Smokers are often told to kick the habit but apparently it is something that is hard to get over. And while tobacco manufacturers have been now placed in the hotseat and deprived of promotional measures as well as distribution, Green Smoke has thought of a great alternative in the form of an electronic cigarette that produces smoke-like vapors instead.

The Green Smoke electronic cigarette consists of two simple parts: a cartridge and a battery unit. The cartridge looks just like the filter on a tobacco cigarette, while the battery is a dead ringer for the white tobacco end of a regular cigarette. Just screw together these two and puff. This activates the heating element, and smokers inhale water steam with nicotine and flavor. Each cartridge is the comparable to a pack of tobacco cigarettes.

If you look at it, this is a great alternative that addresses the growing issue of health and the environment. It may be far from the actual cigarette but the thing here is that toxins which are bad for your health the environment have been taken out to still provide the actual smoking mannerism that smokers have gotten used to. It is worth a try!

Ghent Belgium To Go Vegetarian Once A Week

Interesting story coming from across the pond in Ghent, Belgium. The city announced a few days ago it will go vegetarian once a week because of environmental reasons.

They mention in a news story that civil servants, councillors along with local politicians will be the first to begin the city program, followed by school children in September. That is quite progressive, good for Ghent.

Since the UN last Summer researched and concluded that raising
livestock accounts for more than one-fifth of global gas emissions, the city of Ghent hopes that by going veggie (even if only weekly) will lessen its carbon footprint and help with a growing obesity problem.

It’s exciting to see such progress coming from such a small city as Ghent. Raising animals for food is bad for the planet, for the animals,and is terribly expensive. We salute Ghent and hope other cities nearby follow suit.

Would £2,000 be sufficient enough for you to get a new car in place of your old one? That seems to be the question in the air as the United Kingdom has commenced where cars 10 years and older can be traded in for the car scrappage them at £2,000.

Depending of course on the type of car you will be getting, you just have to do some pencil pushing. New cars don’t come cheap despite the price cuts and discount deals that car manufacturers are undertaking to survive.

“There are so many good deals out there on pre-registered nearly-new stock that actually it’s easier to find a car with a bigger discount under these pre-registered deals than it is under the scrappage scheme,” said Kieran Puffett, editor of Parker’s.

One can’t truly be green and eat meat, the two just don’t go hand in hand. Meat (or the raising of animals for meat) is one of the most destructive practices ever invented.

Animal agriculture and specifically factory farming are
vicious on Mother Earth, not to mention the animals. But since around the 1950’s Americans have been programmed not only to LOVE meat, but to think they NEED it.

We can debate the NEED for meat till the cows come home,but one can’t deny the hell on Earth animal rearing is causing on our planet. One way to combat this eco nightmare and or reduce it, is by reducing or eliminating the consumption of meat.

You can start by reducing it. Phase meat out gradually, why not start with the awesome new initiative over at the Huffington Post site titled “Meatless in May”.

As it sounds, the idea is to not eat meat for one month. One month – can you do it? Sure you can.

Start by reading up on meatless options and yes you do have options, plenty actually. Meat doesn’t have to be the center of each and every entree – think OUTSIDE the box – and you will discover an oasis of delicious, healthy, and fun meal ideas. There’s a vast and impressive array of fruits and veggies available to you right now that when prepared right, and made into imaginative dishes – will excite and delight you. You just need to give it a good ‘ole fashioned try.

Because we cannot always see air, it is difficult to know exactly what we are breathing in. Obviously we can see smoke and fumes, but there are some very unpleasant gases and chemicals around that are invisible.

Air Scale is a tool that can be used to check the air quality. It lets the user know if there are any problems by changing colour; green is clean, blue is ok and red means dirty or run like hell. It is a good idea but can be a little frightening if you are sitting in car stuck in traffic and the Air Scale is red!

This is another entry to get through the final fifty of the Greener Gadgets Design Competition and a good one it is, the Environmental Traffic Light monitors the surrounding area for Co2 levels, humidity, air pressure and others too in order to give people an idea of the air quality at that time.

The post can be erected almost anywhere and it has displays similar to those that pedestrians use to know when it is safe to cross the road. Except these displays show what is in the atmosphere in the surrounding area. This is useful information but the displays are far too small and really, this sort of equipment should place by busy intersections for all to see.

Ok i realize the headline was abit on the dramatic side. But listen to this. Paula Deen hooked up with Smithfield Foods, one of the biggest (and worst) pork manufacturers in the nation.

Her intentions were noble. This is all in the name of charity as the goal was to donate over 25,000 pounds of ham to a local pantry. I can understand her attempt at helping those who are hungry and she gets a nice big fat A for effort. But she could easily have donated loads more food in the form of veggies. Meat is so expensive and such an environmental hazard.

It takes tons less energy and water to produce corn, rice, and other foods than it does to raise animals for meat. When will people realize the many hazards associated with growing meat? Surely Paula has picked up a magazine or two in the last five years, and has been schooled in the matter.

Again i appreciate the intention and motive, but c-mon do you have any idea how many PIGS had to die for this noble act? I will spare you.

But i will tell you this, Smithfield Foods kills 30 million pigs each year. Ouch! That is horrendous.

This time around, even the standard gas-powered home mowers need to watch out as there are new emission rules that will be enforced to lower the emissions that they cause each time home owners decide to have their lawns trimmed.

Beginning in 2011, new gas-powered lawn and garden equipment of less than 25 horsepower will be required to reduce emissions by 35 percent, and all gas-powered recreational boats must reduce emissions by 70 percent in 2010, according to new EPA regulations

Envirofit Cook Stoves

Zero Emission London Cabs in 2012

We all know that among the contributors towards pollution and harmful emissions are public utility vehicles such as cabs all over the world. An immediate solution would be to ticket the or ban them but that would be like taking out majority of the modes of public transportation for people on the go.

With that in mind, Lotus, a known maker of finest speed machines, has vowed to shift their focus on green motoring and are planning eco-friendly taxi cabs roving the streets of London by 2012.

The design will use an electric motor, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. By 2014, Lotus says it’ll be introducing it to other cities.

Testing on the new cars is due to start in the next 18 months, while Lotus also works with Jaguar on a separate project, to create an eco-friendly limousine.

It’s intended that the green limo will crank out carbon dioxide emissions below 120g per kilometre, using a petrol engine and special electric motor.

Oil Prices and Global Warming

Both these occurrences, global warming and the continuing oil price surge have been economic catastrophes that most people have to deal with. It has been getting harder to live in this world today and apparently each effort seems to be getting futile by the day. With these things in mind, where does the government fit in?

There are two ways to look at it. One is to see how government can benefit from it. Additional taxes and of course connecting them with global warming for a justifiable declaration. No one would bother to check in depth although the economists would do their own pencil pushing.

The other is of course the hands-off policy to which the government will wait for everything to settle and then make its move. Either way, the government will benefit while also taking credit from it once the worst is over for these two dilemmas besetting us today.

Our government is jumping aboard the global warming bandwagon in a big way. Ignoring any facts to the contrary, they continue to fuel a juggernaut that will result in more government, more taxes, more ‘crises’ and more useful idiots. Even Republicans are on board, with John McCain turning green with a twist guaranteed to garner liberal votes. He’s proposed a ‘cap and trade’ system (called redistribution of wealth) to help battle climate change. It used to be only liberals who had the hubris to think man can control climate.

Toyota Shows Off iQ in the Market

Japan based automobile tycoon Toyota has recently unveiled its compact 4-seater car, the iQ at the Geneva Auto Show last Tuesday. It is tagged to be the smallest 4-seater car in the world but what people should really take note of it is its ability to run on a small fuel-efficient engine and emit lesser carbon emissions outdoors.

Each unit costs $20,000.00 and is sure to be another hit vehicle from Toyota.

Andrea Formica, the company’s senior vice president for Europe announced that the iQ is the ‘world’s smallest four-seater car’, measuring just 2,985 millimeters long.

To achieve such tight packaging, Toyota’s engineers have come up with a clever cabin system that allows three adults and one child to sit in comfort, despite the iQ’s diminutive, almost Smart car dimensions

Most of us use the public means of transport. This can be either through the subway or buses. Of the two, buses have been criticized for their contribution towards greenhouse gases and pollution. But while many bus operators are trying to remedy this situation, the development of a small fleet of eco-friendly buses are reportedly in the works.

The first batch of eco-friendly buses will be released in Marin Transit District routes after the approval of the purchase of 35-seat hybrid buses. Once they operate, expect an improvement as far as public transport is concerned.

A small fleet of environment-friendly buses will soon be rolling on Marin Transit District routes, after the district board Monday approved plans to purchase seven, 35-seat hybrid buses for $4.3 million.

“Greenhouse gases are treated today as though they can be produced and
emitted without any cost. Green taxes should be introduced for industries and
consumers to establish a visible price for carbon dioxide as a way of slowing
the growth of – and then reducing – emissions,” said Glen Hodgson, Senior
Vice-President and Chief Economist. “A national GHG tax system should be

Apparently, all of us today would agree that global warming has gained quite a head start when it comes towards leading the pack as far as environmental issues are concerned. It is not primarily geared at the weather and what pains we have made from previous years. We just have to suck it up and do our own part in trying to find solutions to the global warming problem.

No country in the world is excluded. We are all experiencing the global warming threat today. With that in mind, it takes more than one person or even a group to overcome this debacle that is beseeching us.

There are tactical minds who will gather together in Honolulu next week to tackle the greenhouse gases and global warming issue. Hopefully they come up with a good resolution to this problem for our sake.

The U.S., the host, is sending Jim Connaughton, White House environmental chief, and Undersecretary of State Paula J. Dobriansky, who headed the U.S. delegation to last month’s talks in Bali.

“We have a very high level of participation,” Connaughton said at a press briefing Friday in Washington.

He said this indicates world leaders support the process as a follow-up to the Bali conference leading to U.N. meetings and the Group of Eight summit on global warming with President George W. Bush and other world leaders in July.

If you haven’t noticed, we have been experiencing strange climate changes all throughout the world today. Cold and warm weather are usually normal for us, but apparently, many of these usual cycles have taken a different route. Just take the past holiday season for one. Normally, we know that it would be cold practically once the month of November sets in. Yet in some places, the climate was unusually warm. The answer? Climate change.

Many of us have become sick due to the abnormal weather in our areas. The best witnesses to these claims are the doctors. They are the ones treating the people and rather than conclude that verbal viruses are the reason, it is obvious that the problem lies solely on the changing weather that we are witnessing. Our bodies are not accustomed to these changes and hence the reason for us being sick at times.

So this is coming from the doctors and physicians all over the world. Address the climate change issue to lessen the number of sick people today.

A group of population health experts is sounding alarm bells about the risk to human health posed by climate change.

And they say the poorest people in the poorest countries will be the worst hit.

In a paper published in the British Medical Journal, they’ve called for doctors and other health professionals to take a leading role in planning for the coming health problems.

How Can You Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

Perhaps this is the foremost thing in the minds of people today. Weird weather and continuous growth of pollution and health-related problems, something has got to be doing all of these things. Global warming is imminent and yet people are saying otherwise? Give me a break.

If it is not global warming then what is the reason behind these problems then? One thing that is for sure, they are all man made. And to get behind them would mean have to be addressed by man himself.

There is no denying global warming is upon us. The question now, how do we deal with it?

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, who started a climate protection movement among the nation’s mayors, called on the federal government Wednesday to “stop ignoring or denying” that there is a global warming problem and to join cities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Nickels predicted that growing public pressure will prompt members of Congress to take up legislation this year to create economic incentives for reducing carbon emissions.

In a world that is primed to solve the growing pollution and gas emissions plaguing regions today, people are looking for alternative modes of transportation which includes developing eco-friendly cars. Among the frontrunners are India based car manufacturer Tata Motors which has offered the acclaimed world’s cheapest car in the market at a price of $2,500.00.

This can be approached in two separate ways.

It is good news since now, people have an option to see what the future holds for them and also to help the growing gas emissions that most cars today are contributing to the welfare of the environment.
Bad news since it will result into traffic and congestion of roads since each person will want one of these cars for their own convenience. Add to that, the emissions produced by these may be lowered but taken all together, you negate the drive to eliminate the issue of pollution in the modern world.

Each new development today has its own share of issues. It all boils down on how people will view them.

The world’s cheapest car, launched this week by India’s Tata Motors, seems to herald a mobility revolution for people in the developing world. Millions of consumers each year could leap virtually overnight from the indignity of two-wheeled motor scooters to the relative luxury of four wheels and a roof.

Tata isn’t alone in trying to profit from the aspirations of populations emerging from relative poverty. Soon there could be plenty of choice, with Renault of France and Nissan of Japan also seeking ways of selling compact cars for $3,000 or less.

In the battle for the greenest Christmas it seems that a certain green vegetable the Brussel sprout is at or near the bottom of the list and this for one rather embossing problem.

Its seems that we humans suffer from the same problem as the cows of the world do, “Gas” and this is one of the worse types Methane, this is considered to be much worse for the planet than Co2 which just goes to say something.

So maybe eating your greens is not such a good thing.

Cap and Trade Gas Emissions

The government is always open to compromises and this includes largely big companies that have trouble controlling their gas emissions. Ever since the Regan era, such compromises such as the “cap and trade” were given to help them go on their way with their business but at the same time take the responsibility on not adding to the woes of environmental issues.

To date, there are still some who have adhered to these policies and not. But to date, thanks to the Clean Air Act released in the 1990’s, the Acid Rain Program released has made wonders in helping address the pollution problem. The Acid Rain program is actually now among the models that have become important in controlling the ever growing issue of gas emissions and global warming.

(Source) While the acid rain initiative was focused on just one pollutant, sulfur dioxide (nitrogen oxides were later added), the new proposals seek to limit carbon dioxide and five other pollutants. The acid rain program focused on electricity producers, while the new efforts would affect utilities, large manufacturers and the transportation sector as well.

“With SO2 (sulfur dioxide ), you are talking about one air pollutant, primarily from one industry, for emissions trading purposes,” said William Fang, deputy general counsel and climate issue director for the Edison Electric Institute, a trade group for utilities. “With greenhouse gases, most of the bills are economy-wide or would focus on about 75 percent of the economy. … You are talking about literally millions of sources.”

So the prices of crude oil prices are continue to rise and while we all know the next thing to follow would be higher oil and gas prices, there are some private companies who are taking advantage of the situation. Not to say that they do not have the right to raise their oil meters, it is just that some are becoming too advanced that has led some economists in the world to conclude that it is becoming and economic sabotage to any region today.

Indeed, it can be deemed as an economic sabotage in the sense that people are pretty much speechless on how to cope up with the continuous rise in oil prices. Some have been monitoring the biofuel development progress while some have resorted to other means of transportation to save on cost.

However, while these are all considered the best alternatives, it should not be a cause for most oil companies to abuse the situation. We all need money but resorting towards oil price hikes at astronomical levels without reason is simply too much.

Most of us really want to live luxuriously and comfortably. Consumers dream of having their own means of transportation and while cars are within their reach, there is another issue that needs to be addressed…pollution and greenhouse gases.

The air we breathe right now is contaminated. We can smell it and that awkward and different smell is the participation of pollution in the usually clean air we breathe. While people are more concerned of living better lives with good transportation, their health may be in jeopardy.

The increase in the number of motor vehicles, industrial and commercial activities, coupled with the rise in construction work in and around the city, is translating into a lot of air and noise pollution for the residents.

All that this much publicized awarding of the Nobel Prize to Al Gore has gotten is commendation for a person that has alarmed the world on the impending disaster which any single person can do if they really care for the environment. But seriously. Gore has been awarded the prize but what has it given the world? Just something to think about?

Perhaps if the prize was given for someone who had indeed done something already then maybe critics will not have something to say. Global warming is still an issue and while the warnings have been sent, nothing concrete has come about.

Sorry to ruin the party, but commendations and citations don’t stop the bleeding. Once solutions and results have been made, then perhaps that is the time to celebrate and lay claim to distinction.

Add another green enhanced product to the growing roster of products that have been transformed into green standards. Adhesives are something that most manufacturers and personal people use in various activities and a lot of critics have hit the raw materials used as a main concern for their green standards compliance. Formaldehyde has been found to be one of the harmful contents that may lead to cancer.

A soy-based adhesive has been developed to take over from the formaldehyde resins and this in turn is expected to reduce the harmful gas emissions. The credit really goes out to Kaichang Li and his colleagues at the Oregon State University.

Greenhouse Gas Issue More Serious than We Think

Forget about what you are seeing and the various comments, reports and articles going around about green gas emissions. It is a well-known fact that this is a world issue that should not be taken lightly. As each year passes, the greenhouse gas issue becomes more serious and even if we do hear about individual efforts to help fight off this impending global disaster, the fact remains, the effort is simply not enough.

It has indeed reached dangerous levels and unless something drastic would be undertaken, chances are it will go beyond dangerous and perhaps catastrophic. Now that is not a good sign for all of us inhabitants.

“We thought we’d be at that threshold within about a decade,” Flannery told Australian television late on Monday.

“We thought we had that much time. But the new data indicates that in about mid-2005 we crossed that threshold,” he said.

“What the report establishes is that the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is already above the threshold that could potentially cause dangerous climate change.”

From a standpoint, car manufacturers may indeed be put in the spot towards key contributors to the ever-growing issue of global warming. While there have been various cases filed against them, lack of sufficient evidence may just twist and turn the tables as quickly as they were concluded.

In fairness, automakers have taken heed of the call to be more green-friendly but this does not happen overnight. It takes time to happen. While a lot of the released vehicles undergo the green standards examination, it cannot be denied that prior released models are perhaps out there and still possess an obvious threat toward global warming.

“One of the principles of tort law is that damages should not be speculative,” Brown said, wondering aloud whether Lockyer could prove “causation” between the automakers’ products and shrinkage in the Sierra snow pack, which was one of Lockyer’s claims.

Once he was elected, however, Brown did the sort of political pirouette for which he was justly famous as governor three decades ago, declaring that the suit was “a solid case and we’re going to pursue it vigorously . . . to prevent the catastrophic consequences of this global warming problem.”

“With the current public, state and congressional focus on global warming and possible solutions,” Brown continued, “this is the right time for the state and the automakers to find cooperative approaches and resolve litigation in a constructive manner.”

It has been something that has gone as far as becoming the supposed savior of rising fuels today. LPG, primarily known to be used as a cooking element in canisters has been offered in the market as an alternative fuel to cars today. The question is if it is safe and how it functions accordingly towards sensitive car engines that may not be fond of such an alternative fuel consumption outside that of standard gasoline and diesel.

There is of course the conversion kit for use of LPG fuel but while the price may be hefty, is it a feasible investment for savings?

Many are hailing it as a good answer to stay away from having to pay stiff prices for the rising oil and gasoline prices. However, its safety and contribution towards the evident environmental needs is another.

Certainly, it is something that needs further assistance. But basing it on how people are approaching the whole LPG issue, will it stick or will just remain a good cooking regimen as it is commonly known today.

Photochemical smog is now within the area of the Japanese region and it is something that has come from China’s continued pollution problem.

Photochemical smog–a type of air pollution considered by many to be a thing of the past–has recently returned stronger than ever.

Experts say this is primarily due to the effects of cross-border pollution coming from China.

The total number of warnings over high-level photochemical smog issued by prefectural and municipal governments in many parts of the country this year had hit 28 as of the end of August–a record high since the smog warning system was launched in 1971.

How To Build Greenhouse Gas Awareness

How many of you visit YouTube for eco-friendly and green information or just to catch a hot new green video everyone is talking about?

The one thing that has always beefed me about YouTube is its lack of categories, and/ or the lack of one being able to narrow down their focus. As i do research and look things up for this and my other blogs, i always am on the look out for that green “category” or “section“. And surprisingly many times in different online media outlets i do find it, but it is not completely mainstream, just yet.

To the rescue comes in a new green video sharing site, called emPivot, that is dedicated to green and eco-friendly videos. This new video site probably won’t be as big as YouTube, but for a certain demographic it is highly welcomed and appreciated. Plus i keep reading in new media journals that niching is a trend that we will see more of as a way for folks to wade through all the info overload.

Female celebrities like Natalie Portman, Chloe Sevigny, and Kyra Sedgwick appear in this minutes long video tooting the benefits of switching from conventional bulbs to the greenhouse gas saving CFL, compact florescent bulbs.

The video also has a few non celebrity faces holding a CFL all around the U.S. The video is pretty light, almost senseless, not much substance goes on in it. While i don’t disagree with the overall message, the video itself seems scattered.

2008 Beijing Olympics: Clear the Air First!

From what has been gathered, many are eagerly awaiting the 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing. With bare some months to go, various criticisms have been solicited regarding the overall healthy environment of Beijing, particularly its worsening pollution problem that may not be entirely good for athletes coming in from various parts of the world.

While Beijing is attempting to reduce the pollution problem in time for the event, many are doubting the feasibility of choice for holding the event in Beijing to date. Containing the pollution problem at this point of time sounds a bit too late. But changing the venue of the Olympics may be a death wish of sorts as it will likely be cancelled due to lack of preparations. Of course this is a remote possibility.

Participating countries may opt not to participate if they feel that the environmental conditions governing Beijing at the moment are indeed becoming hazardous. However, don’t be surprised if you see various athletes wearing face masks to avoid inhaling health risk fumes once the Olympics commence.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be justly rewarded to be green conscious? Well, in this latest move by the B.C. government which offers to as much as $2,000 on fuel efficient hybrid cars, people are getting a feel of just how it is to make that shift to these hybrid and fuel efficient cars.

True enough, such a rewarding option has also helped car manufacturers like Toyota to benefit from this new development. One of the top model hybrid cars of this Japan-based car manufacturing, the Prius, has been the prime target of consumers for their transportation needs today. And mind you, the Prius does not come cheap. One unit alone costs $32,000, not a cheap price to pay for hybrid cars offered for a greener outlook in the world today.

Incentives are known to be good rewards that can entice a market and make them fully aware of the actual intent of governments; that of which is to feel how it is to be rewarded by being green.
