A Remote With No Batteries

We have seen a lot of innovative designs for remotes for our home gadgets. But if there is one thing common in them is that they make use of batteries. This is of course excluding the crank-style remote controls we have seen come out recently. But now we have one that doesn’t make use of any batteries at all. These new remotes being developed at the moment get their power from a small source called piezoelectric power.

The prototype TV remote control being shopped around to various manufacturers works on the “piezoelectric effect”, which in a nutshell converts mechanical stresses like pressure and vibration into electrical energy. These prototype remotes will be displayed at the Embedded Technology 2009 exhibition on November 18 through 20 at the PACIFICO Yokohama convention complex.

Eco-friendly packaging is all over the news today and apparently Sprint is following the trend. Being a popular spot for mobile phones and gadgets, the need for eco-friendly packaging should be something that will place Sprint into the record books. Actually they have been named the 15th Most Green Telecom Company and are bound to be ranked higher in the future.

Beginning this month, Sprint will ship out these packages to all retail and online stores. The packages have become about 20 to 40 percent smaller, which will save 647 tons of waste each year; it will also help Sprint save 35% on packaging and shipping costs, to the tune of around $2.1 annually.

Called O2 recycle, O2 provides a new online service to help people in properly getting rid of old gadgets and get some monetary value as well. Among the gadgets that O2 will be considering include the likes of MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS devices and other consumer electronics. All you have to do is drop by their site, enter the details of your device, get an estimated value, print off a receipt while a pre-paid postage bag is sent to them to put the phone and receipt in and send back.

Once the package arrives and is found in good working order, O2 will send a text confirming the receipt of the goods and the net value will be deposited onto the customer’s account. The Kodak Solar Charger KS100-C+2 can produce enough power to emit 1.5 charges that can power up a standard mobile phone or portable media player and of course, digital cameras.

It takes 28 hours of sunlight to fully charge up the charger, so it’s handy that it can also charge up via USB – although this takes a not-inconsiderable 14 hours. It goes on sale in September for £34.99.

Unknown to many, the Kindle has some eco-friendly features. To most, it is an alternative reading device but apparently this new gadget that has been adored by millions seems to be providing its part of environmental contributions in terms of energy consumption and materials.

The Kindle can produce a potential savings of 1,074 kg of CO2 if it replaces three books a month for four years or a whopping 26,098 kg of CO2 when used to its fullest capacity.

The Kindle can still break even if it replaces 22.5 books over its lifespan, although its impact can turn to a negative if folks continue to buy books and print periodicals in addition to e-books and don’t recycle them. But that would eventually depend on a person’s needs and wants.

Though it may not necessarily be complimentary to cars (the Mercedes Benz in particular) there are some people who would consider placing a different kind of hood ornament, especially one that lights up thru wind power.

Available for just about $5, you can get this plastic emblem that can light up presumably when you are speeding up along the roads. Though the original emblems are still desired by picky car owners, it is an idea.

As the name of the gadget connotes, this charger thrives on solar energy which can reportedly last up to 3 months. This is one of the eco-friendly chargers suited for people who have tons of gadgets in hand and have issues as far as recharging is concerned.

The FreeLoader is 120mm long when fully extended, and 17mm thick, made of smooth aluminium. The solar panels slide out when you want to charge it, and can alternatively be charged via USB. The only drawback is that these hybrid lawn mowers can only cater to small lawns, most probably because of the electric energy limitations and the coverage scope of the remote control it comes with.

These new refillable batteries made for specific devices will be made available by Energizer starting in July. They will be available in the usual stores like Best Buy, Staples, Target and Apple.

The line ranges from a large 18,000 mAh device that can charge three gadgets at once, to a 600 mAh wallet-sized charger just right for giving your cell phone a boost. There will also be solar-powered options and a model just for iPhones.

The price range for these new refillable batteries will range from $19.99 to $199.99.

The best thing about it is that although it is geared to being green, you will hardly notice the sacrifice in features and quality.

This 1080p LCD display comes with an Eco Mode that lets you control how much power it uses and the automatic light dimming uses up to 20% less than when it runs normally. In standby mode, the Loewe Art SL sucks just 0.7 watts. As you might expect, these power saving features don’t come cheap.

However, the LCD TV Association is gearing up for a shift towards a greener future in the world of LCD TVs. The LTA’s GreenTV logo program was launched last year in an effort to help focus LCD TV manufacturers and brands on reducing the power consumption of LCD TVs and raising consumer awareness of this important issue.

The program currently aims to work with major TV vendors to implement and promote ambient light sensors, which will automatically lower the set brightness in a dark room by decreasing power to the backlight — thus saving energy and actually reducing potential eyestrain as well. This can reduce power consumption by at least 30%, and as much as 60%, in current implementations.

Program participants are awarded the right to use the LTA’s unique GreenTV logo on products, packaging, marketing and advertising material to help consumers identify these specifically enabled and wonderfully featured sets.

The HYmini is a stylish, portable wind turbine that is amazingly versatile, saving up green electricity and dishing it out to 5V devices as required. It comes with a variety of connectors and can be mounted to your bike or your arm.

HYmini comes in your choice of green, black or white and includes a “1200 mAh built-in Lithium Ion Polymer rechargeable battery power bank”. The battery stores both wind-generated power and also solar power generated by miniSOLAR, a small self-contained solar panel included in the main HYmini package but also sold separately.

One notable drawback of the HYmini mentioned by GadgetReview’s testers is that it’s not compatible with either the iPod Shuffle or even worse, the iPhone. Non-Shuffle iPods are OK though, as they connect via the HYmini’s included USB connector. On the other hand, one commenter disputes this, stating the “iPhone is designed to switch from 12V to 5V power source for recharging when it is plugged to the computer/laptop.”
