O2 Announces Online Phone Recycling

Called O2 recycle, O2 provides a new online service to help people in properly getting rid of old gadgets and get some monetary value as well. Among the gadgets that O2 will be considering include the likes of MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS devices and other consumer electronics. All you have to do is drop by their site, enter the details of your device, get an estimated value, print off a receipt while a pre-paid postage bag is sent to them to put the phone and receipt in and send back.

Once the package arrives and is found in good working order, O2 will send a text confirming the receipt of the goods and the net value will be deposited onto the customer’s account. For every device O2 will donate £1 to the “It’s Your Community” charity while the products are sold on to global markets by Redeem.

O2 has revealed the new Sony Ericsson Naite, made mostly of recycled materials such as plastics. It also comes in reduced packaging and comes with an e-manual in lieu of the usual booklet type manuals that use up a lot of resources. It even comes with an called Ecomate which measures your carbon footprint.

Additionally, O2 has announced that they will be offering a free gift in the form of solar chargers or giving to charity. Or maybe you can donate to a number of worthy causes including tree planting in Ethiopia, primary education funding in Bangladesh, water systems in Africa and many more.

The Sony Ericsson Naite is available now for free on a limited offer monthly tariff of £14.69 a month on an 18 month contract. If you prefer the phone only, you can get it for £97.86.

We all have our share of ideal wants as far as mobile phones are concerned and while we do get crazy ideas, no one knows if they can really come true. Wooden casing for phones are indeed something that many would surely want to see but unless the big mobile phone manufacturers consider it, they are all figments of our imagination.

Imagine a Nokia phone made out of wood? Now that would certainly be a classic. But while we want to see this happen, the decision to manufacture them will still be left to the hands of the cellular phone giants.

It is indeed a great idea, but unless they can make it work, don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Whether or not the Nokia Wood phone will actually make it to the market is debatable, but it should be a step in the right direction; one would presume the screen is made of glass and not nasty plastic of course.

There is no doubt that landfills are a blot on the landscape, but recent research show that although landfills are not very nice places to be, they are in fact full of dumped electrical items. In Japan, it was found that they throw away twenty million mobile phones every year. These contain copper, gold, lead, palladium, tin, titanium and zinc.

If we consider the amount of dumped computers too, then there is a real wealth of resources being dumped into holes in the ground. It has been estimated that if Japan where able to refine these precious metals it would place them in the top five producers of this type of resource.

Samsung E2000 Eco Corn Phone

After two successive launches of eco-friendly phones, Samsung Electronics has unveiled its 3rd model, a cellular phone made of corn. The whole outer case of this new model, E2000 Eco, is made from corn and will start to be available by next month in Europe.

With most cellular phone manufacturers going green, Samsung is poised not to be left out and this can be seen by the new E200 Eco phone which follows the footsteps of previous models, W510 and the F268 that were mainly catered to the Asian Market.

The E200 features a 1.3 megapixel camera, video messaging capabilities and an MP3 player.

Although the device will be available in Europe next month, it doesn’t yet have a release date in the United States.

Nokia has added another feather in its cap as far as going green is concerned. Most companies today are trying to figure out a way to go green and Nokia, a known cellular phone giant manufacturer, has just offered the world another dimension towards green living standards by using recycled materials and offering an OLED screen to reduce power usage of these phones.

No pricing has been divulged but it is sure to be costly. This is only normal considering new mobile phones in the market are always coming out at expensive rates which eventually diminish over time.

It is pleasant to see that Nokia is stepping up with technology that will give it nurturing care to the earth. The Nokia Eco-Sensor is manufactured with eco materials combined with sensors that keep an eye on pollution levels. The phone uses recycled materials such as plant based plastics and 100% recycled steel for its casing.

The phone goes a step forward with pollution control by using an OLED screen to reduce power usage by the phone. The phone also checks the weather information by checking the humidity and Nokia plans a health version as well, which will monitor the heart rate. To add icing to the cake, Nokia has plans of inculcating a solar powered battery as well.

They used to be the good green people claiming first place in the green electronics but that is old news because they have slipped right down to ninth place and it is mainly to do with the company’s failure to support its recycling claims.

Greenpeace sent into Nokia dealers, mobile users who wanted to recycle their phones and yet the dealers know nothing about the program in Argentina, Philippines, Thailand, Russia, and India.

The way that Greenpeace operate this scheme is not solely on recycling, it takes in consideration many factors, including materials used in manufacture and production process itself.
