A Remote With No Batteries

We have seen a lot of innovative designs for remotes for our home gadgets. But if there is one thing common in them is that they make use of batteries. This is of course excluding the crank-style remote controls we have seen come out recently. But now we have one that doesn’t make use of any batteries at all. These new remotes being developed at the moment get their power from a small source called piezoelectric power.

The prototype TV remote control being shopped around to various manufacturers works on the “piezoelectric effect”, which in a nutshell converts mechanical stresses like pressure and vibration into electrical energy. These prototype remotes will be displayed at the Embedded Technology 2009 exhibition on November 18 through 20 at the PACIFICO Yokohama convention complex.

Hitachi is scheduled or release yet another lithium iron battery for consideration, obviously aimed at the growing clamor for hybrid electric cars. Boasting of a supposed high power density of 4,500 W/kg, 1.7 times the output of the company’s mass-produced, automotive lithium-ion batteries, this new battery is certain to be a welcome addition to the auto industry.

To reduce internal resistance, the battery employs a new manganese cathode and an original Hitachi battery structure, such as thinner electrodes, power collection method and effective configurations.

Sampling of the new battery by domestic and overseas car manufacturers will start in the fall.

Consumers Energy and Ford Motor Co. have come together to submit a pilot project which will enhance promotions in the use of electric vehicles. Ford will be supplying the utilities with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles to use in their daily operations.

The utilities also will develop and install “smart” charging facilities for the vehicles. The data from the vehicle use and charging systems will be shared and used to help shape the power infrastructure needed to meet customer needs as the use of electric vehicles expands.

Electric Vehicle Use to be Boosted by Consumer Energys and Ford Motor Project

ChargeBar Comes to Washington

With all the preparation going on with regards to the shift to electric cars, a need has become evidently apparent. I am of course talking about the need for charging stations similar to that of the usual gas stations that cars would need especially when they are frequently traveling.

Called the ChargeBar, GreenlightAC is on the verge of closing a $500,000 investment to release a prototype of this latest modern day car charging station. As far as location is concerned, the company is eyeing local garages for office and residential buildings. Greenlight AC will handle all installation and maintenance of the said charging stations.

GreenlightAC hasn’t said exactly where the first ChargeBars will show up, but they’ll start to be installed in the Washington metro area in the third quarter of this year, with future installations potentially expanding to other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region. The company told the Washington Business Journal that it expects to sell 350 of its charging stations by the end of next year.

ChargeBar Comes to Washington

BASF and Sion Team up for New Battery Technology

The demand for batteries is increasing and the zoom is expected to escalate the more in the coming months. And to make sure that they contribute towards stabilizing the demand for it, BASF and Sion Power have combined to speed up the cause to accelerate the commercialization of Sion Power’s proprietary lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery technology, e.g., for the electric vehicle (EV) market and other high-energy applications.

The Sion Power / BASF collaboration targets the development of battery materials to improve Li-S battery life and to increase the energy density and thus extend driving range of future EVs beyond what is currently available with alternative rechargeable battery technologies. Li-S technology already offers significant energy density and weight advantages over those existing technologies.

Improved battery technology is a fundamental requirement for more efficient use of current and renewable energy sources. The recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides for $2 billion for the development and manufacture of advanced automotive batteries. All major automotive manufactures are vigorously pursuing the introduction of electric vehicles that are environmentally friendly yet provide the range and comfort consumers expect in an automobile, features that cannot be obtained with any currently available battery technology.

BASF and Sion Team up for New Battery Technology

New Lithium-ion Factory To Open in Finland

With the demand for batteries expected to increase soon, the opening of more manufacturing plants has become a profitable opportunity. K2 Energy Solutions has revealed that they are constructing a new 90,000 square-foot facility in Varkaus, Finland. The new facility will be used to manufacture safe and eco-friendly high-capacity batteries for Europe’s advanced industrial, energy and transportation needs. It is being constructed in conjunction with K2’s European technology partner, European Batteries.

Utilizing the world’s most advanced lithium battery technology, K2 and EB are working in close collaboration to create the world’s most advanced rechargeable battery. Through this alliance, the companies intend to develop a safer, more efficient battery chemistry that is specifically designed to address Europe’s need for high-capacity rechargeable batteries.

The $44 million facility is expected to be completed in Fall of this year, with full battery production beginning in early 2010.

With the demand for lithium-ion batteries expected to increase, ExxonMobil takes the initiative in making sure that they distribute quality and efficient batteries once that happens. ExxonMobil Chemical continues to extend its technology leadership with the development of two new grades of V series co-extruded battery separator films.

These new developmental grades will help make lithium-ion batteries (LIB) safer than ever before for hybrid and electric vehicles, power tools and electronic devices including laptop computers.

Featuring improved thermal stability and lower shutdown temperature for a higher safety margin, the developmental grades add to the company’s battery separator film portfolio that includes the award-winning V-series separator films introduced in 2007.

Based on the same advanced co-extrusion technology platform and proprietary wet bi-orientation manufacturing process as V-series separator films, the developmental grades can help prevent thermal runaway in batteries while providing LIB designers more flexibility in selecting electrode systems and formats in battery designs to improve power and capacity density.

ExxonMobil Chemical currently manufactures battery separator films in Nasu, Japan, and is building a manufacturing facility in Gumi, Korea, to accommodate additional demand and serve global customers reliably and efficiently. The new manufacturing plant will be completed in 2010.

With the issue on batteries still mounting on how to properly dispose of the traditional ones, here is a great solution towards addressing the electronic waste issue. Even though they’re still in the prototype stage and not terribly efficient at this point, these solar powered rechargeable batteries are a brilliant idea.

Designed by Knut Karlsen, the SunCats are basically a set of old NiMH rechargeable batteries wrapped in a flexible Photo Voltaic cell created by the Institute for Energy Technology. When the batteries are drained, you simply leave them sitting in a windowsill or anywhere with ample sunlight and they’ll recharge themselves.

The PV cells were simply glued onto the batteries and wired up using a conductive silver pen and some flat wires scavenged from a broken canon lens.

Fuji’s Eco-Friendly EnviroMAX Batteries

Batteries will always be in demand even if with the emergence of rechargeable options in the market. The problem is how do you make batteries eco-friendly? Fuji seems to address that problem with the development of the EnviroMAX batteries.

The new batteries are free of mercury, cadmium, and PVC, chemicals cited by the European RoHS initiative as hazardous chemicals to be avoided (it’s unclear whether the new batteries will earn RoHS certification, however). Fuji claims to manufacturer them under strict ISO guidelines too, packaging EnviroMAX batteries in recycled paper and fully recyclable PET plastic.

The real threat of batteries comes in the form of disposal. If batteries are not disposed properly, chances of contracting poisonous chemicals from trashed used batteries will occur. Thank God Fuji has developed these types of batteries.

Flexible Solar Battery

Batteries have not had a good press, mainly because of what they contain and what happened to them when they are disposed of, which is normally into a landfill site. However, with so many everyday devices needing an AA battery, what can do?

These flat solar batteries can be used to replace conventional AA batteries and when they run down, the battery is removed and unrolled, and this charges it up. When the indicator shows that they are fully charged, they are simple rolled up and placed into the AA battery sized tube. These sound good, but unfortunately, there are no further details on price etc.

Fuel prices are soaring and alternative measures are needed. But a good planner will always determine where all of this is coming from. Barack Obama for instance, has focused on alternative energy and we all know how much hybrid and electric cars are being wooed as the better alternative.

For John McCain, looking for solutions to the oil problem is indeed commendable. But eventually it will point towards Obama’s way. Now that is good planning and McCain better find a quick antidote for this.

GP Solar Charger

To help minimize the waste problems as far as using batteries are concerned, rechargeable batteries are being offered in the market as a great alternative. Now while that may have resolved one issue, the manner of recharging may be another issue. Energy is a growing concern and the manner of recharging or plugging them into outlets is sure to be a problem.

But for the GPS solar charger, this issue should be resolved as well.

According to GP, it takes almost six hours to recharge two AA batteries (or 2 hours for AAA cells) under direct sunlight, which is slightly longer than what is usually expected of regular AC battery chargers. The advantage, however, is that the Solar Charger can be used outdoors where there is no access to the mains. Of course, with solar power being a free renewable source of energy, the Solar Charger also makes more economic and eco-friendly sense, too.
