Robotic Fish Sniff Out Pollution

The fight against river pollution is waring. The authorities have to contend with companies and individuals who think that disposing of waste in a river is ok to do. The problem is that all of the rivers cannot be monitored all of the time, until now that is.

The university of Essex have come up with robotic fish, they swim up and down the rivers while their sensors will check for pollutants, relay the results by using an on board Wi-Fi system and they navigate the rivers using GPS. At the end of the day, the fish will return to base to deliver results and a recharge of its batteries.

With sustainability issues in high gear, it is no surprise green jobs are in demand. Everything eco friendly and green is super hot right now and career offices are buzzing with interest, not too mention new job descriptions.

Yahoo has compiled a cool list of the top 5 green jobs in demand now. See it below.

Wind-Energy Developer
In especially high demand are wind-energy developers, who do the front-end work, including finding plots of land for wind farms, collaborating with meteorologists on wind assessments, and working with land owners and local regulatory agencies and power companies.

Wind Construction Project Manager
These positions manage the daily activities of constructing wind farms, such as road work, foundations, collection systems, substation, interconnection, and commissioning.

Sustainability Director
Sustainability directors devise ways for companies to be more environmentally sensitive through such methods as reducing a company’s “carbon footprint.” There’s an internal side of the job that looks holistically at how a company operates and creates ways to boost the bottom line through energy efficiency. On the external side, the director interacts with suppliers, regulators and products designers, as well as customers, investors, and advocacy groups.

Energy Engineer
Energy engineers help companies reduce their energy costs, often focusing on making buildings more energy efficient. These positions are in high demand, according to Beck, as more companies strive for energy efficiency.

Environmental Engineer
Using biology and chemistry principles to develop solutions to environmental problems is the work of environmental engineers, who seek to limit the effects of acid rain, global warming, car emissions, and ozone depletion.

Bromley Worst Polluter In London

The borough of Bromley has been given the dubious title of the worst polluting borough in the London creating 806,000 tonnes of Co2 Emissions in 2006 alone. The term could do better springs to mind.

Darren Johnson the London Assembly member for the Green Party said, “Bromley’s emissions are extremely disappointing.

“Climate change in the borough must be managed quickly and effectively if the Mayor’s target of cutting London’s CO2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025 is to be met.

“London’s homes are responsible for more than a third of the capital’s total emissions, so tackling domestic emissions is vital.”

However, it also has to be emphasized in the eco-friendly decision-making we do today that we should also try to refrain from buying goods or products that do not really serve a purpose for us other than satisfaction and boasting rights.

Why? For one thing, if the product has no use at all, chances are it will end up on the trash can. Once it does, it adds to waste issues to which add to the growing problem of controlling waste today.

Besides, look at it this way. You save on cost and you save the world from your garbage. So you are preaching eco-friendliness. But look at it more in-depth. You seem to be losing one aspect of the whole green thing.

Ecology is something that we all know through education and from current events. Taken as a whole, we only know of certain components such as global warming, greenhouse gases, pollution and climate change. The world is having a hard time focusing on only one of these areas.

Add to this that such concentration has not done any good. Progress has been slow and if this keeps up, another bomb similar to that atomic bomb that destroyed Japan some centuries ago will come back in the form of an ecological disaster which we have all been talking about.

We are all doing our part. But the efforts have not been realized. Hopefully people would realize that the issue may be green but it is not a laughing matter. We just have to thrive harder to meet goals and turn things around to avoid global disaster.

Protesters target Japanese embassies

Protesters from over sixty eco friendly and environmentalist groups are targeting Japanese embassies in cities around the world. The reason for the protest is the killing of dolphins and porpoise. The protest hit the embassies in over 31 cities, which included London, Washington, and Rio.

There are over 20,000 of these mammals killed every year, the international Whaling Commission has been calling for a ban on the killing these creatures for a long time. The protesters were wearing red and with red flowers, a very stirring effect.

Protesters target Japanese embassies

5th Biodiesel Plant To Open in Mississippi

In my resident state of Mississippi, the fifth and largest biodiesel plant is set to open soon. At full capacity the Scott Petroleum Biodiesel Plant will produce 20 million gallons of B100 a year, making it the largest in the Magnolia state.

This biodiesel will be a blend of soybean oil and animal fat mixed with traditional petroleum diesel.

With the growing biodiesel industry the demand for soybean crops is skyrocketed, which is creating a boon for local Mississippi farmers, who will see an increase in the price paid to them for soybeans.

Why biodiesel?

Biodiesel is cleaner fuel and made from renewable resources, not to mention a local domestic product, which means less reliance on foreign oil.

The new biodiesel will be available to both commercial and public users, here is a list of the diesel service stations from Scott Petroleum.

One such option is the Ecopod, which is the creation of Canadian Hazel Selina, who was involved for years with natural birth, and after a dear friend became ill, plus her interest in all things Egypt and ecology, she got to thinking of the idea and ARKA Ecopod Limited was born in May of 2006.

Ecopods, are eco friendly caskets made from 100% recycled paper and covered with handmade silk-screened paper. The low-impact coffin took over 9 years to develop and be designed. The gold leaf pod, which is their premium casket, is lined with feathers, so we say NO to that one. The shape of the Ecopod is seed like and for the creator it signifies a seed being put into the earth.

Biofuels have been pretty much praised for their advent since it has provided people to drive their cars using plants and other natural resources to produce them in lieu of oil and standard gasoline. While this phenomenon has indeed addressed the fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas issue, look a little bit further.

Food and crops are still essential towards providing the basic necessities as illustrated by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Thus, while one issue is being addressed, a bigger topic of concern on survival is being run over.

Hence, does it still stand the Biofuels have saved the day for green aware beings today?

Water is a natural resource that have slowly been a scarce need thanks to various means such as waste and pollution. A lot of the water reservoirs are at critical levels due to the impending climate changes and while there are some which are still available, chances are they is contaminated due to dumping of toxic waste.

It would be best to use water wisely. Leaving faucets open and forgetting to close them is not an excuse. We can live with it for now. But our future siblings may have a hard time dealing with it. Let us not make it hard for them to live gracefully like we have.

Being one of the world renowned universities famous in the world today, it is practically automatic to note that students enrolled at UC Berkeley. Tuition fees and enrollment costs will surely be among the points for consideration and added expenses will truly drive students and their parents crazy.

However, being enrolled at the UC Berkeley does not solely rely on what they will learn. Rather, it is also a matter of also considering the green initiative and contributions to the various problems of the green movement such as global warming, climate change, waste management, energy conservation and recycling.

To do their part, students have come together and put together the Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) to do their part in the whole issue that needs to be addressed. An extra buck will go a long way which will eventually be a good contribution towards the cause of the students at UC Berkeley.

While this has been something that was passed on and not inherited, personal satisfaction among people who can afford to smoke at will is something that cannot be banned unless they already see the imminent danger that they have caused.

But while we all know that one stick of cigarette takes away a portion of our life, it also takes away a certain proportion of trees that are serving as our guards from floods and pollution. Et al, tobacco is a health hazard both physically and mentally. We just have to look around or read the papers. It is a critical ingredient towards destruction today.

Near enough every school aged child can tell you that water is made up from hydrogen and oxygen (H2o) but that is not entirely accurate, for according to a report on the quality of the Canadian province of Ontario. They have found that the water there has some pretty unsavory additions to it and they are:

Examples of chemicals found in water

Run-off containing chemicals used on farms.
Antibiotics or other discarded medication poured down the toilet or sink.
Medication found in human waste.
Run-off from antibacterial soaps and shampoos.

However Ontario has one of the most sophisticated water treatment plants in the world, so if the water is bad there, then around the world it has to be the same or worse.

Print Your Own Solar Panels From Home

Researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have developed an inexpensive solar cell that can be painted or printed on flexible plastic sheets. This means, if it gets good enough, you could print out useable solar panels in your very own home!!

I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. The science isn’t that far along yet, but it is a possiblity.

“The process is simple,” said lead researcher and author Somenath Mitra, PhD, professor and acting chair of NJIT’s Department of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. “Someday homeowners will even be able to print sheets of these solar cells with inexpensive home-based inkjet printers. Consumers can then slap the finished product on a wall, roof or billboard to create their own power stations.”

“Developing organic solar cells from polymers, however, is a cheap and potentially simpler alternative,” said Mitra. “We foresee a great deal of interest in our work because solar cells can be inexpensively printed or simply painted on exterior building walls and/or roof tops. Imagine some day driving in your hybrid car with a solar panel painted on the roof, which is producing electricity to drive the engine. The opportunities are endless. ”

Aluminum cans were used in the early years but thanks to the need to pursue the change towards easier recyclable containers, people have turned to plastic use for better packaging and lesser waste concerns.

Plastic can be recycled and can be disposed of better. Cans can also be recycled but the thing is, they have other elements that may play a critical role when they are bought, consumed and recycled. Add to this the fact that the times have also shifted towards a new lease, banking on plastic as the new form of design packaging that will surely attract more customers to check them out.
