The ring probably uses a kind of moss for the plant, but it needs frequent watering just like any other plant. EcoSMART Warns Parents of Harmful Pesticides Used in Schools

As schools start to welcome the students for the new school year, EcoSMART is gearing up an effort to remind parents of the harmful effects of pesticides used by schools for their classrooms. Pesticides and other known toxic chemicals are commonly used to ensure the hygiene and cleanliness of schools but the fact remains that their remains or fumes can be harmful to kids.

EcoSMART offers information online for parents to learn about how commonly used pesticides with harmful chemical ingredients can be a threat in school and at home for children, and supports the nonprofits Beyond Pesticides and Healthy Child Healthy World in providing information to help parents better understand the issues of pest control.

EcoSMART is thus urging parents to talk to school officials about the SEPA ruling, and health dangers of toxic pesticide use, and to take initiative in their own homes, and gardens, to make the living environment free of harmful chemical pesticides.

If you are eco-conscious and green like me, you will want to take some simple steps to keeping your carbon footprint in check. Here are some tips to have fun going out and watching the fireworks this July 4th Independence Day the green way!

1. Do not drive your car, especially if you are heading into the city. The city will be congested with tons of cars and traffic, why would you want to add to the chaos of carbon monoxide on holidays? Plus, if you are planning to drink alcohol, not having your car will take any chances of you getting a DUI, not something you want to get on Independence Day where you are supposed to be “free”. Take public transportation or at least carpool to the show please!

2. If you must drive a long ways to a big city to watch the fireworks, get a hotel room in advance and book a room at hotels near where the fireworks actually can be watched from your room. You can then invite all your friends that live around there and have a blast watching the fireworks in your hotel room!

3. Make sure to recycle all your beer bottles and whatnot. Just because you are buzzed doesn’t mean you shouldn’t recycle and stay “green”.

4. If none of these works for you, just stay home and watch the fireworks on your LCD HDTV. You can also read up on how to watch fireworks on a budget in the comfort of your room without seeing all the drunk people here.

5. If you are in San Francisco Bay Area, check out these tips on “where” to watch the fireworks and not be disappointed.

Audi TDI is gearing up to help address the growing need for carbon emission issues with the announcement that they will donate $1 to The Nature Conservancy voluntary carbon offset program for every Facebook user who joins the cause.

The donation will directly benefit The Nature Conservancy voluntary carbon offset program, which features the Tensas River Basin as its first project. The Tensas River Basin Project counterbalances carbon emissions by reforesting private lands to capture and store carbon, as well as to restore critical habitats to native species.

Cracking down on the carbon emission issue may seem common these days as various groups and sectors are trying to do their part to address it. And with the intent to help restructure the dilapidating forests through the Nature Conservancy effort, Audi becomes another key player to try in the fight for a cleaner and greener community aside from its contribution towards the car industry.

“Our engineers are always innovating to reduce our vehicles’ carbon emissions, and we’ve taken a giant leap forward with the introduction of the Audi Q7 TDI clean diesel this year,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “But our commitment doesn’t stop with our products; we want to promote reduced emissions through support of organizations like The Nature Conservancy, and also to spread the word about the benefits of reduced emissions.”

The Big Green Bus: A Vehicle for Change

Come June 17th, a bunch of kids from Dartmouth will be embarking on a cross country road trip to preach green. This is actually the 5th Annual Cross-Country Road Trip where students try to educate various sectors about sustainability and green living on a big green bus.

But here have been improvements. The Big Green Bus has undergone major changes. For one, it will be running on waste vegetable oil. However the most glaring thing about it is that this bus has been transformed as a classroom on wheels which can more than accommodate the 40 educational stops across its route.

“This year, the Bus interior will resemble a ‘green’ living room. We hope to connect with homeowners by presenting environmental and economic issues facing our society today, and how individual action can help mitigate these problems,” according to Merritt Jenkins, a member of Dartmouth’s Class of 2010 and co-general manager of the Big Green Bus. “From New York to San Francisco, we will be traveling the country helping Americans make energy conscious choices.”

The Big Green Bus: A Vehicle for Change

Ecopetrol Discovered in Putumayo

Ecopetrol of Colombia discovered oil at the Quriyana-1 well, located in the municipality of Orito, province of Putumayo, Colombia. This will perhaps be providing expanded hopes of adding more oil resources for local and world utilization and needs. Ecopetrol began drilling into the Quriyana-1 exploratory well on November 5, 2008 and reached a total depth of 8.445 feet (nearly 2.5 kilometers) in the first week of February 2009.

The initial tests showed a production of API 26 degrees crude in natural flow and a choke (well opening) of 20/64 inches. The lower Caballos formation contributed an average stable flow of 96 oil barrels per day (bpd) and the upper sandstones produced an average stable flow of 195 barrels per day

In the next few weeks, Ecopetrol will analyze the results obtained and will continue evaluating the behaviour of production and pressure in this well. It is important to note that this well is located near many other Ecopetrol production fields, which could help bring the well on stream in the short term.

Another Use For Plastic Bottles

It seems that there should be a world championship for uses that can found for plastic bottles. We have seen so many now that a league table would put them all into perspective. Like this idea from Australia, here we see that even school children have been getting into the act and they have made a very cool job of it too.

Using only plastic bottles, two students were able to build a huge green house (the building did have a steel frame as a starting point). The bottles were cut and placed onto a piece of PVC pipe, which was then fixed to the frame. Another great use of plastic bottles!

Here is great idea and also a great play on words; Studio Crank has designed and produced a simple but very effective waste paper system. The Chuck trash basket is used around the home or office for waste paper, nothing fantastic about that! Yet, the basket itself has been produced from a 100 per cent recycled cardboard and the printed design is produced by using low VOC based inks.

Therefore, the waste paper bin is totally recyclable and fits into the green lifestyle. Objects like this also get the message across to other people. They see what is written on the basket and what it is being used for. Eventually the message will sink in, even though it may take a little more time to convince others that going green is the only way to go.

My Take on the Earth Hour

Come this March 28, the call has been made to join the fight against global warming by not using any electricity for an hour. While the call does seem common have you ever asked yourself, does it really help save the earth and make a difference or are we just saving ourselves an hour of kilowatt consumption?

The environmental situation has grown so bad that global warming seems to be endless. It has covered all areas like energy, pollution and dampened natural resources. While we all want to make the world a better place, the fact remains that it may take more than an hour to help heed the call for the fight against global warming.

The Earth Hour is really more of a mixture for a publicity stunt as well as perhaps start somewhere. But would it matter? The thing is it shouldn’t even be just an hour. An hour can make a difference but it will take more than that to stave off global warming.

But if they really want to make this Earth Hour work, I feel that it should all start from commercial establishments. Asking private home owners to cut off electricity for an hour is easy. But have you ever considered the fact that it is an opportunity for business for people who may be powered off at home yet are somewhere out there having dinner in business establishments?

Perhaps a broader announcement would be good. But simply saying that people should turn off the lights out on March 28 doesn’t really quite cut it.

In the past, the construction of a new golf course required completely ripping up landscapes in order to fit and conform the area to the design and style of the golf course plan. Fortunately, that type of golf course development has been replaced by a more environmentally considerate design.

For instance, take the uninhabited island of Isla Viveros just off the coast of Panama; the entire island is to be turned into the next the big golfing tourist destination. The course has been designed by Jack Nicklaus and is expected to cash something in the region of $300 million, although only four holes are expected to be complete by the middle of 2009.

The question of which is greener, going to the stores or shopping online used to be a very debatable questions with arguments for and against being very strong. But recently there has been a study and the results are stunning.

According to study carried out by researchers at the Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, it turns out that online shopping is greener than visiting the stores in person, in fact it is significantly environmentally friendly in some cases up to twenty four times greener than conventional shopping. This only works with single items, when it comes to food shopping we have to suppose that the debate is still open.

A Different Type Of Flower Pot

A new style of flower pot is being made by Ball Horticultural Company and Summit Plastic Company has announced that they are added more sizes to their new Rice Hull NetPot. This is the plantable flower pot that degrades over time after being planted into the ground.

There are now six sizes available as well as filling trays, but eco friendly gardening is the key here. Which brings up a strange point, we like to buy locally grown produce and we assume that it is organic, that may be so. However, what about all of the tools and materials that the small holders use are they eco friendly or not. Use of these pots and trays would be one step closer to a fully eco friendly and organic farmer.

We Have A Hundred Months To Save The Planet

A hundred months may not sound that long, it is in fact just under eight and half years in earth time, that is not that long at all. It seems that is all we have to save the earth according to Prince Charles while on his ten day visit to South America.

The Prince is there to highlight the problems facing the planet due to climate change, he will be visiting Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and of course, the Galapagos Islands, some people may say that perhaps the Prince should be looking at his own carbon foot print!

However, this is a serious issue, during a recession one of the first things that goes is green living, sales of organic have fallen and households are using more energy because they are staying in more.

Because we cannot always see air, it is difficult to know exactly what we are breathing in. Obviously we can see smoke and fumes, but there are some very unpleasant gases and chemicals around that are invisible.

Air Scale is a tool that can be used to check the air quality. It lets the user know if there are any problems by changing colour; green is clean, blue is ok and red means dirty or run like hell. It is a good idea but can be a little frightening if you are sitting in car stuck in traffic and the Air Scale is red!

At last the eco warrior Captain Planet is set to return, just when our planet could do with an eco hero. The retro eco friendly campaigner will be returning to us, but only through the internet in the the newly launched, “Earth first web site” MNN (The Mother Nature Network).

The animation series will be shown in full length on the network’s website. This is first time the series has been aired in its entirety since the early nineties, when the series was first made. It is a surprise that Captain Planet has not been used before. After all, there were some heavy hitting stars involved like, Martin Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg and Margo Kidder.

This is another entry to get through the final fifty of the Greener Gadgets Design Competition and a good one it is, the Environmental Traffic Light monitors the surrounding area for Co2 levels, humidity, air pressure and others too in order to give people an idea of the air quality at that time.

The post can be erected almost anywhere and it has displays similar to those that pedestrians use to know when it is safe to cross the road. Except these displays show what is in the atmosphere in the surrounding area. This is useful information but the displays are far too small and really, this sort of equipment should place by busy intersections for all to see.

Iran Gets Its First Solar Power Plant

This is a turn up for the books, it seems that while everyone’s backs were turned Iran have been building a serious solar power plant, which use the CSP process, and this is where a parabolic mirror is positioned so that the maximum reflection is pointed towards a tube of water.

This creates steam, which will go on to turn turbines; it is these that generate the electricity. This process has been used in other countries such as Spain, where the climate permits such a system, as this can only work in hot countries with little cloud. These plants however can produce around 20 Mw of power.

Iran Gets Its First Solar Power Plant

Fuji’s Eco-Friendly EnviroMAX Batteries

Batteries will always be in demand even if with the emergence of rechargeable options in the market. The problem is how do you make batteries eco-friendly? Fuji seems to address that problem with the development of the EnviroMAX batteries.

The new batteries are free of mercury, cadmium, and PVC, chemicals cited by the European RoHS initiative as hazardous chemicals to be avoided (it’s unclear whether the new batteries will earn RoHS certification, however). Fuji claims to manufacturer them under strict ISO guidelines too, packaging EnviroMAX batteries in recycled paper and fully recyclable PET plastic.

The real threat of batteries comes in the form of disposal. If batteries are not disposed properly, chances of contracting poisonous chemicals from trashed used batteries will occur. Thank God Fuji has developed these types of batteries.

Well, year 2009 is coming up and one of my resolutions is to go green in anything I buy, including mattresses and bedding products.

Green Inhalers for Asthmatic People

We are familiar with the inhalers that people pull out once their asthma strikes. It normally helps them as far as respiratory issues are concerned and today, we see a lot of these inhalers in the market, normally available at drug stores.

Now asthmatic people may be in for a surprise as there are reported revisions to the traditional asthma inhalers. In fact, starting 2009, they are said to be changing the chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs that harm the earth’s ozone layers. They shall be replaced by more eco-friendly chemical HFA, or hydrofluoroalkane.

“A lot of patients may already have them,” said Dr. Nathanael Horne, of Asthma and Allergy PC and an assistant attending at St. Vincent’s Hospital, which are both located in New York City. “Many doctors already switched their patients over.”

The down side to the switch: The new inhalers cost more, $30 to $50 compared to as little as $5 or $10 for the disappearing generic CFC inhalers, Horne said.

It is quite surprising how a child’s imagination can turn out to be something useful for the needy. That is the case of this 9th grader, Max Wallack, who seems to have a knack of inventing things that come into mind that turn out to be very useful.

His latest idea, satisfying the issue of environmentally concerns while providing some assistance in the form of portable shelter for the homeless was something quite glaring that it is satisfying both issues with one idealistic solution. And it all came from the ideas of a 9 year old!

When Max was in Chicago to accept his prize for inventing the booster step, it bothered him to see homeless people living on the streets. In the years since, he never forgot about that, and it inspired him to create his latest invention: a shelter for the homeless made from discarded materials.

“I kept that image in the back of my mind, thinking I had to do something,” Max says. “I thought I could use some Styrofoam [and plastic] bags, and put them in a dome shape.”

Yahoo has compiled a cool list of the top 5 green jobs in demand now. See it below.

Wind-Energy Developer
In especially high demand are wind-energy developers, who do the front-end work, including finding plots of land for wind farms, collaborating with meteorologists on wind assessments, and working with land owners and local regulatory agencies and power companies.

Wind Construction Project Manager
These positions manage the daily activities of constructing wind farms, such as road work, foundations, collection systems, substation, interconnection, and commissioning.

Sustainability Director
Sustainability directors devise ways for companies to be more environmentally sensitive through such methods as reducing a company’s “carbon footprint.” There’s an internal side of the job that looks holistically at how a company operates and creates ways to boost the bottom line through energy efficiency. Claims that she would never become pregnant may not be entirely true. Nature and environmental conditions may indeed play a minor role but as far as fertile water is concerned, this may certainly go towards the way of being too superstitious. A miracle perhaps?

This time around, even the standard gas-powered home mowers need to watch out as there are new emission rules that will be enforced to lower the emissions that they cause each time home owners decide to have their lawns trimmed.

Beginning in 2011, new gas-powered lawn and garden equipment of less than 25 horsepower will be required to reduce emissions by 35 percent, and all gas-powered recreational boats must reduce emissions by 70 percent in 2010, according to new EPA regulations

Just found a neat review of our green blog, Keetsa on Max Gladwell.com, Max is not real. Well, there is no Max Gladwell, the blog is actually run by a Rob Reed. But who is Rob?

From his site:

Max Gladwell was founded and created by Rob Reed. Rob is a career journalist, entrepreneur, and marketing executive. Most recently, he’s been working on a Web 2.0 startup in the health & green living space. Previously, he helped to launch Conserv Fuel, LA’s first green filling station and the only source of E85 ethanol in Los Angeles. He managed marketing and communications for Willie Nelson’s BioWillie biodiesel brand, launched the Citizen’s School Bus initiative with Julia Roberts, and wrote The Way of the Snowboarder, a book on the history and people of snowboarding. Rob lives in Santa Monica, CA, with his wife and daughter.

Quite clever, i like it. Many book authors use a different name than their birth name, the practice is called using a pen name, ghostwriting, and/ or using an alias. You have to read his interview page, especially the part where Rob/Max answers this question: MG: So where do you and Max Gladwell part ways? Too funny.

He writes on social media, with a tight focus on green social media. He profiles a variety of environment friendly websites, blogs, social networking tools, and the very popular web 2.0 space. Do pay him a visit.

As for the Keetsa profile, Max writes,

The range of content is tremendous. Truly something for everyone in the green world.

UK Government drops eco towns plan

It was a dream of the Prime Minister Gordon Brown to develop eco towns in the UK; this would have been the first major building projects in the country since the 1960’s. However, these plans have been put into limbo simply because it is believed that many of these developments were not green enough.

Originally there were to be around ten of these eco towns, but this has been cut down to around two and even those may not get the go ahead either. This is a significant blow not only for the building of eco friendly projects, but for the UK housing market too.

Nevertheless, thinking up an eco town is one thing, putting it into practice is another with transport, utilities and the established local area. However, there is still a need for new homes and surely, the best way is to build eco friendly new homes rather than the alternative.

Tyres and inner tubes are a nightmare for the environment and yet as with many things that are not good for us or the planet, we really cannot do without them. The solution is to make them into other useful things such as these Zero Cellphone Cases.

Because they are made from inner tubes, that makes the cellphone cases strong and totally waterproof, they are being sold at $25 for the case, $12 for carrying strap and $8 for the cellphone cleaner.

The 2-cycle green engine oil might be the best invention we’ve noticed so far this year.

Green Earth Technologies, creator of organic engine products, has released their new automotive lubricant to its G-Oil line, a 10W-30 that has set a new biodegradability standard. The oil biodegraded over 90% in a speedy 9 days, blowing the 28-day rate of decomposition required by the American Society of Testing Materials out of the water. Pretty impressive.

We hear so much about natural disasters these, and how so weak we all are when it comes to helping out the survivors. Yes we send aid and maybe some cash too, but this doesn’t always have the desired effect.

What the people on the ground need is decent accommodation that is dry and safe, without this it makes no difference how many tons of food are sent over. This is why this prototype for a Mobile Green Disaster Shelter, it is easy to build, light weight and eco friendly, it ticks all of the boxes and therefore could be one of the answers.
