As schools start to welcome the students for the new school year, EcoSMART is gearing up an effort to remind parents of the harmful effects of pesticides used by schools for their classrooms. Pesticides and other known toxic chemicals are commonly used to ensure the hygiene and cleanliness of schools but the fact remains that their remains or fumes can be harmful to kids.

EcoSMART offers information online for parents to learn about how commonly used pesticides with harmful chemical ingredients can be a threat in school and at home for children, and supports the nonprofits Beyond Pesticides and Healthy Child Healthy World in providing information to help parents better understand the issues of pest control.

EcoSMART is thus urging parents to talk to school officials about the SEPA ruling, and health dangers of toxic pesticide use, and to take initiative in their own homes, and gardens, to make the living environment free of harmful chemical pesticides.

Intel Recycles Unused Processors to Fight Climate Change

Intel makes use of the Facebook interface to solicit unused and defunct processors which in turn will be used for a worthy cause to help research projects in finding cures against diseases and climate change. Among the organizations who will be the beneficiaries of the cause, Rosetta@home, Climateprediction.net and Africa@home.

Launched today as a public beta and available to all Facebook users, the application automatically directs a computer’s idle processor power to fuel researchers’ computational efforts. The application will activate only when a PC’s performance is not being fully utilized. When the participant’s computer usage demands more processor performance, the application defers and sits idle until spare processing capabilities become available again.

The application runs automatically as a background process on a PC and will not affect performance or any other tasks. Additionally, Progress Thru Processors does not require participants to leave their computers powered up unnecessarily. By keeping their PCs on only as they normally would, participants will still be contributing to life-changing research.

I was so excited when I ran into this article in this month’s Vegetarian Times magazine, because the issue is one of these myths that over time just forms a life of its own.

Water.

Do we really need 8 glasses of water a day? That is the age old question. According to the article water makes up 50 to 70 percent of our bodies. Everyday we lose the equivalent of between four and 13 8-ounce glasses of water a day – through perspiration, urine, exhaled moisture, etc. So to stay well hydrated the US government has come up with a recommended figure for both men and women. For men it’s 16 glasses and for women it’s 11 glasses each day.

So it is quite vital. But how do we get the requisite amount without overdosing on H20.

Mystery solved. You don’t literally need to drink 8 glasses to reach the allotted daily amount.

“You get much of the water you need from the FOODS you eat”.

They go on to provide several examples of foods that provide good H20, such as oatmeal – a bowl of this hearty stuff provides a whopping 8 ounces.

Quantity of Water in Popular Foods

A cup of soup – 8 ounces

A cup of rice – 5 ounces

A pear – 5 ounces

An Apple – 5 ounces

The myth of the 8 daily glasses came from overzealous health writers who encouraged people to drink eight glasses, over and above and the water in our foods. But according to research drinking in excess of the US government recommended amount is not necessary or beneficial.

So there you have it. The 8 glasses of water myth de-mystified. Once and for all.

Organizers claim that working out in the fresh air reduces people’s stress levels and risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as improving muscular strength and helping older people to lead more independent lives.

“It only takes 30 minutes a day of physical activity, at least five days a week, to gain enormous health benefits and help prevent many serious diseases such as heart disease, cancer and stroke,” said Shona Robison, minister for public health and sport.

“Green Gyms are free for everyone to use, and for people who won’t set foot in a regular gym, they offer a way to improve your fitness while meeting new people, learning something new and benefiting your local area.”

Green Tea Helps Promote Teeth and Gums

A study recently published in the Journal of Periodontology, the official publication of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), uncovered yet another benefit of green tea consumption. Researchers found that routine intake of green tea may also help promote healthy teeth and gums. The study analyzed the periodontal health of 940 men, and found that those who regularly drank green tea had superior periodontal health than subjects that consumed less green tea.

Green tea’s ability to help reduce symptoms of periodontal disease may be due to the presence of the antioxidant catechin. Previous research has demonstrated antioxidants’ ability to reduce inflammation in the body, and the indicators of periodontal disease measured in this study, PD, CAL and BOP, suggest the existence of an inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria in the mouth.

By interfering with the body’s inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria, green tea may actually help promote periodontal health, and ward off further disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth, and has been associated with the progression of other diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Cleaning – One easy and relatively inexpensive way to green your kitchen is to focus on the cleaning products you use. Many of the more popular brands of kitchen cleaning products have tons of unnatural chemicals which seep into the air we breathe. Over time this accumulates and is unhealthy for you and your family. Batteries will always be in demand even if with the emergence of rechargeable options in the market. The problem is how do you make batteries eco-friendly? Fuji seems to address that problem with the development of the EnviroMAX batteries.

The new batteries are free of mercury, cadmium, and PVC, chemicals cited by the European RoHS initiative as hazardous chemicals to be avoided (it’s unclear whether the new batteries will earn RoHS certification, however). In a move to help bring down the growing problem of greenhouse gas emissions in Sonoma County, it has been reported that the Sonoma County government has embarked on putting up a $22.3 million reduction plan that includes installing a fuel cell power plant.

The plant, which takes hydrogen from natural gas to create an electrochemical reaction that produces electricity, will cost about $9.8 million and will be key to achieving reduced energy usage. It does seem like a heavy price to pay but if you want to address the health issues which could balloon in Sonoma County, they may perhaps want to view it as a long-term plan that can improve the local way of business and improving societal inclinations as well.

Now asthmatic people may be in for a surprise as there are reported revisions to the traditional asthma inhalers. “A lot of patients may already have them,” said Dr. Nathanael Horne, of Asthma and Allergy PC and an assistant attending at St. Vincent’s Hospital, which are both located in New York City. “Many doctors already switched their patients over.”

The down side to the switch: The new inhalers cost more, $30 to $50 compared to as little as $5 or $10 for the disappearing generic CFC inhalers, Horne said.

Tobacco and cigarettes have long been considered a problem for people who want to put a stop towards pollution and of course health risks as far as smoking is concerned but many of you are bound to get a kick out of this. Ever heard of an eco-friendly cigarette?

Apparently officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Singapore Customs (SC) seized 2,016 cartons of “eco-friendly tobacco”. Now that would be a first for them and though they had doubts on the claims, after proper scanning, the claims were found to be consistent.

On Nov 24 at about 7.45pm, an inbound Malaysian-registered truck declared to be conveying disposable food containers and wrapping films pulled into Tuas Checkpoint and was directed for radiographic scanning.

The officers found the scanned image to be inconsistent with the declared consignment.

While this may seem to be a new discovery, the legality of it all was the one put into question. Smuggling is a grave offense and it carries certain penalties.

Upon conviction by the court, first-time offenders of cigarette smuggling can be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of duty evaded. For second or subsequent convictions, offenders can be jailed for up to two years, as well as being fined. The offenders also face further fines based on the amount of GST evaded.

The vehicles used in the commission of such offence are also liable to be forfeited.

Singapore Customs warns that buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, having in possession or dealing with contraband cigarettes are serious offences under the Customs and GST Acts.

The public are strongly advised not to buy duty-unpaid cigarettes. For possessing a packet of duty-unpaid cigarettes, an offender may face a minimum fine of $500 or prosecution in court

The study’s lab tests on 10 brands of bottled water detected 38 chemicals including bacteria, caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic-making chemicals and the radioactive element strontium. Though some probably came from tap water that some companies use for their bottled water, other contaminants probably leached from plastic bottles, the researchers said.

As much as possible we should watch how far they are from us, especially if we are using reading lamps that make use of these fluorescent bulbs. The UV rays emitted by them can be dangerous and can cause skin problems if we do not watch it.

Exposure at one inch gave a UV level equivalent to being outside in the UK on a sunny summer’s day.

But at distances of more than 12 inches, the UV level was found to be safe.

More than 20million ‘eco bulbs’ are sold every year, about 13 per cent of the total, and they last around 10,000 hours – up to 12 times longer than traditional bulbs

Luckily, Web sites such as the Environmental Working Group’s cosmetic safety database Skin Deep and PristinePlanet.com have done much of the work for you. On Skin Deep, the Environmental Working Group has compiled information on ingredients in thousands of personal-care products and matched them against data in more than 50 toxicity and regulatory databases. Based on the results, each product is given its own “hazard” score. Pristine Planet, which grew its traffic from 50,000 to 100,000 shoppers over the past year, lets consumers browse, compare and review sustainable companies’ products, including price points, says Catherine Finn, owner and co-founder.

Fourth of July Eco-Friendly Pyrotechnic Alternatives

The Fourth of July is just three days away and you can bet that most people are figuring out how to celebrate this annual event in the most eco-friendly way possible. For sure, fireworks will be the first in mind. But are there any eco-friendly fireworks within reach?

The answer here is coloring agents. We are all amazed at the fireworks display because of color and light. The usual harmful elements are potassium perchlorate which is a known element in pyrotechnics. So taking that out and using another compound in the form of strontium-based oxidants may help provide eco-friendly firework solutions that people will be looking for come this Friday during the regular Fourth of July celebration.

The C&EN article also warns us that coloring agents used during fireworks could be friendlier to the planet. “The other area in which pyrotechnics could improve from an environmental standpoint is their use of coloring agents. To achieve colored fireworks and flares, pyrotechnic makers employ metals or metal compounds that emit light in the visible spectrum. Red hues come from strontium, sodium glows yellow, barium burns green, and blues and greens come from copper. At one time, mercury and lead compounds were used as colorants, but they were phased out long ago. Ironically, the modern pyrotechnic components that could use some “greening” are the barium compounds that give fireworks and flares their green color.”

Fourth of July Eco-Friendly Pyrotechnic Alternatives

Bio-Toilets Installed in Indian Railways

As part of their drive to become eco-friendly, Indian Railways has implemented the use of bio-toilets in their tracks. Unlike a normal toilet, in the bio-toilet only the water trickles down the track, while the sludge is retained in the tank.

They aim to implement this 100% in all their 9,000 trains by 2013, shifting from the biological toilets that waste water profusely. While there are detractors on the feasibility of this investment, the logic of the whole system flow of bio-toilet installation is indeed something to ponder on.

This toilet uses less than 5 litres of water per flush against uncontrolled use of water in open toilets. In a year, about a kg of waste will be collected in the tank, which will be cleared manually. Though it will save water, the bio-toilet comes at a price. For every coach, the railways will have to shell out Rs 8 lakh as equipment cost and Rs 1.5-2 lakh as operations cost per year.

Just when you thought that you could have an eco-friendly burial, cremation seems to be hanging in the air as far as eco-friendly proportions of burials by cremation is concerned. A lot of questions has been hurled at the cardboard coffins for the reason that some safety issues as well as the issue of the ashes that they will be creating.

Crematorium Society of Canterbury general manager Barbara Terry said the Ecocoffins, imported from China, could be used for burials but not burnt in the crematorium because of the amount of ash they produced, coupled with safety concerns.

“There is no credible data or research that can make us feel confident the emissions from this product are of acceptable standards,” she said.

“This particular supplier has made the decision to bring these caskets into the country and the onus is on him to present information to the industry.

“They leave a tremendous amount of fly ash, which does not combust and settles amongst the remains of the deceased like a tacky attachment. It is a sensitive issue and we must take care to return ashes to the family to our satisfaction.”

Palm oil mostly originating from Asia has had its share of controversies connected with the whole eco-friendliness issue today. Apparently, people today look more towards the havoc that it has done rather than what it can do to help make the environment greener.

Palm oil has been blamed for deforestation and for driving species such as the orangutan to the verge of extinction. But if you look a little bit closer, you will find that certain products such as margarine, washing power, ice cream or even cosmetics that make use of it.

So between the two, which outweighs which? Perhaps the real deal here is identifying what palm oil can really provide and how we can control it and make it sustainable.

Palm oil is in a vast range of consumer products, from margarine to washing powder, and is probably in your favourite ice-cream, coffee creamer or even your lipstick. You might not be aware of this because many manufacturers simply call it “vegetable oil” on the label, often to try to avoid the stigma that has become attached to palm oil.

Campaigns by groups such as Friends of the Earth in the United Kingdom and Europe saw consumer boycotts of products containing palm oil forcing retail giants to put pressure on producers to prove that their product is sustainable and eco-friendly.

If you haven’t noticed, the warm climate that has been hitting various parts of the world like Australia and various parts of Asia like the Philippines are not your usual heat waves that come in seasons like summer. While most of us think that they are only normal they are not. They are products of the global warming issue which has been made popular by Al Gore.

All the things we do to harm our environment like pollution and improper waste management have been key ingredients towards the global warming recipe. We may not associate it now but global warming is a reality.

Many people feel that this would be a good time the beaches but be sure to apply added amounts of sun blocks. Getting a tan is one thing but suffering from the heat in the form of sunburn or heat stroke is not as simple as most of us deem it to be. Global warming is a clear culprit in the worsening climate we all have to deal with so be wiser when you go out!

Climate change is plain to see in southern Australia. After 10 years of seriously below average rainfalls, folks have had to adapt: There is a weekly two-hour outdoor water restriction. Residents collect every bit of what little rain they get. They have re-landscaped their yards with indigenous plants and given up English-style gardens. It is no longer a question of whether to get an 11,000-gallon cistern for rain collection – the question now is how many.

We just spent a day driving around Victoria, going up mountains (small ones) with vast lookouts over dry barren land. I am told that in the springtime the land is green for a few weeks, but right now that is hard to imagine. Every land holder determines the lowest point on their land and collects water in a small dugout pond. However, this prevents the water from flowing into creeks, so it was no surprise to find all of the creeks bone dry. What few rivers we did drive over had stagnant puddles of water with tiers of grass between them – no flowing water was anywhere to be seen.

Dengue Cases Caused by Climate Change

We all want to stay as fit as possible but apparently, there are some factors like climate change which we cannot avoid. For countries like the Philippines, a well-known but deadly disease like Dengue will feast on such an opportunity and even go to the extent of claiming lives despite numerous health warnings regarding the spread of this epidemic.

Worst of all, it is the children who will be sitting ducks. While adults have a high immunization to these diseases, they are still not spared. Dengue is a virus that is hard to avoid and adding the problems of garbage and waste to countries like the Philippines, you can imagine the high risk setting that this country is sitting on.

Dengue is just one disease. There are other potential health risks such as Typhoid and Malaria cases that are leading the illnesses in this Asian country. It can only get worse as climate change issues continue to worsen.

“In the Philippines, there already are trends of increasing number of hot days and warm nights, but decreasing number of cold days and cool nights. Other extreme weather climate events like intense rains have been seen to be more frequent.”
