Halloween is days away and for sure, kids are dreaming of those sweets and treats which they normally get every year. But since we are in the transition towards shifting to an eco-friendly world, perhaps we can apply candies and sweets to the mix. Why not give green candy (not just the color!) which make use of natural resources and carry less if no preservatives.

Some candy stores are trying to kick off this practice. For example, the NaturalCandyStore.com and local co-ops sell candy that is fair-trade, corn-syrup free, and organic. Seward Co-Op currently has Yummy Earth assorted candies for $5.29 a pound. Yummy Earth makes organic lollipops, candy drops, and gummi bears that are free of chemical colors, artificial flavors, and corn syrup.

These and other eco-friendly practices that include green Halloween costumes can really help in the shift towards eco-friendly practices. But they all have to start somewhere and some groups are doing just that!

White House Wants Green Coffee Cups

Even though the last President set out to get eco friendly coffee cups, the new President wants his staff to find a greener alternative. The paper cups currently used in the White House were sourced around seven years ago, they have a biodegradable insulating coating, but they are not just not green enough.

The White House are looking for a coffee cup of the same nature but with a higher percentage of biodegradability, this type of product does exist but it would be nice to see some figures as to how many paper cups they get though and compare this to using china or plastic cups that can be reused.

Over the past few years the world’s largest restaurant chain have been working on making their world much greener, they have done this by changing the appearance of most of their stores and have made a real effort as to where they by their ingredients from too.

But there is one thing that hurts McDonalds and it makes no difference where they are located either; packaging is a big problem as no matter where you go, there is most likely a discarded wrapper or bag. However, a student Andrew Millar has designed a wrapper that is biodegradable and made from grass paper. Unfortunately, he has not approached McDonalds yet, hopefully he will be doing so and the waste situation is eased slightly.

Is Shopping Online Greener?

The question of which is greener, going to the stores or shopping online used to be a very debatable questions with arguments for and against being very strong. But recently there has been a study and the results are stunning.

According to study carried out by researchers at the Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, it turns out that online shopping is greener than visiting the stores in person, in fact it is significantly environmentally friendly in some cases up to twenty four times greener than conventional shopping. This only works with single items, when it comes to food shopping we have to suppose that the debate is still open.

However, there could be a solution that not only disposes of the used oil; it will also provide around a quarter of the power needed to keep the restaurant going.

VegaWatt is a machine that turns used cooking oil into clean energy and eliminates the need to dispose of the used cooking oil. The machine is about the size of the fridge and uses a filter system; there are no chemicals or fossil fuels used in the process making it a cheap and clean source of energy.

One thing about going green, businesses are bent on bucking the odds to be more environmentally conscious of the things going on around them. And for Yummy Brands, it all starts with the unveiling of their KFC-Taco Bell Branch in Northampton Massachussets. It marks the 11-year-old company’s first attempt to seek green building certification for one of its eateries.

The restaurant is designed according to environmental goals that include cutting energy and water consumption by 30 percent and reducing CO2 emissions. Operations at the new site are also expected to reduce waste and the amount of rubbish sent to landfills; the restaurant composts and recycles other waste, grease and used cooking oil. The company is seeking certification for the restaurant based on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design standards.

A new style of flower pot is being made by Ball Horticultural Company and Summit Plastic Company has announced that they are added more sizes to their new Rice Hull NetPot. This is the plantable flower pot that degrades over time after being planted into the ground.

There are now six sizes available as well as filling trays, but eco friendly gardening is the key here. Which brings up a strange point, we like to buy locally grown produce and we assume that it is organic, that may be so. However, what about all of the tools and materials that the small holders use are they eco friendly or not. Use of these pots and trays would be one step closer to a fully eco friendly and organic farmer.

Kreider Farms has obviously taken the business of egg production and distribution with their new state-of-the-art chicken houses which promise to enhance animal welfare as well as increase food safety. High technology, cleanliness and well-being of their hen sets Kreider Farms apart from other egg producers across the country.

“No other egg producer in the country has such a high percentage of their egg production coming from these state-of-the-art facilities,” said Tom Beachler, Kreider Farms’ vice president of operations. ‘Most egg producers are still operating exclusively out of old-style facilities that are between 20 and 30 years old.’

Three additional state-of-the-art chicken houses are planned at the Manheim location, with openings scheduled for 2009, 2010 and 2011. When completed, approximately 75% of all Kreider Farms egg production will come from the newest and most state-of-the-art egg processing facilities available anywhere in the United States.

Repainting using VOC-free paint is a small and quick thing anyone can do to make their kitchen more healthy. When buying accessories, go local and get creative with the items you choose. Dishware – This is a small step that can lead to big changes. The one thing you are going to want to avoid and or watch out for in your dishware and flatware is LEAD. As for pots and pans, look out for TEFLON, this is the material used to coat pans so they are non-stick. However it has been reported in various established manuals, that this is a toxic material and should be avoided. Try iron and steel.

Cleaning – One easy and relatively inexpensive way to green your kitchen is to focus on the cleaning products you use. Many of the more popular brands of kitchen cleaning products have tons of unnatural chemicals which seep into the air we breathe. Over time this accumulates and is unhealthy for you and your family. Look for products made with all natural ingredients, vegetable ingredients, etc. Target has a wonderful line of eco cleaning products by the name of METHOD. Give those a try.

For most people the humble potato would seem to be eco friendly, after all, it grows in the ground and if cooked from fresh there would not be any reason to think otherwise. However, apparently the potato is not an eco friendly as we first thought because of the resources it uses.

However, researchers from the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee are claiming that they have developed an eco friendly or rather environmentally sound potato that requires less water and fertiliser to grow. The potato has been called the Vales Sovereign and has been called a farming milestone by the supermarket giant Tesco.

Organic and eco-friendly food is what people are trying to look for these days and Mandarin Oriental in cooperation with TRU Organic spirits have unveiled an all-organic cocktail menu in Miami for people who are turning to eco-friendly concoctions.

Two of the tastiest-sounding tipplers are the Mandarin: TRU Organic Vanilla Vodka, organic tangerine juice, brown sugar and a splash of heavy cream (pictured above). And the Basil Melon: TRU Organic Lemon Vodka, melon, organic basil leaves, organic grapefruit juice, simple syrup and seltzer. These, and others, are available at the Hotel’s M Bar and Azul restaurant.

There is more to the greening of the Mandarin’s menus: Covers are fabricated from reclaimed wood, recycled paper, and soy ink. Working with organizations like Sustainable Harvest International, TRU purchases its’ paper products from sustainable sources in managed forests, and plants a tree for every bottle of their organic spirits sold. In order to provide further ecological balance, the lumberjack association has announced that they will encourage members to drink a bottle of organic vodka for every tree cut down.

New Packaging for Eco-friendly Milk

In a change of marketing strategy, UK’s first eco-friendly milk will reportedly change its GreenBottle labeling made of unique concept using recycled office waste paper to create a durable outer container, with a removable inner bag full of milk, supplied by local dairy MaryBelle.

The label design was actually a brainchild by 13-year-olds Dania Brewer and Charlie Besant. These were plucked out by the inventors of GreenBottle and will hit the shelves at Asda in Lowestoft.

A new batch of GreenBottle will be available in Asda at Horn Hill from with Dania and Charlie’s label attached and it is hoped the milk will be rolled out across stores in East Anglia.

A lot of cattle raisers these days turn to different means to raise their cows but for Andrew McGibbon, it is all about feeding them green grass which is a prime source of nutritional value.

“When we sell beef to a family, they can look specifically at that animal and say this is the nutritional data on that beef, so we’ll provide that to them if they wish”, says Andrew.

Another advantage: it’s local. “It’s processed, inspected, packaged, everything, distributed all within 50 miles of Tucson. You can’t get any closer than that,” says Andrew.

Corks were known to seal in the freshness of wine over the years but wine makers shifted towards plastic corks to somehow jazz up wine a bit, particularly to open them easier outside the cork popping hardships that would require people have a trusty cork screw in hand to open them.

While the intent was commendable, plastic is a hot item in the world of eco-friendly practices today. In fact, people are protesting them and now it seems like the wine makers have to do something about it. The solution? Cardboard Tubes.

But the issue of retaining the spirit in the bottles is up and the air. So if they don’t want to shift to these cardboard tubes, does it mean they are going to ignore these pleas?

Don’t be surprised if they figure out something. They always do!

Here is something you can do if you want to be unique this Christmas. While not all people may have extensive use for recycled plastic spoons, if you want to hand out some great gifts and giveaways for kids, here is something you can do that is not available in retail stores.

There are manufacturers out there that make use of little plastic when producing the in-demand disposable needs for special events like parties and gatherings. Here is another way you can use them for, making chocolate covered spoons for kids who are simply suckers for uniquely made chocolate. Here are some tips on how to make them from Examiner.com

1. Buy a package of mini chocolate chips (I used the store brand kind that were on sale.) You could also buy white chocolate.
2. Melt one cup of the mini chocolate chips in the microwave in a glass bowl. Be sure to stir every 30 seconds.
3. Spoon chocolate onto top side of spoon or just dip the whole thing in the bowl.
4. Dip into red, green and white sprinkles or crushed up candy cane bits.
5. Let dry/cool on wax paper. (You can put them into fridge to cool faster if you want.)
6. Tie Christmas themed ribbon onto the center of the spoons.

Dunkin Donuts has been around for some time now and while we have seen them diminish in numbers of outlets, there are some that are still up and about. There is one outlet that has been put up in St. Petersburg, Florida, and it has been touted o be eco-friendly. In what way? Worms.

No they are not using the worms as part of their classic donuts. Rather, they are stored in a solar-powered composter.

All food and beverage waste is converted to fertilizer by a worm-filled, solar-powered composter behind the donut shop.

The worms eat the scraps and the resulting fertilizer is then provided to local farmers.

How do you build a solar cooking oven?

“What you need is 15 cement bricks, mud mixed with straw and two sheets of glass,” said Abu Tawahina. “One sheet is incorporated into the top part of the oven and the other into the front side, and finally a metal sheet is placed at the base of the oven on the inside.”

As a vegetarian i’m always looking into different nutrition products and ingredients. Hemp is one i have heard of many times, but have only tried a few times. Well let me clarify, industrial hemp which is manufactured into food form.

Hemp (the sativa form) from what i’ve read is a plant known to have wonderful nutrient properties, as it is high in fiber, moderately high in protein, and a good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin D.

Protein – 23 grams

Fiber – 35 grams

Vitamin A – 37 IU

Vitamin D – 10 IU

There are many brands of hemp food items including Nutiva, and many uses for hemp oil and hemp seed. So am wondering the following.

As Bernhardt explained in a phone interview last night, he and his partner, both originally from California, had been “messing around with the stuff” for almost two years before they decided to create their line of boards built from alternative materials.

But today, we now see a number of them looking at a new environmental planning stages and this has to do with the necessary power to aid most wine production processes.

For Praire State Winery, they are in the process of applying wind energy to their whole business with the use of wind turbines, another step that can further push them to the ranks of more eco-friendly business establishments.

“We really wanted our winery to be green. It is a big part of our business plan to be green in everything we do,” Rick Mamoser said. “We originally looked at moving our business to a more rural setting to do more green energy but we found this turbine appropriate for in town. It encouraged us to build our business in town rather than move to an open area.”
