Starbucks Switches to LED Lighting

Starbucks has been known to take its own initiative as far as being eco-friendly is concerned and apparently this development should be considered the big switch. Over 8,000 stores will now be lit up by LED lighting which many may see as a great initiative to save on some energy costs and of course preach LED light alternatives.

The LED light swap will cut energy consumption by about 7% at each store, and is part of the company’s goal to cut total energy consumption by 25% by the end of 2010. With a company this size, there are a lot of ways the carbon footprint can be cut down inexpensively.

For many people lighting is something that is just there. Very rarely does somebone go out and replace all of the lighting in their home. So, it is very interesting to see designer’s ideas on lighting and how it could fit into the modern home.

These particular designs are by France based Pierrick Desville and come from his project known as the Reverbere Project, where retro light fittings and lights are given a new lease on life. It is a sort of steampunk design for lights. It is a matter of personal taste of course not everyone is going to like these, but they are making use of otherwise useless items.

Occasionally eco friendly design does not do itself any favours, take this lamp designed by Liquidesign. It covers all of the criteria laid down to be an eco friendly table lamp, but from a design point of view is this not just a paper bag with a lamp inside.

For supporters of the eco friendly lifestyle this will be applauded as a brilliant piece of design, which if course it is, but for other people the ones who need to be persuaded about changing their lifestyles this type of design is not going to work. With only a small window in the side too, it is debatable as to the quality of the light provided, as it all seems to head up to the ceiling.

When you first look at this lampshade, you would hardly know its origins; it has the look of a lampshade found in a 1960’s home. Yet the materials used to produce these fantastic looking lampshades is simply recycled cola bottles that have been saved from the landfill.

These lampshades are the creation of Sarah Turner, who uses roughly ten bottles in the medium-sized table lampshade. It is an incredible idea that uses up one of the real nasties of waste disposal, plastic drinks bottles.

Earth Hour will take place on the 28^th March at 8.30 pm local time. People are encouraged to take just sixty off from using their lights and spend this time outside with family and friends. This has been running for two years now and every year the movement gets larger, this year’s target is one billion people. Just turn the lights off and take an hour off, imagine the result is everyone did that?

We have seen various kinds of energy sources, but nothing like this new concept; a lamp that thrives on dirt. The soil lamp uses the chemical reaction between copper, zinc, and slightly moistened mud to create enough electrical current to power an LED lamp. More cells can be used to create a brighter light or power more bulbs.

Perhaps inspired by Tesla’s wireless energy, Staps might be on to something. If there’s enough energy in dirt to grow huge redwoods, why not power a tiny little bulb? No word on when or if the soil lamps will ever hit the market.

Surya Roshni Limited launched PH+ technology CFL lamps, which gives higher lumen and energy saving in CFL lamps. The CFL is eco-friendly green lamp made with Green Technology by using DPT technology. Superior quality fluorescent powder is used to make the lamps, which gives higher lumen output.

These lamps also have inbuilt power stabilizer to control a wide range of voltage fluctuation prevailing in many parts of the rural areas. The energy saving lamps last up to five years and gives energy saving of 80 per cent. It means, if the electricity bill is for Rs. 100 per month, with the use of Surya CFL, it will be only Rs 20 per month and the savings will be Rs. 80 per month. Replacement of a normal GLS build with Surya CFL will save the electricity charges up to Rs 500 annually.

Surya sells 15 crore lamps every year. Its products are sold to as much as 15 crore households/families in the country. It has reach even in the remote corners of the country and its products are being sold through its business network of 30 branches and 1,00,000 retailers across the country.

Here they have been used to replace lamp shades, it is an interesting concept that just goes to prove that with a bit of imagination, almost anything can be reused in one way or another; it just takes a bit of imagination. These light fittings are from The Greenpoint a Brooklyn based design firm who specialise in using alternative surfaces.

At some point, students would need lamps to assist them in their needs. Apparently there is one new lamp in the market at the moment and it runs on solar power.

To charge up the light, it has an attached solar panel that charges a NimH battery, that will then last up to six hours. The halo design utilizes 24 LED lights, that are apparently set up in such a way that they’ll be more comfortable than the standard lamp.

This was created by an Indian company to help out low-income students in developing countries, especially in areas that have issues with power shortages. With this, even when the power is out, you could still continue studying. The lamp is priced at $33, which isn’t bad, but it does seem a bit steep to be marketed towards low-income students.

These great looking lights look a bit like a hatching bird but only its legs have come out of the shell and somehow the chick has managed to stand. However, in reality things like that do not happen, or do they? These solar powered lamps are quite cute looking and would make a great addition to apartment living.

The lamps are the brain child of Berlin based designer, Michael Hilgers who has added a great touch by making the legs and feet orange to give them a real chick look. They come in two varieties, the solar powered version and the less technical tea light powered version.

Super Bowl 2009 Was Green (Well, Sort Of)

I’m not sure why there wasn’t much press on the fact that the Superbowl made an attempt to be green this year.

As the New York Times reports, this year the Superbowl initiated several eco-friendly changes to game day.

Some of the changes included:

a composting program
the use of biodegradable plates forks straws and napkins
new LED lighting displays
the recycling of cooking grease.

Surely these subtle changes and or additions don’t put the Superbowl on any “Top 10 Eco friendly Event” list, but just the fact that they are being cognizant of how HUGE this event is in terms of energy usage and resources, means they are headed in a solid direction.

And every bit helps.

But for Coca Cola, a company known to invest heavily on outdoor advertising, using other means of energy like let us say “wind power” to power a large billboard in Times Square is certain to draw some attention outside the actual ad.

“Coke said the switch of its billboard alone will be the equivalent of taking 75 cars off roads or converting 38 houses to clean energy for a year,”

There is no doubt that this is a marketing ploy but as long as there is a touch of eco-friendly elements behind it, why not?

The Big Apple has come a long way since those nasty days of the 1970’s and 1980’s now there are car free zones and the plastic bag tax, but one thing that could be significant is the testing of new LED street light, if this is successful then the cities thirty thousand street could be replaced by them.

These lights will cut the cities power usage by around thirty per cent; these savings would mean that the city would see a return on their investment within two to three years. Should these lights get the go ahead then is possible that other lighting could be applied to the units, such as traffic and crossing control.

ECOWOOD Lights the Roads

The outdoors and the roads need lighting to help guide drivers and bystanders on where they are going particularly at night. We have seen much of the traditional lamp posts but their means of energy consumption has been something to ponder upon.

Taeyang Electronics has developed a new and eco-friendly outdoor lighting system called ECOWOOD, a road lighting invention based from wood grain and patterns.

Taeyang’s newest invention, ECOWOOD, is manufactured through a complex process. It begins with procreating the steel or aluminum body several times in order to coat it with polyurethane. After powder-coating process with polyurethane, the road lighting is then refined in 200degC oven.

Wind Powered Lighting

This is nice idea where wind power can be used to power seasonal lighting, these lights are only tiny LED builds, but they use a small 2.4 inch propeller, which is very similar to one of those that children play with.

The lights stand on pole and because of the way, that propeller is made it only takes the smallest breeze to get the thing moving and begin to produce light. However, what is great about these is that they can be used in large groups to produce a spectacular design that does not use any power at all, excellent!
