It is a magazine and an activity book rolled into one. Building a child’s intellect and craving for some form of activity has long been a problem for parents. They would normally give them a coloring book or any educational toy to satisfy that urge. But with the Okido magazine, not only does it come in different editions, it is a better way to aid children with their use of recycled paper to which kids can do as they wish such as write or color it.

We don’t normally expect our kids to treat these activities seriously. They are in a learning and fascination stage. So rather than waste paper, Okido magazine offers all of these in one binded publication.

‘Why should young children have to conform to being either fairies or builders?’ asks Sophie Dauvois, 46, co-founder of Okido with Rachel Ortas, 48. ‘And we didn’t want to treat them like little consumers.’ Most importantly, they’ve also targeted the parents. ‘We want them to have a good time together, looking at the magazine, so it was very much about trying to find a style that would please both generations.’

Even the comic makers are getting into the eco-friendly act. If you are a constant reader of Archie then perhaps Betty and Veronica are familiar names to you. But this time around, the new comic spectacular is not about fighting over Archie but rather to help promote eco-friendliness through tips and ideas like green shopping, fashion and activities. A definite must have for all eco-friendly readers and of course the legendary Archie comic fans.

Dialog is believable, and Betty and Veronica and their supporting characters all ring true to long established personalities. But don’t ask me about the nuances of wearing a bikini to the beach, or doing my nails, or flirting appropriately with the new hunk in town.

How many of you visit YouTube for eco-friendly and green information or just to catch a hot new green video everyone is talking about?

The one thing that has always beefed me about YouTube is its lack of categories, and/ or the lack of one being able to narrow down their focus. As i do research and look things up for this and my other blogs, i always am on the look out for that green “category” or “section“. And surprisingly many times in different online media outlets i do find it, but it is not completely mainstream, just yet.

To the rescue comes in a new green video sharing site, called emPivot, that is dedicated to green and eco-friendly videos. This new video site probably won’t be as big as YouTube, but for a certain demographic it is highly welcomed and appreciated. Plus i keep reading in new media journals that niching is a trend that we will see more of as a way for folks to wade through all the info overload.

Green Building, Nature and Conservation, Food & Health for the Home, Travel, Energy & Climate, Community Development, and more.

Going green starts at home and the benefits from participating and turning to green technology and practices will surely benefit any home today. Just think of it. A lot of the green issues come from wasted energy that powers most residential homes today. Wasted power and energy not only becomes a problem for people who are thinking of going conservation and climate changes, but also the issue of rising electric bills as well.

But going green does not come cheap. Some may have to shed out extra money to implement the green-friendly household today. Instead of looking at the extra cash outlay, it would be best to look at it as a whole. You may be spending extra money, but you are helping make the world safer and cleaner to live in. Now that is going green with the greens.

This is a really nice book, that has been put together using vegetable based inks, recycled paper from post consumer sources hat have come from Oakland, and in fact the whole book is completely eco friendly.

The book is a combination of drawings, lists, note taking and or course origami, which has been dived into three useful sections, with two sets of mini to do lists and some very original origami patterns on the back of the pages so that when you have finished with whatever you were doing, you can tear the page out and fold into a special origami paper model.

Published by Island Press, in 2004, and written by career advisors at Environmental Careers Organization, The ECO Guide to Careers That Make a Difference, is an excellent primer and guide for those interested in pursuing ecological studies. The guide covers “salary trends, case studies, interviews with professionals working in various fields, sample job titles, relevant organizations, current issues, and more” for many different types of environmental careers.

In doing research for this entry, i came across a section of the ECO website (eco stories and photos) where eco students and professionals discuss their entry into environmental jobs and how they secured their current careers (see eco-intern excerpt below). If you are looking for more information on an environmental career, a visit to the ECO website should prove to be a good starting point. Happy Job Hunting.

Cameron Diaz wrote an “how-to” guide to living an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Cameron herself says

The book will offer over 700 solutions to everyday life, from travel to beauty products, to household and sporting products – every aspect of your life that you can go to and say, how I can do this better?

‘It tells you, if you’re consuming the way that you’re consuming currently, what it costs the planet. And then, if you consume in this more ecologically-friendly way, what you save the planet. And then, what you can do to follow through with that.

‘It’s as simple as changing one light bulb. If everybody in America just changed one lightbulb in their homes, it’s equivalent to taking out a whole fleet of cars from the street for four months – something as crazy like that.

While I like that celebrities are taking the initiative to use their star power for good, it really bugs me when they try to take on the role of “expert.” Because, as enthusiastic as Cameron is, I don’t think she’s the best girl to explain stuff.

The book will also Ellen DeGeneres, Robert Redford, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Martha Stewart, Tyra Banks, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Tiki Barber, Owen Wilson, and Justin Timberlake.

In June’s Issue of Interview magazine, there is an article on a-list stars under 30 to watch, and in this a-list are two up and coming eco-activists, Kelly Cox and Ben Jervey. Kelly, 25 years old, is listed for the work she is promoting through her site, ItsYourNature.org which is compelling and propelling that difficult to reach 18 to 34 year olds demographic to the Natural Resources Defense Council and she is doing with a hip and rockstar attitude. Kudos for Kelly.The other eco-activist under 30 profiled is New Yorker Ben, 28, who has published “The Big Green Apple-Your Guide To Eco-Friendly Living in New York City”

A green living guide for the younger set, he goes beyong the basics and succeeds in showing others how to minimize their carbon footprints and in the process has re-branded environmentalism for hipsters in his New York. Nice to see such young talent in the eco-sphere recognized. The book has received much praise and press, here is a recent review excerpt from grist.org, “happily, Jervey goes beyond mere shopping tips, packing Apple with divergent info — from a breakdown of the city’s recycling rules to a recipe for nontoxic toilet-bowl cleaner — that helps make it a go-to green-living guide for New Yorkers”.

Your home is probably the most un-greenest place there is, not I volume because factories and other types plants produce many tons of co2 every day, but per person, our home use up quite large amount of co2, we leave TV’s on standby and virtually any else that we can get away with like cell phone charging etc, it just goes on and on, so what can we do about it? All the time we get conflicting information, we should this and that, but do our energy bills ever drop so significantly that we notice? I would say not really, so even by taking notice of what we are hearing are these actions actually helping?

Well to find out there is a new book out titled “Your Green Home” this offers information on how to turn your home into a green living machine, you can go as far as you wish, making changes that may not even make a massive impact on your life, or your home, sounds good to me!

Green Book: 100 Mile Diet

When some people want to green their diet, they go vegan, free-range, vegetarian or local. The 100 Mile diet is based on the premise that the most environmentally friendly way to eat is to only consume products that were grown within a hundred mile radius of your home.

Guess what? This is hard! Especially if you live in a place with changing seasons, harsh environments and cold winters.

In one instance, Alisa Smith and J.B Mackinnon (the authors) write

Call me naive, but I never knew that flour would be struck from our 100-Mile Diet. Wheat products are just so ubiquitous, “the staff of life,” that I had hazily imagined the stuff must be grown everywhere. But of course: I had never seen a field of wheat anywhere close to Vancouver, and my mental images of late-afternoon light falling on golden fields of grain were all from my childhood on the Canadian prairies. What I was able to find was Anita’s Organic Grain & Flour Mill, about 60 miles up the Fraser River valley. I called, and learned that Anita’s nearest grain suppliers were at least 800 miles away by road. She sounded sorry for me. Would it be a year until I tasted a pie?

The Hundred Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating chronicles a Canadian couple’s attempt at following this diet for an entire year. It’s a fantastic, thought-provoking book that shows that sometimes being green is hard, being inventive is rewarding, and being green, well, it can’t be beat.

Al Gore’s New Book: The Assault on Reason

Al Gore’s new book The Assault on Reason examines the Western political landscape and its inability to collaborate and to solve global problems.

According to the Washington Post, the book’s editor, Scott Moyers, describes the book to be about how “the public arena has grown more hostile to reason,” and how solving problems such as global warming is impeded by a political culture with a pervasive “unwillingness to let facts drive decisions.”

It looks like it will be a thoughtful and provocative piece that will raise a lot of questions, about combating climate change and governmental policies, from America’s favorite losing politician.

The Assault on Reason will be released May 22, 2007.

An Inconvenient Truth for Kids!

Al Gore has updated and adapted his “An Inconvenient Truth” (the book which accompanies the movie!) for the younger generation. The 128-page version is called “An Inconvenient Truth: Adapted for a New Generation” is much more problem-solving focused and much less Gore-focused than both the film and first companion-book.

(Do you really think the 11 and up crowd would have followed the 2000 presidential election? Or really care Gore’s dad ran a tobacco farm?)

The New York Times writes

What remains is most of the “good parts” of the movie: enough geoscience to explain the basics of climate change, and a travelogue of parts of the world where global warming either poses a threat or (Gore suggests) has already taken hold. The beleaguered polar bears are here. So are shrinking glaciers in Switzerland and atop Mount Kilimanjaro, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and deteriorating coral reefs. The main culprit is carbon dioxide; the solution, a grab bag of technical fixes. “We have everything we need to begin solving the climate crisis,” the book concludes hopefully.

The science, as far as it goes, is well supported, but some foibles remain from the film. Gore pegs recent hot spells and extreme weather like Hurricane Katrina to global warming a lot more confidently than most climate scientists are ready to do. Many experts suspect that the recent run of hot summers is due to global warming combined with an upward swing in natural temperature fluctuations. A swing back could cool things off for a while, even as overall warming continues. Gore is also mighty optimistic about the ease of reining in humanity’s appetite for carbon-spewing combustion.

Additionally, the Times wonders if such a book is even necessary, given the success — and widespread use of the DVD in classrooms — of the accompanying film.

While I think the book might not be necessary, can anyone blame Gore for trying to get this very important message to as many generations as possible? Additionally, a book might fit into school curricula a little easy than a 90-minute movie.
