Ikea Invest in Solar Power

Ikea already has a great image with the eco friendly people of the world, after all, they do sell some eco friendly goods. Furthermore,  everything is flat packed  in storage and the transportation is kept to a minimum.

2

2

But, it seems that Ikea is going even further than that with a a $77 billion investment into its Green Tech Energy Fund. The idea being to develop a reasonably priced solar panel kit for use in the home. Sounds great, because if Ikea can do for eco tech what they have done with furniture,  then they will make it accessible to a broader base of people.

Crystals In Lieu of Fire Wood

Most great homes today make use of the fireplace to get a relaxing feel as well as warmth when it comes to homes located in cold climate regions. However, the problem of some homes is the matter of pollution produced by burning wood and of course the supply of wood, a resource that is undoubtedly dilapidating by the day.

Fire crystals have been introduced these days as a better alternative. They make use of natural gas and are a lot less polluting substance.

FireCrystals(R) fireplace glass is a more healthful, environmentally friendly alternative to wood for fireplaces and fire pits, according to a recent rating by Degree Of Green(TM), a program that helps consumers determine the green and healthy aspects of home and building products.

Paper House Made from Newspaper!

Now, we  have seen newspaper chairs and newspaper benches but a house made out of newspapers?

The Paper House was constructed mostly from newspapers including 1-inch thick glue-and-varnish covered

newspaper walls.

The framework to the house is wood-just like any other house-it has a regular wood-en floor and wooden roof. The wall material, which was supposed to be insulation really, is pressed paper about an inch thick. It’s just layers and layers of newspaper, glue, and varnish on the outside that keeps it pretty water-proof actually. This was done in 1924 and he lived here in the summertime up until 1930.

Recycling plastic storage crates

No matter what part of the world that you live in, you will always find these crates. In some cases they are found discarded at the side of a road, or occasionally they can be found floating in the local river.

3

3

Which probably why some people have some really great ideas, like these they have all been produced by using the plastic grates and because they are both light and strong, they can be reused for furniture and even a chandelier, matching colours are optional and in some cases preferable.

Ceiling Fans Can Cut Down Energy Consumption

Ceiling Fans

There are two things that people want to resolve today: get proper ventilation against crazy climate changes and reduce energy consumption. Air conditioning is at its peak during hot days and apparently thanks to climate change, we no longer know when that is. In fact, if before you knew which months that your air conditioner would be less utilized, now you have to consider using it extensively.

So how do people address this? Well there is the usual ceiling fans which may solve this problem. Known to be lesser in energy consumption, they have their ways of providing the proper room temperature in your home. Some homes have them while others are contemplating on it. After reading this, do not be surprised if you find yourself rushing to the nearest store to get one and install it immediately.

Ceiling fans reduce energy consumption by decreasing the use of air conditioning. In summer, they create a downdraft which increases the rate of evaporation of moisture on the skin. In the winter, they de-stratify the air, displacing the heated layer that rises to the ceiling with cooler air from the lower levels of the room.

Fans are operated with a clockwise rotation in the winter to create an updraft and counter clockwise direction in the summer to create downdraft. This direction is determined as you look up at the fan.

The amount of air movement is a function of the size of the blades and their pitch, which varies from about

12 to 20 degrees, says Goemans. Other factors include the distance from the ceiling and between the blades, as well as the length of the blades to the size of the room.

Eco-friendly Cleaners for the Green Home

Green Housecleaning

A healthy home needs the use of healthy cleaning aids. Traditionally, chemically induced cleaners are known to get the job done, but the harmful fumes they emit inside homes are disconcerting.

Eco-friendly house cleaners are making their way to the forefront of cleaning supplies. With such a great alternative option, it doesn’t hurt to check them out. Labeled as non-toxic cleaners, these products ensure a more healthy, eco-friendly lifestyle for the modern home. If you feel like channeling your inner alchemist, check out the following recipes for easy, homemade eco-friendly alternatives!

Indoor Window Cleaner
Fill a spray bottle with water, 2 tbsp (25 mL) of lemon juice and a 1/2 cup (125 mL) of white vinegar. Spray and wipe off with a rag or newspaper (your grandma was right, it works!). Shake well before each use.

Super Simple Tub and Sink Scrub

Make a paste with baking soda and water. Scrub and rinse for further sanitizing. For further sanitizing, use an all-purpose or vinegar and water spray.

Drain De-clogger
Pour baking soda down drain. Add white vinegar and cover drain if possible. Let sit for five minutes, then pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain. (The vinegar and baking soda break down fatty acids, allowing the clog to wash down the drain.) This method can be used weekly to help prevent drain clogs. Do not use this method if you have used a commercial drain opener and it may still be present in the drain.

Asian Parchment-premium Lanterns from Precious Pieces

Precious Pieces

As their namesake implies, eco-friendly furniture can really be Precious Pieces. This company uses the ancient technique of making washi papers. This technique utilizes sustainable and biodegradable ingredients to create one-of-a-kind parchment, which Precious Pieces then forms into unique, aesthetically pleasing lighting. The best part is that a majority of the concepts and design is based on innovative ideas negating the use of expensive raw materials.

Precious Pieces

Check out these awesome lanterns! Just by using seemingly plain materials such as washi or parchment paper, you will be amazed at what creative, fun, and beautiful furniture pieces and accessories you can create!

Precious Pieces Washi Lamp

The centuries old process of creating handmade washi papers is a testament to the fact that sustainable and biodegradable materials are often rooted in honored traditions and indigenous practices. We loved the voluminous, geometric lanterns that Precious Papers had on display, and we were even more intrigued by the possibilities for using their eco-parchment in both architectural and interior design projects.
