Brad Pitt Mulls Floating House Concept

The “Floating House” idea came from actor Brad Pitt during the post-Katrina New Orleans disaster. And now that the Philippines seems to be technically in the same boat, these floating houses may very well be suited. Pitt and his Make It Right (MIR) foundation are building these floating houses made from eco-friendly materials and it seems that to aid the Filipinos devastated by Typhoon Ondoy, this idea may just work.

The floating houses are built with hollow concrete cubes underneath for buoyancy, while electricity and water are pumped through flexible pipes. Each house costs about $310,000. Perhaps the only thing here right now is affordability. Many of the Filipino people practically lost everything. Do I hear the government stepping in? No personal (graft and corruption mindsets) interests please!

Qatar Airways Launches Natural Gas Commercial Jet

Qatar Airways has defied the odds and perhaps flown a jet like no other airline has yet dared. This is what sums up the new development that Qatar Airways has officially flown the first commercial jet that runs on natural gas. This alternative fuel discovery was able to power an Airbus A340-600 from London Gatwick that landed in the Qatari capital, Doha.

From the look of it, this may be a good sign for the aviation sector. Unless some kinks come out, you can bet that natural gas may yet be the answer to the fuel woes of the transport industry. Then again, this is just one flight and other issues like impact on the engines and the volume of use need to be observed and recorded further.

EcoUsable BPA-Free Water Bottles Launched

Dell Reports 18% Decrease on Carbon Emissions

With most companies doing their share of employing an eco-friendly responsibility for operation, the latest company to report such an accomplishment is Dell Computers. According to Dell, they have cut their carbon emissions by 18% in its fiscal year. This includes a 12.4% drop in scope 1 emissions such as heating and the use of company vehicles and an 18.8% reduction in scope 2 emissions that covers mostly the on-site activities. The company also reduced scope 3 emissions, associated with employee air travel, by about 30.3 percent.

The company offsets its remaining carbon impact by purchasing credible, third-party-verified renewable energy credits. This investment helped the company become the only company in the computer industry to achieve operational carbon neutrality in August 2008, five months ahead of schedule.

Hummer Is Not Green Enough for China

China has been trying hard to address environmental issues and while many would agree that they are still far off, you have to give them credit for putting their foot down. The unlucky group caught in this constraint is the Hummer, which many know is a huge gas guzzling vehicle.

While the Asian market is attractive and possibly receptive, the intervention of the Hummer entering China waters has become a fueled (pun!) contemporary issue. Unless Hummer can prove that this monstrous carbon offender offers something better and new, it won’t be appearing in the Chinese auto market any time soon.

The country’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is also concerned that Tengzhong lacks expertise in car production, the report said, but the company dismissed the story as speculative. Insiders at the company believe that negotiations with regulators are progressing well, that the Chinese government has not taken a view, and that it will assuage any environmental concerns by promising that future generations of Hummers will be significantly greener.

Hummer Is Not Green Enough for China

Nissan Getting Ready for Eco-friendly Car Demands

Due to a tax incentive revealed by the Japanese government for low-emission cars, there is an expected increase in demand for eco-friendly cars. And with that in mind, Nissan is taking the initiative, racking up their line of eco-friendly cars to appease the expected influx of people looking for eco-friendly vehicles available in the market.

Japan had lowered taxes on green vehicles last month which is foreseen to put an additional 310,000 vehicles in sales in the financial year to March 2010. Nissan for its part took the initiative for the impending demand, improving their engines with a big marketing push.

Nissan’s Shiga acknowledged that the lack of a hybrid car was a concern it often heard from dealers, but stressed that its extensive offering of fuel-efficient gasoline-engine cars would help lower emissions on the whole at the automaker.

Depending of course on the type of car you will be getting, you just have to do some pencil pushing. New cars don’t come cheap despite the price cuts and discount deals that car manufacturers are undertaking to survive.

“There are so many good deals out there on pre-registered nearly-new stock that actually it’s easier to find a car with a bigger discount under these pre-registered deals than it is under the scrappage scheme,” said Kieran Puffett, editor of Parker’s.

UK Car Scrappage Scheme Gets Going

May has been christened eco-driving month, leading a call to drive wiser and reduce the carbon footprint. To mark the first EcoDriving month, the program is partnering with Indy Goes Green, sponsored by the racing team of Nelson Philippe. The program raises awareness about how to be an EcoDriver and aims to be the first-ever carbon neutral Indy team.

“The key to EcoDriving is that anyone can do it, in any vehicle, and best of all, it’s easy,” said Dave McCurdy, president and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. “Now, as the summer driving season gets underway, EcoDriving month is the ideal time for each of us to renew our green driving habits.”

During National EcoDriving Month, the Auto Alliance and its 11 global automakers are working to educate consumers about the benefits of EcoDriving through www.EcoDrivingUSA.com. Practicing EcoDriving produces the highest mileage from every single vehicle, regardless of size or age–potentially affecting the United States’ entire fleet of 245 million automobiles.

As a result, the possible benefits of the program are significant. Many fuel-saving EcoDriving practices are surprisingly simple, such as:

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that using cruise control for 10,000 of the miles driven in a year could save a driver nearly $200 and more than 60 gallons of fuel.
Observing the speed limit and not exceeding 60 mph, where legally allowed, can improve mileage by up to 23 percent.
Traffic lights are often synchronized so that a motorist driving at a specific speed will pass through a series of green lights without stopping. Driving at a steady speed can help drivers avoid red lights, therefore keeping their vehicles moving more efficiently.

Philippine Tricycles to Run On Natural Gas

The Philippine government has approached Energtek to help transform its “tricycles” to run on natural gas. The move is expected to cover the areas of rising fuel prices and pollution problems in Metro Manila.

The conversion has been requested by the Department of Energy. The government agency informed the company of its intention to allow tricycles to use natural gas resources allocated to the Natural Gas Vehicle Program for Public Transport (NGVPPT). The NGVPPT, passed in 2002, is a nationwide program that “aims to enhance energy supply security in the transport sector through fuel diversification using indigenous natural gas and to use natural gas as a clean alternative fuel for transport.”

The NGVPPT program, which places a strong focus on the Metro Manila area, has natural gas resources apportioned from the Malampaya Gas Reserve in Batangas. The Malampaya Offshore Natural Gas Reserve is currently the Philippines’ largest indigenous energy source. For years, the reserve has been used primarily to generate power for the Metro Manila area. Now the government seeks to similarly utilize the reserve to supply the motor fuel energy needs of its largest city’s transportation sector.

Tricycles represent one of the most popular forms of transportation in the Philippines. These gasoline-powered tricycles are known to contribute to dangerous pollution levels. Converting the vehicles to Natural Gas provides a substantial reduction in hazardous emissions and is cost-effective. Natural Gas costs a fraction of the price of gasoline.

“A lot of patients may already have them,” said Dr. Nathanael Horne, of Asthma and Allergy PC and an assistant attending at St. Vincent’s Hospital, which are both located in New York City. “Many doctors already switched their patients over.”

The down side to the switch: The new inhalers cost more, $30 to $50 compared to as little as $5 or $10 for the disappearing generic CFC inhalers, Horne said.

“The handlebars are positioned on either side of the seat so you can lean back for a comfortable ride.”

With this new invention, pedal power has surely been given an added boost. Now we will not have to worry about making excuses since it is designed for people in all states or physical defects that they may have.

Taco del Mar Changes Packaging

In an effort to transform and limit its carbon footprint, Taco del Mar has taken the initiative to change its current line of food packaging and do its part for contributing towards eco-friendly awareness as far as business is concerned. To most consumers, it would not matter as long as they get their meals but sooner or later, most of us will appreciate the efforts of these companies such as Taco del Mar in doing away with the waste.

Among the things they aim to change are their waste bags, utensils, food lids and trays. This effort will go a long way and will certainly be good for business.

Taco del Mar, in a joint venture with Trellis Earth, may be the first big restaurant chain in the country to go green.

“We are going to be changing 16 pieces total in our packaging, everything from our trays to our lids to our garbage bags to our utensils will now be earth friendly,” said Erin Gilbert, Taco del Mar marketing director.

Fonterra Delivering Milk the Green Way

One thing about delivering goods to vital distribution areas is transporting them through rigs and trucks. We all know for a fact that the emissions that these large trucks let out contribute towards the growing concern of pollution and health concerns. For Fonterra, picking up milk from the farms can be seen as one of these harmful contributors but all that is about to change.

Fonterra is now trialling the use of eco-friendly tankers that is aimed at cutting emissions in the company’s 427 strong fleet which covers about 75 million km every year. This will not only help in decreasing the growing problem of pollution issues but also provide additional savings for the company as far as fuel needs is concerned.

Not a bad way to improve business and do that little part for greenhouse gas and carbon emission issues today.

Fonterra’s General Manager Milk Collection, Mike Foureur, says the trial of the DAF Euro 4 tanker with the latest Selected Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology would evaluate the performance and suitability of the trucks. They are expected to cut nitrous oxide (N20) emissions by 30% and particulates emissions by more than 80%. Fuel efficiency gains of up to 5% over Exhaust Gas Reticulation (EGR) technology will also be tested with the new-generation engines.

Mr Foureur said efficiency gains in Fonterra’s milk collection over the past two seasons, from the introduction of an automated scheduling system, Genesis, and other initiatives had enabled six tankers to be taken out of the fleet – even though peak-day milk volumes have continued to rise.

Soda water is apparently something familiar to us as a social drinking substance or something that can hit the spot in times of thirst. But you would be surprised at its other uses, mostly by being a solution towards cleaning certain items such as rugs, mugs or your usual room carpet.

We have seen a lot of common items in the world in the past and if you are looking for another item outside the known items for cleaning healthily like vinegar, try to use soda water this time around.

For stains on carpet or clothing, try pouring on a little soda water, then dab gently until the stain is gone. This works best when the stain is fresh. You can also add salt, if the stain is particularly stubborn

Use it to make an inexpensive, healthy fruit soda for children by mixing equal amounts of your favorite fruit juice with ice-cold soda.

Remove stains from coffee mugs with soda. Fill the cup with soda and let it sit for a while, then rub with any type of towel to remove stains.

The Fourth of July is just three days away and you can bet that most people are figuring out how to celebrate this annual event in the most eco-friendly way possible. For sure, fireworks will be the first in mind. But are there any eco-friendly fireworks within reach?

The answer here is coloring agents. We are all amazed at the fireworks display because of color and light. The usual harmful elements are potassium perchlorate which is a known element in pyrotechnics. So taking that out and using another compound in the form of strontium-based oxidants may help provide eco-friendly firework solutions that people will be looking for come this Friday during the regular Fourth of July celebration.

The C&EN article also warns us that coloring agents used during fireworks could be friendlier to the planet. “The other area in which pyrotechnics could improve from an environmental standpoint is their use of coloring agents. To achieve colored fireworks and flares, pyrotechnic makers employ metals or metal compounds that emit light in the visible spectrum. Red hues come from strontium, sodium glows yellow, barium burns green, and blues and greens come from copper. At one time, mercury and lead compounds were used as colorants, but they were phased out long ago. Ironically, the modern pyrotechnic components that could use some “greening” are the barium compounds that give fireworks and flares their green color.”

We all know that a lot of cities in the world today have a lot to learn and do to be able to cope up with the eco-friendly measures that are being required to combat global warming. But you will be surprised at how this city would come from a country that is known to be at the forefront of it all… Japan.

Japan has long been known as a vital contributor towards contraptions and gadgets that help combat global warming and apparently they have forgotten to implement these measures on their own turf. Call it an act of being tactless, this is simply a big blow considering that people of a leading country where most green technology originates is the one who does not even give a hoot about global warning.

Japan may be at the cutting edge of green technologies, but its capital has the least environmentally conscious residents of eight of the world’s richest cities, a poll showed.

More than four in 10 Tokyo residents — 41.6 percent — said they “don’t want to sacrifice a convenient lifestyle to prevent global warming,” according to the poll results published recently by Japanese advertising agency Hakuhodo.

Blue Star has taken that step in installing Variable Refrigerant Flow air conditioning systems to prevent Ozone layer issues as well as a part of their going green program as well.

The company is the first to manufacture such eco-friendly and energy-efficient systems indigenously, a press release issued here stated.

“The launch of these energy efficient VRF systems with an eco-friendly refrigerant to prevent ozone depletion is yet another initiative of the company in the area of going green,” the company’s Deputy Managing Director T Gouri Sankara Babu said in the release.

These street lights are a sort of double option, we have seen solar powered lights before but these can be very reluctant to charge up fully when there is not too much sun about, this could then cause problems when the limited amount of power that is stored runs out.

That why these ones in Japan have been built with solar power and a wind turbine, the solar panels charge up the batteries during the day, while the wind turbine tops up the power during the night, this way the street lighting is fully charged and working all of the time, good idea!

The UK government have given the thumbs up to proposed nuclear power plant building programme which is likely to mean that between six and ten plants built around the UK, which would generate between twenty and twenty five per cent of the UK’s power requirements

This multi billion dollar building project is expected to deliver the first completed power station by the year 2017, with the most of the other being completed by 2025. This timetable will fall in line with the decommissioning of the UK’ coal fired and older nuclear power plants.

With all these issues regarding greenhouse gases continuously piling up, alternative means of being able to assist people with regards to transportation and getting to the places they want, Eurostar has been given the task of making an environmental stand as the new eco-express for people today.

With its battle-cry of being carbon neutral and footprint free method of transport, Eurostar is expected to become a benchmark as far as finding alternative ways of transport today.

The impact of rail travel between London and Paris or Brussels had always been at least 10 times lighter than the equivalent journey by plane, a traveller generating 11 kilograms of carbon dioxide compared with 122 by his or her counterpart on the plane. It is, the company says, the difference between enough CO2 to fill a Mini and the amount needed to fill a double-decker bus.

But by making a raft of new changes across the business – from installing energy meters on all trains to tightening up on recycling and making “train capacity efficiencies” (filling every seat, in other words) – the operator is lightening its environmental load.

Gift cards are known to be produced from paper, a resource that has been known to contribute towards rising waste of materials which the world is now lacking. However, there is a new type of gift card that is manufactured through bioplastic, something that many believe is a contributory threat towards global warming.

While the intent is good, there are various issues surrounding the use of bioplastic, something that is deemed as adding to the carbon dioxide issues that the world has to deal with. But the manufacturers choose to say otherwise and such can be seen from this excerpt from the Buffalo News.

Bioplastics’ main benefit would be to reduce from 10 percent the share of U.S. petroleum consumption that goes into plastic. The types that are biodegradable also could help compensate for the country’s slow progress in recycling — only about 6 percent of plastic made in the U.S. was recycled in 2005, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Bioplastics also lack toxins like polyvinyl chloride that have raised health concerns and led California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign recent legislation banning chemicals called phthalates from toys and baby products.

“This is a promising new technology that faces some challenges,” said Mike Schade of the Center for Health, Environment & Justice, a nonprofit based in Falls Church, Va. “But we don’t view them as insurmountable, if the industry is willing to face them head-on.” Source: Biodegradable green plastics; Buffalo News

The powers that be at Delta Airlines, have come up with a carbon offsets program that passengers and fliers can take easy advantage of.

Basically when a customer books a flight at the airlines website Delta.com, one is offered the option of buying carbon offsets right at booking time. The price per roundtrip ticket is a modest $5.50 and this money goes to the environmental organization called Go Zero.

Delta is the first U.S. airline to offer carbon offsets to fliers.

BioJet Makes History as First 100% Biodiesel Flight

In Reno, NV the first flight powered by 100% biodiesel took place two weeks ago with the Bio Jet.

The Bio Jet is the creation of Green Flight International and although it has flown in the past with a mixture of jet fuel and biodiesel, last week was the first time, that it flew with only biodiesel. The plane is a L-29 military aircraft and this is what the founders of Green Flight International had to say in response to their concept:

“Out of concern for our global environment, Green Flight International was conceived by Douglas Rodante in April 2006 to serve as a platform for future development in the use of environmentally-friendly fuels in aviation and elsewhere. “It is imperative that the global community take immediate steps to reduce our carbon footprint, because we can no longer afford to wait while our environment continues to degrade.” said Rodante. “By implementing even a small amount of bio-degradable fuel in our transportation system we can significantly reduce the CO2 (greenhouse gasses) and NOx (the precursor to smog) that contribute to global warming.”

Wal-Mart Sets Green Standards for Suppliers

Dead-set in doing its part towards contributing towards the green mission, Wal-Mart has set forth standards towards its old and new suppliers by requiring them to submit measured carbon footprints and how they intend to improve such a situation if present.

There are a lot of suppliers who will certainly be hit by this, mostly suppliers who would fall in set categories that have been identified as being among the contributors towards a sagging standard of living today.

“Some of them are things we rarely think about — like our vacuum cleaners — and some of them are things we’d rather think about, like beer and movies,” John Fleming, Wal-Mart’s chief merchandising officer, said yesterday at a news conference in New York. “But each of these products has an impact on our planet.”

For most manufacturing companies, pollution is one thing that they are sure to encounter. Whether this be waste or air pollution, their social duties to keep these things at a minimum should always be observed.

Drug companies are known to be the running resort of most people for medicines and drugs that they offer as prescribed by physicians. Some may call it ironic, but the truth is, if you want to help upkeep lives, then it starts by leading by example and controlling their trash.
