If you want to be more green, you might also want to consider doing some wood recycling work around your house such as recycling an old gate into an outdoor table. Not only is this sensible, you might end up with a great outdoor table like the one seen in this picture.

The gates at the side of our house succumbed to a big wind storm recently. The cause was ground rot on the posts, but that meant that most of the wood was still in pretty good condition despite being over thirty years old. Instead of throwing it out my wife suggested recycling it to make an outdoor table.

The Home improvement market is still aggressive these days, and apparently the key to success is the continued focus on the composition and origin of the materials used. Trees are a raw material that can be harvested and replanted to replenish forests time and time again. In fact, not only are trees a renewable resource, but there actually are more trees in existence today in the United States than there were 50 years ago.

The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service conducts annual studies of U.S. forests and reports that average annual net growth for hardwoods is greater than average annual removals for hardwood. They report that the average growth to removal ratio is 1.66, which means that for every cubic foot of hardwood that is harvested each year, 1.66 cubic feet is replanted in its place. This means that U.S. forest volume is growing by more than 50% every year.

Obviously, forests are being replenished at a rate greater than they are being harvested, making wood, and wood flooring, a renewable resource and an obvious choice for environmentally conscious consumers.

It is great when someone manages to make something out of a material that would otherwise have been discarded like this walnut stool. The wood used would have been thrown away because it came from edges and end of larger pieces of the walnut block.

The stool or side table, has been named the Prism, it has triangular shaped legs while the top has been given a hexagonal appearance. What is more walnut is a fascinating material that has a lovely finish to it and this particular piece has been treated with a non toxic water based finish and has been given protective feet.

One such artist is Boris Bally, a regular visitor to the scrap yard where his finds go towards the making of some really unusual furniture. Most road signs are colourful and are made from aluminium, which is light, making it ideal for this use, and of course, every item is going to be different.

As the barriers come in two pieces all these need is to be reorganised and the barrier goes from stop traffic to a seat where people can sit comfortably and watch the traffic pass them by.

Bamboo also has an edge over wood because converting bamboo into furniture saves more energy, he notes. Drying bamboo, for instance, takes eight to 12 hours in a kiln, while wood takes up to six weeks.

No matter what part of the world that you live in, you will always find these crates. In some cases they are found discarded at the side of a road, or occasionally they can be found floating in the local river.

Which probably why some people have some really great ideas, like these they have all been produced by using the plastic grates and because they are both light and strong, they can be reused for furniture and even a chandelier, matching colours are optional and in some cases preferable.

If this item had no pictures you may find it hard to comprehend that furniture can be made from materials that you would have thought to be too weak to cope, but these images defy all that logical and just go to prove that not everything has to be made in accordance to normal thinking.

These pieces of furniture have been designed and produced by Yasmin Sethi from the UK. She has used tightly rolled newspapers to give this set a look and functional appearance which is probably not really seen in any other style of furniture.

This is part of her foundation course in art and design, but if they ever did get into the stores, do you think that you may be able to choose which newspapers make up your furniture?

The best part is that a majority of the concepts and design is based on innovative ideas negating the use of expensive raw materials.

The centuries old process of creating handmade washi papers is a testament to the fact that sustainable and biodegradable materials are often rooted in honored traditions and indigenous practices. We loved the voluminous, geometric lanterns that Precious Papers had on display, and we were even more intrigued by the possibilities for using their eco-parchment in both architectural and interior design projects.

Kaisin took regular newspapers, layered, glued and compressed them to create a building material that is as strong as wood. He then took these sheets and mimicked one of natures strongest forms, the honeycomb, to create this amazing expandable bench.

This stylish piece of furniture is actually filled with dozens of newspapers to support the weight of anyone willing to sit on it.

Although the chair itself looks very uncomfortable, it seems to have a ton of uses such as replacing steel/wood public benches.

Even better, they should leave a little room where people can stick their newspaper after they are done reading it.

Dozens of rolled up newspapers found their way back to functionality in the cleverly designed Newspaper Chair by Kimberly Kulka, a student at California College of the Arts. We love the smart thought process behind this chair – store your magazines and newspapers underneath the form for added structural stability and cushioning (and storage space of course). This is one of the most inspired takes on the magazine rack idea that we’ve seen in awhile.

Addressing the topic of sustainable design for mass production at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair this past week, students from CCA presented explored new forms for recycled design. With the newspaper chair, a geometric form gives the chair structure, while rolled up literature provides extra support, cushioning and soul, plus a little extra storage space.

There is no easy way of saying it, but our waste management is under some serious pressure, and yet it is the consumer who is stuck in the middle that has to dispose of the all that waste which we seem to accumulate every time that we visit the supermarket.

But one enterprising artist has come up with an ingenious way of enabling the consumer a way to not only get rid of that rubbish and waste, but to actually use it to in the home.

This is furniture made from waste by the artist Nick Demarco who is at the California College of the Arts. Naturally when you are finished with this, all that is needed is that you put it outside for the bin men!

Could this be the furniture of the future? Well it is what students at the University of Idaho think; they have been producing these pieces of green furniture for a project that has been named Re-Furnished.

Cardboard in itself may not be totally eco friendly, but when it has been recycled then it takes on a different image, and could be classed as totally green.

The way that they have made these pieces, means that the material is strong enough to be sat on, granted it may not be all that comfortable in some cases, but these chairs are definitely functional. When they have been finished with, and then is there the possibility of the material being recycled again?

However the images show the woman using a laptop, I am not quite sure that a laptop can be charged up by using this table, we need a closer look at the specs in order to find that one out, and smaller electrical items are ok though.
