The Big Green Bus: A Vehicle for Change

Come June 17th, a bunch of kids from Dartmouth will be embarking on a cross country road trip to preach green. This is actually the 5th Annual Cross-Country Road Trip where students try to educate various sectors about sustainability and green living on a big green bus.

But here have been improvements. The Big Green Bus has undergone major changes. For one, it will be running on waste vegetable oil. However the most glaring thing about it is that this bus has been transformed as a classroom on wheels which can more than accommodate the 40 educational stops across its route.

“This year, the Bus interior will resemble a ‘green’ living room. We hope to connect with homeowners by presenting environmental and economic issues facing our society today, and how individual action can help mitigate these problems,” according to Merritt Jenkins, a member of Dartmouth’s Class of 2010 and co-general manager of the Big Green Bus. “From New York to San Francisco, we will be traveling the country helping Americans make energy conscious choices.”

Recording artist Sheryl Crow leads the list of celebrities turning to the new Mercedes Benz BlueTEC cars, preferring luxury rides to go along with their contribution to the green efforts.

Her Mercedes-Benz R320 BlueTEC is one of today’s modern diesel vehicles that are extremely quiet, environmentally clean, and can achieve a range of 500 miles on a single tank of diesel fuel. A benefit of driving a green car like a Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC beyond not sacrificing space or luxury is the IRS alternative-powertrain tax credit.

Owners of new clean diesel vehicles are eligible for the same tax credit as hybrids. The current Diesel Tax Credits for owners of a 2009 Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC are $1,800 for the GL320; $1,550 for the R320; and $900 for the ML320.

According to the EPA, the nation would save 1.4 million barrels of oil a day if just one third of all light-duty vehicles in the USA were state-of-the-art diesel vehicles. Air Forces Make Use of EcoPower Engine Wash System

The military and air force are surprisingly doing their share of following an eco-friendly route. To clean their aircrafts, an EcoPower Engine Wash System is something that aids them in doing so. EcoPower builders claim washing the engines will reduce engine fuel burn by as much as 1.2 percent.

“C-17 (Globemaster III) engines washed using the EcoPower Engine Wash System have shown measurable improvements in fuel efficiency and cooler operating temperatures,” said Master Sgt. Richard Fults, the AMC C-17 propulsion superintendent. “The cooler exhaust gas temperatures also decrease heat stress on these engines, which benefits us in two ways. First, we see the engines are staying on the wing longer, and second, we are seeing gains in terms of preventive maintenance.”

EcoPower wash contractors also claim that by using their system, as much as three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel saved will be eliminated from the atmosphere.

At first, this article really had me thinking. How do you recycle a pet? The first thing that came into mind was the movie 6th Day where we saw pets being cloned.

Alas it was something different. Rather it was meant to point as providing homes for impounded dogs, much of them caught wandering astray. Kids want to have their own pets to nurture so if you want to get one and also provide a new home for these animals, visit a pet shelter and you can perhaps “recycle a pet” in a manner of speaking.

We are familiar with the inhalers that people pull out once their asthma strikes. It normally helps them as far as respiratory issues are concerned and today, we see a lot of these inhalers in the market, normally available at drug stores.

Now asthmatic people may be in for a surprise as there are reported revisions to the traditional asthma inhalers. In fact, starting 2009, they are said to be changing the chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs that harm the earth’s ozone layers. They shall be replaced by more eco-friendly chemical HFA, or hydrofluoroalkane.

“A lot of patients may already have them,” said Dr. Nathanael Horne, of Asthma and Allergy PC and an assistant attending at St. Vincent’s Hospital, which are both located in New York City. “Many doctors already switched their patients over.”

The down side to the switch: The new inhalers cost more, $30 to $50 compared to as little as $5 or $10 for the disappearing generic CFC inhalers, Horne said.

It is quite surprising how a child’s imagination can turn out to be something useful for the needy. That is the case of this 9th grader, Max Wallack, who seems to have a knack of inventing things that come into mind that turn out to be very useful.

His latest idea, satisfying the issue of environmentally concerns while providing some assistance in the form of portable shelter for the homeless was something quite glaring that it is satisfying both issues with one idealistic solution. And it all came from the ideas of a 9 year old!

When Max was in Chicago to accept his prize for inventing the booster step, it bothered him to see homeless people living on the streets. In the years since, he never forgot about that, and it inspired him to create his latest invention: a shelter for the homeless made from discarded materials.

“I kept that image in the back of my mind, thinking I had to do something,” Max says. “I thought I could use some Styrofoam [and plastic] bags, and put them in a dome shape.”

Understanding Eco-Dry Cleaning

Putting Dead Leaves to Use

Most of us who have trees are bound to encounter the problem of falling dried leaves after some time. While some would rake them up to a side, how to get rid of them is really a pain. Normally, burning them would be the traditional old use but that has been banned for harmful results.

People bag them and put them beside garbage cans for pick up each time the garbage man collects. However, this has been banned as well.

So what can you do with these dreaded dried leaves? Here are some ideas

1. Plant Winter Covers. Rather than worry or leave them to cover useless things, you may want to consider using them as plant covers to protect flowerbeds. Just make sure that they fit and are not oversized from large leafed trees.
2. Use them as leaf mold. Pile them in an out-of-the-way corner or in a bin made of wood snow fencing or hog wire, and dampen them if necessary. Over a few seasons, they will decompose into a substance the color and texture of crumbled brownies.

GreenWash Balls In Place of Detergents

I have made posts since early this year of laundry balls, but most of them were aimed at helping the drying process. This time around, the actual washing process that makes use of a lot of detergents to make the clothes cleaner is in the limelight and one solution in lieu of having to constantly buy detergents is the GreenWash Balls. No it does not contain some cleaning agent to wash our clothes better but rather makes use of “antibacterial ceramics” that emit OH- ions, or hydroxides, and O2- ions, or dioxides.

The OH- ions have “strong sterilization capability” and the O2- ions have the “capability of decomposing organizing matters and deodorizing scents by being attached to oxidation reacting intermediates.” Both ions “destroy cell membranes of bacteria.”

If this practice which was done over at RIT is any symbolization to most people today, we may just see a lot of food serving units following their lead; getting rid of the traditional plastic food trays. The concept can be somewhat likened to a packed and ready to grab food plate where you don’t have to worry about long lines and carrying those large plastic trays. You just line up, get one and then get a move on.

Aside from that, the need to clean and stock them after use can be eliminated. The need to also replace damaged ones has been eliminated. Instead, using these sugarcane-based take-home containers is the better option, pointing people to the better option of eco-friendliness and green as well.

Offering this eco-friendly biodegradable packaging does come at a price. At $0.28 cents apiece, they are four times as expensive as the previous containers.

The existence of companies such as American Retroworks is something that can make any job seeker and environmentalist proud. Located in Fronteras, Mexico, not only are they continuously trying to help rid the environment of excessive waste and putting them into good use, they are also opening their doors for more job opportunities for people who are on the threshold of a recession disaster.

Hitting two birds with one stone, the strategy of American Retroworks seems entirely enticing and make people heave a sigh of relief. Putting people to work for the environment has been a common vision and apparently American Retroworks has just joined the ranks of groups aimed at improving our environmental outlook.

The project is a partnership between American Retroworks, a women’s cooperative in Fronteras, the Valenzuela family and the Cochise County Learning Advisory Council.

We are all being told to control and minimize our carbon footprints. We all know it has something to do with being eco-friendly and the global warming issue. But as far as understanding how it develops or how it can be emitted is another topic. In fact, you may even go to the extent of considering, how can I measure my carbon footprint?

The PAS 2050 has been known to help aid in identifying such carbon footprint issues. However, some have aired concerned with regards to its consistency and updates especially in the area of agriculture. But never fear, they are in the works. It is best to see what would cover all aspects of business in all sectors we thrive and depend on.

Accredited assessment under PAS 2050 of the GHG footprint of individual food products is unlikely until early 2010. Temple added: “We need to continue to work with the developers of the PAS to provide a credible, rigorous and practical way to measure GHG’s associated with agricultural products. They have so far been overtaken by Clorox’s Green Works but with their new scheme, they are aiming once again for the top.

So before you count them out, take a second look. They are certainly going to be a better eco-friendly product the second time around.

Seventh Generation has taken a backseat to Clorox’s Green Works as the top seller of eco-friendly cleaning products. Fighting back, the 20-year-old category pioneer is revamping its look while readying a new ad campaign.

Baxis, pedal-powered “pedicabs”, are operating during summer from the railway station to the Basin Reserve and all streets in between.

The low-slung, eco-friendly machines, resembling a modern version of a New Delhi rickshaw, were introduced last week.

But today, it all depends on how you also educate your child. Avoiding the dangerous streets may be a good contribution towards providing an alternative on transportation issues and rising cost of fuel. Besides, it has been proven that a child may encounter a 40% greater risk of incurring a vehicular accident compared to walking on the side.

This is certainly debatable but considering how many cars we see in the streets together with the reckless drivers out there, there is a chance that this statistic is indeed a fact.

a child faces a 40 times greater risk of being killed in a car accident while being driven to school by a parent than of being molested while walking, bicycling or taking a bus to school. Factor in the pollution you’re generating, the physical activity you’re thwarting, and the money you’re spending (money that might otherwise go to your kid’s college fund), and you might argue that chauffeuring your children to and from school is downright reckless parental behavior!

You sign up to your local group, where you can post messages to say what you’re offering, or looking for. No money changes hands and it’s up to the person who wants an item to collect it, so you don’t have to stress about how you’re going to heave an unwanted futon out of your home.

Well, if you think placing it in the standard refrigerators is enough, check out this eco-friendly device that has been christened as the Kegerator. Now you can say that you are really going eco-friendly and socially responsible!

The Kegerator

Instead of relying on gasses similar to Freon, a process which can only be performed with energy-intensive compressors and heating coils, the new kegerators will rely on something called magnetic field refrigeration. In magnetic field refrigeration, electricity is introduced to a polarpolymer, causing the usually disordered molecules of the polarpolymer to become highly ordered. As this happens, heat is dispersed and the material grows cold. When the electricity is switched off this process reverses itself. And this doesn’t just mean more fun for the college crowd: someday Zhang predicts this technology will be used in everything from self-cooling gear for firefighters to chilling your CPU.

For one, not many people would go to the trouble of dedicating their time in going with the flow of the proper way to capitalize what global warming is all about. All except for one and his name is musician Chris Merkley who transformed an old school bus into a virtual eco-friendly tour bus.

“I did a lot of research up front to get a general idea of what would go into the bus and then I’ve been narrowing in on more specific topics as I get there, like with the insulation, studied up on heat transfer and everything associated with that just to try to understand the science of it before deciding what products would be best for it,”

If you think carbon emissions are primarily caused by gas-belching vehicles then guess again. This time around, even the standard gas-powered home mowers need to watch out as there are new emission rules that will be enforced to lower the emissions that they cause each time home owners decide to have their lawns trimmed.

Beginning in 2011, new gas-powered lawn and garden equipment of less than 25 horsepower will be required to reduce emissions by 35 percent, and all gas-powered recreational boats must reduce emissions by 70 percent in 2010, according to new EPA regulations

NEMO equipment of Nashua is planning to unveil thin bamboo tents for a pair of lightweight tent models in 2009.

The plan is to bank on a bamboo variety called Tonkin cane, which is sometimes dubbed “steel bamboo” for its dense fibers and long sections between nodes. Working with an Alaskan fly rod maker, NEMO’s prototype poles — which I handled and flexed at a recent press meeting — click together like any typical tent pole and whisk into nylon sleeves to support a shelter that might be put to endure hurricane-force winds.

To most consumers, it would not matter as long as they get their meals but sooner or later, most of us will appreciate the efforts of these companies such as Taco del Mar in doing away with the waste.

Among the things they aim to change are their waste bags, utensils, food lids and trays. This effort will go a long way and will certainly be good for business.

Taco del Mar, in a joint venture with Trellis Earth, may be the first big restaurant chain in the country to go green.

“We are going to be changing 16 pieces total in our packaging, everything from our trays to our lids to our garbage bags to our utensils will now be earth friendly,” said Erin Gilbert, Taco del Mar marketing director.

New Eco-Friendly Guitars for the Guitarists

One thing about pop icons and aspiring musicians today is that they love to use the best instruments in town. In this case, these guitarists may want to apply a certain green patch towards buying their next guitar. The best part of it is that people will not even know the difference (unless of course they divulge it).

Most of these guitars are made from bamboo or other wooden raw materials that are being tagged as dilapidating in terms of availability. As long as that guitar can carry the same tune, pop artists and guitar players will not know the difference.

Those looking to reduce their financial footprint will prefer the First Act Bambusa electric guitar ($400, right), made from bamboo, “one of the fastest growing plants in the world, and an uncommonly renewable resource,” with a water based finish and food-safe glue, should you run out of granola.

Next on the list are the Martin Sustainable Wood Series acoustic guitars ($1700), constructed from a mix of FSC-certified wood plus some old-growth mahogany and rosewood.

Your other option is the Gibson LEs Paul SmartWood, built with wood that has been certified by the Rainforest Alliance, which receives part of the revenue from each unit sold.
