Many say that this is the year to get married. And while many brides-to-be are anxiously awaiting what type of dress to wear, it may be well to consider using alternative materials for their wedding gowns. Actually, these days we see the evolution of the wedding paraphernalia. And one notable material being used is that of the paper dress.

A paper wedding dress designed by a student at Gray’s school of art is to dawn the catwalk at a prestigious bridal awards ceremony. Christina McIntosh’s eco-friendly design has been shortlisted in the 2009 Bridal Buyer Awards.

Christina’s design, entitled “A Paper Promise”, was inspired by ideas of an eco-friendly future.
After a lot of consideration she decided to find a material that was as recyclable as paper.

Tyvek is an extremely versatile material which looks just like paper but is much more durable and is often used in the industrial and medical packaging industry.

The innovative idea even incorporates origami flowers.

Getting married this year? One thing that you may need to address is the matter of invitations to send out. And since most people are turning towards invitations made from eco-friendly materials, here are some new designs you can check out from Twisted Limb Paperworks.

Twisted Limb Paperworks, one of the first recycled invitation companies in the nation, recently updated its website and catalog to address customers’ need to save money during the recession. To emphasize that a green wedding doesn’t have to be outside of a couple’s budget, the eleven year old art studio has expanded their do-it-yourself offerings to include programs as well as invitations, and has kept their DIY kits and most of their you-assemble versions at 2008 prices.

To encourage use of the do-it-yourself kits, Twisted Limb is holding a contest for DIY customers who send in photos of their completed invitations. Entries will be posted on the company’s blog and Facebook page. Staff members will pick their favorite from every ten DIY kits to receive $100 worth of handmade 100% recycled paper.

You save on cost and are also starting a whole new wave of fashion trends with what your creative mind can do.

Now that her own eco wedding is over, Marsh is helping other brides and grooms by holding the first Eco Wedding & Lifestyle Show in Toronto, which brings together everything from shoe companies to floral designers.

“There are more and more sustainable and organic fabrics out there and sourcing them has become easier for designers,” Marsh says. “Also, having multiple pieces to your wedding outfit will allow you to wear and reuse the top with different bottoms later.”
If a light-coloured dress is made from natural fabrics, Marsh suggests getting a professional to dye it so you can wear it to another event later on.

The one thing that has always beefed me about YouTube is its lack of categories, and/ or the lack of one being able to narrow down their focus. As i do research and look things up for this and my other blogs, i always am on the look out for that green “category” or “section“. And surprisingly many times in different online media outlets i do find it, but it is not completely mainstream, just yet.

To the rescue comes in a new green video sharing site, called emPivot, that is dedicated to green and eco-friendly videos. This new video site probably won’t be as big as YouTube, but for a certain demographic it is highly welcomed and appreciated. Plus i keep reading in new media journals that niching is a trend that we will see more of as a way for folks to wade through all the info overload.

Some of the green categories at emPivot include:
Green Building, Nature and Conservation, Food & Health for the Home, Travel, Energy & Climate, Community Development, and more.
