Worried About Mother Earth? Go Meatless In May

One can’t truly be green and eat meat, the two just don’t go hand in hand. Meat (or the raising of animals for meat) is one of the most destructive practices ever invented.

Animal agriculture and specifically factory farming are
vicious on Mother Earth, not to mention the animals. But since around the 1950’s Americans have been programmed not only to LOVE meat, but to think they NEED it.

We can debate the NEED for meat till the cows come home,but one can’t deny the hell on Earth animal rearing is causing on our planet. One way to combat this eco nightmare and or reduce it, is by reducing or eliminating the consumption of meat.

You can start by reducing it. Phase meat out gradually, why not start with the awesome new initiative over at the Huffington Post site titled “Meatless in May”.

As it sounds, the idea is to not eat meat for one month. One month – can you do it? Sure you can.

Start by reading up on meatless options and yes you do have options, plenty actually. Meat doesn’t have to be the center of each and every entree – think OUTSIDE the box – and you will discover an oasis of delicious, healthy, and fun meal ideas. There’s a vast and impressive array of fruits and veggies available to you right now that when prepared right, and made into imaginative dishes – will excite and delight you. You just need to give it a good ‘ole fashioned try.

Cutting out or reducing meat is as easy as 1-2-3.

My Take on the Earth Hour

Come this March 28, the call has been made to join the fight against global warming by not using any electricity for an hour. While the call does seem common have you ever asked yourself, does it really help save the earth and make a difference or are we just saving ourselves an hour of kilowatt consumption?

The environmental situation has grown so bad that global warming seems to be endless. It has covered all areas like energy, pollution and dampened natural resources. While we all want to make the world a better place, the fact remains that it may take more than an hour to help heed the call for the fight against global warming.

The Earth Hour is really more of a mixture for a publicity stunt as well as perhaps start somewhere. But would it matter? The thing is it shouldn’t even be just an hour. An hour can make a difference but it will take more than that to stave off global warming.

But if they really want to make this Earth Hour work, I feel that it should all start from commercial establishments. Asking private home owners to cut off electricity for an hour is easy. But have you ever considered the fact that it is an opportunity for business for people who may be powered off at home yet are somewhere out there having dinner in business establishments?

Perhaps a broader announcement would be good. But simply saying that people should turn off the lights out on March 28 doesn’t really quite cut it.

My Take on the Earth Hour

Ellen DeGeneres plays ‘MOTHER NATURE’

An upcoming comedy has made talk show host Ellen DeGeneres to play the role of “Mother Nature”. Ellen DeGeneres stars as MOTHER NATURE, who makes her grand return to earth for the first time since the planet’s creation. Project is being written by Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Jenny Bicks.

Says DeGeneres: “I’m so excited to be playing Mother Nature. I’ve always wanted to control the weather. Nothing will stop me from doing this…neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet…I may be thinking of the postal service. But, I’m really excited about the movie.”

Walden is looking to fast track the project for an anticipated production period this summer in Los Angeles during the talk show host’s hiatus.

GreenFest Opens This Weekend in Chicago

I wrote about Washington DC GreenFest and the San Fransisco GreenFest a few months ago, and now it is time for the Chicago GreenFest. Green Fest hits Navy Pier in Chicago, this weekend, May 17 and 18.

With over 350 businesses and 150 speakers, this eco friendly minded festival shakes up Chi-Town. This is a rather large event, in 2007 there were over 31,000 attendees, and this year sets the stage for an even bigger event.

You can do all of the following (and more) at the 2008 Chicago GreenFest:

watch a demonstration
mingle with other eco conscious consumers
visit booths from local green busineeses
sample vegetarian and vegan fare
pick up green freebies
join contests
and so much more.

The Green Festival kicks off today till 8pm, and opens again tomorrow, May 18, from 11am till 6pm in Chicago’s Navy Pier.

The fashion designer Carlos Miele has launched a terrific campaign aimed at benefiting the rainforests, which simply has to be a good idea.

This tee shirt has been designed by Carlos Miele, but there are other designs from such celebrities as Scarlett Johansson, Camilla Belle, Michael Roberts, Diana Picasso, and Alice Braga, which is bound to add some interest in the project.

It has been stated that twenty per cent of each sale will go to the rain forest project which initially may not seem to be a great deal, but when you find out that some of these tees are being sold for anything up to and beyond $173 then it makes perfect sense.

Walt Disney Launches Disneynature

Chalk up one more promising project by leading film makers of Walt Disney as they are set to launch and eco-friendly series called Disneynature which promises to add more information towards the curious minds on what they have to do to help in saving the environment.

Spearheaded by Jean-Francois Camilleri, this new series of documentaries are set to be launched soon whose primary base will be in France.

“Disneynature is a concept we look forward to building across the company and across the globe for years to come, and we hope these films will contribute to a greater understanding and appreciation of the beauty and fragility of our natural world,” Disney prexy-CEO Robert Iger said.

Eco Friendly Monstrosity – Chair Made out of Plastic Bags!

You had to look, didn’t you? I warned you, as this is just ugly. Someone in the UK has decided to make a chair (more like a bean bag) out of plastic bags. Lots and lots of plastic bags. Read on below.

The premise is that instead of thrwoing out the plastic bags you get at grocery shops, you put them in this net, and once accumulated, you have yourself a chair, to sit in. From the looks of it, i would gather about a few hundred or so bags needed. The price for this eco friendly monstrosity is $150 bucks.

Out of the creative pool from the first ever Sony World Nature Photography Awards, comes this spectacular nature photo (one of 70,000 entries) submitted by U.K. based photojournalist David Maitland. Who is Eating Who? is the caption that David, gave the photo. Is the snake eating the frog, or vice versa? Hmmm.

Will this photo take the top prize, which is $25,000 dollars and the coveted title of “Photographer of the Year“. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held April 2008 in Cannes, France.

Are you participating in this years Buy Nothing Day? This day, which falls on November 24th, is meant to raise awareness of our consumer shopping and spending habits. It aims to remind us that we don’t need to buy things in order to have fun or feel complete.

There are many things to do on November 24th, Buy Nothing Day, instead of waiting in long and dreary lines shopping. Break free from the shackles of consumerism and give back in other ways. Like what? See below for a few fun ideas.

Visit friends and family, and play some wicked board games.
Plan a sinfully delicious meal with neighbors.
Volunteer at your local pantry.
Have a movie day! (from your own vast DVD collection)
Check out the events page at BND.
Create a protest at a nearby shop and speak your mind on unhealthy products or imported manufactured goods.
Catch up with old friends and invite them over.

As you can see there are many cool and fun activites that can be set-up besides a day at the mall being elbow to elbow with harried and wacked-out shoppers. Let me finish by stating that Buy Nothing Day, is not just about staying away from noisy and crowded shops, it is about being mindful of what all that hungry shopping embodies. You have to see this video, it shows parents asking their 2 year old daughter, Lily, to point out states and countries in a big world map, and she knows where all of them are. It is amazing. I dont know where half of these are. lol.
