New England Outdoor Center Announce New Green Accomodations

With all the ruckus of people going on vacations to make the most out of the remaining days of Summer, New England Outdoor Center (NEOC) reveals an array of package deal adventures for the globetrotting consumers to check out. Now you may be asking, what makes them green?

For every spot that we all visit, accommodations are important. And for their part, NEOC proudly offers the new Coveside Guesthouses which are reportedly LEED certified.

The stay and play package is $99 per person and features NEOC’s signature whitewater rafting, family float trip or three- hour moose/wildlife tour with two nights’ accommodation in a cabin tent, and one breakfast and one lunch.

If guests are interested in taking advantage of the new, LEED-certified Coveside Guesthouses, there is a package ($249 per person, based on 4-person occupancy) for two nights that includes whitewater rafting, a family float trip or moose/wildlife viewing tour.

The Big Green Bus: A Vehicle for Change

Come June 17th, a bunch of kids from Dartmouth will be embarking on a cross country road trip to preach green. This is actually the 5th Annual Cross-Country Road Trip where students try to educate various sectors about sustainability and green living on a big green bus.

But here have been improvements. The Big Green Bus has undergone major changes. For one, it will be running on waste vegetable oil. However the most glaring thing about it is that this bus has been transformed as a classroom on wheels which can more than accommodate the 40 educational stops across its route.

“This year, the Bus interior will resemble a ‘green’ living room. We hope to connect with homeowners by presenting environmental and economic issues facing our society today, and how individual action can help mitigate these problems,” according to Merritt Jenkins, a member of Dartmouth’s Class of 2010 and co-general manager of the Big Green Bus. “From New York to San Francisco, we will be traveling the country helping Americans make energy conscious choices.”

The attempts by the government and local councils to reduce pollution are simply not working because public transport is not up to the job either.

Fortunately, there are alternatives being brought out, like this new style bus from Optare. They have produced an electric vehicle that is totally green and produces zero emissions. The Solo EV could be the answer for public transport. But there are millions of buses on the UK’s roads and these buses take eight hours to charge up and then there is the cost to consider, so is this really an eco friendly alternative?

If the rumors are true, then it won’t be long before you can go down to the IKEA store and pick-up an eco friendly car. Obviously, this is going to be a concept car for the time being, but it is very interesting that a company such as IKEA would enter this marketplace.

Yet a new website http://www.roulez-leko.com/ shows the designer and car covered in a sheet. Superimposed on the sheet is a count down that is taking us to the 1^st April (April Fool’s Day) where the scheme will be revealed. Is it a car or a marketing ploy? Do you think the latter is the most likely?

His reward for all of the eco friendly work is an appearance in this Sunday’s episode of the hit animation The Simpsons. You just know the green issues are going to be mocked in a way that this show is so good at; apparently, Ed is the driver of an electric car! Any guesses as which electric car this is going to be?

Folding Bike Great For Eco Travel

Eco-friendly Toilets to be Available Soon

If you happen to be in Tiruchirapalli, don’t be surprised if you happen to come across some zero-discharge toilets in trains soon. The toilets jointly developed by IIT Kanpur, Research Designs and Standard Organisation, Lucknow and a private agency in Chennai, ensure that all liquid discharges are converted into “pure water” which can be used as re-cycled water to flush and clean toilets and sanitary fittings.

The solid waste is converted into odour free paste by certain bio-chemicals or additives applied at the departing terminal. This can be stored for 15 days in a tank and can easily be emptied at the destination point through ‘pressurized evacuation,’ V Carmelus, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Southern Railways said.

The odorless solid waste could yield revenue since the paste would be excellent manure after being dried in the sun. After some more trial runs and studies the scheme would be a permanent feature in Indian Railways, he said.

The Wine Cask Hotel

When you think about staying in a wine cask, you may think that it could be a little tight on space, but these are not your ordinary wine casks. These used to be filled to brim with 15,000 litres of Beaujolais, so they are large enough to make a small room out of.

Oddly enough, these wine casks have been moved from France to Holland where they form part of the De Vrouwe van Stavoren Hotel. Each room is large enough for two people and includes a bedroom, bathroom and sitting room. Rates vary at the hotel but it is not unheard of to get one of these rooms for around $20 per night.

Have you ever wondered what happens to all of those old suitcases? Well normally, you would have expected them to go into landfill of something similar, but one design group from Turkey, MayBeProduct have come up with this cool yet fascinating idea.

They have turned this old luggage into seating, they do look as if they are a sort of luxury version of luggage that incorporates a seat, but after a closer look it is clear that there would be no room for any luggage at all and it would be well over the luggage allowance too.

London To Get New Buses

When London got new major, we all expected to see some serious changes in the environment department, yet it seems that transport dominates the call for change along with the return of the old Route master double decker buses.

Therefore, a competition was set up and out of the seven hundred entries; two have been picked to go forward to the manufacturers where the final decision will be made. The toe designs are from Foster & Partners with Aston Martin and the other by Capoco. It looks as the famous Route master is coming back, but this time it will have zero emissions, solar panels, recycled materials, warm lighting and wooden floors.

The bikes have been tagged in order to see their movements around the city and to make sure that they are not stolen.

The city is going to be a real life laboratory for the SmartBiking project by MIT. The bikes are fitted with a small but lightweight lithium battery, which is charged up every time the brakes are used; this is known as regenerative braking which can be seen on some cars these days. This stored energy helps the rider get started again after they had come to a stop.

Copenhagen Gets Introduced To Smart Biking

When you think about it, a parking meter sits there at the side of the street connected to the mains electric system all day, every day. However, times are changing in the Big Apple and there is a network of parking meters, which are powered by the sun and not connected at all to the grid. It may not be one of the best eco friendly ideas after all who likes to pay to park, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

The IPS Group is rolling out these new meters and they are not even putting them on new posts, these meters are being mounted onto the old posts, which were originally built for the older meters. The solar powered meters also use wireless technology, which connects them to the network and allows for the use of credit cards.

NYC Has Eco Friendly Parking Meters

Webasto Unveils BlueCool for Cooler Trucking

Truck drivers will always have their share of dealing with the weather changes and driving a large truck under the prickly heat will always be a discomfort. Add to the fact that they have to deal with the toxins and fumes from their usually diesel run trucks and you may be imperiling their overall health as well. But that was yesterday.

Today, an old technology claimed to be renewed is being offered by Webasto, a trucking company that makes equipment. The piece of equipment is called the BlueCool which helps circulate cooler temperature from the unit all the way to the bunk area.

When the truck is stopped, the driver turns on an air handler that circulates coolant around the ice and blows cold air from the unit into the bunk area of the cab. The fan and circulation pump use only 3.5 to 10 amps from the truck’s battery — which means there’s no danger of draining the battery, Webasto says.

A technology company from Manchester has been awarded £130,000 ($260,000) from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) to design and build an eco friendly rocket engine. Astronauts will eventually use the engine, as a means of escape in future space rockets.

The idea is to develop eco friendly propellants as well as a hybrid engine that will not produce any harmful emissions.

Pam Anderson to Put Up Eco-Friendly Hotel in UAE

Guess who is the next celebrity making a pitch at eco-friendly investments. Controversial yet popular actress Pamela Anderson is putting up an eco-friendly hotel in Abu Dhabi after her recent trip for the Make a Wish Foundation Charity after being persuaded by the royal family to become a hotelier there.

Being the environmental conscious person that she is, this is Anderson’s part of giving back to the environment, putting an eco-friendly investment like other popular stars have done before her like Brad Pitt.

She reveals, “I’m building a hotel there. It’s environmentally friendly. I went there with the Make a Wish Foundation and met some great people there, and the royal family was really friendly.”
And the environmentally-conscious star insists the hotel is kind to the earth: “It’s built with no fossil fuel at all….in Abu Dhabi – where they have all that oil.”

Pam Anderson to Put Up Eco-Friendly Hotel in UAE

Ineos Plan to Turn Waste to Bioethanol

What do you do with excess garbage that landfills can no longer accommodate? For most, the immediate answer would be to recycle them. But for Ineos, turning waste into fuel is similar to turning trash to gold.

By 2011, this is what Ineos predicts to happen. They are planning to put up a large scale waste to energy facility which will ultimately produce bioethanol and help address the growing fuel problem the world is experiencing at the moment.

Ineos claims that its bioethanol, which can either be blended with petrol or replace it altogether, reduces greenhouse gases by 90% and avoids using food crops in the production process.

Mr Williams said: “The fact that we have been able to decouple second generation biofuel from food is a major breakthrough, and we expect our technology to provide cost competitive, sustainable, renewable fuels.

The difference in hotels is the types of guest that come and go at times. Staying in hotels is something elegant for most people, feeling that they can do as they wish regardless of what others may say.

But the story these days is quite different. Eco-friendly responsibilities are reminded as well. Hotels are doing their part to adhere towards the eco-friendly standards but as guests, do remember that we too have our roles to fulfill.

If you think about it, our efforts are not so hard to do. It may be a question of having to limit our spoiled attitude such as trying not to have housekeeping frequently change the sheets or the cups we use for drinking. Turning out the lights or other appliances using electricity is a good way as well to help not only the hotel to conserve but make sure we put proper energy consumption to good use.

Eco Hypocrisy at the G8 Summit

There has been much talk about what has been coming out of the G8 summit in Japan many of the leaders have been talking about how we need to save energy, food and cut back on just about everything else. Well this is fine we all need to think about our actions, but until everyone thinks about this then is there any point?

Take the G8 leaders themselves, it has been estimated that the carbon footprint for this years G8 summit is around eight thousand tons of Co2, this is over three times what was created in last years G8 summit in Germany!

We were also told to watch the amount of food that we buy and go on to waste, in the UK it has been estimated that the average family throws away around £6 ($12) worth of food every week. Yet, shortly after telling us this, the G8 leaders sat down to an eighteen course meal.

Eco Hypocrisy at the G8 Summit

Bio-Toilets Installed in Indian Railways

As part of their drive to become eco-friendly, Indian Railways has implemented the use of bio-toilets in their tracks. Unlike a normal toilet, in the bio-toilet only the water trickles down the track, while the sludge is retained in the tank.

They aim to implement this 100% in all their 9,000 trains by 2013, shifting from the biological toilets that waste water profusely. While there are detractors on the feasibility of this investment, the logic of the whole system flow of bio-toilet installation is indeed something to ponder on.

This toilet uses less than 5 litres of water per flush against uncontrolled use of water in open toilets. In a year, about a kg of waste will be collected in the tank, which will be cleared manually. Though it will save water, the bio-toilet comes at a price. For every coach, the railways will have to shell out Rs 8 lakh as equipment cost and Rs 1.5-2 lakh as operations cost per year.

With a recent price hike in gas prices, it might be a great idea for you to drop your kids to school on a cargo bike instead of your gas guzzlin’ SUV or van.

The popularity of the machines is likely to have been boosted by Richmond raising the cost of a parking permit for a large-engined “gas guzzler” to £150. It is also considering charging £75 for an annual permit to drop children off at school by car.

Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth, said he had bought his wife a cargo bike for Christmas: ‘We’ve been trying to cut down on car use and this is perfect for shopping and carrying heavier goods. We even take our youngest to chess matches.’

While it is apparent that these batteries can only go a couple of miles depending on the capacity charged on them, it is apparent that reliable lithium-ion batteries must be provided to give future hybrid car owners something to be happy about.

With the partnership of Sanyo and Volkswagen, not only are they providing alternatives but a safe solution to the people who doubt the ability of hybrid cars today. With their efforts, people are sure to have a different perspective on having rechargeable batteries for their chosen hybrid vehicle.

Sanyo and Volkswagen have worked together in the past in battery development. The Japanese company has also supplied nickel-metal hydride batteries to Ford Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co.

Automakers are stepping up their focus on lithium-ion batteries amid increasingly interest in fuel-efficient vehicles at a time of soaring petrol prices.

Lithium-ion batteries are smaller and lighter than the nickel-metal hydride batteries now used in hybrid and electric cars.

It would seem at first that the words plastic and eco should not really be made within the same sentence, but in this we are going to have to make an exception which will break all of the rules. As cycling becomes very popular in the cities a good bike is what’s needed.

But the designer of the Izzy City Bike, Omer Sagiv has made this bike to be good for the rifer too, by encouraging them to sit properly as well as being designed to look pleasing on the eye. It’s great for either riding in the city for travelling to work or for someone who lives in a rural area and needs a bike just too simple cycle down to the shop.

GreenFest Opens This Weekend in Chicago

I wrote about Washington DC GreenFest and the San Fransisco GreenFest a few months ago, and now it is time for the Chicago GreenFest. Green Fest hits Navy Pier in Chicago, this weekend, May 17 and 18.

With over 350 businesses and 150 speakers, this eco friendly minded festival shakes up Chi-Town. This is a rather large event, in 2007 there were over 31,000 attendees, and this year sets the stage for an even bigger event.

You can do all of the following (and more) at the 2008 Chicago GreenFest:

watch a demonstration
mingle with other eco conscious consumers
visit booths from local green busineeses
sample vegetarian and vegan fare
pick up green freebies
join contests
and so much more.

The Green Festival kicks off today till 8pm, and opens again tomorrow, May 18, from 11am till 6pm in Chicago’s Navy Pier.

Canada’s Eco-friendly Locomotives

Don’t look now but it seems Canada has added another eco-friendly feather in its cap with the testing of two environmentally friendly locomotives aimed at to provide eco-friendly delivery services around Ontario Canada.

Moving services are an obvious need in Canada these days and apparently they are one type of service that can easily be directed towards eco-friendliness spread around the world today.

“Moving goods long haul by rail is already much more fuel efficient and safer than other modes of transportation,” added McQuade. “We are always looking for innovations that reduce our environmental footprint and make rail an even cleaner mode of transportation.”

You know that one of the greenest types of transportation would be a skateboard that’s if they had not covered them all over with lacquers and paints.

But fortunately there are some skateboard makers who have actually thought about this problem and developed an eco friendly skateboard that is made from seventy per cent natural fibres and thirty per cent post production recycled polypropylene. These are finished off with vegetable based adhesives to make this a totally green machine.

The Arrival of Eco-Friendly Buses

Most of us use the public means of transport. This can be either through the subway or buses. Of the two, buses have been criticized for their contribution towards greenhouse gases and pollution. But while many bus operators are trying to remedy this situation, the development of a small fleet of eco-friendly buses are reportedly in the works.

The first batch of eco-friendly buses will be released in Marin Transit District routes after the approval of the purchase of 35-seat hybrid buses. Once they operate, expect an improvement as far as public transport is concerned.

A small fleet of environment-friendly buses will soon be rolling on Marin Transit District routes, after the district board Monday approved plans to purchase seven, 35-seat hybrid buses for $4.3 million.

How about this for getting around from the airport to the hotel, in which case there is not much point in staying at the hotel, they could just hold their meeting riding around the airport and get back on their planes home.

This bike comes from Holland where they do use a lot of bikes and this way they would only need to use this one and take six off the road, so that would make the cycle tracks much easier to use, you would have thought. They are also the eco friendly equivalent of the limo.

Man develops solar car

A man in India has created a car that is powered by the sun, not a new concept but for a one man organisation in India with little resources, it is really great.

The car that he has created is called the Kanso, it is a two seater car, which is powered by the solar panels and by a 100 cc engine, which will generate around 320 watts or power and can reach speeds of up to 40 kph. There has bee some interest in this car from the States, especially as it is supposed to have a price tag of around $3,750!

There has not been a proper airship flying around the skies since the days of the zeppelin machines. But these new airships are designed to be eco friendly and would probably compete directly with the cruise ships, rather than airlines.

But these new design airships will be considerably much better than the earlier models. It is said to be able to fly around the world in three days and have around sixty rooms for paying guests, the design may begin to be produced at sometime within the next couple years.

With its battle-cry of being carbon neutral and footprint free method of transport, Eurostar is expected to become a benchmark as far as finding alternative ways of transport today.

The impact of rail travel between London and Paris or Brussels had always been at least 10 times lighter than the equivalent journey by plane, a traveller generating 11 kilograms of carbon dioxide compared with 122 by his or her counterpart on the plane. It is, the company says, the difference between enough CO2 to fill a Mini and the amount needed to fill a double-decker bus.

But by making a raft of new changes across the business – from installing energy meters on all trains to tightening up on recycling and making “train capacity efficiencies” (filling every seat, in other words) – the operator is lightening its environmental load.

Looking for a family friendly and eco friendly trip idea? You might want to consider the Eco Zone. This interactive museum and live exhibit is all about the ecology and wildlife of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Founded by Jeff Corwin who is host of the “Jeff Corwin Experience” on Animal Planet, and a native of MA, the Eco Zone would make a great domestic family trip and if you already live in MA, it is right in your backyard.

“Stop by the EcoZone to meet some of our most popular residents: an albino black rat snake, garter snake, eastern box turtle, spotted salamanders, wood frog and grey tree frogs. All local species, they’ve taken up residence in the Creature Corner, a display of live local reptiles and amphibians in smaller separate environments.

Other exhibits include the Vernal Pool exhibit, which is a cutaway diorama of a springtime vernal pool that magically transforms (with the push of a button) into the autumn version where the pool dries up and the animals change. The Night Time exhibit is a misty evening scene with twinkling starlights, and an animated video about nocturnal animals, “While You Sleep, We Fly and Creep”. It’s a wonderful introduction to our barred owl, Hedwig, who resides out behind the building. There are also three Woodland Trees: White Pine, Tupelo, and Silver Beech, with special surprises inside the tree knots, including growth rings, a squirrel’s nest and other little animals who make trees their home”.

Are Automakers to Blame for Global Warming?

From a standpoint, car manufacturers may indeed be put in the spot towards key contributors to the ever-growing issue of global warming. While there have been various cases filed against them, lack of sufficient evidence may just twist and turn the tables as quickly as they were concluded.

In fairness, automakers have taken heed of the call to be more green-friendly but this does not happen overnight. It takes time to happen. While a lot of the released vehicles undergo the green standards examination, it cannot be denied that prior released models are perhaps out there and still possess an obvious threat toward global warming.

“One of the principles of tort law is that damages should not be speculative,” Brown said, wondering aloud whether Lockyer could prove “causation” between the automakers’ products and shrinkage in the Sierra snow pack, which was one of Lockyer’s claims.

Once he was elected, however, Brown did the sort of political pirouette for which he was justly famous as governor three decades ago, declaring that the suit was “a solid case and we’re going to pursue it vigorously . . . to prevent the catastrophic consequences of this global warming problem.”

“With the current public, state and congressional focus on global warming and possible solutions,” Brown continued, “this is the right time for the state and the automakers to find cooperative approaches and resolve litigation in a constructive manner.”

How about a green skateboard?

Bentley to make more eco friendly cars

It’s hard to imagine an eco friendly Bentley, but this is what the exclusive car company is saying. They plan to make their cars to fall within the new European Union rules on manufacturing.

The Bentley Coupe Continental GT use about 17 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, and some 396 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. But the car company are planning to cut this down to 120 by the year 2012.

Yet although the company’s products cost around $250,000 they have seen a rise of almost 18 per cent during the first six months of the year.

Bentley to make more eco friendly cars

Solar powered planes record

A lightweight solar powered plane built by UK firm Qinetiq has beaten the world record for an unmanned flight. The Zephyr stayed in the air for 54 hours, which means that this solar powered plane actually stayed in the air through two nights.

This is a great achievement for the company, but there was just one slight problem with the record flight, the people that maintain the world records failed to show because they say that they were given the wrong date or time. And therefore the record did not stand.
