Toyota To Donate One Tree for Each Car Sold in April

The need for more trees has been called on for some time now and it seems Toyota of South Florida has not forgotten that. In fact, they have announced that each car they sold for April will be equivalent to one tree to be donated to the America Forests to help address the lack of trees today.

For the record, Toyota of South Florida sold 310 cars meaning that they will be donating 310 trees to American Forests, the world leader in planting trees for environmental restoration. Now this eco-friendly initiative should be something that environmentalists will surely praise. We are all aware that trees have been dwindling in numbers due to illegal logging and chopping and hopefully this effort translates into something better for the environmental needs today.

Cars sold in April in honor of Earth Day included the Corolla, the Camry, the Yaris, the Matrix, the Solara, and the Scion XD which are all vehicles available at Toyota of South Florida that provide more than 30 highway miles per gallon.

Disney Launches First Earth Film

Walt Disney has announced the first earth film under their Disneynature Films label, Earth. The launch of the said film is right on time for Earth Day on April 22, 2009. The family-friendly 90-minute documentary film follows the life of three animal families as they move around the world.

The stars of the film are families of polar bears, humpback whales and elephants. The film took an estimated 2,000 days to shoot in more than 200 locations around the globe.

The movie is a joint project between Disney and the successful BBC TV series Planet Earth. Alastair Fothergill, director of the BBC TV series is also co-director, along with Mark Linfield, of the Disney Earth film. “The film has a very strong environmental message” .

Even the comic makers are getting into the eco-friendly act. If you are a constant reader of Archie then perhaps Betty and Veronica are familiar names to you. But this time around, the new comic spectacular is not about fighting over Archie but rather to help promote eco-friendliness through tips and ideas like green shopping, fashion and activities. A definite must have for all eco-friendly readers and of course the legendary Archie comic fans.

Dialog is believable, and Betty and Veronica and their supporting characters all ring true to long established personalities. But don’t ask me about the nuances of wearing a bikini to the beach, or doing my nails, or flirting appropriately with the new hunk in town.

“Pique-Nique” Tax for Plastic Users in France

Every once in a while, we want to spend some time away with a friend or the family perhaps and normally picnics are not far from being considered. But while many are wondering on what food to bring and eat, others are thinking of containers and what bottled beverages such as water and juices to buy.

However, if you are in France, beware. Apparently to help control the large utilization of plastic bottles and utensils in their region. It is called as the “taxe pique-nique“.

A tax of 90 cents (71p) per kilogram (2.2 lbs) will be placed on plastic and paper throwaway cups from next year, aimed at cutting the average 360kg (793 lbs) of rubbish generated per person per year in France.

But will it work? Some doubt it.

Some said the tax would not make them change their ways. “I’m not really prepared to carry heavy plates and cutlery, so I’ll probably go on as before – it’s just another tax,” said one mother of a family picnicking in Paris. “They’d probably make more money by taxing all these new laws they keep passing,” she said.

Whatever happens there is bound to be something concrete to make it happen. A good idea but perhaps needs a little more fine-tuning.

If you think carbon emissions are primarily caused by gas-belching vehicles then guess again. This time around, even the standard gas-powered home mowers need to watch out as there are new emission rules that will be enforced to lower the emissions that they cause each time home owners decide to have their lawns trimmed.

Beginning in 2011, new gas-powered lawn and garden equipment of less than 25 horsepower will be required to reduce emissions by 35 percent, and all gas-powered recreational boats must reduce emissions by 70 percent in 2010, according to new EPA regulations

At the rate people are saving up today, this 24 Karat Gold bike is sure to be of no interest to most people these days. But the fact remains that there is an eco-friendly tag attached to it, making it marketable and perhaps attractive in the eyes of millionaires and personalities that may just buy it for their personal collection and of course, bragging rights.

But how can an expensive gold bike become eco-friendly? Well mostly on the parts as they have been replaced with eco-friendly materials as well as the intent of selling them for better eco-friendly transport research.

But don’t think that this bike will be seen a lot in public. It is purely for collectors item purposes to which the buyers will even be helping society since the money raised for it will go Environmental Transport Association (ETA).

The bike has been commissioned by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), an insurance provider. Besides being environmental-friendly, the bike also serves a charitable purpose, as the money it raises would also go to ETA, a non-profit organisation who campaigns for sustainable transport. However, it is too expensive to be insured and thus comes with its own personal bodyguard.

In an effort to transform and limit its carbon footprint, Taco del Mar has taken the initiative to change its current line of food packaging and do its part for contributing towards eco-friendly awareness as far as business is concerned. To most consumers, it would not matter as long as they get their meals but sooner or later, most of us will appreciate the efforts of these companies such as Taco del Mar in doing away with the waste.

Among the things they aim to change are their waste bags, utensils, food lids and trays. This effort will go a long way and will certainly be good for business.

Taco del Mar, in a joint venture with Trellis Earth, may be the first big restaurant chain in the country to go green.

“We are going to be changing 16 pieces total in our packaging, everything from our trays to our lids to our garbage bags to our utensils will now be earth friendly,” said Erin Gilbert, Taco del Mar marketing director.

In the food business, gas and waste are two of the high needs that owners would have to worry about. Hiring someone to carry out the garbage and getting rid of spoiled oil are two things that they have to cater to and this cycle and innovation that has been developed by The Red Blazer is truly something that most current restaurant and dining owners would want to check out and consider.

Karathanasis learned of the device at a Chicago trade show, and found it solved an immediate problem — his staff had to lug out heavy bags full of empty glass bottles to the garbage bin in back. That practice had led to a couple of injuries, he said, and the glass crusher — which pulverizes empties and dumps the remains into a bucket — solved that problem.

Not having to throw the empties away meant a lot less garbage in the outside bin. That translated to lower costs for hauling it away. As in $8,400 a year lower.

Overjoyed with this success, Karathanasis began looking at other ways to conserve. He switched out the restaurant’s light bulbs. He installed a new dishwashing system that saves on water and electricity, helping reduce his power bill substantially. When he was once paying $8,000 a month for electricity, this past month he paid just $5,500 — in the height of summer, with its consequent need for air-conditioning inside the restaurant.

With the whole world is going agog as far as adhering toward green compliant standards for their buildings are concerned, much of this has rubbed off and reached the shores of Long Island. We are all aware that going green is a lot more complicated than it seems. For one, it entails putting into consideration of Green building means erecting houses that are better insulated, use less energy, conserve water and are more eco-friendly. With these under consideration, Long Island is acknowledging this need and is obviously trying to spearhead the green drive for greener homes.

But going green is the talk of the industry after the National Association of Home Builders introduced its new Green Building Program at the event two weeks ago. Some time this May, the builders’ group will be naming about 1,700 builders “certified green professionals.”

It is really easy to spot good recycling practices that go hand in hand with the green efforts for a better world to live in. We all hate waste and making use of renewable resources can help minimize our diminishing resources and at the same time give us lesser worries as far as green peace in the world today is concerned.

State law requires that most localities or regional waste management operations recycle at least 25 percent of waste generated. Rural areas and those with high unemployment must recycle at least 15 percent.

“The increase in recycling and the number of localities meeting the recycling rates reflects the continued support by Virginians for recycling in their communities,” DEQ Director David K. Paylor said.

The Willows is the new educational center that is being worked upon to provide better understanding to the students when it comes to environmental awareness.

Indeed it may seem to be a hefty investment but the price to pay for such may be worth every penny considering it is for a greener and social cause that starts from the young people who will benefit in the coming years.

School leaders say the cost will be worth every penny if students learn how to save the world by creating healthy environments.

“(Our building) is important because it doesn’t pollute the environment as much,” Chatfield fifth-grader Glacier Wallington, 11, said of the 5,700-square-foot center set to open in February.

One thing that leads consumers to patronize supposed green products are logos and labels that certify that they have passed the green standards. Ordinarily, they may seem as consistent to rely on. However, there are times where some people may be misled by what passing the green standards really mean.

All we know is that if there are seals or approvals coming from commissioned green organizations, then the product is green. But have you ever thought of looking at the fine print and the components of these products? Before you jump into any conclusions, try and check out the product to the letter. Do not be misled by faulty labeling and advertising and help companies to simply make a buck.

We are all aware of the many PC games we have played at a time. EASports has been known to provide good games in the form of role-playing and arcade to which has made most people stuck in the computers and playing these games individually or online.

But if there is one game that people fail to connect with the entire green movement and ecology issues we have today, there is a game which may be familiar to us that we have failed to recognize.

SimCity is a simulation role playing game that places us a mayor of certain towns. While our immediate goal is to make sure that we build and develop regions into rural or urban classes of society, there are also the qualms of having to adhere towards healthy living. As mayor, it is more than just peace and order, pollution, beautification and social interaction. There are in-game options that allow us to practice our going green beliefs.

Waste management and pollution are some of the usual problems the mayor of SimCity has to deal with. Add to that a growing population and the need for energy sources, you can more or less see how to play god and balance everything if you can.

It is a tough challenge to play SimCity, especially the latest releases from EASports. While you are awed by the whole game goal, try and check out how “SIMS” are reacting to your leadership. You may be surprised that they are no different from the way we all clamor and move towards greener living in the real world today.
