This new alternative printer ink concept is tapping the coffee and tea resources to carry out the printing needs of consumers today.

The concept comes from RiTi printers. The RiTi Printer replaces traditional printer ink with coffee or tea. They are perfectly readable which makes them a good alternative. The concept of the RiTi printer does not require a power source for the actual printing process which is also something that traditional printers require. Fifty Per Cent Of US Workers Leave PCs On

Around a couple of years ago, it was found that the cost of workers leaving their computers on when they left work was costing US businesses around $1.7 billion per year in energy that is simply wasted. But instead of getting better, the amount of wasted energy has now risen to $2.8 billion according to a report by 1e.com.

This is a problem that could easily be sorted, by companies ensuring that their staff simply shut down their computers when they leave yet half of employees are guilty of doing this according to the survey. But at the same time sixty per cent of US employees think that their employers should be doing more to reduce the amount of energy that they using.

It’s called Etsy and it is the latest wooden USB drive in the market today. It features a wooden body that comes in a sleek black. Of course, if you’re the type that you’re very particular about the way things look, you can even contact the seller to get other materials used to create the drive. Being a drive with so many options it’s going to cost you more than an average USB drive, but it’d look great to carry around.

The drive is available with 1 or 4GB of memory on the inside, which is a bit small (especially for the price). So it’d have to be for someone that doesn’t do a whole lot that requires a lot of memory. In the picture, the creator Fordos, used wood and silver, but they can also use other metals such as gold, titanium, bronze and so on. To get the 4GB drive it’ll cost you only an extra $10 to the price. For the 1GB version it will cost you $140 through Fordos on Etsy.

Western Digital’s “Green” My Book Unveiled

Western Digital introduced another innovative piece of device today when it released the new updated version of its My Book World Edition NAS device. The said device is compatible with both MACs and PCs and will be available in 1TB and 2TB versions.

It uses Western Digital latest high capacity drives, the Caviar Green series, which means that it now consumes a third less power compared to the previous models and should have better performance.

The drive comes with a USB2.0 and a Gigabit Ethernet port; it is also UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) and DLNA 1.5 ready and features an embedded iTunes media server.

Western Digital’s “Green” My Book Unveiled

Software Can Save $1,000’s

Software developed at the University of Liverpool could end up saving similar institutions thousands of dollars per week by saving energy. What this software does is simply shut down computer systems when they are not in use, they estimate that a computer that is on for twenty four hours a day, but is only used for forty hours per week will use 17 kW of electricity, but around 13 kW of this is wasted.

The university tested this software, which they called PowerDown on 1,600 computers; these were wasting 20,000 kW each week, when this is put into money that works out at about $3,600 in wasted power. It is clear how large organisations can make use of this software to save energy and power.

This Cardboard PC May Need More Study

Who would ever thought that the standard steel casing of CPUs would be copied using cardboard? Well at first thought, you would think it would not be possible and even perhaps dangerous. But the thing is, they did do it. But of course, a lot of question still wander in the air.

What they’re doing is making more green the one part of the computer that probably doesn’t need to be greened. The components inside are all plastic, silicon, metal, and rubber, and they make up 90% of the mass of the thing. I’m all in favor of making things more eco-friendly, but this is barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. How often are cases replaced? Maybe one per year per person.

Could this be the greenest computer ever, it is the idea of Brenden Macaluso to combat the rising amounts of e-waste that has become a nasty side effect of the computer industry. The idea is to replace all of the plastic and metal parts with recycled cardboard.

The concept is pretty good, but no doubt owners of Alienware might not agree, however with only three electrical components the motherboard including memory and processor, power unit and of course, the hard drive is there the possibility of interference and overheating?

Is it possible? A PC that consumes zero-watts? Apparently Fujitsu claims it can do so with its Esprimo Green PC which is expected to hit the stores by summer. It is said to consumer zero power on standby mode and this is really something bound to get a lot of techies curious.

Leading the line for Fujitsu along with a whole other host of green systems to help businesses lead that eco-fight, the Esprimo Green PC looks likely to get the vote from the politicians but might have a way to go to convince the PC buying public.

LG Unveils Solar Powered 14.1 Inch LCD Monitor

Here is something that is bound to get the attention to techies today. We know for a fact that LCD monitors have rampantly grown in demand and what perhaps separates them from the rest is the power consumption and the resolution.

But LG seems to have taken the step ahead as it has launched a 14.1 LCD panel that thrives on reflective rays of the sun to operate. Such is a great alternative towards addressing the power consumption of computers and LCD monitors today and this is definitely a great step towards that direction.

The panel uses selective reflection plates that exist in the backlight panels and the Backlight Data Signal Switching Technology to switch from reflective mode in high luminance setting, which is sunlight, to transmissive mode in low lights in indoors and at night. This panel is the first of its kind that easily switches from backlight use to outdoor reflective mode “with the touch of a button”.

Reducing the carbon footprint of any company is an essential thing these days, not just because it is the right thing to do, but because their customers demand it, and it that demand that has driven toe computer company Dell to introduce the green initiative.

To this end Dell have replaced the usual paper and cardboard packaging with a cushion system made from one hundred per cent High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) this is normally found in the plastic bottle which contain washing liquid and milk, not necessarily at the same time. Dell say that their packaging will use around thirty three million milk jugs by 2009, saving around 150,000 trees and about $8 million for Dell!

There is no doubt that the Lawn PC is green, you can see that, but will it generate enough power to keep the machine going? It is doubtful if that is possible, even with the ever improving solar cells, these at the moment are not going to be able to power a pc running a full complement of applications.

Apple Goes Eco Friendly

When you have used up the ink on your printers, the immediate instinct is to replace them. But what do you do with the old one? Throw them to the nearest garbage can? Thanks to the efforts of Hewlett Packard, you can do your share for joining their vision of recycling used cartridges.

Called the closed loop process, the used cartridges are not melt, refilled or placed in a landfill. They are recycled and made part of the new line of production, plastic of which is their usual casing.

The process first breaks down plastic in printer cartridges made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), after which additives including fibers and resins are used to strengthen and regenerate the plastic. The remolded plastic is then used to manufacture new HP inkjet cartridges.

So if you have a used up cartridge, set it aside. Send it to HP and you are doing the world a favor as well.

There are two models the MV100 Tower and the MZ100 slim Tower, these computers both use the latest Intel G43 Chip set and will use a mere 1W of power while on standby and just 60W of power when they are on power saving mode.

There is no doubt that landfills are a blot on the landscape, but recent research show that although landfills are not very nice places to be, they are in fact full of dumped electrical items. In Japan, it was found that they throw away twenty million mobile phones every year. These contain copper, gold, lead, palladium, tin, titanium and zinc.

If we consider the amount of dumped computers too, then there is a real wealth of resources being dumped into holes in the ground. It has been estimated that if Japan where able to refine these precious metals it would place them in the top five producers of this type of resource.

To heed that call, Lenovo joins other computer manufacturers offering an eco-friendly computer as it unveils its Lenovo ThinkCentre A62 primarily aimed at businesses who are the first parties that will surely need computers for daily operations.

Built around a 15-watt AMD Althon X2 5000M AM2 CPU running at 2.6 GHz, the ThinkCentre A62s will ship with a 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM, 16x DVD-ROM, gigabit Ethernet, and Windows Vista Home Premium – although, of course, Lenovo also offers custom configurations, like a 2.7 GHz AMD Athlon 1640B AM2 CPU, Vista Business, up to 500 GB of storage, DVD burners, and up to 4 GB of RAM. Lenovo Offers Eco-Friendly Desktop

BenQ Introduces E900HD and G900HD Eco-Friendly Monitors

Here is something that advanced computer geeks are sure to want to have. BenQ is reportedly offering a new line of eco-friendly monitors which uses a 16:9 resolutions. The new monitors, E900HD and G900HD offer an 18 inch screen and a 1366×758 720p resolution. What makes them eco-friendly is their unique backlighting system that can “produce the same 300-nit brightness as most displays by using a two-lamp backlight versus the four that would otherwise be necessary.” Power consumption is said to be reduced by 30W and mercury levels by 50 percent.

Each display also sports a nice 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 5ms pixel response time. Both displays also have built-in speakers or headphone jacks for private listening.

There was no price available yet but BenQ says the displays will hit the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and South America this month. No word on US launch.

BenQ Introduces E900HD and G900HD Eco-Friendly Monitors

Samsung Offers Eco-friendly Printers

Samsung is a brand known in the electronics world but not in printers. But while they may be known for monitors or even mobile phones, their product line also has a few of these printers in tow. In fact, to jumpstart their eco-friendly efforts, they are offering a new trade-in program (TIP) that will allow their customers to trade-in their old laser printers valued at most at $200 and then get a new one.

Not a bad deal if you want to get these new eco-friendly devices these days. A new printer may be the best bet to go eco-friendly through proper disposal of your old printer and get a new one in lieu of that.

The program began on July 1, and will run until September 30, 2008. First, the customer needs to purchase any new model Samsung printer, including laser models and MFPs. Then, visit www.samsung.com/tip to enter details about their old printer model. Results will be tabulated to determine how much the printer is worth.

Then, just fax or mail back the confirmation e-mail, along with the original proof of purchase receipt and the old product (a shipping label will be provided), and Samsung will send a cheque for the appropriate amount within 6-8 weeks once the product has been received and inspected.

Computer manufacturers have showed us most of the gadgets and gizmos all throughout the years and today, the gauging point is which among them are adhering towards the eco-friendly standards. LCD monitors have boomed since years back and today, they are vying for positioning as far as eco-friendly standards are concerned.

For LG, being dubbed as the “most eco-friendly monitor” is certainly something that will need backing. Their LG Flatron W2252TE monitor reduces energy consumption by 45%, quite a big number compared to the other LCD monitors up for grabs in the market today.

The Flatron W2252TE (is that l33t speak for something?) is a 22″ widescreen LCD monitor, which runs on a 45% reduction (40W) in power consumption compared with earlier models. And LG has promised that this is only the start of things to come…

Old computers and peripherals have become a growing concern for most people who want to dispose of these technology gadgets. While many try to get rid of them the natural way, like donating them to schools for the use of the youth, it just remains that they will still come to a point where definite disposal will be needed.

Computers and gadgets are no doubt rampant when it comes to demand and use. The fast changing times of having to upgrade and purchase new computer products in the market have relegated old ones to the trash bin which of course need the proper means of being disposed.

In Mumbai, here is a great way of disposing them with proper monitoring to make sure that they are indeed put to waste. It does include a little bit of manual labor but the fact is they have come up with a great alternative towards proper disposal of e-waste.

The discarded hardware is taken to a shredder at the company’s plant on a conveyor belt.

After that, its components are segregated through a metal extractor. Then, workers manually separate the plastic from the metal.

And if someone has issues with data security, the entire process is filmed in the mobile van and the CD is handed over to them.

The initiative is a hit with corporates and in just three months, Eco reco already has 50 clients.

”Earlier, we used to donate to schools thinking we have done charity but we were in turn putting our problem onto someone’s head,” says T R Doongaji, MD, Tata Services Limited.

If the 21st century is powering down the information superhighway, the least we can do is minimise our carbon footprint.

Game consoles such as the Playstation 3 and the Xbox have totally changed the face of modern entertainment as both adults and the youth have been so attached to these modern day games today. We can see them sleeping less and focusing a lot in playing these high-end games all thanks to their graphics and the storylines which simply challenges the minds of modern people today.

While this technological enhancement has been something worth noting, it would be best to see if these game consoles have passed the green standards of healthy living. Energy consumption is another thing since seeing that they are being used extensively by owners, did they even consider applying the electricity it needs to operate?

The materials used is another, and surely these thing have to be addressed. I hate to be a party pooper but it seems we have overlooked one aspect important in globalization and eco-friendly living today.

As far as wise computing is concerned, we all have our preferences for the main processor that our computer would hold. Apparently, we fail to recognize the real issue on our processors that of which is speed that emits heat. Heat in turn is the energy wasted and thus the real score here is to reduce that heat using the latest technology while at the same time providing the same level of performance due today.

Such is the intent of Intel’s new processor, the Intel Core Duo E7200 processor. It lies heavily in trying to shield the heat and providing the same level of performance in computers today. Though it may be heavier, it should help prove how the eco-friendly matters that it boasts of sets in.

Once we got our first “Wolfdale” chips in for testing, we realized that a modern dual-core processor can still bring exceptional performance for today’s high-end machines. While quad-cores definitely have more appeal for the heavy multi-tasking power user, dual-cores can typically accomplish most tasks with performance to spare, but can do so with much lower power consumption and heat production. In addition, if your application of choice is only coded to handle two processor cores, it can actually run faster on a highly-clocked dual-core compared to a mid-range clocked quad-core. While the wave of multi-core software is rising every day, we still haven’t seen truly compelling numbers in main stream applications showing that quad-core processors are worth their premiums for many average, everyday computing scenarios.

Fujitsu Ltd knows that it has to come up with something to contribute towards the growing concern for the environment. Each company today is expected to do their part of being socially responsible and a lot of them are being sought from the products that they offer in the market.

Apparently, Fujitsu is a well-known brand in the laptop business and to make sure it doesn’t go unnoticed, an eco-friendly laptop is set to be released soon. Using a new type of casing in the form of wooden cased laptops, Fujitsu plans to display its FMV-BIBLO NX95Y/D, a notebook that uses bio-based plastic materials for part of its housing, at the Milan show. The notebook is only available in Japan.

“Amid growing concern over environmental problems, bio-based plastics have attracted considerable attention as an environmentally friendly material which lowers the burden on the environment by using less petrochemical-based materials to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” Fujitsu said in a statement.

It seems the UK have a surplus of serviceable yet out dated computers and despite the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which should see most electrical items disposed of using the manufacturers own disposal facilities, it is estimated that some twelve and half million older laptops and PC’s have not been recycled or reused.

What’s worse is what is actually happening to these old machines. Twenty five per cent are taken to the tip, just dumped anywhere or get thrown out with the household waste. However ten per cent of people say that they have recycled their computer, while forty per cent claim to have given their old computers to friends, family or charities.

But over six million people said they leave their old computers lying around the house, garden or garage and over five million just take their old outdated machine to the local dump where they will ultimately end up in the landfill site.
