Here is something decorative for the home. The Winter Herb Garden makes it possible to enjoy herbs all year long and are actually grown organically. This is actually a do it yourself process where you gather the materials needed such as:

1. Open pollienated heirloom seeds
2. Organic Compost
3. Crushed Egg Shells
4. Cooled Coffee, tea water or water from cooking vegetables
5. Eco-friendly planters

Lay out the planters and fill each pot with compost. Add seeds and top them off with the crushed egg shells. Water the seeds with tea, pasta or vegetable water, and place the planters on whichever windowsill will provide the most sunlight during the winter months. If you want to monitor which of your plants are growing, you can label them with paper or by writing them popsicle sticks.

Once the plants have grown in, begin snipping a few leaves off each plant throughout the week. Use the herbs in soups, salads and other meal components. Many herbs can also be used in tea.

Once school starts for some students, they may be surprised to find new desks carrying a modern design and made of 100% recyclable polyethylene to be waiting for them when they hit their classrooms. These new student desks were made by QProducts, offering the QDesk which is expected to offers students an important lesson for the future.

“The QDesk will offer students an important lesson about sustainable design to promote their environmental stewardship in and out of the classroom. We are doing our part, if everybody takes an action, even a little one, we can procure a better planet for our children,” said Benedetto Lombardo, CEO.

The RideShare Rewards program is an incentive program for drive-alone commuters to try carpooling. Rideshare Rewards pays new carpoolers up to $100 in gas gift cards.

$100 is alot and you can imagine how far that could go as far as vehicle fuel is concerned. New carpoolers register at 511.org by clicking on the “Rideshare” link. Throughout a 90-day period, participants submit online commute logs to earn up to $100 in Rideshare Rewards. Now that doesn’t seem so hard and looks like it will be a big boost for people wary of a down economy and rising prices.

The design is by Mario Cuccinella Architects from Italy, and in a way, they look very similar to those buildings that have been built from unused shipping containers. The difference being that the design for the outside areas with linking bridges and open areas gives a sense of open living. Sure, these hundred square feet are small, but if this complex were in the centre of a city that would be expected.

Many say that this is the year to get married. And while many brides-to-be are anxiously awaiting what type of dress to wear, it may be well to consider using alternative materials for their wedding gowns. A paper wedding dress designed by a student at Gray’s school of art is to dawn the catwalk at a prestigious bridal awards ceremony. Christina McIntosh’s eco-friendly design has been shortlisted in the 2009 Bridal Buyer Awards.

Christina’s design, entitled “A Paper Promise”, was inspired by ideas of an eco-friendly future.
After a lot of consideration she decided to find a material that was as recyclable as paper.

Tyvek is an extremely versatile material which looks just like paper but is much more durable and is often used in the industrial and medical packaging industry.

The innovative idea even incorporates origami flowers.

To emphasize that a green wedding doesn’t have to be outside of a couple’s budget, the eleven year old art studio has expanded their do-it-yourself offerings to include programs as well as invitations, and has kept their DIY kits and most of their you-assemble versions at 2008 prices.

To encourage use of the do-it-yourself kits, Twisted Limb is holding a contest for DIY customers who send in photos of their completed invitations. Entries will be posted on the company’s blog and Facebook page. Staff members will pick their favorite from every ten DIY kits to receive $100 worth of handmade 100% recycled paper.

Today this thinking has changed and young forward thinking designers are planning the Green Island project replacing concrete and asphalt with green grass. If only it was that easy! Depending on design, we see a lot of people trying out some kind of design based on materials used for their home. Some may turn to rocks and stones while others try to rough them up a big. But perhaps this new material made of recycled gypsum can be a proper home design aspect up for consideration. The material has been christened as GraniteCrete.

GraniteCrete is a combination of pre-consumer recycled aggregate, gypsum by-product, fine clays and colorant. It costs 1/3rd less than concrete, and it’s supposed to age better and be less likely to develop cracks. It’s designed to look more like a natural path than other materials such as concrete, brick pavers, and asphalt.

GraniteCrete doesn’t contain any oils, synthetic polymers, emulsions or plastics, and it is made from pre-consumer recycled mining by-product. Also the material is “absolutely porous, addressing storm-water and heat island environmental concerns and yielding high LEED points in up to three categories of the LEED rating system.”

Designers from New York have designed these temporary floating habitats, and they plan to launch the finished article sometime during 2009. These floating islands will be built from materials from junk yards, recycled wood, metal, plastic and fabric. They will get power from solar panels and wind turbines. They can also be connected to build communities if required.

The “functional floor art” is created using fast-growing timber that has been planted specifically for harvesting, rather than timber from the rain forest or from old-growth forests. Raw materials are selected using non-toxic and recycled materials whenever possible, according to the company.

New York based architecture & media company Simone Giostra & Partners, have been designing curtain walls for over 12 years and in association with Arup, the support of German manufacturers Schueco and SunWays, and the assistance of Chinese solar company Suntech, have developed a new technology for laminating photovoltaic cells in a glass curtain wall. Architect, Simone Giostra says he was inspired by the ‘everchanging experience’ of the seascape, and that he wanted to replicate it in some way.

Here are some eco-friendly home tips you can follow:

1. Schedule an annual routine checkup for your heating and cooling equipment to keep the system running as efficiently as possible, and check the air filter each month to see if it needs to be replaced.
2. Seal cracks around windows and doors with caulk or weather stripping to prevent conditioned air from escaping.
3. Install a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature at certain times of the day, automatically regulating the temperature when you’re away.
4. Consider replacing an air conditioner that is more than 15 years old with a newer, more efficient model, such as the Dave Lennox Signature® Collection XC21 Air Conditioner, which is ENERGY STAR® qualified and may reduce annual energy bills by hundreds of dollars, compared to a standard air conditioner.
5. Add extra insulation to the attic, which will help prevent your home’s heating and cooling system from having to work harder to regulate the indoor temperature.
6. Request an independent indoor air quality test for your home from a qualified home heating and cooling professional to identify potential sources of indoor pollution and other contaminants, such as chemical vapors, and airborne particles like pollen, dust and pet dander.
7. Store common household chemicals and cleaning supplies in a tightly sealed container or outside of the home to reduce harmful vapors from spreading into the air you breathe.
8. Avoid burning incense and candles with lead-core wicks, which can release contaminants and potentially harmful chemicals into the air.
9. Decrease dust and dirt in the home by cleaning with nontoxic, natural household cleaners, such as baking soda, cornstarch or white vinegar, and using a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which will trap small particles like dust that others recirculate back into the air.
10. Consider using a whole-home air purification system, such as the Lennox PureAir system or Healthy Climate 16 media filter, which is installed into your home’s heating and cooling ductwork. These systems are much more effective at eliminating airborne contaminants than portable room air cleaners and don’t produce ozone, which is a known lung irritant.

The £74,000 hand-crafted wooden spheres are constructed using boat building techniques and are coated in fibreglass, making them waterproof and robust.

They have a fully equipped kitchen, including a microwave, fridge and sink. The rest of the interior, including loft beds and bronze doors can be custom ordered.

Of all the housing that the Jimmy Carter Project has built, these will be the first to have “green building elements” to them, and will feature solar panels, energy-saving windows, and drought-resistant landscaping.

The homes are being built in L.A. because there is dire need there for affordable housing, as one in four families of four, only make between $20,000 and $40,000 annually, which keeps many out of housing.

Green housing benefits everyone, as it helps the environment and lets residents save big annually on water and energy bills.

The goats according to the owner, are placed up on the roof in the morning via a ramp and then brought down around 5pm or so. The roof has a full grass lawn and it even gets mowed and manicured like a regular lawn.

I would imagine the goats love the room, sun, attention, and outdoor air. The tourists can’t get enough of them, as they take photos and stare at the animals before and after their Swedish meals.

I just hope the sweet goats aren’t part of the “menu”.

“Resellers will get marketing collateral and funding to rebrand the packages as their own. They need to be green themselves so we will also offer each VAR a datacentre assessment of their business so they can show customers they’re not just talking the talk, they’re walking the walk,” said Greenham.
