet most daily travel needs without foreign oil dependency. GM says that the United States is currently using 96 percent of dependent petroleum for cars and trucks and more than half of it is imported.

Chevy Volt will probably be the electric car which starts a new revolution, and the major players are General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and soon others will follow. The thought that someone could drive 15 miles to work, then 5 miles to the grocery store, then 5 miles to the post office, then 15 miles back to home on one single battery charge is remarkable.

Chevy Volt Highlights Electrical Propulsion System

PHEV Completes Testing Phase

The PHEV has successfully passed with flying colors through the various testing phases, paving the way for the possible release of this much awaited hybrid plug-in car.

It is apparent that the demand for electric cars is growing and taking a feverish pitch. The Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is touted to be among the much sought after cars once it officially hits the market.

Test result highlights:

The PHEV easily completed the scheduled 100 mile range test in simulated intra-city driving.
The vehicle consumed 0.70 gallons of gasoline during its test, which equates to 143 miles per gallon (143 mpg).
The vehicle also consumed about 75 cents worth of electricity that was used to charge the battery pack the previous night.
At the end of the run, the battery pack still contained approximately 35% of its original charge. This was further confirmed by several high speed laps around the track at the end of the test. One of the final laps clocked its speed within 4.5 seconds off the track record, which not only confirms its power but also its handling ability on the race track.
The most impressive statistic of this demonstration was the fact that the backup engine and generator were only a 1.6 kW unit. In fact, for those people who are not acquainted with electric power, this energy equates to the consumption of the average hand-held bathroom hair dryer. In effect, the backup generator can be visualized as equivalent to a bathroom hair dryer. This unique high-efficiency mini hybrid system is part of a patent pending complete package.

Mr. Joseph LaStella, President of Green Star, stated that a 5-page, in-depth article was published on June 4, 2009, by the Times Tribune in Kentucky, where the writer of the article illustrated her personal feelings about her test drive of the electric vehicle.

Delivering their 500th unit is a great way to reveal that the Tesla Roadster has achieved a milestone. Also, this comes in the light of the opening of their New York store, making the two developments timed perfectly!

The 500th customer is Martin Tuchman, chairman of The Tuchman Foundation who plans to charge his Roadster partly with solar energy thanks to photovoltaic panels he helped install throughout his hometown of Kingston, NJ.

“My Roadster drives like a dream — it’s amazing,” said Tuchman, a former automotive engineer and owner of a 1967 Mercedes 250 and a 1993 Jaguar convertible. Tuchman converted his 1937 Chris-Craft into an electric boat so he could take it on nearby Lake Carnegie, which prohibits gas-powered boats. He plans to use his Roadster as his primary commuter car.

This news comes in the midst of the planned opening of their New York Store. Tesla will also soon be opening stores in Chicago, London, Seattle, Miami, Washington, Monaco and Munich. Tesla will begin deliveries in Europe this summer.

Cleaning Up New York with Hybrid Sanitation Trucks

Clean is green and for New York, it all starts with the vehicles used in sweeping the streets of trash. Aside from the usual cleaning along the streets of New York, the Kenworth T370 is expected to lead by example in the call for eco-friendly transport solutions aimed at fending off the growing greenhouse gas and carbon emissions caused by public serving vehicles.

“We are pleased to introduce the Kenworth T370 as New York City’s first medium duty diesel-electric hybrid truck,” said Rocco DiRico, Deputy Commissioner of Support Services for the New York City Department of Sanitation. “We are committed to use fuel-efficient vehicles that will reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions and improve the air we breathe. The Kenworth hybrid will help reduce fuel consumption and emissions in New York City.”

Hopefully, this move will help encourage local folks to do the same as far as addressing the eco-friendly concerns the world has to contend with to date. The City’s Kenworth T370 hybrid is equipped with a stakebed body, PACCAR PX-6 engine rated at 240hp and 560 lb-ft of torque, and the Eaton diesel-electric hybrid power system.

The Kenworth hybrid’s assignment is to pick up and deliver supplies and parts for the Department of Sanitation’s various locations throughout the New York City metropolitan area.

Ford Motor will play a chief role in this new move where the promotion for the use of electric vehicles will go a notch higher to help spruce up the alternative mode of transportation today. Consumers are still looking at viable mobile needs and apparently Consumers Energy and Ford Motors lead the way in ensuring reliable and efficient transportation needs.

Consumers Energy and Ford Motor Co. have come together to submit a pilot project which will enhance promotions in the use of electric vehicles. Ford will be supplying the utilities with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles to use in their daily operations.

The utilities also will develop and install “smart” charging facilities for the vehicles. The data from the vehicle use and charging systems will be shared and used to help shape the power infrastructure needed to meet customer needs as the use of electric vehicles expands.

The craziest prices come from the craziest auctions and just when everyone thought it was a fluke, one person suddenly becomes the proud owner of a 2010 Honda Insight. The price? Would you believe only $1.24? That is practically chump change and not even enough for a tip!

This was all made possible by Rockybid.com. Rockybid.com is a new online auction website that makes prizes available to users for negligible prices. Although Rockybid expected the Insight to sell far below its ticket price, the remarkable final bid came as a complete shock.

The site auctions off other items at significant discounts as well, including brand new flat screen TVs, digital cameras, Nintendo Wiis, iPods, iPhones, cell phones, GPS systems, vacation packages, laptops, netbooks, PC computers and XBOX 360’s.

Shortly after the auction resumed on Wednesday, May 20th, user JANEMEGG of PA won the 2010 Honda Insight auction after an extremely short bidding war with only one other user. Rockybid is currently in discussions with venues and potential sponsors for the event that will take place within the next 30 days.

2010 Honda Insight Sold for $1.24?

It is fascinating to see what some concepts can do. It is likewise impressive what you can do once they are actually fiinished and perform as promised. That is perhaps what best sums up this brainchild of Richard Grzych, the person who conceptualized the solar flyer. The new bike is the Solar Flyer Motorbike which recharges while you are riding it. The bike can reportedly go as far as 50 miles at 90 mph.

Grzych also has plans to attach a trailer to the motorcycle, which would extend the bike’s range. Included in its haul would be four 12-volt deep cycle marine battery packs with a dozen additional solar film packs mounted to it. There would also be room for a plug-in charger, tools, chairs, cleaning supplies, cooler and anything else that might be needed for an all-day bike show.

Smallest Car Uses Lawnmower Power!

Small car concepts are coming out one after another and would you believe that a Britain went all through the trouble to build a small car whose engine is no different from the standard lawn mower? For Terry Watkins, the concept is a great one although expect more improvements to come along the way.

The chassis started out as a children’s toy car, and after Watkins bolted on working headlights and tail lights, windshield wipers, turn signals and a horn, he was allowed to tack on a license plate and make it fully street legal. Now, you might see him scooting around the streets of Staffordshire in this little crazy car at speeds of up to 40mph.

Crazy as the idea may seem, it is something that can possibly kick off. Cute but certainly something that may not be fitted for the roads along with the other hybrids and still existent modern day cars we see.

PHEV Passes First Phase

The PHEV has made a lot of people waiting at the edge of their seats and apparently, the future plug-in hybrid electric vehicle has passed the first stage with flying colors. Green Star Products, Inc. today announced that preliminary testing of its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been successfully completed at the Corbin Motor Speedway in Kentucky.

This was a preliminary test for the full demonstration event scheduled during the first week of June. However, this preliminary test did produce some impressive on-road efficiency data as follows:

The test run was designed to simulate an intra-city driving delivery truck route at the test track.
The run consisted of 400 laps for a total of 100 miles.
The test included eight 10-minute delivery stops and a short lunch break during the 100-mile run.
The test vehicle was driven by 3 drivers and included 2 track test drivers and Brooks Agnew, President of Global Green Cars.

Intra-city driving delivery vehicles are the highest polluters and least energy efficient vehicles in use today on a per mile basis. For example, 85% of the huge U.S. Post Office fleet travels less than 13 miles per day yet consumes 2 to 4 gallons of gasoline per day. This is equivalent to a mileage of 3 to 6 miles per gallon. Compare this to the 100 mile test run of the GSPI plug-in hybrid which demonstrated over 100 miles per gallon at its preliminary test run.

The 2010 Ford Fusion and the Fusion Hybrid have been getting much hype and the best way to find out if it is really eco-friendly is to actually get a chance to drive it. Realistically, not all people can have that chance but thanks to Ford, chosen people may have that opportunity especially if they are following American Idol, the finale!

The federal government has tax credits (or rebates) available on several hybrid car models.

But which? First let’s keep in mind how the credit works, which i explain below.

The government tax credits were created to help manufacturers recoup part of their investment in clean fuel vehicle production. The federal government wanted to make sure that the millions being spent on fuel efficient vehicles didn’t go to waste.

So what they did was create an incentive (a/k/a tax credit) for hybrid and diesel cars to help push them out of dealer lots – but after a certain number of vehicles were sold, (60,000 to be exact) it would phase out the credit over a period of time.

The program works like this, prior to 60,000 cars being sold the consumer gets the full credit available. After the 60,000 car allotment is reached – the credit phases out like this:

6 month – 1/2 the credit
6month – 25% the credit
3month – nothing (tax credit is no longer available – which is what happened to the Toyota Prius

Obama Junks Hydrogen Car Fund

In what U.S. President Barack Obama feels may have been a waste of money, the $1.2 Billion development fund for a fuel cell-powered car that was a brainchild of the previous Bush Administration has been junked.

The issue of fuel cells has been a contentious one, with many believing the technology is of dubious benefit when battery-electric cars offer a far simpler solution. The USA’s newly-minted President agrees, and last Thursday scrapped the fuel cell funding plan set up by former President George W. Bush in 2003.

Instead, President Obama plans to spend just US$68.2 million on fuel cell research – less than half the amount spent last year. With Bush’s US$1.2 billion plan in the bin, a further US$100 million will be saved each year. In contrast, the Bush administration spent a total of $500 million in automotive fuel cell research, with limited results and no prospect of wide-scale adoption of the technology in the near future.

Battery-electrics are the new darling of the Obama administration, with Energy Secretary Steven Chu saying the government wanted to target more “immediate energy-saving solutions”.

Here is a great electric bicycle that can bring you to the extra mile. The GoCycle inhibits an eco-friendly injection of sorts. While there has been some progress, there remains a whole lot more work to be done in the long run. One of the ways to do your part is choosing green forms of transport, and the GoCycle electric bicycle is a decent option if you do plenty of intra-city travel.

This is the world’s lightest production electric bicycle, tipping the scales at just 16.2kg. Despite its small size, it is able to move you for around 20 miles before requiring a recharge, and at a top speed of 15mph to boot. Recharge time currently stands at 3.5 hours, and the £1,158 price point will come with a sealed-for-life chain, a decent suspension system to prevent sore buttocks and three-speed gearing.

Balance Hybrid Vehicles for Toronto

Leading by example, the City of Toronto is going green after purchasing five Balance Hybrid Electric Trucks from Azure Dynamics Corporation. The five trucks will be put into service in three different city divisions including the Library; the Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division; and Solid Waste Management Services.

“Azure Dynamics has a steadfast dedication to promoting sustainable living and driving a world of difference,” said Scott Harrison, Azure Dynamics’ Chief Executive Officer. “By deploying five Balance Hybrid Electric trucks, the City of Toronto continues to support a collective effort to improve the green footprint throughout Canada where the citizens value and appreciate their incredible natural resources.”

The five trucks ordered by the City of Toronto will be used in some of the City’s busiest departments. One unit will be utilized by the Library where an inter-branch delivery system will operate six days a week making approximately 10 stops a day. The Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division will use one vehicle for the delivery of sports equipment and recreational materials to community centers throughout Toronto and another vehicle for the delivery of live plants for special events held in Toronto at various public functions. Finally, two units will be used by Solid Waste Management Services for residential curb side pickup of ‘white goods’ which include refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, etc. to be taken to a dedicated recycling facility.

The Honda Insight is smaller than the Prius, more agile than the Prius, and cheaper than the Prius. However the Prius still is the leader in MPG in the sedan class of vehicles. But what the Insight lacks in the MPG department, it makes up for in price and “driveability”. Setting aside comparisons for a minute, the Insight does deliver an impressive 40/43 mpg, which is still better than most cars on the road.

The Insight Hybrid is definitely a competitor to the Toyota Prius and makes for an interesting showdown in the exciting hybrid vehicle market.

We look forward to continued development from both Toyota and Honda.

Honda Insight 2010: The 411

Oncor Turns to Hybrid-Powered Bucket Trucks

Oncor goes green as they turn to hybrid powered trucks to help out their business. Oncor was one of 14 utilities included in the hybrid trial, the results of which were very positive. The trial proved that the hybrid-powered bucket trucks, which alternate between diesel fuel and battery power to operate, get up to 60 percent in fuel savings, of which one-third comes from driving with the rest of the savings occurring at the job site as the hybrid system works the bucket or aerial device of the truck.

The fuel savings Oncor receives from these hybrids help save the environment by using less fuel, a non-renewable resource.

On Friday, May 1, the trucks will hit the field, with one heading to work in Waco and the other to Fort Worth. Both are wrapped in Texas flag-inspired artwork, with “Hybrid Truck” and “Small Changes. Better Texas.” marked on both sides of each truck.

The growing number of electric car owners is swelling. The next issue that has to be addressed is where they will be able to recharge. Developed at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the controller automatically recharges electric vehicles during times of least cost to the consumer and lower demand for power. Widespread use of these devices could help advance a smart power grid.

Electric vehicles will ultimately reduce the nation’s dependency on oil. While the new vehicles will serve as an additional source of power demand, they also could contribute to an even “smarter” grid if equipped with controller technology.

Electric vehicles will become widely available starting in 2011. The current Administration supports a goal of one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. A previous PNNL study showed that America’s existing power grid could meet the needs of about 70 percent of all U.S. light-duty vehicles if battery charging was managed to avoid new peaks in electricity demand.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is a Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory where interdisciplinary teams advance science and technology and deliver solutions to America’s most intractable problems in energy, national security and the environment. PNNL employs 4,250 staff, has a $918 million annual budget, and has been managed by Ohio-based Battelle since the lab’s inception in 1965.

Public Get Glimpse of PHEV

The PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) will be tested publicly in the coming weeks. This demo will certainly draw a lot of interested bystanders curious about the concept of plug-in hybrid electric cars. The demonstration will take place in Corbin, Kentucky, where the vehicle will be test driven and evaluated by industry representatives.

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will be driven on a simulated city driving test route. The company expects to demonstrate that during an eight hour delivery day simulation this plug-in hybrid vehicle can exceed 150 miles while exhibiting an efficiency of over 75 mpg (miles per gallon).

Earlier this month, Green Star Products along with its International Consortium partner Global Green Cars had publicly tested its full electric vehicle version at tracks in Utah and Kentucky. Global Green Cars is a U.S. and International Consortium of automobile companies and associated supply companies which includes Green Star Products as an engineering and technology provider.

President Barack Obama’s New Energy For America program calls for deployment of 1 million plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2015, and on March 19, 2009, he announced programs directing $2.4 billion to electric vehicle development.

Piaggio MP3 Scooter Hybrid

Piaggio has announced that plans to unveil a new plug-in hybrid version of its three-wheel MP3 Scooter for the American market by 2010. The new MP3 plug-in hybrid will have a 125cc engine and a lithium battery pack, yielding something like 250cc performance. The size of the battery pack is yet to be determined.

The MP3 500, which is what the scooter will be called when it is released in Europe this summer, will cost between $9,000 and $10,000 when it arrives in the United States, probably around the first quarter of 2010.

There are currently three conventional Piaggio MP3 scooters in the American lineup. The technology and details of the MP3 500 are being kept under wraps for now.

Volvo Hybrid Bus to Plague Goteborg

Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of new hybrid buses moving around in Goteborg. The Göteborgs Spårvägar transit company is participating in a field test with the hybrid bus that provides major fuel savings as a result of electric drive and shutting off the diesel engine at bus stops.

Hybrid solutions for heavy vehicles have existed for many years, but they have been too expensive and reduced emissions too little, as a result of which they did not achieve market penetration. The Volvo Group’s new hybrid technology changes this. The company has developed a technology that is common for buses, trucks and construction equipment. In this manner, the Group secures large component volumes and subsequently lower costs.

Volvo’s hybrid technology contributes to a quieter and cleaner city environment. Fuel consumption, and consequently the emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, is reduced by up to 30% depending on where the bus is operating in traffic. The emission of nitrous oxides and particles declines by 40-50% compared with a conventional diesel bus.

In the near future, Volvo Buses will also start field tests with the first of six hybrid double-decker buses in London.

PowerPhase 125 Electric Propulsion System Powers Citroen C4 Hybrid Rally Car

Rally cars need a lot of power when it comes to competing. And while most of the racers turn to old fashioned engines that require the declining fuels that have become expensive, here is the future of world rally car racing courtesy of PowerPhase 125 Electric Propulsion Systems.

Subsequent testing in Faro, Portugal was the first at rally speeds and under rally conditions. The C4 Hybrid was developed using Citroen’s WRC championship contender as a base and adding a 990 cell lithium ion battery and a UQM Powerphase 125 electric propulsion system which drives the rear wheels.

“This system, developed by Citroen Racing, allows the driver to choose between four different modes of functionality,” explains Didier Clement, one of the race engineers behind the project. “In internal combustion mode, the C4 WRC Hybrid4 behaves exactly like one of the C4 WRC cars that compete on the World Rally Championship. In internal combustion mode, with energy recovery mode switched on, braking endurance is improved and the batteries get charged. On road sections and in the service park, electric mode with energy recovery means that there is less nuisance, increased range and less wear on the conventional engine. Finally, in boost mode – which employs both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor – gives an extra 300 Nm of torque when engaged.”

The two engines are linked to the same drivetrain. The driver can choose electric mode simply by switching on the ignition without starting the internal combustion engine. The gearbox paddles then gives the driver a choice of three settings: forward, backwards and neutral.

Ford gets the nod of the Kelly Blue Book as two of its vehicles have been included in the Top 10 Green Cars list. Today, editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com named the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid to its 2009 list of “Top 10 Green Cars.”

“This recognition says strong things about Ford as a hybrid manufacturer,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. “What we really like about both the Fusion and Escape Hybrids is that they do everything great hybrids should do – in terms of providing excellent fuel economy – but at the same time, they drive like conventional vehicles.”

Nerad says fuel economy was just one of the factors editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com took into consideration when selecting this year’s list of “Top 10 Green Cars.”

“We go beyond fuel economy and powertrain, and we look at things that people generally look at when buying any car, such as comfort, convenience, safety and value for the money,” he said.

Ford Hybrid Marketing Manager David Finnegan says winning two of the 10 spots on kbb.com’s “Top 10 Green Cars” list for 2009 demonstrates Ford’s versatility as a hybrid manufacturer.

“We are continuing to expand our portfolio to offer consumers a wider range of alternatives,” said Finnegan. “Not only do we have the most fuel-efficient SUV on the planet with the Ford Escape Hybrid but we also are committed to being a leader in the car segment. The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid provides 41 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway, making it North America’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan.”

GM Australia Reveals EcoLine Brand

Launching a new line for your own personal company is normal. However, when it is General Motors, a lot of questions are brought to the forefront. Like for one, how can they afford it? Remember that GM is in tough times and may be close to filing for bankruptcy despite the financial bailout plan that seems to have been a waste of money. Regardless, GM Australia has announced a new breed of cars that will fall under the EcoLine niche.

The EcoLine vehicles will highlight the companies use of alternative fuels, fuel saving technology, and hybrid and electric models. Initially, the EcoLine of vehicles will include diesels, liquified petroleum cars, and vehicles with active fuel management systems that can cut power to cylinders to save gas. In 2010, Holden will introduce an E85 vehicles into its lineup.

But the big news is that GM’s Holden group will introduce the extended range Chevy Volt electric vehicle in Australia in 2012. The Australian automotive market appears to be behind most of the world in terms of advanced engines and low emissions. The technologies introduced by the EcoLine such as E85, cylinder deactivation, advanced diesels, are all available in the U.S. and most have been for years.

Australia’s demand for fuel efficient vehicles may be behind the times, but a Chevy Volt will be a big step towards lower emissions and acceptance of hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.

New Plug-in Hybrid Cars Announced by Bright Automotive

Washington D.C. is the place to be. Bright Automotive just announced the launch of the “Idea”, a new plug-in hybrid car. The vehicle is expected to get 100 miles per gallon and was developed at Bright’s headquarters at the Flagship Enterprise Center.

“We founded the company based on doing the right thing for the transportation sector,” said Bright President and CEO John Waters. “We’ve leveraged some of our expertise of our team’s abilities, which is strongly experienced in advanced automotive technology, electrification of vehicles and sustainability.”

The Bright team hopes to find capital in the capitol city. The company will lobby to receive $55 million in government funding to produce 50,000 vehicles by the end of 2012. On Tuesday morning the company will hold a briefing before members of the House of Representatives, including Rep. Mike Pence, and perform a vehicle preview on the streets of Washington. Carol Browner, chief energy counselor to President Barack Obama, is expected to attend along with companies interested in fuel-efficient transportation. This includes Duke Energy and Frito-Lay North America.

Waters said the vehicle has undergone “stealth tests” on public streets but, for all practical purposes, Tuesday will mark the Idea’s world premiere.

Bright plans to create 550 new jobs through 2010 and more than 5,000 by 2013. That may sound ambitious for 15-month-old startup company, but Bright has the pedigree to pull it off.

Recording artist Sheryl Crow leads the list of celebrities turning to the new Mercedes Benz BlueTEC cars, preferring luxury rides to go along with their contribution to the green efforts.

Her Mercedes-Benz R320 BlueTEC is one of today’s modern diesel vehicles that are extremely quiet, environmentally clean, and can achieve a range of 500 miles on a single tank of diesel fuel. A benefit of driving a green car like a Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC beyond not sacrificing space or luxury is the IRS alternative-powertrain tax credit.

Owners of new clean diesel vehicles are eligible for the same tax credit as hybrids. The current Diesel Tax Credits for owners of a 2009 Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC are $1,800 for the GL320; $1,550 for the R320; and $900 for the ML320.

According to the EPA, the nation would save 1.4 million barrels of oil a day if just one third of all light-duty vehicles in the USA were state-of-the-art diesel vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC vehicles combine a smooth, quiet ride with fuel efficiency that delivers 20-30 percent higher fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine making it the GREEN choice for Sheryl Crow and several other celebrities including Kim Cattrall, Billy Baldwin, Kyle MacLachlan, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, and Nicole Richie and Joel Madden.

Ford is pulling out the stops as far as surviving the economic crisis is concerned and apparently, all fingers point towards an alternative mode of transportation in the form of hybrid cars. Centered on Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology, the hybrid system that led the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid to best-in- class 41 highway mpg and Ford’s aggressive electrification plan takes centerstage at the 2009 SAE World Congress this month. This year’s conference theme: “Racing to Green Mobility.”

Ford engineers, researchers and academia will present more than 70 papers during the conference. Ford also is offering up the expertise of Dr. Gerhard Schmidt, chief technical officer and vice president of Ford Research and Advanced Engineering; and Sherif Marakby, chief engineer, Ford Global Hybrid Engineering; for interactive discussions on powertrain technology solutions.

Ford’s Marakby will speak to trends in consumer hybrid purchase considerations during the “Making Green Cool While Staying in the Black” panel discussion on April 21. Ford’s innovative SmartGauge with EcoGuide digital instrument cluster will be illustrated as a perfect example of cool-factor hybrid technology.

“What we are discovering is that the notion of a hybrid and its outstanding fuel economy is what may draw the consumer to the showroom, but it’s the cool factor – the HMI displays, the next-generation navigation system, Ford SYNC functionality – that is a significant dynamic in the customer purchase decision,” said Marakby.

Ford Scheduled to Unveil Hybrid Cars

Maruti Hybrid Cars Available in 3 to 5 years

Don’t look now but Maruit is laying the ground work for potentially dipping their hands into the hybrid car market. Maruti has revealed that in 3 to 5 years time, they will be launching their own line of hybrid cars and compressed natural gas (CNG) variants for three or four models in the domestic market. The plan is part of the company’s broad strategy to develop small cars that run on alternative fuel technology.

“We are developing electric car technology for India. But it might take us up to the next five years or more to manufacture and sell electric cars in the domestic market,” said Maruti Suzuki Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi.

Maruti Suzuki Chairman R C Bhargava, added, “We are working on multi-fuel variants and some models have been identified for CNG. A CNG kit currently costs over Rs 40,000 and that is expensive. Also, these cars can only be launched in 2010 or 2011, when there is a pan-India CNG filling system from companies like Reliance.”

Bhargava pointed out that even Delhi lacked sufficient CNG filling systems for commercial vehicles. The company has already launched LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) variants of the Maruti 800 and Wagon R.

Indications are that there could be over four lakh bookings across the country. Sales of the booking forms, which began on April 1, extended to 30,000 locations across the country.

The booking amount for the base version, costing Rs 1.34 lakh (on road, Mumbai) is Rs 2,999 going up to Rs 3,499 and Rs 3,999 for the mid and top-end options with price tags of Rs 1.6 lakh and Rs 1.85 lakh.

The down-payment for the three versions is Rs 95,000, Rs 1.2 lakh and Rs 1.4 lakh respectively. The equated monthly instalments range from Rs 1,799 to Rs 2,975.

Possibly, one of the most attractive features of the Nano is that employees with an annual salary of Rs 75,000 are eligible for the booking process while this is Rs 1-lakh in the case of entrepreneurs.

The customer profile for the car is, therefore, expected to be quite diverse. Experts say that there will be a fair share of women who will be keen on graduating from gearless scooters to the safer confines of a car.
