Toyota To Donate One Tree for Each Car Sold in April

The need for more trees has been called on for some time now and it seems Toyota of South Florida has not forgotten that. In fact, they have announced that each car they sold for April will be equivalent to one tree to be donated to the America Forests to help address the lack of trees today.

For the record, Toyota of South Florida sold 310 cars meaning that they will be donating 310 trees to American Forests, the world leader in planting trees for environmental restoration. Now this eco-friendly initiative should be something that environmentalists will surely praise. We are all aware that trees have been dwindling in numbers due to illegal logging and chopping and hopefully this effort translates into something better for the environmental needs today.

Cars sold in April in honor of Earth Day included the Corolla, the Camry, the Yaris, the Matrix, the Solara, and the Scion XD which are all vehicles available at Toyota of South Florida that provide more than 30 highway miles per gallon.

The designs were so rich and provocative, I was convinced that I had chanced upon a whole new cornucopia of eco-chic style. Call it an auction or a matter of performing fair trade, Freecycle can be any of it. It is actually a concept that we see today, getting rid of old stuff and trading or getting new unwanted things through a diverse network where you can share and even consider it an auction of sorts.

In short, rather than throw your old stuff out the garbage can, why not offer it and see if other people may be interested in it. The good thing about the Freecycle concept is that it is totally free. All you have to do is sign with a local group and post messages and you are on your way.

Not only are you helping the environment, you are getting considerable savings in the process as well. Who knows what you can find there!

If you haven’t already come across Freecycle, the online recycling network – one of the biggest green initiatives of the past decade – it is a global network of message boards, with more than 450 groups in the UK. The beauty of it is that it transforms one person’s trash into another’s treasure.

You sign up to your local group, where you can post messages to say what you’re offering, or looking for. No money changes hands and it’s up to the person who wants an item to collect it, so you don’t have to stress about how you’re going to heave an unwanted futon out of your home.

However, it is too expensive to be insured and thus comes with its own personal bodyguard.

Mazda Unveils Kazamai Concept Car

Lighter is fuel-efficient as far as the car manufacturers of the soon to be unveiled Mazda Kazamai are concerned. Made up largely of plastic finish from the exteriors all the way to the engine compartment, the concept car from Mazda provides a glimpse of the future cars that will be offered in the market.

With its lightweight and aerodynamic concept, a 30% improvement in fuel consumption is expected once this car begins manufacturing. The target date is 2011 so watch out for it!

The Kazamai features plastic bumpers, panels and engine cover, as well as aluminium and aluminium alloys for its bonnet, chassis and engine block. It’s 100kg lighter than a comparable current-production model like the Kuga.

The Kazamai is fitted with a next-generation version of the 2.0-litre petrol engine as used in the CX-7, with variable valve control, new combustion control system and new catalytic converter, and improved thermal efficiency, as well as the next-generation six-speed automatic gearbox.

Material girl Madonna never ceases to amaze the people as she always becomes the center of controversy without her knowing it. Or is she? Well apparently after her 50th birthday, life goes on as far as rendering concerts around the world and while she is gearing up for her next one in Cardiff, Wales, the controversial diva is not spared from how she intends to hold another hit concert.

The group says on its web site that Madonna’s 49-date sojourn will be manned by 250 staff members, including nine wardrobe assistants, 12 seamstresses, a personal trainer and a masseuse. And she isnt’ travelling light. She’ll be packing 30 wardrobe trunks and the tour’s massive stage set will follow her around the world.

The group estimates that Madonna and her entourage will generate more than 1,500 tons of carbon emissions. John Buckley, a spokesman for the group, says Madonna’s management could have done a lot more to safeguard the environment.

To Madonna, it may not matter. But considering her stature, perhaps it would be best to give her carbon footprint trail a second look. She should know by now that the world is watching considering her fame since she made it big and being eco-friendly should be on the top of her list!

Without question, the way that e-tickets are being defined right now (electronic tickets that can be done via sending over a cellular phone) to replace the usual ticketing mediums we have traditionally heard of is something that may take some time to iron out. While it is quite commendable to address the usual ticketing procedures that events make use of for control, using technological devices such as cellular phones seems to be far off from happening.

For one thing, people will always find a way. Loopholes in addressing these methods are certainly something that any geek would try to overcome. Text-messaging is a great recourse but unless you develop a proper medium to avoid fraudulent acts such as fabricating messages to look like authentic e-tickets, it is doubtful to be used soon.

Paperless tickets are an eco-friendly, new version of the electronic ticket. Soon, tickets will be delivered via cell phones. Several problems regarding this new technology are still being smoothed out.

A panel of executives addressed some of the merits and disadvantages of using hard vs. paperless tickets. While paperless tickets would definitely be the environmentally progressive way to go, hard tickets will never actually disappear forever. Some people without computers and cell phones or those who want a copy of their tickets as a souvenir ensure the continued use of hard tickets for the future.

E-Tickets Still Way Off!

The G8 Summit is More than a Gathering

As we all know by now, the G8 Summit at the summit’s International Media Center in Rusutsumura is underway and to create the right impression and mood, don’t think that this event is simply about debating and discussing the governing problems the world has to deal with today as far as climate change and global warming is concerned.

On hand as well are some eco-friendly ideas and gadgets that are placed to get attention. Also, what better way to address the G8 summit than to use eco-friendly fuel cell buses and hybrid or electric cars.

A social worker of Rusutsumura, who took a test ride in the car, said: “It was so quiet and comfortable. Compared with my regular small car, it was a paradise.”

Another vehicle available for test driving was Toyota’s Personal Mobility i-Real, a lithium ion battery-powered vehicle that operates something like a chair on wheels, with cruising and walking modes.

Constructed based on the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) principle, the International Media Center itself incorporates such environmental technologies as a snow cooling system, solar panels, green walls and other materials.

With that said, hopefully we can get something productive and ideal out of it all.

The Fourth of July is just three days away and you can bet that most people are figuring out how to celebrate this annual event in the most eco-friendly way possible. For sure, fireworks will be the first in mind. But are there any eco-friendly fireworks within reach?

The answer here is coloring agents. We are all amazed at the fireworks display because of color and light. The usual harmful elements are potassium perchlorate which is a known element in pyrotechnics. So taking that out and using another compound in the form of strontium-based oxidants may help provide eco-friendly firework solutions that people will be looking for come this Friday during the regular Fourth of July celebration.

The C&EN article also warns us that coloring agents used during fireworks could be friendlier to the planet. “The other area in which pyrotechnics could improve from an environmental standpoint is their use of coloring agents. To achieve colored fireworks and flares, pyrotechnic makers employ metals or metal compounds that emit light in the visible spectrum. Red hues come from strontium, sodium glows yellow, barium burns green, and blues and greens come from copper. At one time, mercury and lead compounds were used as colorants, but they were phased out long ago. Ironically, the modern pyrotechnic components that could use some “greening” are the barium compounds that give fireworks and flares their green color.”

Scheduled local events such as festivals or “fiestas” as they are referred to in places like the Philippines often signal a period of eating, celebrating and fun. But while many of us simply want to focus on the “fun” part, there are ways to hold them while at the same time preserving the eco-friendly practices we are hearing today.

Some people are used to using the normal plastics that often go as decorations or containers for food. But in places like this one in the Philippines, it only shows you can hold these festivals without leaving a trail of waste behind you after they are all over.

“Barangay Tambo is right in promoting the use of creative fiesta “arko” made of biodegradable materials in lieu of modern buntings made from thin plastic bags, packaging leftovers and product ads. Brighton in the UK is to hold their first sustainable eco festival called the Green Wave Festival. It will be held in the largest green space in the city, Preston Park and will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday the 5^th and 6^th of July 2008 the festival will be open from 11 am to 5 pm.

The park will be split up into zones, like Wellbeing, Transport, Recycling, Water, Energy, Science, Earth, Music, and Schools and Youth Zones. Not forgetting that visitors will need to eat there will also be a fresh produce market.

Trash Fashion Show this Earth Day

We are witness to a lot of fashion shows in our age and in line with the go green movement, a trash fashion show was recently conducted at the Moore College of Arts and Design which featured more than twenty eco-friendly fashions by Moore’s Basic Design students with garments made from recycled and reused items.

If you think of it, you can really make something out of trash if you really want to. They are the same materials and while we often want better quality consumer goods, there are some materials that we can really reuse if we want to.

The Trash Fashion Show is the final project for the Basics Design class taught by Jack Thompson, professor of fine arts 3D and basics. Timed for the same week as Earth Day, the event has students constructing garments using items such as electrical tape, soy packets, shower curtains, used candy wrappers, phone wire and old CDs.

Some may call the Blue Alert by Greenpeace as fictitious but it can happen if our current situations are any indication. Global warming works both ways. It is melting the ice caps and also causing problems as far as trying to survive the abnormal temperature we are experiencing anywhere today. With due emphasis on the first issue, the continuous rise in temperature can be likened to melting ice in our refrigerators. Every year there is a 5 degree increase in temperature and if the polar ice caps are any indication, it is not only the creatures up there who will have problems. All of us are.

Ice turns to water and once that happens, we can see that the very land we are stepping on will slowly be whittled down due to excess fluids. So with nothing to step on, where do we go? So if you see the polar bears and penguins up there having nothing to set foot on, just wait a couple of years more. You may find yourself in the very same situation.

According to a report titled Blue Alert by Greenpeace, if present trends are any indication, there will be a five-degree increase in temperature over the next hundred years.

This will submerge large areas and displace around fifty million people in India alone. A policy change, the report says, can still avert a two-degree rise in less than a decade.

Popular Science has named Portland, Oregon “THE GREENEST CITY” in the nation.

Coming in second was San Francsico. Portland was chosen because of its “energy practices, transporation systems, recycling rate, and green building practices”.

Portland also has been named, ”best airport, best festival (the Rose Festival), top honors for travel destination, cooking and restaurants, fitness, bicycling to work, green building practices, livability, independent movie-making, clean air, and recently historic building preservation”.

Portland, Oregon is the place to see and visit in 2008.

New Breed of Pandas Helps Save Dying Species

Pandas have been known to be among the endangered species of animals today. While they are slowly known to be nearing extinction, the good news from China is that there are 35 new panda cubs that have been bred and saved thanks to the breeding techniques employed by the Breeding Techniques for the Giant Panda in China.

Chengdu – Thirty-one giant panda cubs were born worldwide this year and 25 have survived, according to Zhang Zhihe, director of the Chinese Committee of Breeding Techniques for the Giant Panda.

Zhang made the remarks on Monday during the opening ceremony of the five-day 18th Annual Meeting of the Chinese Committee of Breeding Techniques for the Giant Panda held in the capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Panda protection organizations like the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in the Wolong Nature Reserve and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding have helped to achieve high cub birth and survival rates of the black and white animal.

Global warming is a war that has to be fought and with the help of most people it can be achieved. Of course, by everyone, this includes that of the children who are hearing about global warming but do not have any idea on what it really is.

Thanks to the efforts of some people, kids are getting educated on what threats and expectations will be lurking around with the impending global warming catastrophe. A lot is at stake and for kids who want a brighter future, they can do their own part as well if they are made aware and guided to what they have to do.

Some of the city’s public schoolchildren learned something new about modern warfare while listening to US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney read a story about Filipino “eco-warriors” who fight global warming.

Kenney was the latest guest reader of the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Read Along program, which was sponsored this time by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the US Department of Energy on its first out-of-town session at SM City Baguio on Wednesday.

Car Free Day in the U.K.

To ease up on vehicle congestion and to reduce carbon emissions, today was Car Free Day in the U.K.

The city of Inverness today was urging people to take alternate means of transportation to and from work, such as buses, trains, and bikes. Many opted to partake and were greeted with offers of free parking and free temporary bikes from a local group.

One dude even made a triathlon out of it by running, cycling, and even canoeing up a river to his job. Now that is green!

This was all part of Wednesday’s Car Free Day.

Car Free Day in the U.K.

World Vegetarian Day, October 6th, Ireland

On October 6th, “the biggest event in the vegetarian calendar in Ireland” will take place. 2007 marks year 13 for the World Vegetarian Day Annual Fair. In Dublin’s Temple Bar, is where the event will take place this, and 1500 to 2000 people are expected.

The fair is an excellent choice for those considering going vegetarian or those just looking for some healthy recipe alternatives. Those who visit will be “treated with a wide variety of delicious and healthy food served by some of the top vegetarian restaurants in Ireland”.

Food vendors, info booths, cooking demos, and talks will be held throughout the day, from 11am to 5pm on Saturday, October 6th. For more details hit the source.

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards were broadcast last nite and although i didn’t catch all of it, i caught maybe the last hour or so, it was the first to go carbon neutral.

I did catch the Sopranos winning the final award for best drama, and James Spader for supporting actor. Oh! i also caught the Tony Bennett and Christina Aguilera number, that was a very cool duet.

This is one of the things to expect when the Echo-Project festival goes underway, having such bands and musicians like The Flaming Lips among their roster of artists who will help promote the program to the masses.

“Generation of energy, waste management and habitat restoration,” Turley said adding that the state of the river is critical. “We’re hoping to drive 2,000 people to volunteer to clean the river … 750 people have volunteered so far.”

After being delayed for some time due to the rains, the first solar-powered car will finally be introduced to the public.

The solar-powered vehicle was a product of a group of engineering students from the De La Salle University. The said car will be competing in the 3,000 kilometers 20th World Solar Challenge which will be held in Australia in October.

Serving notice that its claim two years ago was no fluke, Wal-Mart has recently donated a hefty sum of $1.5 million to the University of Arkansas to enhance the green research to help cut down various factors contributing towards the green issue today. These include the area of greenhouse gases and banking on sustainability.

This donation will of course go a long way considering that green research on how to contain such relevant green issues today are needed. Being at the forefront of it all, it is without a doubt that Wal-Mart is inclined to hold on to its promise to do its social responsibility towards the world today.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas researchers will study how retailers can cut greenhouse gases and be more environmentally friendly, thanks to $1.5 million from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., school and company officials announced Wednesday.

Oil Crisis May Lead to World War

The world is beset by an obvious world oil crisis contributed by a lot of factors. One is that the usual area where oil has been produced has been almost used up and the other involves that of being trapped inside a circle of war between two countries. Of course, these are Iran and the United States and if things are not ironed out soon, more than just an oil crisis is expected to suffice.

It is no secret that Iran has had some nuclear activities within its territories to try and get the upper hands for security risks surrounding its country. While this is being negotiated, the fact is that anything is possible when a country is found to be armed with potential nuclear weapons. Man will be a victim and most will be civilians.

So if you are worried about oil, this is just the cover of the whole area. There are far more scary possibilities and people will not be comfortable with the reality of nuclear holocaust over the horizon.

How many of you visit YouTube for eco-friendly and green information or just to catch a hot new green video everyone is talking about?

The one thing that has always beefed me about YouTube is its lack of categories, and/ or the lack of one being able to narrow down their focus. As i do research and look things up for this and my other blogs, i always am on the look out for that green “category” or “section“. And surprisingly many times in different online media outlets i do find it, but it is not completely mainstream, just yet.

To the rescue comes in a new green video sharing site, called emPivot, that is dedicated to green and eco-friendly videos. This new video site probably won’t be as big as YouTube, but for a certain demographic it is highly welcomed and appreciated. Plus i keep reading in new media journals that niching is a trend that we will see more of as a way for folks to wade through all the info overload.

A few years ago, the mantra was, “Livin La Vida Loca” which was a popular hit song from Puerto-Rican sensation Ricky Martin. But the mantra has evolved today to “Livin La Low Carbon Lifestyle” which is the name of a 40 port tour in the U.k by a British carpenter named Mukti Mitchell.

Mukti aims to raise awareness and teach others about incorporating eco friendly ways of living, and that it is fun and easy to do. He has built himself a homemade low carbon mini yacht, which he travels in to get the message across to whomever will listen.
