Eco-friendly Trade-in Deals at Home Depot

Home Depot has announced a special deal for some home stuff such as power drills and old Christmas light where customers can trade-in their old ones for more eco-friendly items as part of their Eco Options Program. For example, busted power drills can be traded in for lithium-ion powered drills and old Christmas lights can be exchanged for $3 coupons on new LED holiday lights.

Home Depot is marketing the trade-ins as part of its Eco Options program, which markets tools and appliances, for example, that are more energy efficient. The company now sells more than $3 billion in Eco Options products annually.

Eco-friendly Trade-in Deals at Home Depot

Dell Reports 18% Decrease on Carbon Emissions

With most companies doing their share of employing an eco-friendly responsibility for operation, the latest company to report such an accomplishment is Dell Computers. According to Dell, they have cut their carbon emissions by 18% in its fiscal year. This includes a 12.4% drop in scope 1 emissions such as heating and the use of company vehicles and an 18.8% reduction in scope 2 emissions that covers mostly the on-site activities. The company also reduced scope 3 emissions, associated with employee air travel, by about 30.3 percent.

The company offsets its remaining carbon impact by purchasing credible, third-party-verified renewable energy credits. This investment helped the company become the only company in the computer industry to achieve operational carbon neutrality in August 2008, five months ahead of schedule.

By using mostly cold water, this system saves up to 50% of operational costs. Among the beneficiaries of this new technology include hotels, motels, spas, salons and so on. The news of car charging stations being put up in various parts of the world in preparation for the influx of electric cars is nothing new but when you hear one of the world’s largest fast food chains putting one up, then perhaps something is brewing.

Working with NovaCharge, McDonald’s restaurants in the southeastern U.S. will have ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations installed, allowing customers to drive in, hook up their car and go grab some food.

McDonald’s is expected to be among the frequent stops of most families for food so while they are eating, why not leave your car to be charged? It makes sense and similar to gassing up, you are making sure that your electric car is charged up and able to give you more miles after you are done eating your favorite Mcdonald’s meal.

We all know that Earth Day will be around next week and apparently, Wal-Mart is doing its part as far as celebrating Earth month and it can be seen from their stores worldwide.

As far as Wal-Mart India is concerned flip flops made of 100 per cent recyclable materials are available at all Easy Day stores in India . In China, the company is offering a mainstays compressed pillow resulting in savings in transportation costs and shelf space, Wal-Mart Puerto Rico launched fashionable and reusable shopping bags with artwork from the Ponce Art Museum and is donating proceeds from the sales of the bag to the museum.

In partnership with Unilever, Wal-Mart Argentina also launched a special Earth Month edition reusable shopping bag and Wal-Mart Canada announced its move to compaction in powdered laundry detergent. Besides, the company has partnered with local governments and NGOs and will engage its 2.2 million associates worldwide in promoting a cleaner, safer and healthier environment.

Kilojolts Consulting Group announces the launch of the Restaurant Manager’s Energy Tool Kit, designed to help operators cut their energy usage by up to 10 percent by addressing inefficient operations. It should come as no surprise to find that these days plastic drink bottles can be recycled into a fabric that is, in turn, made into clothing. Normally we would associate this material with fleeces, but the US division of Teijin Fibers Ltd of China are producing a line of men’s fashion suits.

The company has currently secured a working partnership with the retail group Sears to produce a range of private label suits using a material that is a blend of the recycled plastic bottle material and wool.

This range of suits will have a price range of $175 for the jacket and $75 for a pair of trousers. These suits are fully machine washable which is a huge saving in both time and money.

Superimposed on the sheet is a count down that is taking us to the 1^st April (April Fool’s Day) where the scheme will be revealed. Is it a car or a marketing ploy? The question of which is greener, going to the stores or shopping online used to be a very debatable questions with arguments for and against being very strong. But recently there has been a study and the results are stunning.

According to study carried out by researchers at the Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, it turns out that online shopping is greener than visiting the stores in person, in fact it is significantly environmentally friendly in some cases up to twenty four times greener than conventional shopping. This only works with single items, when it comes to food shopping we have to suppose that the debate is still open.

Green KFC-Taco Bell Branch Opened

One thing about going green, businesses are bent on bucking the odds to be more environmentally conscious of the things going on around them. And for Yummy Brands, it all starts with the unveiling of their KFC-Taco Bell Branch in Northampton Massachussets. It marks the 11-year-old company’s first attempt to seek green building certification for one of its eateries.

The restaurant is designed according to environmental goals that include cutting energy and water consumption by 30 percent and reducing CO2 emissions. Operations at the new site are also expected to reduce waste and the amount of rubbish sent to landfills; the restaurant composts and recycles other waste, grease and used cooking oil. The company is seeking certification for the restaurant based on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design standards.

Now bottled water offers something more, these products are now coming with added vitamins, minerals and other supplements. There are choices of flavoured water and some even come in bottles that are biodegradable or compostable. Bottled water is back on the menu.

Fast food restaurants are having a hard time in the UK over waste paper and packaging, in order for KFC to reduce their annual rubbish out by fourteen hundred tonnes, they are planning on changing their packing to a more eco friendly type.

Instead of the traditional cardboard boxes and clamshells, they will putting their food into paper bags and wrappers, reducing the amount of waste by 588 tonnes during the first year and make things even better all of this new packaging is produced from sustainable sources and is a hundred per cent recyclable and biodegradable.

This project has come to been known as Puma City, it uses twenty four shipping containers and can be fully taken apart and moved on to the next location. This unit is actually being displayed around the world. This is a very exciting project, which not only offers a great way of displaying the company’s goods, but it shows what can be done with containers.

If you imagine how many revolving doors there are in the world, then imagine what it would be like if they all generated power every time that somebody used one of them. This would indeed produce a huge amount of power.

This use of kinetic energy means that after the cost of installation has been met, each time that the door is used it produces a small amount of power, each door is estimated to generate around 4600 kilo watts per hour. Within the system the there are LED’s which change colour when the unit is generating power, very cool.

Revolving Door Generates Power

Tesco Add New Eco Shopping Bags

Earlier on in the year UK based superstore Tesco introduced a range of bags designed by Cath Kidston, these have become so successful that the range is being added to with some special seasonal designs.

Each bag has is made from recycled plastic bottles in fact it takes around nine 500 ml soft drink plastic bottles to make one bag. This is another great use for those bottles, which would have just ended up the landfill sites if schemes like this were not around.

The revenue from these bags will be going to the Marie Curie Cancer Care organisation, it is expected that this project will raise around £250,000 ($400,000).

Looking around the docks of the world there is one thing that stands out and that would be the amount of shipping containers that are left lying around. Now these are mostly forty foot long and six or seven feet wide, if fact that is an ideal room size.

The Greentainer Project takes these containers and makes them into something wonderful, by removing the sides to put in glass and by replacing the floor with synthetic grass. All of sudden this dark and cold thing has become something bright and cheerful. Roof top solar panels have been fitted to provide power for lighting etc.

It is great when we get to see celebrities visiting their local eco friendly stores; it gives us a sense of belonging to a wider community. In this case, it is the actress Amy Smart who was spotted with her family in a Chicago eco store Method.

Just in case the some people may feel that she just popped in there for a quick photo opportunity, it appears that she filled up a couple of reusable tote bags with plenty of goodies such as Go Naked wipes, Grapefruit all purpose cleaner and Smarty Dish dishwashing tablets.

Laptops Now Sold Via Eco-friendly Bags

Don’t be surprised if the next time you buy a laptop that it may come in an eco-friendly messenger bag and not the usual cardboard boxes we have been used to. Companies such as Hewlett Packard are now doing this practice of using eco-friendly packaging in selling their laptops, contributing towards green awareness as far as reducing their cardboard needs and offering better eco-friendly bags.

With this new way of packaging, do not be surprised if others follow HP’s lead as well.

HP claims that by using their method of packaging, they’ve reduced standard laptop packaging waste by 97%, eliminating most cardboard and styrofoam traditionally utilized. The bag itself is constructed of 100% recycled materials. This method of packaging also allows HP to ship four laptops per standard sized shipping box as opposed to three when using traditional laptop packaging. This might not sound like a lot, until you think of it this way: more efficient shipping means one out of four trucks hauling this product can be eliminated, saving emissions and fuel usage. The laptop comes with a voucher to recycle whatever laptop one’s new purchase is replacing, as well.

Eco-Friendly Meals May be Too Pricey

We are all aware that the key towards sustaining healthier lives is to properly select and prepare meals with organically grown fruits and veggies. One problem that hinders most shoppers is the fact that these naturally grown items come with a hefty price tag. Hence, you have to wonder how much it would cost if you add all these up. Can it be lower than $20?

This tends to be an obstacle for people looking to eat eco-friendly. Money and finances are likewise issues in the modern day living. But, if all this organic food is costing us a hefty dollar, how can we be able to eat the right food in order to live the right life? Perhaps a good thing to ponder next time you cook up a meal.

In the end, I was able to make a three-course “slow” meal for exactly $20. Of course, shopping at Safeway or another large grocery store would have come in a bit cheaper and might have allowed me to add some protein to the meal. But the difference, of course, is quality and availability. And at the end of the day, when the sun is shining and the food looks perfect, an afternoon at the farmers market sure beats the grocery store.

Eco-Friendly Meals May be Too Pricey

While their main specialty for food consumption is yogurt, it seems that if people want to go to extremes, they can also eat their utensils and trash bags over at Spoon Me, a new franchise that can be a great hangout and eco-friendly to society. Much of this is because these two things, trash bags and utensils, are made from corn derivatives.

Both Combe and Jaynes expressed ambition in expanding Spoon Me to become a national, maybe even a global, name. At the rate they’re going, it might not be too long before people everywhere are eating their silverware.

“We want to spoon everyone,” Jaynes said. “We’re gonna spoon the world.”

Taco del Mar Changes Packaging

In an effort to transform and limit its carbon footprint, Taco del Mar has taken the initiative to change its current line of food packaging and do its part for contributing towards eco-friendly awareness as far as business is concerned. To most consumers, it would not matter as long as they get their meals but sooner or later, most of us will appreciate the efforts of these companies such as Taco del Mar in doing away with the waste.

Among the things they aim to change are their waste bags, utensils, food lids and trays. This effort will go a long way and will certainly be good for business.

Taco del Mar, in a joint venture with Trellis Earth, may be the first big restaurant chain in the country to go green.

“We are going to be changing 16 pieces total in our packaging, everything from our trays to our lids to our garbage bags to our utensils will now be earth friendly,” said Erin Gilbert, Taco del Mar marketing director.

Amazon Doing More Harm than Just Waste

Packaging is perhaps one of the most controversial practices as far as doing business today is concerned. We have seen a lot of companies vying to make eco-friendly moves. One company, Amazon, is being chided for its manner of packaging in delivering goods to its customers.

“To make matters worse, the books Amazon sent were not the correct books,” the site says. “Many of these examples of excessive packaging occur because of issues with communication and packaging logistics. Ordering systems may process orders of multiple items individually and generate packaging as if the orders were going to multiple locations.”

Convenience Stores May Say Goodbye to 24/7

Convenience stores such as 7-11 may soon find themselves operating under normal business hours. 24 hour operations have recently been under scrutiny because of superfluous energy consumption. Being able to pick something up from the store at all hours has its advantage, but with these hard times upon us, is it worth the wasted energy to be able to pick up a breakfast sandwich at 3am?

Operations on an around the clock strategy may be effective for some businesses, but it deserves a second look.

Extending hours of service may be good to serve the market but perhaps one thing that 24 hour convenience stores should look at is customer volume. If you don’t get customers at the graveyard times, why should you keep the shop open?

Debate is currently ongoing about whether they should be allowed to stay open round-the-clock, with some municipalities, including Saitama Prefecture, Tokyo and Kyoto, considering asking for voluntary curbs to all-night operations.

“We are considering asking (store operators in the prefecture) to voluntarily refrain from staying open 24 hours, although this is not limited to convenience stores,” said Hiroshi Ando, a Saitama official.

With all the recent headline attention on toy recalls, many of the big toy stores are thinking wisely and loading their shelves with eco-friendly designed toys. Consumers are now trying to avoid the celebrated lead paint and globally dangerous toys of past, which has simultaneously flung the doors open for eco-friendly toy manufacturers such as ImagiPlay.

Kids love toys. Kids live for toys. They are attracted to playthings like a fly to a light, although it eventually boils down to the colors, the features, and the child’s age. However, take into account the fact that the holiday season is just around the corner. Parents are more likely to consider safety first rather than glaring, bright colors and impressive features.

Millions of toys were recalled in 2007 because of worries about lead and other hazards. This year, big toy sellers have embraced stricter safety standards.

Some have gone even further. Touting “good green fun,” Toys “R” Us in March announced a line of “eco-friendly” toys, such as dolls made with organic cotton and an unpainted, battery-free wooden fire engine.

“When you see green toys at a place like Toys ‘R’ Us, you know it’s mainstream,” said Wendy Smolen, editorial director for Toy Wishes magazine.

Eco-Friendly Square Milk Jugs Scrutinized

Packaging is normally the main focus of manufacturers and in the case of milk producers, going square was initially thought of adhering towards eco-friendly principles. Apparently not all people gave them the thumbs up for this.

While the new square shaped eco-friendly milk containers have allowed them to deliver them larger in numbers, it still remains that the end users may have some issues when they are at home. For most, it seems to be messy for the reason that it is hard to pour into a glass.

Others love it because it is a space saver since you can fit it better when you buy it and place it inside your refrigerators. But perhaps the issue of ease of use is something that they failed to consider. For sure revisions will be made by the milk companies after these feedbacks.

The new shape means you can fit more jugs the delivery truck, which is more eco-friendly, and saves fuel money. But some people say it’s awkward and tough to pour.

“At first I didn’t like the looks of it, I though, ‘oh well things are only changing,’ so I bought it and I used it right away and I thought, ‘gee I don’t like this,’” said Nancy Prelesnik. “I haven’t been back there to buy that milk…want my old, regular containers”.

Other consumers were keen on the new shape.

“I prefer this carton because I have a side by side refrigerator and it fits better in the door,” said Roxanne Rilo. “The regular milk cartons have a little bit more girth and they don’t fit as well in the door itself.”

Hitting the Green Spot Stores

If you are among the millions of people looking for an ideal store to find eco-friendly and organic goods then wait for a Green Spot Store to open near your area. Applying the same concept that 7-Eleven has offered throughout the years, this new convenience store is expected to make waves and help boost the eco-friendly awareness that going green people are looking for today.

Owners want customers to regard Green Spot, with its seating and free Wi-Fi access, as less convenience store and more cafe. “We want people to come in and hang out,” Mr. Garza said.

Co-owner Bruce Bagelman bought a Volkswagen with a diesel engine but found that hunting down a gas station that sells the fuel was tough. So he sought out Mr. Garza, who had owned several Smoothie Factory shops, and the two collaborated on creating the eco-friendly business that also sells biofuels.

McDonalds Australia Shifts to Eco-friendly Coffee

McDonalds McCafé, its own version of serving the large demanding population of coffee lovers will be serving coffee harvested through its local farms under acclaimed eco-friendly conditions. A lot of coffee growers have started adopting this eco-friendly practice of raising own crops under environmentally friendly conditions and apparently McDonalds will start on their local area before slowly distributing the same coffee beans towards its large market in the world.

Global fast food giant McDonald’s recently announced that starting May of next year its McCafe outlets will be selling coffee made from beans grown under environmentally-friendly conditions.

In an effort to join the fast-spreading environmental corporate campaigns, McDonald’s will be selling brews made from coffee that was put through thorough inspection by a non-profit conservation organization Rainforest Alliance. This mandate would require the import of about 500 tonnes of coffee from various areas of South America, including Brazil and Colombia.

This coffee will replace those currently being sold in all the 484 McCafes in the country.

The large number of boutiques and stores that have been opening one after another in most parts of the world is certainly a good sign for people who want to go eco-friendly. Unlike before, people do not really have an idea on where to buy eco-friendly goods although some existing stores insist that they are eco-friendly.

These boutiques offer a large range of consumer products from towels all the way to the eco-friendly made clothing that most people require today. While many are apprehensive on what these finishes may bring, it would be wise to check them out first before ultimately passing judgment on the level of green awareness that these eco-friendly boutiques have to offer.

Jessa Brinkmeyer said customers find that going green can be gorgeous in her eco-smart fashion boutique.

“When you walk in, you realize you don’t have to sacrifice anything in terms of style or fashion in order to be green,” she said. “People are pleasantly surprised and shocked about what is being done with these fabrics. It’s not boring and basic or uncomfortable and ugly – it’s beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. It’s like walking into any other boutique.”

Among the leading indicators that can really boost the popularity of most companies and manufacturers today is adding that green certification and awareness that everyone is going crazy about.

Let us face it. Even if there are no real green benefits in products, companies will always use it as a flagship to make a sale. Some may call it cheating but as long as it works then why not? But bear in mind, things have weird ways of getting back at you, especially if you are using a technique that is meant to cheat your customers.

Consumers are also wary of corporate motivations for trumpeting green policies and initiatives, with 35% saying they think companies sponsor green initiatives for marketing purposes. According to TNS, this skeptical group includes a high proportion of highly educated, Internet-savvy, high-income males on both coasts.

It was a year ago today, that Starbucks went naked, and created MyStarBucksIdea, a site where customers could go and tell SB how to improve. Uncensored and completely open to all suggestions, this site rocks. Are you willing to get naked, too?

Starbucks Did It, And You Can Too

The site has already propelled two major ideas to come to life, FREE Wi-Fi and FREE Coffee for Frequent Buyers, which are both set to take place in Spring 2008. I personally feel this idea is brilliant, and am really surprised more companies aren’t doing it. The feedback provided would be invaluable to you and the future growth of your enterprise.

How StarBucks Does It

The site created by Starbucks allows for registered users to voice their opinion, while others get to vote on said ideas. So the most popular ideas are the ones SB concentrates on. According to Lorna Li, who writes on green marketing, not surprisingly so, many of the ideas and issues that customers are adding to the SB site are green related.

How could your green business do something like this? What do you think your customers have to tell you?

Are you willing to get naked (as in, be completely vulnerable) and offer up an open forum where your customers could speak freely to you and voice ideas. Like Starbucks.

Yesterday was Buy Nothing day in the US and internationally it is “Buy Nothing Day” today, but with only a few weekends until Xmas has this been a success of failure?

To date I have heard nothing about it, and I can confirm that the stores here in the UK are pretty busy, as part of the war on consumerism but really at this time of the year is this really going to work?

Maybe a change of date may be a great idea!
