Fake Ice Rink Opens in New York

Christmas is nothing if you don’t see the usual people skating around the hardened waters that form ice where people of all ages skate. This brings us to remember the arctics where iced areas are a common place we see skaters and of course the roaming polar bears. For New Yorkers, improvising using synthetic ice can provide a better alternative to newbie skaters while at the same time avoiding the harms of a bad fall on ice.

It may not provide the same expectations from a natural ice rink but if you want to enjoy the pleasures of ice skating while preserving the environment, this is one alternative you are bound not to miss.

The eco-friendly rink reminds visitors about the effects of global warming with a 17-foot glowing polar bear centerpiece. Its “ice” is actually a plastic surface engineered to match the density of frozen water. Every morning, a light spray lubricates the surface for skaters. Thanks to the clever new material, the museum doesn’t devour enormous amounts of energy the way traditional ice skating rinks do. It also doesn’t need to spend money on Zamboni cleanings. The “ice” isn’t biodegradable, but the museum can re-use the same sheets for several years, and then they recycle the plastic.

For sure, the fashion trends we hear of today that applies the eco-friendly requirements are rampant and among them would include designs offered by groups like Ecoskin. There are a lot of eco-brands that are rising in the market and apparently most of them are gearing up for the coming Spring.

With so many eco-fashion wear that are bound to hit the market, displaying them through eco-fashion shows are sure to do wonders as far as consumer consideration on which among the top eco-brand designers are offering a lot of things in the market today and much of them can be seen at Magic which plays host to a lot of eco-friendly designers and what they have in store for us in the coming Spring.

Fans can look forward to Holiday and Resort, two new collections that blend bamboo, tencel, and spandex to create soft and contoured dresses, tops, and wraps.

The G8 Summit is More than a Gathering

As we all know by now, the G8 Summit at the summit’s International Media Center in Rusutsumura is underway and to create the right impression and mood, don’t think that this event is simply about debating and discussing the governing problems the world has to deal with today as far as climate change and global warming is concerned.

On hand as well are some eco-friendly ideas and gadgets that are placed to get attention. Also, what better way to address the G8 summit than to use eco-friendly fuel cell buses and hybrid or electric cars.

A social worker of Rusutsumura, who took a test ride in the car, said: “It was so quiet and comfortable. Compared with my regular small car, it was a paradise.”

Another vehicle available for test driving was Toyota’s Personal Mobility i-Real, a lithium ion battery-powered vehicle that operates something like a chair on wheels, with cruising and walking modes.

Constructed based on the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) principle, the International Media Center itself incorporates such environmental technologies as a snow cooling system, solar panels, green walls and other materials.

With that said, hopefully we can get something productive and ideal out of it all.

The G8 Summit is More than a Gathering

GreenFest Opens This Weekend in Chicago

I wrote about Washington DC GreenFest and the San Fransisco GreenFest a few months ago, and now it is time for the Chicago GreenFest. Green Fest hits Navy Pier in Chicago, this weekend, May 17 and 18.

With over 350 businesses and 150 speakers, this eco friendly minded festival shakes up Chi-Town. This is a rather large event, in 2007 there were over 31,000 attendees, and this year sets the stage for an even bigger event.

You can do all of the following (and more) at the 2008 Chicago GreenFest:

watch a demonstration
mingle with other eco conscious consumers
visit booths from local green busineeses
sample vegetarian and vegan fare
pick up green freebies
join contests
and so much more.

The Green Festival kicks off today till 8pm, and opens again tomorrow, May 18, from 11am till 6pm in Chicago’s Navy Pier.

GreenFest Opens This Weekend in Chicago

Brighton in the UK is to hold their first sustainable eco festival called the Green Wave Festival. It will be held in the largest green space in the city, Preston Park and will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday the 5^th and 6^th of July 2008 the festival will be open from 11 am to 5 pm.

The park will be split up into zones, like Wellbeing, Transport, Recycling, Water, Energy, Science, Earth, Music, and Schools and Youth Zones. Not forgetting that visitors will need to eat there will also be a fresh produce market.

Fighting for what people believe in as far as the green efforts is concerned may be commendable. But just like anything else, the whole initiative should start from the very grounds to which established sites will originate from.

People can start out headquarters and places to play office and home base towards the whole project or activity. However, good practices should be done immediately after and before launching the whole campaign. Failing to do so will surely make negative marks and question the whole intent of the drive to go green and help the world.

The best way to help promote environmental and green awareness today is through artists and musicians who find themselves in the middle of all the attention during music festivals today.

This is one of the things to expect when the Echo-Project festival goes underway, having such bands and musicians like The Flaming Lips among their roster of artists who will help promote the program to the masses.

“Generation of energy, waste management and habitat restoration,” Turley said adding that the state of the river is critical. “We’re hoping to drive 2,000 people to volunteer to clean the river … 750 people have volunteered so far.”

36,000 attended last years Green Festival in San Francisco. This is the festival dedicated to green living and sustainable practice and this year the Green Festival, is scheduled for the weekend of November 9th.
