Hospital In Manhattan Gets First Ever Eco Energy Plant

In NewYork, a Manhattan hospital installs first ever eco energy plant.

NYP Hospital switched from traditional coal gas to eco friendly energy in order to provide cleaner air to patients, not to mention save a bundle in annual energy costs. And the yearly (co2 savings) from the co-generation plant will amount to removing 3,600 automobiles off the road.

As for how it works, below in their own words, New York-Presbyterian Hospital explains:

The 7.5-megawatt power plant burns natural gas in a turbine to generate electricity continuously for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Heat from the turbine, which is usually wasted as exhaust gas, is captured and reused to generate steam for heating and cooling.

What about a power outage? The hospital senior VP of facilities development explains that a back-up power source is in place, which would go into effect and not compromise critical patient areas.

We told you about Guffly a few months back and how they have a new eco friendly product listed daily on their website. It’s like Woot!, but green.

Well they have recently announced that they’re adding a TOP GUFFS section, as demand for their items has increased and they want to satisfy customers looking for more than just the daily offerings.

The Top Guffs currently include customer favorites like the Buckle Up Tote made from reclaimed seatbelt scraps into a functional and stylish purse, Lego My Recycled Cuff Links made from the favorite childhood toy, and a Recycled Circuit Board Business Card Case that is made from discarded circuit boards. Each of the products is clearly labeled with what makes it eco-friendly, a label earned only after the team has researched the product to prevent greenwashing.

So in addition to the Daily Guff, now you can also enjoy their “Top Guffs” section, with lots of cool unique eco friendly gift products.

Unfortunately their site seems to be down at the moment though, it seems they’re getting loads of traffic. But bookmark the site and visit again in abit, you won’t be disappointed.

Yes, you read that right. An enterprising company from the Netherlands has managed to come out with a paper USB drive. And recycled paper at that.

The Boardy Paper USB drive is similar in properties to conventional USB drives, but Boardy’s in essence does away with the casing completely. Only paper is used.

Quite unusual, but it works. Well it works in the manufacturing sense.

The Boardy site is pretty bare and not much other info is available, such as price, size, and memory.

Yes, goats. A company by the name of Rent-A-Ruminant rents out the grass eating animals to home and land owners who seek an effective but off the beaten path type of lawn care.

But the service is not cheap or fast. In fact it takes approximately 3 to 5 days to clear through 10,000 square feet of rubbish. And this is with 60 goats. What about goat safety? Well to make sure that the goats are not exposed to anything toxic, a thorough inspection of the area is performed by company managers before any work is started. And according to the source article, an actual person does hang around throughout the “clean up process” to ensure goat safety and to tidy up missed areas.

Detroit Lions Recycle Used Gear To Benefit High Schoolers

The Detroit Lions football team take on high school players with an arsenal of recycled gear.

Each year they donate x number of shoes, cleats and other used football equipment that otherwise would end up in a local landfill. But with the help of their community affairs coordinator Chad Walker they collect countless used gear by placing it in a HUGE box located centrally in their locker room.

When this box fills up, the recycled gear heads to Detroit area high schools and charities. Where countless boys and young men take advantage of the gently used equipment and cleats.

The Detroit Lions have been doing this for approximately seven years and as you can imagine – the goods go toward fulfilling the dreams of the next generation of players. Here’s hoping for another seven years.

Feel free to bring in any old pair of jeans, in any condition and they will get recycled into insulation and used in Habitat For Humanity homes.

They note that the jeans literally can be in any condition – torn, worn or scorned – the jeans will be accepted. But you better hurry, as the deadline to drop off your old denim is tomorrow, Tuesday November 3rd.

In El Paso, Texas students and faculty erect a mural made from recycled marble tiles.

University of New Mexico at Albuquerque students and artist Roberto Salas wanted to create art that showed “there are a bunch of ways to be an artist”. Loosely translated, this means that cool art can be made using upcycled materials.

The 200 foot long wall mural was completed in a week and finished just a few days ago, all made using reclaimed marble tiles.

2010 US Census Questionnaire Paper To Be Recycled

The government has announced that it will recycle 600 million US Census questionnaires.

This is the first year that the US Census has begun a recycling effort, no doubt with Obama behind the White House, this initiative will go as planned and reach its goal.

What is the goal? To send the questionnaires to the national recycling plant in Indiana and sell the material to contractors. The proceeds will then go towards federal childcare facilities all over the country.

With 600 million questionnaires, this effort should raise quite abit of money.

Halloween is days away and for sure, kids are dreaming of those sweets and treats which they normally get every year. But since we are in the transition towards shifting to an eco-friendly world, perhaps we can apply candies and sweets to the mix. Why not give green candy (not just the color!) which make use of natural resources and carry less if no preservatives.

Some candy stores are trying to kick off this practice. For example, the NaturalCandyStore.com and local co-ops sell candy that is fair-trade, corn-syrup free, and organic. Seward Co-Op currently has Yummy Earth assorted candies for $5.29 a pound. Yummy Earth makes organic lollipops, candy drops, and gummi bears that are free of chemical colors, artificial flavors, and corn syrup.

These and other eco-friendly practices that include green Halloween costumes can really help in the shift towards eco-friendly practices. But they all have to start somewhere and some groups are doing just that!

An American artist by the name of Gabriel Dishaw designs the sneaks out of discarded wires, bolts and other small metal bits and pieces. The result is nothing short of brilliant. Each sneaker shoe is molded and designed to bring awareness to the recycling and upcycling movement, as artist David feels that many things can be reused when a tad of creativity and talent are put together.

Well, not quite David. I could muster up all the creativity and talent in my possession and still not come up with as gorgeous a creation as your recycled metal sneakers.

The Cool iREV Party Boat Has Electric Motor

GreenMuze reports on an oddly shaped all electric party boat called the iREV.

The donut shaped party vessel known as the iREV is powered by a 2.5 hp electric motor and batteries that last up to 10 hours when fully charged.

The 360 degree floating vessel seats ten people under cover of an enormous umbrella and features a host of festive options including a low smoke BBQ grill, sound system and satellite radio.

Why is GreenMuze reporting this in October when everyone is out of the water? Not sure, but I suppose those in South America or tropical regions can still knock themselves out with this luxury sustainable water vessel. And it’s pretty cool even if it is October.

The retail price on the iREV is $24,000.

But this is not 1988, it is 2009 and graffiti is now eco friendly. Yes graffiti as drawn by artist Jesse Graves is still transfixed on city walls and streets, but it’s made from a mud base, not toxic spray paint.

Jesse Graves is leading the eco graffiti movement and through his website, he’s encouraging other street artists to use mud graffiti for their art. How? By giving step by step instructions on how to make it and use it. Safely, easily and cheaply.

With mud graffiti, artists get the same results and are able to spread their messages, but in an earth friendly way.

Southwest claims it takes environmental stewardship very seriously and today announced the introduction of a test GREEN plane to its fleet.

This eco friendly plane is a 737-700 model and will feature a series of sustainable features including:

reduced weight through various materials improvement
introduction of two new alternative leather products, such as e-leather and IZIT leather, two synthetics which prove to be durable but are both a mixture of man made technology with discarded leather scraps
recycled carpeting in the cabin
canvas life vest pouches, instead of metal
a lighter foam in the back of airline seats which reduces weight
and an overhaul and improvement of the Southwest onboard recycling program

Environmental Stewardship is a responsibility Southwest takes seriously, and efficient operations are the hallmark of our Company and the foundation of our environmental commitment. Over the decades, Southwest has been at the
forefront of such efficiencies as paperless tickets, quick turnarounds, installation of winglets, and, more recently; the installation of fleet-wide advanced avionics. This focus on efficiency not only makes good business sense, it is the right thing to do.

It seems Southwest is dead set on being the sustainable airline leader with its eco friendly and forward thinking.

Let’s just hope they can keep the prices low as well. And as of this writing, no word on where or when this GREEN plane will debut.

The “Floating House” idea came from actor Brad Pitt during the post-Katrina New Orleans disaster. And now that the Philippines seems to be technically in the same boat, these floating houses may very well be suited. Pitt and his Make It Right (MIR) foundation are building these floating houses made from eco-friendly materials and it seems that to aid the Filipinos devastated by Typhoon Ondoy, this idea may just work.

The floating houses are built with hollow concrete cubes underneath for buoyancy, while electricity and water are pumped through flexible pipes. Each house costs about $310,000. Perhaps the only thing here right now is affordability. Many of the Filipino people practically lost everything. Do I hear the government stepping in? No personal (graft and corruption mindsets) interests please!

ABC Fine Wine Takes Cork Recycling To New Heights

In Tampa Florida a fine wine store is designing one of the largest cork recycling initiatives in the state. Why cork? Cork is a natural product that can be recycled into many things, such as floor and wall tiles, car engine gaskets, and even fishing rod handles.

Companies such as TerraCycle and Yemm & Hart seek out recycled cork to create these products and then sell the products to large retailers like Target, and other office supply stores or direct online via their website.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits has set up drop off boxes in each of their 1,500 locations across the state of Florida so that anyone can come in and drop off their wine corks. And many have done just that, but in large quantities. As mentioned on their cork recycling page, a guest delivered approximately 1,400 corks to their Winter Park store on September 22nd, 2009. That’s a whole lotta corks.

In addition to keeping the corks out of landfils, ABC donates .02 per cork to several charities they work with. A rep from ABC mentioned that it may not seem like alot, “but if ABC stores collect just ten corks each day in each store, that’s more than $10,000 a year in donations”.

So with the help of consumers who bring back their used corks, to Terra Cycle who processes the corks and turns them into upcycled beautiful things, ABC is hoping to make a BIG difference in Florida…and beyond.

DIY Winter Herb Garden

Here is something decorative for the home. The Winter Herb Garden makes it possible to enjoy herbs all year long and are actually grown organically. This is actually a do it yourself process where you gather the materials needed such as:

Open pollienated heirloom seeds
Organic Compost
Crushed Egg Shells
Cooled Coffee, tea water or water from cooking vegetables
Eco-friendly planters

Lay out the planters and fill each pot with compost. Add seeds and top them off with the crushed egg shells. Water the seeds with tea, pasta or vegetable water, and place the planters on whichever windowsill will provide the most sunlight during the winter months. If you want to monitor which of your plants are growing, you can label them with paper or by writing them popsicle sticks.

Once the plants have grown in, begin snipping a few leaves off each plant throughout the week. Use the herbs in soups, salads and other meal components. Many herbs can also be used in tea.

Qatar Airways Launches Natural Gas Commercial Jet

Qatar Airways has defied the odds and perhaps flown a jet like no other airline has yet dared. This is what sums up the new development that Qatar Airways has officially flown the first commercial jet that runs on natural gas. This alternative fuel discovery was able to power an Airbus A340-600 from London Gatwick that landed in the Qatari capital, Doha.

From the look of it, this may be a good sign for the aviation sector. Unless some kinks come out, you can bet that natural gas may yet be the answer to the fuel woes of the transport industry. Then again, this is just one flight and other issues like impact on the engines and the volume of use need to be observed and recorded further.

Solar Decathlon In Washington Proves University Students Are On The Cutting Edge Of GREEN Design

Twenty university student teams descended onto the National Mall in Washington DC over the weekend to showcase their entry into the Solar Decathlon competition.

Each student team had to create an energy efficient solar powered home that was both functional and aesthetically alluring. The student entries came from all over the US, including the University of Louisiana and University of Puerto Rico. Winners were announced in several categories over the weekend as well, and some of the winners proved that university students are on the cutting edge of clean energy and GREEN design.

Check out the entry (pictured above) from Team California who won in the category of architecture. That eco house is amazing!

First place in the architecture competition went to Team California, for this practical and elegant house roofed in 48 solar panels. Even on a cloudy day, the panels provide 75 percent of the energy needed to run the house, and on a sunny day the panels generate a whopping 150 percent of what is needed.

LG has just announced that they have a solar powered ebook reader in development.

This is big news in the growing ebook industry. And as you may or may not know Amazon has an ebook reader called the Kindle and Sony has the Sony reader, then there is the recent announcement from Barnes & Noble that they have a color ebook reader due out next month.

The LG solar reader is the green model of the bunch and promises about a days worth of reading from about 4 hours of sunlight. Yes, it could be argued that all ebook readers are green, but this one goes just a tad further with its built-in solar cell.

This is exciting news because the more competitors that come out with their own e-reader, the lower the prices will get.

Everything from the stage the models saunter on to the lighting overhead and the fashion itself will be sustainable for 2009.

The producer of the show is happy to announce that many (though not all) of the designers and artists involved in Portland Fashion Week will go green and offer up eco friendly collections.

I’m going to profile Sweet Skins next, who will be presenting their fall 2010 collection at PFW. They specialize in chic organic clothing.

Portland Fashion Week 2009 Is All About Sustainability

First The Samsung Reclaim, Now The Samsung Blue Earth

In a continuing line of eco friendly phones from Samsung, we now have the new Samsung Blue Earth.

This tablet style touchscreen phone is the latest GREEN model from Samsung, and it features a screen made from recycled water bottles, a neat solar panel on the back which Samsung claims can get about 15 minutes of talk time after an hour in the sun, and cool extra features as well besides the eco stuff, such as GPS capability and an impressive 3mp camera.

The Samsung Blue Earth is not available in the US, but might very well be if other similar GREEN Samsung devices sell well. Currently the Samsumg Reclaim is their only US marketed eco friendly phone, which we wrote about a few weeks ago.

Domaine Carneros a premium lux brand based in the Napa Valley area of California have recently announced that their line of sparkling wines are all made with no animal by product, making it officially vegan friendly.

The variety profiled above is the Brut Rose, an organic sparkling wine perfect for the upcoming holiday celebrations. It’s also listed as a top ten on wine.com under the sparkling wine category.

Are you pontificating on whether ebook readers, such as the hugely popular Kindle (from Amazon) are more eco friendly than books?

Then wonder no more as a new study out from the Cleantech Group has the an answer. In this recent study the Kindle is viewed as MORE eco friendly than paper books because it negates its Co2 in its first year.

According to the study, the Kindle usually offsets the carbon emitted in its creation within the first year. Interesting study. Of course, this topic is debatable and will continue to be for some time, as some ardent book lovers view ebook readers as blasphemy and technophiles view archaic books as necessary and more relevant.

Whatever your view on the matter, ebook readers aren’t going anywhere. (and neither are books)

We have seen a lot of folding bikes in the news lately but this one takes the cake. This compact folding bike goes as for as making use of foldable wheels which makes it easier to pack. The bike bodies are easy to fold, owing to the fact that they are made from several pieces and at least now, you don’t have to worry about how a wheel would be folded. The wheel is made up of six modules which make it folded and be smaller. For now it remains to be a concept but given enough time and testing, it should hit the market officially and get its share of customers.

Congressional Record Now Printed On Recycled Paper

Did you know that the daily Congressional Record is now printed on recycled paper?

According to house speaker Nancy Pelosi an average of 1.4 million pounds of greenhouse gases each year are now avoided by printing the massive Congressional Record on recycled sheets of paper, versus virgin paper. And massive is putting it mildly. Every single day that Congress is in session, 4,100 copies of the statements are printed out. Wowza!

As the writer of the article I’m sourcing so cleverly put it, “why in this digital age do we even have a PRINTED version of the Congressional Record?” He goes on to answer because Congress needs to keep (for posterity reasons) physical proof of what they say and what takes place on the floor. In other words, a digitized version would be open to hackers, alterations, etc.

Isn’t that possible with a PRINTED version as well? Well not the hacking part, but the alteration part. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before it goes strictly digital, as paper (i’m sure) will one day be a thing of the past.

Note there is an online version of the Congressional record, but it’s accompanied by the printed version as well.

Is Urine Next New Alternative Energy? (Seriously!)

New report from MSNBC discusses how university scientists in Ohio have devised new technology which takes urine and turns it into cheap hydrogen fuel cells.

Yes! urine. Everything from cars, homes to electronic devices can be powered up using this new alternative source of energy. And in as early as six months.

Some examples of how urine power (a/k/a pee power) could be used:

“A fuel cell, urine-powered vehicle could theoretically travel 90 miles per gallon”.

“The waste products from say a chicken farm could be used to produce the energy needed to run the farm,” said John Stickney, a chemist and professor at the University of Georgia.

“Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel.”

Interesting development from the field of environmental science. We’ll see when and how this develops. Will keep you posted as always.

She has stayed true to her values by creating hugely popular shoes, bags and clothing made fur-free and leather-free. Apparently a challenge in the fashion industry. She signed up with Gucci to create and promote her cruelty-free fashion line in 2001, but it was a slow go and she did not make a profit till four years later in 2006. Wow! That’s really holding out.

Glad to hear that Stella is doing well, but more importantly that DEMAND is up for her animal-friendly pieces. Kudos to Stella! (and Gucci)

A couple has turned their ordinary Cobblestone Park, South Carolina home into an extraordinary green space, coupled with possible gold status LEED certification.

No stone was left unturned in the remodel and redesign of the Switzer home. The biggest challenge Mike and Maggie say they had in the idea for their eco friendly home was finding the right architect and builder.

But they ended up hiring an architect they had worked with before and off it went. Everything from the usual solar panels on the roof to bamboo floors was added to the home, but also much more.

See below some of other cool sustainable features they implemented throughout the home:

solar water heating system
carpet made from recycled plastic bottles
irrigation run off water system to collect rain water
drought-resistant plants instead of grass
natural light is strategically used throughout the home
insulation in crawl space keeps bamboo floors cool
energy-efficient appliances in kitchen
reclaimed wood used for outdoor club house
pavers on roof made from recycled tires
recycled rubber mulch
low-flow showerheads in bathroom
outdoor solar lights
reclaimed brick was used for the patio
countertops in kitchen made from recycled glass
and more

They say the home at $590,000 and 4,000 square feet did not end up costing much more than a non-green home in the same area. Plus they’ll save annually on electricity and other utility bills. Well done!

In Penny’s own words:

“I’ve been reading about the impact humanity is having on the earth for a long time, and I’m disappointed that more hasn’t been done to stop pollution, climate change and species extinction,” said Nash. “Finally I decided to get involved, and that’s when I launched my website,” she added.

Her website focuses mostly on sustainable apparel such as hemp and bamboo for adults, and has plans to introduce the same for infants and teens down the line.

I’ve seen the website and apparel pricing is moderate, however the site itself is truly lacking. It needs a serious design makeover and maybe easier navigation. So a new webmaster or designer is definitely in order.

But now, here is one that should come close to breach that need, the Solar-Powered Bamboo Dollhouse.

The dollhouse is made of fast-growing bamboo that is treated with light water-based stain and polished with bee-wax. The large solar panel housed in the roof collects enough energy to power 5 LEDs, of which 3 are in the media room, and one in each of two rooms on the first floor. The whole house features 9 different rooms including a spiral staircase. All of the furniture has been made of bamboo too.

Tropical Storm “Ondoy” Causes Floods in the Philippines

In case you don’t know, the Philippines is always a prime candidate for floods each time the rainy season hits. The usual regions are prepared for it but certainly not the places such as the National Capital Region where flooding was manageable. That is not the case today when tropical storm “Ondoy” brought havoc to the Philippines, leaving lots of people stranded and people in low areas climbing to the roofs to avoid the watery wrath of this storm.

No one forecasted that this tropical depression would be this bad. The rains poured all night until today causing monstrous traffic jams and people fleeing for higher ground. In fact a lot of people went to their home’s rooftops for dryer ground, groping in the dark since power was shut down in the flood-ravaged cities of Manila and its neighboring provinces.

Mobile communication was erratic and many people are asking for help. The sudden need for rafts and rubber boats were being clamored along with prayers that the rains would stop. This day, the Filipino community get a courtesy call on what global warming and climate change is really all about. After these floods subside, will the Filipino people finally wake up to reality that these events are just a glimpse of what global warming can do if it is not addressed soon? This is a wakeup call and certainly eyes have been opened.

Make It Right Foundation Receives Honor For Green Housing

The popular foundation Make It Right, built by the equally popular actor Brad Pitt has received an honor by the US Green Building Council for its outstanding achievement in eco friendly housing.

Brad Pitt was also in New York recently at the Clinton Global Initiative to discuss his current and future plans for his Make It Right Foundation, which aims to rebuild a ward in New Orleans.

So far 13 of 150 affordable and sustainable homes have been built (with some costing only $35 a month in electricity to run), and now future plans call for eco duplex housing.

Brad Pitt and his NOLA foundation have brought a great deal of awareness in the GREEN building movement and he’s helped alot of people out, but it’s still out of reach for the average American.

Here’s hoping that other celebrities with deep pockets such as Pitt initiative similar projects across the country.

For those of you mothers and fathers out there with babies, there’s some great baby products from BabyEarth that you might be interested in.

Besides being eco-friendly, a lot of BabyEarth’s products feature organic materials that may be less harmful to your newborn/growing baby.

As someone who has gone countlessly in and out of BabiesRUS retail stores, I come to regret that I did not find such a great store earlier.

I don’t know how many other green baby stores are out there (if you know, please leave in the comments line to be helpful to other readers) but BabyEarth carries a big line of great eco-baby products including this ERGO Baby carrier which features organic cotton made without harsh chemicals.

For those of you still deciding on a crib and baby mattress for your next newborn, you might also want to consider the organic mattress from BabyEarth, which goes for just $59. I know I paid a lot more for non-organic mattress and I still can’t believe there’s better deal out there. (regrets…sigh…) And yes, I would certainly love to see Keetsa organic baby mattresses too one day.

My favorite section of BabyEarth is of course the Eco-Friendly toys section. Believe it or not, I do highly enjoy kid’s toys even though I am way past the age. I think babies let you re-live your early life, which I highly believe is true.

Not all products at BabyEarth are eco-friendly and organic (as far as I know) but most of their products are and you can access those on their Eco-Friendly and Organic section here.

We liked their green products so much, we even put a banner recommending BabyEarth at the top of our blog.

Anyways, I will definitely have to order some toys and other stuff to see for myself if they are really that good and eco-friendly. I have no doubt about it but it always helps to know things in person. (Perhaps I will contact BabyEarth for some samples we can feature on this blog…arrr…and get some free toys for my baby.)

Farmers Market Comes To The White House

President Obama has been granted a wish. To “have a little farmers market near the White House”.

An outdoor farmers market will be held every Thursday from September 17th till October 29 and will carry veggies, fruits, meat, eggs, cheese and baked goods. The White House market will be organized by non-profit group Fresh Farm Markets and will be open to the public. President Obama says this is not only a great way for residents to have access to good local food, but also become a huge source of revenue for local farmers.

If I lived anywhere near DC, I would totally patronize the White House farmer’s market. Kudos to the Obama’s for encouraging healthy eating.

Farmers Market Comes To The White House

Purple Wastewater Hydrants Coming To South Jersey

Get ready! The purple fire hydrants are coming. In the city of Cape May in South Jersey plans are underway to recycle wastewater and to distinguish this water source from public hydrants, purple hydrants will be used.

It’s no joke. They are outlets for the county MUA water reuse project, part of a $2.5-million project, funded in part by the state Department of Environmental Protection to recycle highly-purified wastewater that will be diverted from ocean dispersion, and used for irrigation purposes, at the County Park Zoo to wash animal cages, and at Middle Township Davies Recreation Complex athletic fields.

Purple Wastewater Hydrants Coming To South Jersey

Railroad workers in Columbia, Missouri recently repaired a railroad crossing with recycled panels.

The recycled railroad panels were sourced from an old crossing which were still in good condition. This was as much a financial decision as it was an earth friendly one, since the city ended up saving roughly $5,000 by reusing versus buying entirely new railroad crossing panels.

They ended up with a fixed crossing, a whopping $5,000 savings and karma from Mother Earth. All in a days worth in the city of Columbia Missouri.

Railroad Repaired With Recycled Crossing Panels

White House Seeking LEED Certification

President Barack Obama has always been a champion for the green cause and has made the White House a rather sustainable place with the introduction of many eco friendly features.

Most notably this Summer the White House veggie garden a/k/a victory garden was all the news in that it was major step forward in promoting healthy and local eating. The media gobbled it up and when the news broke out it put the first lady at the head of the table.

Now the White House is making news again as it seeks LEED certification. Gaining this most notable recognition would mean the White House is on the cutting-edge of green building design.

White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) spokesperson, Christine Glunz, says the effort to get the White House to LEED certification includes energy and water systems as well as waste. She believes it is vital to consider toxicity and life-cycle when making purchases for facilities. CEQ is looking to reduce the carbon footprint of the White House by implementing computerized energy management systems, automatic light sensors that turn off in unoccupied rooms and low-flow water valves. Paints and sealers with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), biodegradable cleaners and recycled equipment will all be used by White House groundskeepers and engineers, according to a White House spokesperson. Window films that will lower UV rays and save energy will also be added.

Expect to hear more on the White House LEED certification in the coming weeks.

In Largo Florida a city contest is underway to solicit art made out of recycled materials, the Recycled Innovations Contest.

But they stipulate that the art has to be functional, as opposed to just something that one would hang on the wall. Contest is open to residents with online photo submissions due by October 10th. Voting begins on October 15th and winners will be announced on America Recycle’s Day which is November 15th.

Well now you can have a piece and even cooler than that is you can have the piece turned into a recycled billboard totebag.

But how you ask? Target. In a deliciously creative move, giant eco friendly retailer Target has partnered up with the City of New York to advertise on one of their massive billboards, and then have the art recycled into gorgeous totebags.

In fact the bags are already available online at Target.com but the actual totebags won’t be available till early next year. So you can pre-order but they’re not quite available just yet to wear.

The bags will come in several style choices and will mirror the nine billboards that four New York artists designed. The actual bags will be created by another top fashion icon named Anna Sui and if you want to own a piece of NYC, you can have it for $29.99 and when all 1,600 bags sell out. You’re out of luck.

Recycle Glass Week Runs September 21-27

Glass Recycling Week is coming up in a few weeks and many glass manufacturing companies (with the help from the Glass Packaging Institute) will be holding several awareness events.

GPI spokesperson Kristen LeKander said by creating more awareness about the environmental benefits of glass container recycling, GPI members hope to help the glass container industry reach a nationwide goal of 50 percent recycled content in the manufacture of new glass bottles and jars by 2013. Doubling the U.S. glass container recycling rate (28 percent in 2007) would allow manufacturers to use 50 percent recycled glass to make new glass containers, saving enough energy to power 21,978 homes for one year and removing 181,550 tons of waste from landfills every month.

Chocolate Powered Race Car To Debut At Brands Hatch

At Brands Hatch in Kent a chocolate-powered car will make its debut and race away at 170 mph.

Titled the Formula Three Car this chocolate-powered race car is like no other, it has a steering wheel made from recycled carrot waste, body panels made from old airplanes, a recycled BMW diesel engine, and goes from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. Wowza!

In test drives, the car has already reached a top speed of 135mph. At Brands Hatch, the engineers hope to achieve 150mph. At race speed, the car manages a fuel efficiency of 35 miles per gallon.

The chocolate-powered car will be racing for the first time at Brands Hatch in Kent on October 17th. Check your local listings for showtime.
