Car sharing is bringing about significant green benefits, including:

• Less Cars on The Road - as many car sharers end up ditching their cars
• An Increase in Alternate Modes of Transportation – car sharers tend to bike, walk, and use public transit more
• Transportation Savings – some car sharers are reporting annual auto savings of up to $5,000

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The process involves registering for a driving plan (monthly commitment or pay-as-you-go), chossing a car, and paying the car sharing fee. A variety of different car models are available, including Hybrids.

FEES & FINE PRINT 

The fees vary from the hourly of $9, or daily rates from $66. For the pay-as-you-go plan, there is an application fee of $25, and an annual fee of $50. Gas, parking, and insurance are all included in the rates. You must be atleast 21, and have been licensed for atleast 1 year, with no major moving violations within the past 3 years. (and a few other requirements) Right now Zipcar is available in 13 cities, including Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle.

KEETSA VERDICT 

Zipcar is aimed at urban dwellers who want to explore alternative means of getting around, but car sharing is a viable option for anyone who wants to drive less and wants to do so in an eco friendly manner.

This biodiesel will be a blend of soybean oil and animal fat mixed with traditional petroleum diesel.

With the growing biodiesel industry the demand for soybean crops is skyrocketed, which is creating a boon for local Mississippi farmers, who will see an increase in the price paid to them for soybeans.

Why biodiesel?

Biodiesel is cleaner fuel and made from renewable resources, not to mention a local domestic product, which means less reliance on foreign oil.

The new biodiesel will be available to both commercial and public users, here is a list of the diesel service stations from Scott Petroleum.

The priest Don Anthony Sutch, is a Benedictine monk, who was the head teacher of the local school, Downside, until he resigned to take up his position of parish priest, will be at the Waveney Greenpeace festival, which takes place over this weekend.

The priest will set up an eco confessions box, where all of those eco sinners can confess their eco sins, no matter how small.

This goes on all over the world. No one is spared from following this kind of practice and sad to say, the victims in the end are the natural resources and the creatures, including man. The problem here is that everyone wants to be a step ahead and while the new development of companies and businesses are a given, they are unknowingly stepping on natural resources which are dying due to man’s continued ignorance.

Hopefully though, some environmentalists and groups can help avoid these kinds of circumstances. It is really something that needs proper attention.

Judy Wick of BALLE, is a member of SVN the Social Living Network, and she is one of the pioneers featured in 20 Ideas that Changed The World.

It all started with her bakery, The White Dog Cafe, where food is purchased from local farms, long-distance purchasing is limited, and operations are wind-powered. She wanted to build a business that coincided with her social values and she explains her philosophy on local living economies by stating, “the solution is clear — we must decentralize business ownership, food production, and energy production into self-reliant local economies.”

Wicks felt that the local economy as a whole is what will prevail against the Walmarts of this world. “Taking what she learned to a higher level, Wicks started the White Dog Foundation, which uses 20% of the Café’s profits to build a local living economy, including connecting local farmers with other restaurants”.

She aims for the concept of self-sustaining economies to go mainstream and that more cities and towns adapt this environmentally-friendly life model.

Agricultural researchers state that “eating local capitalizes on our concern about the climate, the energy we use, and a disconnect that more and more people feel from the environment and where their food comes from.” and that “eating local usually means that your food comes from within 100 miles from where you live, but some define “local” as encompassing your region’s watershed, no matter the mileage”.

The other benefits listed for eating local are:

• taste- produce on average that has traveled less, is fresher
• healthier crops, due to less handling from travel and also more nutritious as some foods lose their nutrient value over time
• eating and buying local food keeps the money in your community, as much as 90 to 100%
• social, many folks want to reclaim a connection with rural life
• safety, as foreign or far way produce is more susceptible to accidental or intentional contamination and widespread outbreaks
• lower cost, many folks have compared prices from markets vs. the local big box and found surprising results, local on many items is cheaper
• earth-friendly, less transport equals less energy and oil use

Depending on where you live, it may not be feasible to eat local all year-round, as some produce is season dependent. But even if you go local 6 months out of the year, you will benefit from all of the above.
