How are these companies green?

GoodAdvocado is a small hosting company that is 100% carbon neutral and also plants 1 tree for every new account. GoodAdvocado would be good choice for a small business owner who need good customer service since most small hosting companies have faster customer-service in general. I do really like the fact that they plant 1 tree for every new website created, it would be even better if they could put up some pictures of that.

At $4.99, this is probably the cheapest green hosting you are going to get.

HostPapa is another good choice for green hosting. They use 100% green energy sources, here’s an except of how they do it:

After an energy audit by an outside provider to calculate our total electrical energy consumption from traditional sources, HostPapa purchased “green energy tags” or certificates from a certified green energy supplier. That supplier calculates the total energy consumption of our operation and uses their suppliers of green energy to pump in 100% equivalent energy back into the power grid. This effectively cuts down on the carbon dioxide-producing (CO2) energy that we normally would have required from non-green energy sources.

EthicalHost donates 10% of our pre-tax profits to social and environmental organizations. They also use 100% wind power through energy companies Vision Quest and the Pembina Institute.

ThinkHost is another company that use power of the wind and sun to power their servers. Here’s some things they do beyond their own business:

Probably most of you have heard of DreamHost as they are a pretty big hosting company well known in the hosting industry. Dreamhost is an employee-run hosting company and they even claim to use recyclable coffee cups, which is a good thing.

Here’s an excerpt of how they are green:

Putting a price on carbon output is just one way to help make the world a better place. It’s a first step towards true energy sustainability. Organizations large and small are constantly working on reducing their environmental emissions. When they do so a neutral third party then steps in to verify the reduction and issues what are known as “Renewable Energy Credits”.

SolarEnergyHost uses 100% carbon-free solar power for all their servers. I do like the fact that this company uses 100% solar power, power of the sun under one roof.

Should you go with green hosting?

Oh definitely, if you are running/starting a small business, you will need to setup some kind of website. These hosts are more eco-friendly and green than most regular hosting companies and I don’t see why not you shouldn’t support these green businesses.

Just found a neat review of our green blog, Keetsa on Max Gladwell.com, Max is not real. Well, there is no Max Gladwell, the blog is actually run by a Rob Reed. But who is Rob?

From his site:

Max Gladwell was founded and created by Rob Reed. Rob is a career journalist, entrepreneur, and marketing executive. Most recently, he’s been working on a Web 2.0 startup in the health & green living space. Previously, he helped to launch Conserv Fuel, LA’s first green filling station and the only source of E85 ethanol in Los Angeles. He managed marketing and communications for Willie Nelson’s BioWillie biodiesel brand, launched the Citizen’s School Bus initiative with Julia Roberts, and wrote The Way of the Snowboarder, a book on the history and people of snowboarding. Rob lives in Santa Monica, CA, with his wife and daughter.

Quite clever, i like it. Many book authors use a different name than their birth name, the practice is called using a pen name, ghostwriting, and/ or using an alias. You have to read his interview page, especially the part where Rob/Max answers this question: MG: So where do you and Max Gladwell part ways? Too funny.

He writes on social media, with a tight focus on green social media. He profiles a variety of environment friendly websites, blogs, social networking tools, and the very popular web 2.0 space. Do pay him a visit.

As for the Keetsa profile, Max writes,

Green Living Tips for a Greener World

The real solution towards helping our world get back on its feet and provide the lost luster and reliability is to start green living traditions that have been so far the talk of the town these days. There are various practices of green living that people can turn to and apparently we have an idea of what they are.

It all starts from home and in this case, parenting. We can make a difference by living green and here are some good tips that can help us get started.

Stop buying water in plastic bottles. What comes out of your tap is excellent quality and you’re already paying for it (like, it’s kind of free.)

Buy less stuff. Just say no. Reject the Power of Cute.

Buy secondhand stuff. Check out consignment shops, Craig’s List and Freecycle.

Save on your energy bill: turn off lights (your father was right!), run your laundry drier at night (or better yet, hang it out, spring is coming!!)

Shop the bulk bins. Most things cost less, and are fresher because you buy only what you need.

Raid your attic (or your Mom’s) – classic toys, books and clothes with personal memories to boot.

Switch to a smaller garbage can for motivation to toss less and recycle more.

Buy produce that is in season, it’s less expensive.

Find toys around the house instead of buying them. Instead of a plastic playdough set, I give Banana a garlic press and a cake frosting kit to make dough creations. Instead of buying a big beach bag full of pails, I grab funnels, tupperware, and garden tools for the beach.

Instead of going to the movies, out to dinner or buying yourself a Wii, sit back, put your feet up.

Shame on me for not having visited Ecorazzi within the last few weeks, they have a new look, and it looks good.

They have re-designed their site, added some new features, but still serving up their usual juicy green gossip. For those of you that aren’t too familiar with Ecorazzi, they are a blog that focuses on the latest from green celebs. They cover everything from what green celebs wear, what they drive, and how they are eco sensitive, to who is NOT green and drives around in giant gaz-guzzling hummers, jets around spreading carbon emissions, and which celebrities are sadly green challenged.

I love Ecorazzi, they are a fun blog and they update several times daily (like Keetsa) if you love reading about green celebs, you will love Ecorazzi. Go check’em out.

Being a Oscar and Noble prize winning ex Vice President of the United States is bound to get you noticed, so it is no surprise that blog that Al Gore has called Climate Crisis, has been hacked by an ad that is selling certain tablets.

The blog that was using an old and very vulnerable version of wordpress had not been updated since Sept 15^th 2006!! So it was really sitting there asking for it, I wonder if he needs a new writer to take it for him!
