Guffly Adds “Top Guffs” To Its Daily Roster

We told you about Guffly a few months back and how they have a new eco friendly product listed daily on their website. It’s like Woot!, but green.

Well they have recently announced that they’re adding a TOP GUFFS section, as demand for their items has increased and they want to satisfy customers looking for more than just the daily offerings.

The Top Guffs currently include customer favorites like the Buckle Up Tote made from reclaimed seatbelt scraps into a functional and stylish purse, Lego My Recycled Cuff Links made from the favorite childhood toy, and a Recycled Circuit Board Business Card Case that is made from discarded circuit boards. Each of the products is clearly labeled with what makes it eco-friendly, a label earned only after the team has researched the product to prevent greenwashing.

So in addition to the Daily Guff, now you can also enjoy their “Top Guffs” section, with lots of cool unique eco friendly gift products.

Unfortunately their site seems to be down at the moment though, it seems they’re getting loads of traffic. But bookmark the site and visit again in abit, you won’t be disappointed.

Lovely philosophy from FeltWerker on why she uses and chooses recycled wool felt over virgin felt wool.

Feltwerker says she is drawn to recycled wool sweaters because:

Working with recycled sweaters is very inspiring, the colors are so vibrant the texture so nubby and of course repurposed. My goal is to produce functional objects that bring out a soulful response to ooh and ahh and caress. A frequent comment to my flower pins is ‘they look like candy!’

Resale shops are my favorite place to shop and where I find fabulous sweaters for felting.

Sometimes I feel like I am drowning in felt! My goal is to use all of the scraps that I create. It’s definitely a challenge. Help me out by buying scraps. You’ll love them!

As an animal lover, when you use recycled wool, less animals have to go through (what they go through) for the use of their wool. And as an environmentally friendly option, reclaimed wool is easier on the planet when you think of the energy saved by not creating virgin wool.

The cute pillow pictured above is one of FeltWerker’s creations and it features recycled felt wool from a gently used sweater and wool inside to make it nice and plump to lay on. It’s quite adorable and from the looks of it, seems to be well crafted as well.

Cassette tapes are passé and for sure you would be told that they can be recycled to something else. Apparently here is a new output once they are recycled, ties. And they are not just plain wearable ties, they are playable as well. They are designed by Alyce Santoro and Julio Cesar. They are made from 50% colored thread and 50% recorded audio cassette tapes.

The Sonic Fabric Neckties are available from Supermarket in black, dark brown and grey and retail for $90. Check out the video.

Take a look at these amazing sneakers made from recycled metals. They’re not fashion so much as art.

An American artist by the name of Gabriel Dishaw designs the sneaks out of discarded wires, bolts and other small metal bits and pieces. The result is nothing short of brilliant. Each sneaker shoe is molded and designed to bring awareness to the recycling and upcycling movement, as artist David feels that many things can be reused when a tad of creativity and talent are put together.

Well, not quite David. I could muster up all the creativity and talent in my possession and still not come up with as gorgeous a creation as your recycled metal sneakers.

Well there is when you use a solar jacket. Many clothing manufacturers are looking to harness the power of the sun and make their clothing not only great looking, but functional as well.

A solar jacket usually has holes and compartments fitted in strategic locations which allow the placement of either an mp3 player, a digital camera or other small electronic. And then there are built-in solar panels usually on the back of the jacket or sleeves, in the case of the solar jacket pictured above from ZEGNA it’s in the sleeves.

Gomez has teamed up with Generra designer Tom Melillo and Sandra Campos to create a new range of eco-friendly clothing for girls. Gomez plans to call them “Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez” and is being set to come out in stores by Autumn of next year.

To give you a clue on what she wants from the new eco-clothing line, Selena wants them to be easy to dress up or down with fabrics coming from eco-friendly and organic resources.

And for Melissa Hartzel, one lucky African local got a big shot in the arm from his craft, turning old aluminum cans into fashion accessories and hence being paid for it. Handbags and baseball caps were made out of old tin and aluminum and as you can see, they are fine work from recycled efforts. And Old Tin Cans LTD has been making sure that they get their due.

So far, her Web site has sold more than 500 of their items, including tin can bags, hats, vases, and fruit bowls, and purses made from old records and license plates, to customers around the United Kingdom and in Israel, Switzerland, and the United States. At least Hartzel lent a helping hand to these people who really have some neat ideas in mind eh?

The producer of the show is happy to announce that many (though not all) of the designers and artists involved in Portland Fashion Week will go green and offer up eco friendly collections.

I’m going to profile Sweet Skins next, who will be presenting their fall 2010 collection at PFW. They specialize in chic organic clothing.

In Australia a design team by the name of Design By Them have conceptualized seats made using recycled milk jugs.

A flat sheet of recycled material is what these seats are made of. Folded and then hand assembled to form the chair like seat, the small chair is sturdy, UV and water resistant.

The UV and water-resistant stackable stool is the product of Australia-based DesignByThem. Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis, the creative minds behind DesignByThem, collaborated on the design and plan to add a table and shelving to the eco-friendly product line.

She has stayed true to her values by creating hugely popular shoes, bags and clothing made fur-free and leather-free. Apparently a challenge in the fashion industry. She signed up with Gucci to create and promote her cruelty-free fashion line in 2001, but it was a slow go and she did not make a profit till four years later in 2006. Wow! That’s really holding out.

Glad to hear that Stella is doing well, but more importantly that DEMAND is up for her animal-friendly pieces. Kudos to Stella! (and Gucci)

The bracelet is an Etsy exclusive and is hand painted in chartreuse green by the seller. The clasp is adjustable to fit any size wrist, even small ones, like mine.

The seller has other jewelry created with vintage zippers, but this was my favorite. I didn’t care for the necklaces, but these bracelets were quite lovely.

Penny Nash is the brains and heart behind a new eco friendly apparel website named LightenYourCarbonFootprint.com

In Penny’s own words:

“I’ve been reading about the impact humanity is having on the earth for a long time, and I’m disappointed that more hasn’t been done to stop pollution, climate change and species extinction,” said Nash. “Finally I decided to get involved, and that’s when I launched my website,” she added.

Her website focuses mostly on sustainable apparel such as hemp and bamboo for adults, and has plans to introduce the same for infants and teens down the line.

I’ve seen the website and apparel pricing is moderate, however the site itself is truly lacking. It needs a serious design makeover and maybe easier navigation. So a new webmaster or designer is definitely in order.

Emma Watson has partnered with the People Tree brand to deliver a new line of eco-friendly fashion aimed at consumers aged between 16-24. For her part, Watson will be the creative adviser for the brand perhaps weaving her magic this time around in the real world.

The collection will includes knitwear, cotton T-shirts, jersey dresses, poplin skirts and shorts, described by People Tree as “clean, sexy and easy to wear,” and will be available in stores in February 2010.

As eco-fashion continues to grow, at least People Tree has found a niche to concentrate on. And from the looks of it, the Harry Potter sweetheart will have her work cut out for her. But then, if her appearance and wardrobe for the hit movie series is any indication, a lot of teens are sure to be looking forward to what she will have to offer.

She has partnered with Richie Rich and was looking for a suitable venue to launch the new eco-friendly line. Apparently Anderson found it in New Zealand.

Though earlier reports had the line being called “MUSE”, the official name being settled on appears to be “A*MUSE”. The range will reflect her stance on animal rights, and the pair plan to produce a vegan shoe line.

2. Go local – Visit your local beauty boutiques and see what they have to offer. You will be pleasantly surprised at the goodies set out just for you, the local.

3. Go homemade – Did you know pumpkin is great for the skin? As is a variety of fruits. Google natural skin care remedies and you’ll be greeted with many ideas and tips on how to use everyday food for the skin.

4. Go all natural - The old saying goes, “if you can’t pronounce it, it isn’t natural”. So for example, look at the label of your eyeshadow. Are there all sorts of un-pronounceables? If so, it’s time to ditch. Instead look for ingredients you know, it should read like some sort of food item. The more ingredients you can pronounce, the better.

5. Go cruelty-free – Perhaps one of the best ways to green your makeup is to consider makeup products that have not been tested on animals or carry any animal ingredient. A great resource for this is the Leaping Bunny website, here they list, rate and make sure companies keep it animal-free and cruelty-free.

Portabella Mushroom Sandwich Recipe

Ever wanted to try a Portabella mushroom sandwich? In case you’re not familiar with the Portabella mushroom, it’s a huge 4 to 6 inch mushroom that makes for a great vegetarian burger or sandwich.

The mushroom can be sauteed, grilled or roasted. Whether you want to reduce the meat in your diet or simply like to try new things, add the Portabella to your cooking and diet repertoire. It’s tasty (when done right), healthy and can be a quick meal.

Easy Portabella Mushroom Sandwich Recipe

Serves 6

6 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 shallots, minced

1 cup, plus 2 tablespoons olive oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

6 fresh portabella mushrooms (about 1 1/2 pounds), stems trimmed and gills removed

6 round country sour dough rolls, sliced in half

1 1/2 cups crumbled goat cheese

24 marinated sun-dried tomato slices

18 basil leaves

1. In a small bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, garlic, shallots, olive oil, and salt and pepper. Arrange mushroom caps in a single layer in a shallow, nonaluminum dish and pour 1/2 of the marinade over mushrooms. (Reserve the rest.) Cover and marinate 1 hour, turning after 30 minutes.

2. Heat a lightly oiled grill. Remove mushrooms from marinade, place on the hot grill and use a skillet or weight to press down on mushrooms. Sear mushrooms 2 minutes on each side, or until tender. Reserve.

3. Drizzle a tablespoon of reserved dressing on each bread half. Place the mushroom on top of the bread bottom. Layer the goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and basil leaves on the other half. Place the halves together. Cut the sandwich in half, wrap in a sandwich bag or foil until serving.

We approach our work from two angles. We are both searching for found objects to suit specific design program, and continuously harvesting available waste materials to derive concepts from. This recursive, non-linear process is the basis of our flexible methodology and allows us to adapt to material flows and project requirements. Neither mass production nor one-off custom design, our work falls somewhere in between.

In fact the bags are already available online at Target.com but the actual totebags won’t be available till early next year. So you can pre-order but they’re not quite available just yet to wear.

The bags will come in several style choices and will mirror the nine billboards that four New York artists designed. The actual bags will be created by another top fashion icon named Anna Sui and if you want to own a piece of NYC, you can have it for $29.99 and when all 1,600 bags sell out. You’re out of luck.
